I'd imagine the extra stand-off between the muzzle and the end of the shroud also helps eliminate spattering caused by the muzzle gases. I think Ian did a video on a Greener humane dispatch gun that filled a similar role but was much more compact and disassembled into a handy kit of parts for a veterinarian to carry.
You are 100% correct. Same with the ports in the shroud. Less gases being blown into the wound means less mess.
