you interpreted "Public area" rather loosely. the airlines rented that space to conduct their business and it's within their right not allow people to record anything.
Hi Karolina and Jay, your shocks have just started. I'm not from China but have traveled to China 5 times (will be sixth in Oct 2024) and everything you guys heard or read from mainstream media back home can be thrown out of windows, whatever they said, just turn them 180 degrees and you'll get the info right. I would rank China the safest country for travelling the last 10 years (at least). When you guys are done with China's cities, go visit the tourist attractions on mountainous landscapes like Zhangjiajie, Jiuzhaigou, Guilin, Yunnan, Dali, Lijiang and so on. You are about to get (Positive) Shocks upon shocks in China and when you say the truth about what you experience in China, be prepared to be accused that you guys are paid by China's government like all the other youtubers have. Just enjoy !!
Thank you so much Stuart for opening up and sharing your experiences! We're looking forward to seeing all sides of China - but so far all the people we came across were super nice, the level of security is completely controlled by the various services and several times a day we see a road cleaning truck pass by and litter is collected 🙌 And what amazes us most is probably how efficient the transport is! It's really amazing how perfectly everything works.
Why not go to Northeast China? The people there are so warm and welcoming. If you live there for a year, you can truly experience the changes of nature throughout the four seasons.
I read that in China tipping can be offensive so we were worried about that but I think the restaurant had a bit of a service charge on the payment which was completely fine because they were all really helpful and friendly! Thank you :)
@@JayandKarolina You are right and I am not judging. I am aware that tipping is really not a thing in China. Glad that you enjoyed the meal and the service. FYI, you can split the payment if the amount is over 200 RMB as when a single transaction amount is greater than 200 yuan, a handling fee of 3% will be charged by Alipay or Wechat pay.
@@JayandKarolina For international card transactions with a single transaction amount of 200 yuan or less, the handling fee will be borne by Alipay; For international card transactions of more than 200 yuan, Alipay will charge a certain commission, the proportion depends on the specific international card organization regulations, and the payment page will show the details.
Welcome to my hometown, Beijing. Don't be surprised, because hospitality is what our ancient Chinese sages have been teaching us for thousands of years, and it has become our daily habit.
@@AB_123_AB I'm sorry to make you feel this way, but you need to reflect on why Beijing people only serve you badly. Or why don't you come to Beijing? Is it because you have no money? Why don't you work hard on weekdays?

But if you travel to China, you'll be surprised by how wonderful, beautiful, safe, clean the place is. The hotel is relatively old, but the location is very good. I have been to Beijing many times, and the hotels near Tiananmen Square are very expensive and old. Beijing transportation is very convenient, and you can live a little further away from the city center, which will be much more comfortable.
Especially right! As a person who has lived in Beijing for a long time, it is recommended to choose a hotel with a late opening time when booking a hotel Don't worry about being far from the main attractions, because the transportation is particularly convenient

BBC & CNN urge not to travel to China. China is poor, Like to eat cat meat, dog meat and bat meat ,has many homeless people, and is covered with CCTV to monitor tourists and look for opportunities to prosecute tourists.
Thanks for sharing such an excellent vlog. Chinese people are incredibly friendly and humble towards visitors, always eager to lend a hand. Unlike the "welcome to come and shop but don't stay" attitude often found in some Western countries, the hospitality in China is genuinely heartfelt. Whether rich or poor, young or elderly, Chinese people truly want you to feel at home. This stems from a deep-rooted cultural value that dates back over 2,000 years: "宾至如归," --meaning "guests should feel at home." Their warmth and openness create a unique experience you won’t find anywhere else.
That’s why even the US government officials are now openly admitting they are trying to keep China down to restrict China’s growth in order to keep China from surpassing the US and leaving the US in the dust! As if it isn’t obvious for everybody to see already!

That's so true! We haven't noticed the different colouring at first but now thinking about it we've seen so many electric (VERY NICE) cars!!! Especially around Shanghai 😜
Yes we do! And we’re actually so excited because we’ll be visiting different parts of China! Glad you liked the video as there’s plenty of vlogs coming your way 🥳
I saw your video on Bilibili, thank you for your positive promotion of China! In fact, China is a very happy country. People are very friendly and warm. There are many delicious food. I hope you can visit Hunan when you are free. The fried vegetables and Rice noodles here are very delicious
1. Quietness inside the metro is a courtesy, and kinda socially expected; food or open lid drinks are usually not allowed in most Chinese cites’ metro, just FYI. 2. Few years back the gov did a huge push on EVs, and it has been pretty successful. EVs carry green plates, can be very easily identified. All the scooters have been electrics for a long time. That’s why it’s quiet on the streets. I had also noticed this after returning back to China. 3. Spitting is a bad hobbit and we also hate people doing it, but have to deal with that. With better educations, younger people do that much less. Anyways, hope you guys enjoy China! 🎉
the hotel looks quite budget. i used to stay at a similar one where they converted the basement into a youth hostel. fun times. Peking duck is a must in Beijing.
@@JayandKarolina haha, your price not expensieve especially it's center of Beijing. if you staying long time in Beijing/Shanghai. you will know these city able how expensive.
In fact, whenever someone comes up and says we can't film something, there's no clear justification for it because there will always be people who will take videos on their phone and lots of other pictures and no one will ever approach them saying they shouldn't do it - so we have mixed feelings about what we ‘should’ do then, because in theory no one should really stop us filming 😜

China is so far ahead these people have no idea !
Great video, you guys will have an awesome time in China just keep an open mind! Make sure you try real Peking duck before leaving Beijing. Regarding your comments at the end of the video, I mean... the U.S just recently approved another $1.6 billion in funding specifically for anti-China propaganda so it's not surprising people have developed subconscious biases. It's particularly disappointing when people think about Chinese people as some monolith rather than individuals, it's honestly very dehumanizing and disrespectful to a country with such an incredible and long history. As an Aussie that's travelled across China I can honestly say I met some of the most amazing human beings there. P.S your waiter was awesome. Normally you cook hotpot yourself but he did everything for you haha what a legend.
Thank you so much for your kind words, really appreciate it 🙏🏼 We don't want to get too involved in political topics, but you're right - generally speaking, propaganda makes no sense to us because it is often untrue... And we were very (positively) surprised by China!
Jay you must land in Hongkong first next time and then to these following cities next time: Hongkong, Macao, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhongshan in the Greater Bay Area and then your next trip can include Chengdu, Chongqing, Guizhou Province, Yun'nan Province, Tibet etc. and your further trip would be the fantastic areas including Shanghai, Suzhou, Nanjing, Hangzhou, typical city cluster of Yangtze River delta, and then you will have a perfect understanding of China at this point. Good luck!!!

Also the reason it's quiet on the subway and streets is because its considered rude to talk to strangers or talk loudly in public Japan is the same when it comes to transport your not supposed to talk on the trains. Wish England was the same with being quiet in public and not shouting although London underground trains people are quiet most the time sitting on trains

If you want to experience more deeply you can even get a better hotel at the same price just a little bit far from the center of the city. And as long as there is a subway nearby, transportation won't be a problem. You can also use DIDI to get a taxi which is also very convenient and inexpensive.
@@CarlBencurtis There are too many hotels. It is recommended to use Chinese apps, Alipay or WeChat. These two apps can not only be used for payment, but also for taking taxis and booking hotels. Of course there are many other features.
Usually Chineses wont eat hotpot at morning,so the restaurant looks quite empty, lol. The hotel in China normally will more expensive in downtown, so if its located in downtown but cheap, its a high probability the hotel not so well
As a Chinese whenever I saw the policeman on the street, I'll feel safe. the policeman in China is quite different with the west country, if you have any question/help, you can always ask them. sometimes when you loose your way, they will send you to the destination by their car.

Well done guys, you're surely right ! You remind me a journalist from the EU ARTE TV channel. She spent six months in North Korea. I travel to China for work often and have been doing so for a number of years. I don't know why westerns (American here) have a weird thing about China. I live in the SF Bay Area in the US and when I return from a trip to China, I get depressed on how antiquated America is. China is high-tech and also very safe. In the 2+ years that I paused my travel due to the pandemic, China managed to build a new mega airport in Beijing and build an entire subway line to the new airport and a new station that connects the 2 lines to the 2 airports and city center. In my area, BART has been talking about extending a segment of 10 miles and it will probably take 10-15 years before we see completion... In China, people respect law enforcement and in return, police officers are professional and polite unlike those in America. Videos like this really help western get an understanding what China is really like.
Thanks a lot for your post… I am also from the Bay Area and I have been traveling to China for the past 17 years and staying usually for two months. I totally agree with all of the things you have noted about the comparison between the BART system and transportation in Shanghai. I might also add that as an older fellow I feel a lot safer walking around freely at night here than I do in my local Eastbay community.
Great video on the ground. Making plans to go there next year. 😀 Thanks for the reference. Phew, for the first 3 mins, I thought it is a repeat of the "Pianogate" incident. 😅

@@summerain6918 I'm having a hard time googling this info, is the bus free in Beijing for non-residents/foreigners over 60? Is some kind of transport card needed?
I just got back from Shanghai and Beijing. The food is really good, and the people are very friendly. There is no homeless, graffiti, or violent crime at all times of day. You can leave your bike on the street, and no one wants to steal it. Why? There are cameras everywhere. LOL. It's a very safe society, but the trade-off is that citizens are tightly watched. Security for Liberty. What do you think?
Fair comment from my expierence in China. People here are generally rude each man for himself is how society is here which stems from the chairman Mao days unfortunately FOMO is very prevelent. Whilst I'm not a fan of the CCP life here is not as bad as Western media would have you believe, no freedom of speech but freedom in other ways that we don't have in the west largely due to the lack of enforcement. Ethnic minority people are actually employed by the government to educate the han majority of Chinese about their way of life and culture, nothing like what the western media are telling us, I have seen this with my own eyes. Don't believe everything the western governments are telling you a lot of it is not true. No graffiti, public transport is clean cheap and on time, food is cheap, taxis are cheap. The lack of political correctness and woke culture here is refreshing.
Bravo, first meal after a long haul is hotpot; that is really a challenge. It seems that you enjoyed, but a bit pricey, I guess. 😅 By the way, enjoyed your video very much and thank you for sharing.
The notes show Chairman Mao - liked how you showed the trip on the airflight - you miss out a lot by not knowing the Chinese language but learning lots from your video. Many thanks,
This is the tourist version, and visiting China as a tourist is easy because you don't have to confront the messiness of everyday life and you see things but understand nothing, certainly not how the place really works. The only sense you get of what the place is really like is when you're stuck with the Chinese Intranet and can't see the news, lookup something on TH-cam or Wikipedia, or access ones email. The thing that these TH-camrs always fail to mention is that they committed a crime when they uploaded this video.
I don’t know what your daily accommodation budget is. The conditions of this 43 USD inn seem to be relatively poor. Of course, the location of this inn may be very good, hotel prices in Beijing are relatively expensive in China. I personally recommend finding one China's local hotel chain(Hanting inn, Ji Hotel) with 400RMB-500RMB (55 USD-70 USD) per night. The accommodation will be better , but the food can be a little cheaper. Enjoy your nice trip!
Exactly...i am wondering why they pick a hotel like this one in the video .. public transport is easy.. so they could consider a slightly further hotel with better quality and honesty, for a room for two with that price, could have gotten much better place
Foreigners sometimes get refused entry to Chinese hotels. It happens less in the larger cities, but the smaller the place the more likely it is to occur. The reason for this is that foreigners have to be registered wherever they go in China and many hotels couldn't be bothered learning how to do this because they get so few foreigners. One of the laws that most tourists are unaware of is that foreigners must report to the police and register with them within 48 hours of arriving in any new place they go in China. This is transparent to tourists because the hotels do it on their behalf. It is not possible to get a hotel in China unless you produce your passport. I was once left homeless because my housemate accidently locked me out of my home without my passport. I slept on the street because no hotel would give me a room, even when I told them I had other identification and could provide my passport in the morning.

beijing is a bit expensive relative to other cities with the only real exception being shanghai. for $45 a night you would get a pretty nice modern room in any other chinese city lol. that hotpot meal was pricey as well, assuming you showed everything you ordered. also fyi, chinese will layer sauces so you need to mix it. for example when they made that sesame sauce, they probably put salt, then sugar, then sesame oil, one by one at the bottom, then topped it with sesame paste. dry noodle dishes are the same as the sauce is just layered at the bottom so you really have to mix everything well.

I do not understand. What is this about "nerves' and "fears" visiting China??? You think China will "eat" you up?? UK/Westerners must NOT be so easily manipulated by their governments/politicians/media. If foreigners/tourists visit China, they are most welcomed, the locals are friendly and helpful. Always ask yourself, what is the politicians/media agenda for scare mongering??

The pricing of a hotel stay is determined by its location. You were probably staying in the city center. The best thing is that every hotel suite in China is equipped with heating. In contrast, although the standard of living in Taiwan is comparably higher, there is no heating in Taiwanese hotels during the winter. How wonderful!
I'm from Singapore. I've been to both Taiwan and many places in China . . . Unfortunately, Taiwan's standard of life is not comparable to China's. I found that Taiwan is influenced by the west about how bad China is.
@@JayandKarolina Because the Chinese government has given many preferential policies to electric vehicles. Electric vehicles do not need to pay purchase tax, which is generally 10% of the car price. At the same time, in order to facilitate everyone to distinguish electric vehicles from fuel vehicles. Many parking lots do not charge parking fees for electric vehicles, and the management system and management personnel of the parking lot are easier to distinguish. There are many preferential policies like this, so there are blue license plates and green license plates. Existence is reasonable. Don't use habitual thinking to understand the world. @@JayandKarolina EVs with green plates can be driven everyday whereas ICE vehicle with the blue plate can only be driven every other day. When it comes to filming in airports I can understand from a security perspective that they may ask you not to film, but signage and prior advisories should be given to everyone using the airport if that is in fact the position that the airport is taking. Being asked to not film and delete footage, fair enough they can ask, but they cant make you so good on you for standing your ground. You aren't trying to cause any problems for anyone, but it is literally your job. Anyone that asks not to be in the footage, you said you blur out. so fair play to you.
I agree with you 100% - couldn't have said it better myself! If we needed permission to record in public we would never be able make content or record anything. This goes for people who are just taking pictures or videos for themselves...they would need to ask permission of every person in their background lol

Thanks for sharing this video! Love it! I am in Manchester too and will visit China in January!😝
It will be so exciting for you Selena! Save travels 🥳🥳

@@JayandKarolina You will in your future videos.
Haha
I admire you for visiting China to see and experience it for yourself instead of listening to the skewed version of China on Western MSM
Thank you so much! IT'S TRULY A PLEASURE!
Correct, stay in a nicer hotel next time, there are many hotels with better conditions, services and location,.
Exactly...i am wondering why they pick a hotel like this one in the video .. public transport is easy.. so they could consider a slightly further hotel with better quality and honesty, for a room for two with that price, could have gotten much better place
Yes, Hanting and Ji hotel are much better than this one!

Hey guys have you a crazy time in China. Cheers 🎉🎉🎉
I was lucky enough to spend a few months in this amazing beautiful country. One thing I will do next time is have offline translation because of the lag with the Wi-Fi & 5g . The apple and google map doesn’t have realistic accuracy compared to the local apps I found getting a Chinese sim and phone number and running an e sim for multi Asian countries worked best you can switch back and forth. Great vid you two 👍

Very happy to see your video, we will be very friendly to foreigners, but also very safe to go out in the middle of the night do not be afraid, the hotel is a bit old, Because of the city center, this price can not be good, try to find some far away hotel convenient kind, especially modern and clean should be

在中国基本没有偷抢不用冒险,只要你是来旅游的请尽情享受,除非你是间谍😂
I do not understand. What is this about "nerves' and "fears" visiting China??? You think China will "eat" you up?? UK/Westerners must NOT be so easily manipulated by their governments/politicians/media. If foreigners/tourists visit China, they are most welcomed, the locals are friendly and helpful. China is full of culture. As guests to any country, just abide by local laws and do not act arrogant. This is normal courtesy. Always ask yourself, what is the politicians/media agenda for scare mongering??
只要你不是间谍就无需惊慌😂
it's for clicks......
Yes true, most people forget that China has different political systems, language and culture , so don’t expected everything would be like “Home”.
They’re lying to you to get on your side. Attract the tribal types. Blaming western media gets more viewers. The title just helps with subscribers. Obviously they shouldn’t be surprised by China. They have Google and Instagram, And dozens more apps.

The standard of living in Taiwan is definitely not higher.
I'm from Singapore.
I've been to both Taiwan and many places in China . . . Unfortunately, Taiwan's standard of life is not comparable to China's.
I found that Taiwan is influenced by the west about how bad China is.
Remember, Taiwan is only a part of China.
Been to both Taiwan and China many times. Definitely China especially bigger cities have higher standard compared to Taipei and Kaoshiung.
Taiwan is now like an old town compared with Chinese cities
That's a true feast.
Oh yeah! 😋 We loved all them foods!
If you look at the car plates, the green ones means the car is hybrid / electrical, the blue ones are for traditional gasoline cars
Funny enough Karolina noticed that today but we didn’t know it was for this reason! Thanks for sharing this! Why is this necessary though?
@@JayandKarolina Because the Chinese government has given many preferential policies to electric vehicles. Electric vehicles do not need to pay purchase tax, which is generally 10% of the car price. At the same time, in order to facilitate everyone to distinguish electric vehicles from fuel vehicles. Many parking lots do not charge parking fees for electric vehicles, and the management system and management personnel of the parking lot are easier to distinguish. There are many preferential policies like this, so there are blue license plates and green license plates. Existence is reasonable. Don't use habitual thinking to understand the world. I wish you a smooth trip in China!
@@JayandKarolina EVs with green plates can be driven everyday whereas ICE vehicle with the blue plate can only be driven every other day. This is a huge incentive to switch over to an EV instead of an ICE vehicle. The traffic cameras will pick up you blue plate if you not suppose to be driving that day and a ticket/fine sent automatically to your home address.
@@etow8034 单双号限行的城市不多,也不是所有时间都实行单双号,90%的城市都不限行,部分大城市限制燃油车上牌,加上新能源车免购置税才是新能源车普及的原因。
Strictly speaking, only plug-in Hybrid and battery EV have green plates, even Non plug-in (Toyota and Honda style)Hybrid get Blue plates.
Hi there, we bumped into you at the embassy in London and great to see that you made it to China. We travelled to The Yunnan province and then took local trains and flights. That was a horrid hotel by China standards I wouldn't pay more than $15-$20 dollars a night for it. You can find comparable 3-4 star hotels for under $40-$50/night in China, you would not able to get a closet in most western and European cities for under $80 !
They got ripped off at the restaurant and ripped off at the hotel. What a disgusting room for that price.

Thank you so much as always Umberto! 🥳
Chinese law has portrait rights, so if someone objects while recording, the recording needs to be stopped, but under most normal circumstances there will be no problem.
That's not in China but in UK airport haha
LoL😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😅😅😅
