Sorry guys, I know I'm wading into a topic that can be controversial here in the dual sport community. Ride what you ride and enjoy what you use! But as for me... I'm done with 50 50 tires and I thought I'd finally share why. Hopefully this saves others the pain, money, and time I've lost with these tires which I feel are a flawed design from the getgo. Here are the tires I'm using and am happy with:

I use my DRZ 400 as daily transportation, it's truly a 50/50 on and off road bike for me. My question is, would I have issues running a heavy duty tube when I'm on the road. I heard that they can blow up from heat from extensive on road use. Don't know how true that is.

They’re a great knobby tire for the pavement, but on the dirt I ride in, I don’t have confidence with the front DSport. I kept the rear but swapped the front to a Shinko MX216 and found that to be a good combination for me. The only time a rear tire has doubled the life of a front tire, though.

Any tire you buy will involve compromise. Where do you want to compromise?

Agree! On my King of MOTOS race rental bikes, customers ask if they should have a more sand oriented hill climb tire or a rock boulder bashing tire…and I simply ask em, do you struggle more in the wide open hill climbs or the boulders piles? Get the tire that compensates the worst part of you…just like our significant partners do 😂

The best road tire pushed too hard on the road makes makes for a crash. The best enduro tire pushed too hard in the dirt makes for a fall.
Match your tires to most of your ride, and for that 10% you’re riding something else, dial it back a bit.

Had 244s on my DR650. Held up on the dirt. Hard enough for about 4k of freeway commuting. And could keep up with sport bikes in the twisties. Wwnt to a more road like tire for commuting since I didn't ride dirt as much as I thought and those were the set that caused me to wash out on pavement. Going back to 244s when this set goes.

People are very aspirational in their purchases in this realm. Like buying a diesel truck to tow a camper thrice a year, many people plan tire choices to consider extreme scenarios they may only see once or twice a year. They then sacrifice 90% of their riding for 10% scenario. What is a dual sport machine but a compromise so it doesn't surprise me that so many tire compromises dominate the discussion. Thanks for offering some light on this problem. I agree enough that a dual wheel/tire package is probably the only way for me to enjoy my machine. Even the best compromise tires get torn up after a few pavement rides making them weak at best, dangerous at worst off road. Real bummer but there is no free lunch in traction.

I think a major factor that people aren't thinking about with tires is the weight of their bike (and themselves) and the mechanical grip that gives you. Aside from tread patterns actually changing from tire size to tire size for certain brands, the same tires are going to work differently for a WR250R vs a R1200GSA.
My point here is that you likely can get away with more on a heavier bike specifically with traction (if you're doing your part), especially on the road.

  • @TwoWheeledBooBear

Big thing to keep in mind that 50 50, 70 30 etc. etc. are all just marketing terms. There's no standard to determine what a 50 50 truly is.
Dunlop calls the TrailMax Mission a 50 50. It isn't. Continental calls the TKC 80 a 40 60 and Shinko calls the 804/805 combo a 40 60. Those are both questionable (I love the 804/805)
The Dunlop D606 is one of the few tires whose marketed dirt/street use ratio is marketed somewhat accurately.
I run most of my tires on big bikes over some pretty aggressive terrain and they do well, but I'm also accustomed to it. If you're going from riding a super grippy/aggressive tire, to a less grippy, aggressive tire, your riding habits are going to be different and likely won't be conducive to maintaining good sidewall bite/grip, especially in loose stuff. On the whole I agree that a "50 50" tire is a bad idea on a proper DualSport, but then again a 606 is equally bad on a midweight ADV bike at 75-80mph for 400 miles to get to the start of an intended destination. It's all about finding what works best for you, and since your backyard is basically a desert playground, a more aggressive tire definitely makes the most sense. Rubber side down and heal fast.

Yes, I always used something close to a 50/50 on the back but a full DOT knobby on the front. I have seen a number of buddies loose the front end going around a turn on gravel roads. My other 8 accidents, where I did NOT get hurt badly were on the Africa Twin, going a bit slower, more carefully, of course, and running Dunlop Trailmax Missions (an 80/20?). Motoz Tractionator Enduro S/T (not the I/T). I’ve been using them for 5+ years. Amazing huge knobbies which are stacked in a way which makes them surprisingly smooth on road. The S/T model stands for Soft Terrain and makes the tire last much much longer than the I/T (intermediate terrain). I’ve raced these tires in NETRA enduro and turkey run events with extremely technical terrain. I would suggest everyone try them at least once because they are the best I’ve found in terms of gnarly grip with good dual sport road handling.

I've got a Shinko 244 front and a D-Sport rear right now that I'm running. The rear is about worn out at this point, but I think I'm gonna stick with an aggressive knobby on the rear and still have plenty of life on the Shinko front. I bought the Shinko when I was riding a lot more road before I bought a dedicated street bike. Now that my dual sport riding is more 50/50 on/off-road, when it does come time to replace the front, I'll go with an aggressive front again. Yeah, the tread life sucks on a knobby front, but it's nice to have the peace of mind and stability when it gets a bit tricky on the trail. Nothing worse than a front tire washing out on you and hitting the dirt hard!!! I'm sure almost all of us have been there. I will say, I am impressed with the Shinko front though and how well it does on regular gravel and dirt. Wouldn't dare take it in the mud though!

My theory is that the big block tires Tyler doesn't like are only best for big heavy bikes. They have stiffer sidewalls that need big loads to force them to conform to the riding surface. My favorite combo for DR650s was Kenda K270 rear and IRC TR8 for the front. Dunlop D606s that came on a WR250R worked well for adventuring and lasted a long time on that light (for adventuring) bike.

    • @duko4423

The IRC TR8 front is my secret weapon. That's a very good tire combo in my experience for most dual sport rides. More gnarly rides and I go with Kenda K760 front and back. They're great, but don't last long.

I have a dr650 with the adventure tires it came with. The most noticeable 'feature' is when you lean them over.
Having just ridden a bunch of mx style bikes (light off-road with me on them), when you lean them an/or intentionally slip the rear a little, you slip a little, then there is this biting edge re-engagement that claws it's way back into traction.
*The adventure tires have none of that.* If you lean them over and they start to slip, there is no edge bite traction regain. They keep slipping and it gets rapidly worse. (yes, I did experiment and push them to see how they behaved, and apparently how the dirt tastes)
My advice: whatever compromise-tire you are considering, get something that people are rating well for it's leaned-over edge traction.
For example, I'm looking at comparable tusk and Shinko tires to replace the trash tires on that DR.
*_For the models reviewed_* head to head, the tusk were half the price but 80% life, a good bargain. But the Shinko's were noted as riding better at lean, having higher traction there and more smoothly/predictably transitioning past traction and back into traction.
I consider that up-sale a worthwhile safety investment, considering my lacking rider skill. If I was broke, either of those would be a huge gain vs street side profile tires.

I am running street legal Dunlop D606 (10/90) front and rear on my DRZ400s, and they work great for me here in interior Alaska (glacial silt and rocks off road). They are not made for speed on pavement though, but the paved roads up here are crap anyway so going much over 60 on them is not recommended just because of road conditions. But for me I spend more time on dirt roads and trails than on pavement so these are my best option at present.

Man, I absolutely hated them on my Tenere 700. They were the worst, whenever they lose traction they seek from left to right. I'm running a K60 ranger on my dr650 "50/50" bike and it works much better. I feel like the big factor on the AX41 is that they have clear open no lug area across the width if that makes sense. In 4 wheelers this allows you to kick the rear out as needed, not really what we need on wet rocks while one a bike.

The big problem with the "50 50" tires is that the performance is inconsistent. Every tire of this type I've used has hooked up decently well in a straight line, but whenever I leaned the bike over to steer I felt like I was throwing some dice to see if the tire maintained traction consistently or instantly threw me to the floor.
I think this is the reason you see a lot of novice dualsporters dropping to first gear for every corner, or looking silly riding with their legs outstretched.

    • @andrewstambaugh240
      @andrewstambaugh240 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

I agree 1st-hand. If you look at the tires everride hated, they stop having knobs way far from the edges, so the edge transition is rapidly off knobs onto smooth. An MX tire has aggressive knobs sticking out and when leaned over those knobs stick out and claw traction.
There are dual purpose tires that have good edge knobs, but you have to specifically look for that.

I have always bought tires for the worst case conditions, and think of them as wear parts. I also use premium gas, top notch oil, etc. but those are more debatable. I think of it as insurance.
I would much rather get 1500 perfect miles from a 150 dollar tire than feel insecure for 3000 miles on an 80 dollar tire.
For lower speeds and almost entirely dirt, lighter bikes should also at least consider trials tires, especially if you like to lower the pressure sometimes to increase traction. The tread on them is designed to spread out like a wide strip of velcro. Wear out like bubblegum on the highway though...
    Cheers,

Oh man, shots fired against the TKC80! Those are widely regarded as a holy grail tire that work great both on and offroad at the expense of longevity. I'd agree that offroad they grip to a point, then let loose pretty spectacularly, but they're still an adventure bike tire that doesn't really make sense on a dual sport. I was thinking you were about to crap on all 50/50 tires entirely, but was relieved to see you gave props to the K270/244 tires, which I feel are "true" 50/50 tires, and I've gone through several sets in a lot of different terrain myself. Overall, I think you're right about not putting adventure bike tires on dual sports, which is what I'd consider the real problem here.

  • @flattopwill

I’d think it’s pretty obvious you shouldn’t run a 50/50 tire on a dirt bike or dual sport. I didn’t even know they made them in small bike sizes. I ran the Sedona tire after thousands of miles of BDRs on my XR650L with 50/50 IRC GP1 tires. I crashed going 30 mph because the side lugs failed on the street. My position is that you can make up for inadequacies in the tires in the dirt, but you can't make a dirt bike tire good on the street. So for a dual sport, I won't be running anything more aggressive than a D606 again.

I crossed over the center gravel hump and the front washed out right before a curve. I cracked the throttle to step the rear out but the front never grabbed before going down.
I’ve had it happen three other times, but didn’t crash. I’ve had the back step out nine times on the pavement. I wasn’t doing anything differently than I would have on MotoZ RallZ. The only thing I found the Dsport any good at is dry fire roads. The RallZ is my go to tire now.
Don’t push that Dsport too hard unless it’s dry dirt. On gravel and pavement run a slower speed than normal.

Will push a loaded DRZ through deep snow like its dry grippy dirt. Front tires suck due to the wobble effect they are known to create at 60mph.
