This being by far the best reviews of motorcycle tires available I'm wondering if a noise check should be added to the categories. In the videos Kyle always touches on this subject but I think it would be really interested to see this done with a decibel meter and then see if Kyle's feels the same when he rides. Thank you again for those great reviews.

Congratulations for what is an exceptional review. Given that tire pressure is universally recognised as having a massive impact on tire performance both off and on road. It would be interesting to take the top 3 best overall performing tires for both the 80/20 and 50/50 categories and assess the impact on performance of running them at manufacturers recommended pressures, plus at say -5% and -10%. Has the decades old best practise of airing down been impacted by the massive advances in recent years in tire technology and manufacturing process? There must be a reason that some manufactures recommend that even for off road use that the manufacturer recommend tire pressures are used.

    • @chaparralmotorsports
      @chaparralmotorsports  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, this would be an interesting test! Great suggestion! The Motoz Tractionator Adventure tire I tested near the end... in that video it was at 36/ 38 psi at the beginning of the video and WHEW was slippery when I hit the dirt. Aired down to 30 psi... MUCH better! Now Dunlop says that the Mission tire does not need to be aired down and they recommend full pressure always. BUT... I found that the Air Down REALLY helped the tire perform. Now... mileage will be compromised... and that is the reason I think they recommend full pressures. And the K60 Scout.... Full pressure is SKETCHY off road! Even 30 psi was not enough in my opinion! Thanks for watching. -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team

Thank you very much for this wonderful review. The tire I am looking for is a Great twisty road tire and a good performing off road tire, doesn't need to be aggressive but have grip in hill climb and straight off road like rocks and bolders; can handle mud too but not that great, more road oriented... Now I have the Metzler Karoo Street as always. It is great in Corners and scraping pegs in low and high speed maneuvers in my BMW R1200 GSA LC.

The TrailSmart is an "un-purchased and unasked for tire" and is really more of a 90/10 rather than an 80/20. Thanks for the first conclusion with the tests. Funny to hear that the K60 scout are expensive in US because in France, it's a very low cost model. One of the cheapest I can buy here.
They're made in Germany, but the US importer must apply a confortable margin.
On the other side, Shinko Tyres are hard to find in France.

So interesting! Prices as compared to where they are made and how they perform... Set of K60 Scout $276 and the Shinko E804/E805 are $166... but the Mitas E-10 run $352 and get like 2k miles out of a set ;) The sets of Motoz tires were above $300 too. Team, this is a fantastic explanation, and really explores the challenges of the 'perfect' tyre. I'd appreciate some discussion on mixing tyres however as they were strictly considered as pairs (with some exceptions). For example, my ADV shop recommended a combo of Tractionator ADV rear and Scorpion Rally front. The logic is that neither set is perfectly balanced for rear and front applications. The higher wear rating on the rear means more slip - not a problem for those of us who don't mind a bit of slip angle off-road. The Scorpion front however is very soft and bites well, particularly when you weight up the front on a descent. Together, this tyre combo runs out at approximately the same time - as long as you don't burn up the Scorpion on-road.
So what might improve this explanation, or simply increase its usefulness (it's already fantastic!), would be considerations for which application each tyre is more suited to for those who want to split sets.

ive just ran through my first set of K60 Scouts on my DR650 and because its only a 130 rear tire there is no center belt. that version of the scout is the best road tire ive ever ridden (even better than the pirelli diablo rosso 2 i had on my supermoto before). no matter if 20 degrees in the winter or 100 in summer, there was always superb grip and they are very transparent so you feel exactly what theyre doing. wet onroad grip was superb too. even when riding quickly in the twisties they never slid or slipped just like a real rain tire. offroad performance was relatively good as long as it was dry. in the mud they turned into racing slicks in no time.
i got around 4500 miles out of the rear (mostly on road with mixed riding) but after 50% tread wear it was just trash in the dirt like a road tire.

Watching each test back it really is crazy to see how different each of the tire did in each segment. Now... the TKC80 is still a fantastic tire, and it has it's place in the market but there are no SO MANY options that really cater to specific riding styles. Take for example that Avon TrailRider - what a NEAT tire! And the Karoo Street... I'd rock that if I were doing mostly street! Great overview!
Obviously you have only little experience with cold and wet weather in your part of the world!?
(Though I did see wet tarmac in your videos 🤔).
Just want to add 1 experience about the Heidenau‘s performance in the wet and general.
Did ride the Crosstourer for five years until last month / did trade it in for the Triumph Scrambler XE now.
On the Crosstourer (35.000 miles total) I did about 12.000 miles on the Heidenau wearing down three sets. This is lower mileage than most others do - due to heavy bike, heavy rider and aggressive on road riding (not much highway though).
Nevertheless those 100% street tires like Scorpion Trail or Road 5 did not last any longer with my type of riding - all the same at about 4.000 miles..
Rain and Heidenau: during a weekend (annual meeting of the german Crosstourer-Internet-Forum) I did about 1000miles on this tire in mostly heavy rain and below 50 Fahrenheit. That was an awful weather that June of 2016.
Riding in groups of up to ten riders in different categories regarding speed and length of the tours I chose being with the fastest doing the longest trips every day. Doing hairpins / hills... in the Eifel (area where you find the legendary Nürburgring race track).
I did learn: wow! „modern“ tires stick as well to wet tarmac as to dry. The Heidenau did perform in those wet and cold conditions - as good as any Michelin, Pirelli, Metzeler ... on the other bikes.
So to have an Idea how my riding is: need new footpegs with every two sets of tires.
The last tire I had on that bike was the Anakee Adventure and I must say that it did slip a lot lot lot more even in dry conditions than the Heidenau.
    Keep going!
    I really appreciate your work!
Propably the most comprehensive test of tires ever!
    Regards,
    Martin

One could look at our spreadsheet which has tire tread depth, tire weight, and ply make-up to see what tire would appear to have have been made with more puncture resistant materials. Good review, but I'd like it better if you reviewed/ranked the front and rear separately. To get decent mileage and still be able to ride sand I normally run a knobby front (TKC80) to avoid washing it out, but a less aggressive rear (E07+). Looking to upgrade the front to something a bit more aggressive, but rear traction hasn't been a huge issue.

Hello, these are very valid points you bring up. However, located in Southern California, consistent rain and mud is extremely difficult to come by. This was a very exhaustive test with about 25 tires that we individually tested in between keeping up with our other job responsibilities. It would have taken a lot of time and money to find a locale and the time to test all these tires adequately in all "Adventure type" conditions and terrain. We understand these tests are fully comprehensive of all the specs, info, and details of what every adventure rider wants to know, and we do apologize for that. We did the best we could with this test with the available terrain/conditions and time we had. Thanks for commenting and providing insight. Ride safe.

Oh dear, here goes another tire test that misses out on a vital part for pure adventure bikers; the tires performance under different temperatures. If any type of bike is driven all year round and in any weather it will be adventure bikes, hence a tires performance when the temperature goes below 8° Celsius is very important. You don't want to suddenly be riding around on two pieces of plastic when this happens. I am riding all year located at the 59° latitude. This means a temperature variation of -25° to +27°. Of course only the brave and fools ride below -5°, but even if skipping winter most will end up riding in temperatures between +4 to +30° if being serious about adventure riding and go places; especially if it includes altitude. Not taking this into consideration when doing these tests only gives an impression it is focused towards people who are playing around in their own backyards rather than being for global adventurers; the ones who are out there no matter what, when and wherever that might be…

Hello, thanks for taking time to watch our video and comment. You bring up a very valid point. However, in regards to our testing, logistically and financially the method and manner in which we undertook this massive test of 25 different ADV tires (the entire process took many many months), was the most practical and made the most sense for our intents and purposes. We feel there is plenty of useful information that riders can glean from these tests to help them get a better understanding as to which tire(s) might best suit their preferences/needs/ or riding style. Is this the most complete and comprehensive, end-all-be-all ADV tire test? No, and we are fine with that. But we have had more riders watch the video(s) and say they found them informative and useful than not. Thanks again for watching and commenting. Take care and ride safe.

@@chaparralmotorsports Well, maybe doing real tests is not always necessary to put forward information regarding a product and it's qualities, but you could at least take this factor in consideration when presenting tires, as well as doing the scoring. Would this be done the tires with short mileage would normally come out on top. This is your audience of course, but I am quite convinced they will very much appreciate if you, compared to the gazillion other tests out there would inform about this as well. I am not putting this forward because you made a bad test and review or anything, on the contrary it was great. I am just giving you a suggestion to make it even better and stand out from the rest. As an owner of the shinko 705's I could not disagree more with this assessment.
I just swapped my tires out for some Michelin road 6's (the shinkos are fine, just not doing any trail riding) and the performance difference on wet pavement is truly immeasurable. This review makes it sound like they are just slightly worse than proper street tires and that's absolutely not true.
I found myself sliding on my front and back tires while commuting in the rain. I decided to go to a parking lot and see how I would fare in an emergency braking situation - the verdict was not well.
I went to the place with the markings for the motorcycle permit test and on wet pavement the tires are not able to pass the permit test. This is what took my thought of "maybe I should get new tires" to an emergency "I can not ride these in the rain again until I get new tires".
I would consider their performance to be "you can manage to make it home in the rain if you're caught out in the rain. Give yourself a massive safety buffer in your speed, space, and turns and you will make it but it will not be pleasant"
Do *not* take these recommendations at face value, it may be your life that you pay. When I installed my new front tire I returned to the same spot and couldn't manage to force the front tire to lock up at all (mind you, the run up distance is very short so this is only like ~15mph). The new tires would easily and comfortably pass the permit test in the rain. When I tried going faster to find the limit I gave out before the tires did. Even in a parking lot going that fast then braking that hard if the tire grip gave out suddenly I would have a really bad day.

Current tread performance is exceeding 10k miles and may actually be on track to reach levels i've only achieved with michelin pilot road 3 and 4 of 13-14k miles per a set on a road bike.
    1. Performance on dry dirt trails - OK
    2. Performance in slippery or lose mud - Fail, you are likely to get stranded somewhere with the bike stuck.
    3. Performance on extremely wet slippery roads - barely passing in these conditions and actually quite dangerous in hydroplaning conditions with strong side winds at highway speed.
4 . Performance during the winter on mildly snowy roads - barely passing and not recommended but an experienced rider can manage it.
    5. Performance on dry roads - Pass but you will notice a reduction in grip performance after 4-5k miles.
TLDR This tire is honestly performing more like a road biased 80/20 tire than a 50/50 but the mileage is incredibly good for the money spent.

We don't get too much rain out here in southern California. This entire test took us many months to complete, so grading the tires equally/fairly in mud and rain wasn't really possible.

    *Can a KLR650 rear wheel fit a DR650??*
I suspect at *least* a bearings swap.. is it? Or there's way more?

A lot of info, but not always reflecting real life usage IMHO. Why didn't you test some wet mud performance ? The Belgian TET in the wet is a nice test bed for that because of all the clay in the soil. (for example E07 or K60 Scout(correction) is completely rubbish in those conditions because of the center line) The weather is maybe too nice where you live :).
Also, pricing is very different in other continents. I live in Belgium and order my Mitas 07+ tires from UK, it's by far the cheapest option for my 1190r taking into account, longevity, wet road performance. E09 and E10 knobbies are indeed gone very quickly, but most knobbies with soft compound suffer from this, same issue on TKC 80's.
Also a BIG factor for me on the 50/50 tires, especially on an 1190r with 150HP, is the high speed performance of the Mitas e07 (and +, and Dakar versions). They have no problem driving 200km/h on the highway. Some of the tires you are listing higher than the Mitas E07+ are making the 1190r wobble all over the place at far lower speeds. If you keep accelerating, you will fly of the bike, no joke. (starting on my bike from 140km/h already).
NOFI : Not easy to do all that testing, but good job overall. Thx for the video.

Thank you for your comments Dawn. We live in the southern California desert where we don't typically see but a week or two of rain all year! And when it does rain ... it makes our sandy dirt PERFECT to ride in! The Rain Groove cement is the WORST for the 1190r wobble... it is SCARY at times for sure. Thus the reason the Motoz tiers did not do well in that area. Thanks for watching! -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team

Great questions and thank you for watching! Having run both tires on your specific bike I can say that I did like the Motoz GPS tire (front and rear) in my opinion performed better than the K60 tires in the dirt and in the wet. After 6k miles the GPS tires still looked NEW so I dropped the pressure a bit and they performed even better! -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team

I noticed not much mentioned about the tkc-70’s im super anal about tiress , as a road, moto, enduro racer… i have the tkc-70s as my first experience with my yamaha super tenere , a very heavy bike in its class.. im very impressed with the rear performance. At 7000 miles of hard , heavy , and daily commute its a pretty great , tire, BUT the front doesn’t seem to wearing equally at all. And under heavy load it can be a little slippery in a full Max lean…. And its not to confidence inspiring in the dirt … I’ve actually gone down in some loose marbles/sand mix fromt end washed out. Luckily i was going slow.. i find myself constantly looking for a better front now because it will be due to replace with tons of life left on the rear. They are also a dual compound tire which is nice if you need to get up and go , no need to warm them up.

Great work in producing this very comprehensive review!
I've been on the Shinko 705s (2013 CB500X)for about 50000Km now and am very pleased with them. I would love a more off-road front but, with the 17" front wheel, they only seem to exist in big block tyres - of which the TCK80 really disappointed, which is probably why I don't want the 804/805 combo. I found they wore really fast and became dangerous in the rain on-road. But I need something more capable off road, with more side-wall grip so less of my videos have crashes in them 🤔
Thanks for the review - excellent!

had shinko 800's for 6k touring loaded miles, bias version, they did great in rain on turn pike when half doz cars hydroplaned, I did not. Going radial this time, not sure there's a big difference, we'll see if last longer with less touring miles and radial dissipates heat more/7MPH top speed gain because of that. Ran's Devil's Tail with them, was awesome, they corner, IMHO

What would the diff be on off road scoring (sand and gravel pls) be between the Anakee Adventure vs Anakee Wild? Obviously there is a diff but would be great to see how much worse a good 80/20 is off road vs a 50/50

    • @chaparralmotorsports
      @chaparralmotorsports  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Great suggestion Robert. Currently I have scored all of the 80/20 on a scale of 1 to 10 for an 80/20 tire and the 50/50 tires were all scored against their like tires on the same 1 to 10 scale. I did not (or have not yet) compared the 80/20 to the 50/50 as they are vastly different animals. Thanks for watching and for your suggestion. -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team

Thank you for your inquiry / comment @Portland Two Wheels. The Motoz Tractionator Adventure And RallZ ... ARE for SURE one of my favorite tires but two things dropped them down in the test results. #1 Price : The ADV at $310 and the RallZ at $314 they were two of the more expensive tires in the line up. Strike 1. #2 The Motoz tires have a front end shimmy / wiggle on the freeway (especially Rain Groove Cement) which is quite strong. Some of the other 50/50+ tires did not exhibit that feeling at all... Strike #2. I personally LOVE the Motoz! I have them on two of my bikes. No... I have been experimenting with the Motoz Rear and (so far 2 other tires) the Dunlop TrailMax Mission front and the Mitas E-10 Dakar front. Neither of those tire have the "wiggle" and coupled with the Motoz rear will give great performance and longevity. So far I like both combos. -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team

You know what,I searched Google to find out if a 80/20 tire is 80% street or 80% dirt. When you quote these tires as being 80/20, do you mean 80% dirt or 80% street?

    • @chaparralmotorsports
      @chaparralmotorsports  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Great question David. When talking Adventure tires which go onto Street motorcycles that can go on dirt... the first number is the street % and the second number is the dirt percentage. 80/20 is 80% Street and 20% Dirt. Now these numbers are pretty crazy... and are at best Not Consistent manufacture to manufacture. In this shootout the Avon TrailRider is a 90/10, the Shinko 705 is an 80/20, the Anakee Wild is a 50/50 the Bridgestone AX41 is a 40/60, the Motoz Tractionator Adventure is a 30/70, the Pirelli Scoprion Rally is a 25/75. Incredible job, Kyle - thanks!!! Been watching your posts over the past year as you've individually tested these, it's quite the undertaking, and I thank you and Chaparral for doing this! As you've mentioned, the tire manufacturers are really stepping up, and the end result of your testing is almost a case of having too much information. The comments section also adds a wealth of info into the mix, too. My question is - you've suggested a couple of times that you are starting to run individual branded tires as opposed to a matching pair. I think you've said an AX41 or TrailMax up front, Motoz RallZ / Adv / GPS rear? Still rolling with that, or have you had any recent updates/suggestions for 50/50?
