uyghurs are moderate muslims. as you tasted, they have a wine culture dating back centuries. women also don't wear hijabs and are more integrated with society. compare that with neighboring afganistan. what happened over a decade ago was extremists trying to make xinjiang as islamic state similar with the taliban. not only was terrorism used on han chinese, but they also targeted moderate muslims for and even killed imans for not practicing strict islam. since extremism was often bred from poverty and discontent, the chinese solution was to build up the region and provide more services, education, and employment. there hasn't been an incident in a decade so the heavier police presents is more a legacy precaution. xinjiang was a chinese protectorate for over a thousand years. they were there mainly to protect trade routes and left governing mostly in the hands of the locals. through trade was how islam was introduced in the region and deeper throughout china.

uyghurs are moderate muslims. as you tasted, they have a wine culture dating back centuries. women also don't wear hijabs and are more integrated with society. compare that with neighboring afganistan. what happened over a decade ago was extremists trying to make xinjiang as islamic state similar with the taliban. not only was terrorism used on han chinese, but they also targeted moderate muslims for and even killed imans for not practicing strict islam. since extremism was often bred from poverty and discontent, the chinese solution was to build up the region and provide more services, education, and employment. there hasn't been an incident in a decade so the heavier police presents is more a legacy precaution. xinjiang was a chinese protectorate for over a thousand years. they were there mainly to protect trade routes and left governing mostly in the hands of the locals. through trade was how islam was introduced in the region and deeper throughout china.
