    Rimfire of my childhood #2
This is a quick look at one of my five rimfires of my child hood the ITHACA M49 single shot .22 Production was from 1960-1978 with an estimated 500,00 made. The gun sold for $ 20.00 or less it was a cheaply made gun that was almost considered a throw away gun as most of them did not last very long. This belonged to my dad and it is priceless to me.

I am 72 years old and I bought one of these when I was 14 years old with my father's approval. I gave $14.95 for it and I still have it. It has always been accurate I carried it for years during hide season hunting with hounds. Enjoyed your video brought back good memoties. Good shooting!!!!

Got one as a gift in 1978 when I was 4 yrs old, learned to shoot with it when I got a smidge older. Still have it, still shoot it. I love this little rifle. Taught my sister to shoot with it. Then my sons and my niece. Cheap to shoot, accurate and just a nice piece of my history. Thanks for sharing.

There is one hanging on the wall in my house. It is my wife's. We found it 4 years ago in a closet after her mother passed. It was her dad's, who passed in 1995. My wife didn't even know it existed until we found it.

I was raised on a ranch in southern Oregon .my brother and I got these for Christmas in the mid 70s (successive serial numbers) we butchered our own beef. I know from personal experience that a 22lr head shot to a full sized steer at 50 feet from this rifle will instantly drop that animal where it stands, never underestimate that little rifle.

My dad bought me an Ithaca M49 when I was 6 years old in 1960. I saved up $10 and had a local gunsmith put a scope on it. I remember going to the hardware store as a kid and buying a 50 round box of ..22s for a quarter. I have loaned it to several coworkers to teach their kids to shoot. It now resides in my gun safe 61 years after dear old dad gifted it to me.

Thanks for the informational video. Started with .22 pistol and worked my way up to 45, now working my way back down the caliber chart and it comes down to Ruger 10/22 or lever action (Henry, Winchester, Savage). Great inexpensive (gun and ammo) plinking gun. Noticed cross branding with IV8888 tee = cool.

Interesting video. I bought my Ithaca M49 in 1981 for $52. I just fell in love with that Martini/Peabody action. Yeah, it's SLOW to shoot but you can get quite fast at reloading if you keep a few rounds between your fingers. No kidding, the gun is accurate and not having a true "safety" it does have a rebounding firing pin. Working the lever, the empty cases get thrown real far (sweet). You do have to thumb cock the hammer but it makes for a nostalgic shooting experience. I think Stevens had a model 89 which looked exactly like this Ithaca. Wasn't there a model 72 in WMR and also a 49R (repeater)??????? I'll never sell or trade my M49. It's one of my favorite .22's and I have nine .22 rifles and a KNR-5. As my dad would say... you can't beat it with a stick!

  • @davej3487

With the M-49, if you missed the shot don't blame the gun, it was all on YOU. ;) While not real good for more that 50 yards with the open sights I have hit many 'Steels' at 100 yards for that nice "Clang" sound. I'd bet if I could mount a scope on mine it would be very good at 100 to 150 yards. Too short of a barrel for 200 yards but you'd hit something good and hard.

I bought one off of Gunbroker about 8 years ago and it is one of my favorite .22's. I can't speak for every M-49, but my M-49 is a laser! I'm a so-so shot, but any can or bottle within 50 yards is in trouble, and we knock out clays at 100 (just a bit of a lob) more times than knot. Nice video, and great gun!

I bought an M49 for $15 about 60 years ago, shot many rabbits and squirrels with it and even a few raccoons. When I moved to Montana in 1990 I took it with me and at my cabin shot more than 200 ground squirrels with it. I also shot 100s of rounds for fun. I still have it. It’s still accurate and fun to shoot. Great little carbine.

To a 10 year old that was one step down from Steve McQueen. Is a groove in top of breach lever has a detent in action . Open all way to eject, move lever to detent, drop round pointy end facing bad guy into groove in breach , let it nose in,open lever full with barrel pointing towards ground maybe thumb assist, close lever, cock hammer , and aim&shoot. It's faster& easier than it sounds. Also note no safety or half cock.
