    My first rifle. My father bought it for me when I was 7. Learned to shoot on it. I'm sure many of us have.

    I learned to shoot on the Remington 514. My Grandfather bought me a used one (well cared for; date code indicates April 1949 manufacture) as my first rifle at the age of 8 (31 years ago now). My Grandfather, a combat wounded, amputee WW2 Veteran from the European theater, was a professional and later hobbyist word worker and refinished the stock - it is one thing I have left from him and will never attempt to change. Now, my boys will learn the fundamentals on this rifle as did I. This rifle will never leave my family under any circumstance. And I mean any circumstance.

    My Dad got me one of these for my 6th birthday in 1958. I still have it. My Dad was in the Marine Corps and was an expert rifleman. He taught us to shoot and "zeroed" in this rifle to where if you missed what you were shooting at, it was your fault, not the rifle. It's a great rifle and very accurate. This video brought back a lot of memories.

    Ha! I just stumbled upon this video, and loved it!!! This was my first rifle. Bestowed on me by my brother, ten years my senior, when I was 9 yrs old. I am now 69 yrs on this old earth. Those were the day's when you could go to the local gas station, and buy ammo, and at our's, the owner would let you buy, by the "each". Wasn't much money available to a poor little W. Ky. farm boy. but we were expected to work. All my earning's went towards .22 shorts. There wasn't a bullfrog, squirrel, rabbit or tin can safe in the county.😀 I've owned, traded, and sold a small arsenal since then, but none have held to my memory like that little gun. My 11 year old grandson has it now, and, to his dad's credit, is being taught very well in safely handling and shooting with that little .22. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Be safe. Roger

      Great it is being kept in the family. This one was picked up at a gun show awhile back by my dad as a project rifle for the grand kids. My oldest son now has it. I do have a JC Higgins that my Grandfather purchased new back around 1955. 4 generations of family have used it and It will be passed down to one of my sons one day. Thanks for watching. If you want to see the JC Higgins here is the video. th-cam.com/video/M_PTvL3SXaM/w-d-xo.html

    We have one in our family. My 84 YO Father bought it in the 50's. My Brother and I shot the heck outta it during the late 70's early 80's. It still shoots lights out. We shot crows off the corn at 60-80 yds. We still shoot it pretty regularly. My son prefers this over the 10-22

    Love the old 514. I have one that I restored as well. After disassembly, I removed what was left of the finish (it was really beat up and rusty) by soaking all the metal parts in Evaporust. The barreled action was sanded out to about 1k grit, and cleaned thoroughly with acetone. I then rust blued everything (time consuming but not as hard or expensive to setup as you may think). The bolt I also rust blued as the original was in the white but coated with some sort of plastic/varnish I did not want to go back with. I scraped the finish off the stock and went back with boiled linseed oil. Last item was new new re-pop butt plate (original was broken). Fun project and turned out pretty nice.

    I bought one of these great little rifles for my 16th birthday with TOP VALUE stamps. Back in the day you could buy a rifle at 16 years old with stamps saved in "books" from redemption centers across the USA. I got mine for 25 books straight off the shelf without a background check or a 4473 form..LOL!

    Grandfather loaded me and my three brothers in his car one day in the late 60s and drove us just outside of town to do some shooting.....first time for all of us and it was this model of rifle....I somehow ended up being the next caretaker of it and it's still a great plinker to this day!!

    I'm 67 and I have two of them now. One was made in 1949 and one in 1959. I started shooting a model 514 when I was around 10 years old that belonged to my brother and finally purchased one for myself when I was about 40 years old for 50 bucks at a gun show that had a home made stock literally cobbled from a 2x4. It worked but was really ugly. I later found a stock on ebay for 30 dollars and fixed it up again., It shoots really nice now. I found one at another gun show for 75 bucks years later that had all the original parts but someone painted all the metal parts with black enamel paint. Surprisingly the paint doesn't look that bad so I shoot it as is. Both of them have really nice bores and shoot nice.

      You are correct for this model. I did not qualify my statement very well, I was talking overall within the category, Millions of bolt action 22 were made back in the day by several different manufactures. Thanks for watching.

    I'm 75 years old and my father gave me that exact rifle back in the 50s and I still have it. It's only been shot a few times from when it was new and then sat in a nice dry closest for the next 65 years. So it's in pristine condition. However, I didn't see a production date on the barrel as you said it was?

    • @45AlfaCharliePapa
      @45AlfaCharliePapa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Remington used a coded system, You should check out some of the forums to decipher the code. Thanks for watching. Get out and shoot it. They are great little shooters.

    Thanks for making this. I have one and have been fixing it up. Reshaping the horrible stock design and still trying to get creep out of the trigger. How accurate do you think it could be at 50yds with a scope? 1/2” groups? I ask because I just might get mine drilled and tapped for a scope.
