Dim Sum means touch of heart in translation. Basically it means you eat a variety of little or very small portion of delicious set of dishes instead of a course of meal as you would in normal restaurants. That's also what the emperor eats during Qing dynasty and you would find some of those history in Beijing. @15:40 She was wrong about such term being "popularized by Chinatowns in the West" (unless she considers Hong Kong as part of the West which it isn't/wasn't lol...) as it is just the way it was meant that got twisted/misunderstood overseas. So in Cantonese, they will say going to "Yum Cha" (which means to drink hot tea) instead of going to "Dim Sum." But those small dishes you order are all Dim Sum dishes that most people going to "Yum Cha" would do/eat/order. And the reason you "Yum Cha" is actually for health benefit that is to get rid of the oily elements from the Dim Sum dishes apart from the tea drinking cultural aspects. I hope that make sense to you guys.
Yes, there are several interpretations or understandings as to the origin of tea drinking,, snacks and foods. And the combination of these. However, I preferred to see that tea drinking is a thing in many parts of China. For travelers, road side tea stalks or tea house served many necessary functions, like resting, rehydrates, looking for directions, local informations and community interactions. Tea stalks, or tea house, would of course develop and expand their product line to foods. And depends on the location and the vision of the owner, determines what kind and how broad the food variety will be. From breads, noodles, snacks to eventually a full meal. Cantonese use dim sum as an umbrella name for foods served in a tea house. Make sense. So, basically, drinking tea and eating dim sum generally goes together and could be enjoyed around the clock, anytime you deem favourable. Sidenote drinking strong tea is deemed not favourable at certain times (not before going to bed) as well as some people (weak digestion or sick). One can always drink warm water, and referred to your Chinese family doctor or elders for directions.

So glad the two of you found a local guide to take you to try dim sum, which means 'touch the heart' in Chinese. Dim Sum refers is a much older term for small snacks ord dish that accompany drinking tea back in the old tea house. It goes back centuries probably back to Tang or Song. As time goes buy especially in the Guangzhou region, the tea house evolve into "Cha Lau" which is more like a restaurants. I am pretty sure its origin is not from Chinatown since we use the term in Hong Kong.
"Dim Sum" is like a category, just like how we categorize cakes, chocolates, ice cream etc. as desserts. "Yum Cha" is just a word for the activity of eating dim sum and drinking tea at a Cha Lau (the dim sum restaurant), "we'll go Yum Cha" is just like a phase for "let's have brunch".

You guys make me feel hungry.............shrimp dumpling is my favor-est dim-sum item. It's very clever to have a local friend to be a guide, they know the features of a city.
❤️
I am so hungry by looking at it. Love it
Cantonese cuisine is famous for its fresh ingredients and light taste.Every place in China has its own unique delicacy culture.Have fun.Love from Wuhan,China❤
This is exactly what I mentioned in the video of you guys eating hotpot. If you have a local friend to take you to taste delicious food, you will have a better experience. Congratulations to Luke and Naomi, and I wish you both all the best in China!
I'm glad that there are finally enthusiastic people who have helped you find the good food in Guangzhou, in fact, there are many more delicious foods waiting for you to discover, such as Shunde, Foshan
That Chinese girl speaks perfect English. She is multilingual. We know she speaks Mandarin Cantonese English.
But talking a bit too much...all the dim sum are getting cold...😂😂😂

the local guide nailed it! this dim sum restaurant is the most special one! it's a historical one with amateur Cantonese opera performance.
Thank you for introducing Vivian. I am a Chinese born in Malaysia and couldn't read chinese or speak Cantonese or fluent in Mandarin. It is helpful to get a local guide. Hope you enjoyed all the delicious food. Australian Chinese calls it Yum cha as well
Amazing to have a local friend showing around.
I came across a re-post of your video on Bilibili, and it was very refreshing to see China through the eyes of a foreign friend, without any distortion of the facts. Especially when you were eating Chinese food, I felt quite anxious for you... I really wanted to teach you how to eat it properly, haha.
Foreign tourists should post notice to invite a local to bring round for Chinese food. This will definitely enrich your dining experience.
You pronounced 烧卖 perfectly 😂❤
😂❤️❤️❤️❤️
In Cantonese!😊
In most places in China, dim sum is made of rice noodles, etc. This girl tells it very well and clearly😊
Southern China has rice, moving north other cereals prevail. And thus, foods and dishes vary without saying.
the English word "dim sum" is a homophonetic of the Cantonese word (点心). If the same word is spoken in the Mandarin, i would take it as pastry esp. sweet shortening delicacies.
It's smart to have a guide who knows the local area😊
I just love this couple, so lovely and humble and easy to get along with the locals ❤
Find watching your videos very relaxing and like im there with you on your days journey. The filming and descriptions are excellent and you're both so natural and open to new experiences ❤️ loved this video, so interesting. Well done😢
love you guys, and enjoy your trip in China❤

Dim Sum refers is a much older term for small snacks ord dish that accompany drinking tea back in the old tea house. It goes back centuries probably back to Tang or Song. As time goes buy especially in the Guangzhou region, the tea house evolve into "Cha Lau" which is more like a restaurants. I am pretty sure its origin is not from Chinatown since we use the term in Hong Kong.
Enjoy❤❤❤😊
You brought beautiful energies to China, and the Chinese responded with positive energies! :)😄
wow Luke has a lot of potential speaking Cantonese, very precise pronunciation! 👍👍
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The couple is so cute
There's one such old-fashioned tea house mentioned at 26:54 in Hong Kong called 蓮香樓 (Lin Heung) with dim sums on trolleys.
this girl guide is so good, even I as Chinese can learn a lot from her explanations for the YumCha ritual
LUCK is truly a gentleman, who follows the host's instructions and speaks appropriately. It's interesting that I noticed that LUCK often involuntarily places his chopsticks on top of the shrimp dumplings after eating one. When he realizes there are only two left, he always moves his chopsticks away.
thank you so much!!!
FINALLY, this is the first time you have a real Chinese food. The called street food do not represent any Chinese food culture at all and actually most Chinese do not eat street food. Many traditional Chinese restaurants are located in the big malls, you can always find restaurants at the top floors and the B1 underground floor in a mall.
street food CAN represent Chinese culture, we have so many and diversity of street food, South Korean steal one or two things like Tanghulu it soon become popular
TangHulu is a manchurian snack so I can understand why it is familiar for Koreans.
Its so nice to have a local friend when you come to a new place. I remembered the days in Roma and my friend there brought me to a local restaurant for typical Roma food, but not pizza
