  • A week ago I posted a video that featured a vintage Remington 581. In this video I show you the completed project after cleaning it up and refinishing the stock. I hope you enjoy this presentation. Here is the link to the video I mentioned regarding the refinishing of a Remington 700 walnut stock.

You sure are lucky to have come across not one, but six of these 581’s. I’ve only run up on one and it was in dismal shape with water damage to the stock & some rust at a ridiculous price of 350.00 in its condition. Went to a gun show in Louisville yesterday and only saw one, a Winchester 69-A but the guy that had it was a prick so I left it. Had it been anyone else, I’d have bought it. I just can’t find a 581 at all! Depressed up in KY. Thanks for your content!

Well... I actually own 5 of these. If you have not found one by now all I can say is keep looking. Just this past fall I ran across a seller that had one in A-1 shape for $300. Don't get discouraged, patience will pay off for you, I guarantee it! Take Care, and Happy Hunting.

In case you are interested, I found one at Gunbroker with a very low starting price. It looks like it could use a little TLC, but it seems to be fairly solid.

Beautiful job on that 581. I believe you could shave using that stock as a mirror. A friend gave me an old Marlin 80 over 30 years ago. It looked like it had been dragged behind a pickup truck and the metal was awful. I painstakingly refinished that stock, every little imperfection was taken out of that stock and I finished it with linseed oil and Tru Oil, 12 hand rubbed coats. I reblued the barreled action. It turned out looking like a piece of glass and shot one hole groups. After using this gun for 30+ years, I gave it back to the original owner for his son. While my 581’s and my 582 look pretty good, I may have to refinish them when time permits, especially after seeing your results.

Looks like a Weatherby. Got a 67 Marlin 39 a golden mountie that I am thinking about refinishing. Did not know the Casey product did that kind of job.

A shame Remington didn't continue that quality. That is what did them in. I have a 1993 premier model 11-87. Beautiful gun. Cycles the lightest target loads flawlessly ,Bought a 2019 model 552- there is no comparison. Besides , it hates the golden bullets. When will these companies learn that quality matters ? Tru oil makes great products.

I have one of these beautiful rifles with a walnut stock as well. Keep up the great work! Do you happen to know if the magazine release and guide from a Remington 541 will also work with the 581?

Sorry for the late reply, but since the magazines are the same, I have no doubt it will work.

    Sir,
I need to ask your opinion. I have an opportunity to purchase a 1968 model 581, in pretty rough shape. The shop wants 350. Is that too steep to pay for this rifle as I will have substantial work to do on it. By the time I’d be through with it, I’d spend as much on a CZ 457, and does the trigger from a REM. 788 fit this rifle? Thanks!!!!

If it's in rough shape I would most likely pass on it, and look for another one. Really nice ones can be had for around $450, maybe even less. Last fall I attended a gun show and there was a guy walking around with one that was like new. He was asking $300 for it, and I almost bought it, but since I already own 5 of them I didn't need another. If it had been a 582 (tubular magazine) I would have jumped on it since I don't yet own that model. I once pitted a CZ 452 against my original 581, and it shot ok, but was not nearly as consistent as my old Remington. If it had been even close, I would now be the owner of that CZ. Perhaps that particular rifle had a flaw in the barrel, because CZ's are usually quite accurate. Maybe I need to try out a 457...........

I very much appreciate your response and I place high value your opinion. I thoroughly enjoy your videos on the rifles you have accumulated. You do an excellent job refinishing these vintage guns.
      Thanks again for your input!

I know you have six 581’s. I am going to a gun show in Louisville on the 24th & am going to look for one. If I can’t find one, woukd you consider selling one of yours? Please let me know and thanks for all your great videos!
