I'm from Russia) Regarding the shot in the back of the head, it was necessary to take 7.62 ×25 mm with a TT type pistol (Tokarev) because when executions were practiced with a shot in the back of the head (approximately 1935-1953), there was no Makarov pistol as well as a cartridge for it. And such executions were most often carried out by KGB (former NKVD) officers. After Stalin's death, this lawlessness ended and the death penalty began to be carried out in much the same way as in Utah, as shown in the video, only the weapon there was just an AK. Several people are firing live ammunition and only one has an empty one, so that any of the firing squad can say that I am not the killer. I apologize in advance if I made mistakes somewhere)
Same here, but he says they get 15 rounds to the back - from a testimony I read, the executioners had up to 15 rounds, but often only used a few in semi-auto... seems a lot more drawn out and I guess economical?...

The lethal injection is pretty humane too because they put you under before they inject the lethal so youre already unconcious with no pain just like when you get put under for wisdom tooth removal both methods are more human compared to MOST of what was happening in the dark ages 😂
As bad as it looks, the makarov method is probably the most "humane" since you instantly die after the first shot, but from the other ones, not so much
Not only that, but the Soviets always told the person that he had been reprieved and was being "moved to a normal cell from the condemned cell". The executioner was waiting in the corridor to shoot as the condemned man was walking away from him. They would not have known a thing about it.

@@qilin9915 Headshots are usually fatal within seconds or minutes, but in very rare instances a headshot can be survived for hours or even days like you mentioned. This is however basically a non-factor in a headshot like this, as the gun is right next to the head and therefore keeps almost all of it's energy when entering the skull, making a possibility of long concious survival very unlikely. The executioner is also likely to schoot again if the target somehow survives and if their not a sadist.Even worse, when the gun is placed right next to the head like it was done in the video, then the gases which follow the bullet will enter the wound and expand inside of the skull, scrambling the brain.
@@qilin9915 ever heard of the term, "Lights are on but nobody is home" thats usually what its like to get shot in the head, lights out, if youre still moving or your vitals are still pulling through its simply your body keeping you running. Abe Lincoln was reported to survive the initial GSW to the back of the head but never woke up again.
It wasn't. Since the Makarov uses such an underpowered cartridge at such close range, occasionally the bullet would curve along the interior of the skull instead of going straight through the brain.
@@sethmcavoy1800 While i am by far not even in the same galaxy of knowledge as real gun experts are, from what i can see from the video the Makarov is most certainly powerfull enough to shoot through the skull and severly damage the brain from such a short range, since it also exited from the other side of the skull.I also find it very unlikely that the Makarov would have have been as popular or even be considered an effective firearm if it was as weak as you claimed it to be from such a short range, which is a claim the previously mentioned video also disproves. And if the gun is placed right against the head as it was in the video, then even if your claim was accurate, the gases which follow the bullet would also travel into the wound and cause enormous damage by expanding inside of the skull.

As a red blooded American, I cannot understand why we left the .30-06 for support weaponry... The sheer devastation from twenty rounds is absolutely stunning.
7.62 NATO was designed specifically to copy .30-06 ballistics with more modern powder. Modern hunting .30-06 uses that extra brass volume to beef it up well past original .30-06 energy levels.
I would contend that if we keep defunding police departments, continue with cashless bail, and allow the borders to stay open with no efforts to enforce standards of law then this information is only going to help the civilian population deal with future problems. So reasonable and educational.
When I was 9 years old or so, we were hunting on a private ranch in central Texas. We got into some sika deer and my dad took a neck shot on a doe at around 80 yards, 150 grain soft point, bolt action .30-06. The round actually completely twisted the neck 90° degrees such that when we got done skinning and quartering, the hide was headless and we had no neck to take home to make into stew or any other dish. How insane to see what a BAR would’ve done to an enemy soldier at close distance in France circa 1944. This just goes to show how the real science of Dr. Thumb is not “fake” nor is it “just for entertainment purposes” and actually showcases educational value to anybody interested in human anatomy and the reaction of biological material (simulated here) to the austere condition of supersonic lead projectiles entering into it. 10/10 would science again
30-06 is no joke. It's the number #1 go to hunting rifle for Homesteaders in Alaska. They drop deer, moose, elk, black bear, and even brown bear when they are problematic. Been binge watching Alaska the Last Frontier. In WWII, 90% of the Germans that were shot by the M1 Grand had 0 chance of surviving a body shot even if most the vital organs were missed. 30-06 just caused so much blood loss. Overkill for Humans.
My understanding is that the pistol shot wasn't directly to the back of the head, but more down at the base of the skull, to sever the spinal column, shock the brain, bring about instant unconsciousness and death. The executioners would wait in the cell of the accused, who had been taken to the interrogation room, only to be told that they were to be freed. They would enter their rooms in a good mood, not really paying attention, and suddenly the lights would go out...!
Either way, I don't think he say that the entire skull fractured on the left side (first slow-mo clip). That dude would have been dead before he hit the ground even being shot at that spot in his head.
Sometimes they aimed for the neck, or the left upper part of the back (where the heart is), so that there wasn't that much of a mess. There was no standard protocol.
The Soviet method was shooting closer to the neck, not the skull, and the head was tilted forward, so you aim at the base of the brain where all vital functions are residing.
Sometimes they aimed at the left upper part of the back (where the heart is), so that there wouldn't be that much of a mess. And a Nagant revolver was generally preferred because the bullet would get stuck inside, again making less of a mess.
@@NewBuildmini There was a sink hole in the middle of the execution room. Everything liquid was flushed down the drain and occasional solid pieces were just collected to the trash. Makarov wouldn't make your head explode, the mess was moderate to begin with.
@@JamesSmith-ix5jd That wasn't a thing in every prison. I've heard many stories, and it was either a drain, a pile of sawdust, or nothing. Usually the prison basement served as the execution chamber, the prisoner would first be read that his appeals were rejected. Sometimes it was done unexpectedly, as the prisoner was being led through a hallway. They did it similarly in East Germany aswell. And in 90s Belarus (according to late prison warden Oleg Alkayev), they took the condemned to a spot in the forest where a pit had already been dug. The condemned would be taken out of the van one at a time, made to kneel a few meters in front of the grave, and shot in the head, before being pulled down into the pit after he was pronounced dead.
6:34 funfact! pressing the muzzle of the gun to the head like that, all that hothot gass is gonna follow the bullet into the skull turning it to mush. probabbly the most humane wau shown
fun fact, that doesn't happen. The gasses aren't hot enough for long enough to cause any real damage by themselves. The stippling and powder burns are about all that you will see to know that it was a contact shot. The projectile itself, along with the concussion wave are what cause the damage. But hey, theres only countless amount of autopsies and medical books to confirm what happens
I'm not quite sure about the USSR, but in former eastern germany, the execution was carried out via "unerwarteter Nahschuss" which roughly translates to "unexpectet close shot". Basically, the guy was interviewed on a daily or at least frequent basis - but one day, as he entered the room, there was another guy, hidden behind the door. He would shoot a little lower than you did, more like the upper neck / lower skull, to destroy the part of the brain used for breathing, heartbeat etc., killing you instantly. One moment you'd be thinking you would be interviewed once more, next moment you'd never think again. If I wasn't against the punishment at all, I'd advise for this one.
YES! I also dont know about the use of this in the USSR but im 100% sure that the shot placement for the russian method would be the same, nape of the neck/lower edge of the backside of the skull. Will go into the brain stem. I guess they just placed it incorrectly in this video. And yes, according to two anatomy professors that would kill instantly. Therefore target is also not uncommon for snipers in hostage situations as the person shot will just drop, avoiding the risk of their last movement causing harm to the hostage. Just that it is more common for snipers to aim from the front, so they will be aiming for somewhere in between the root of the nose (right between the eyes) or just below the nose. There are also cases of mob hits were people were shot behind the ear and suicide/murder with the gun placed in the mouth or under the chin pointing backwards and just slightly up. All are the same thing, just from diffrent angles. The bullet will go through the brain stem in any of these cases.
That's pretty how much they did it in the USSR. One day the prisoner would be taken to the basement, where he'd be read that his appeals were rejected. Then he was led into an adjacent room, where he'd be made to kneel, and shot in the the head. You can see this in "The Americans", in episode 4 of season 4.

Your Soviet execution method is carried out inappropriately, and would most likely result in you losing your job. You are actually aiming higher than a Soviet officer would, and at a wrong angle. The target is brain stem just above the colliculi because theoretically, - destroying the brain stem results in instant death, since it controls vital functions like breathing. Severing brain stem above the colliculi in a mammal, - results in it instantly and permanently falling asleep (which is how we know about the function of Ascending Reticular Activation System (ARAS). You also need to aim at a slight ascending angle of 20-30 degrees, to make sure the compression wave and/or the bullet impacts part of the cerebellum and the telencephalon before exiting, causing massive brain hemorrhage and instant cessation of conscious and motor processes. This is why this method was believed to be entirely painless (although obviously none have survived it to ascertain that claim) and economical, with cases where more than one bullet was needed almost unheard of. So it wasn't "brutal" nor was it meant to be. The condemned would not be kept on Death Row for many years like in the United States, just long enough for the Politburo appointed commission to ascertain whether the case warrants the "Highest Measure" through strong evidence base and circumstances of the crime, and for Leniency Request to be looked at and approved or denied. There was no "last meal" , strong tea with lots of sugar and last cigarette were commonplace, however. Just don't ask me how I know the details. In late 1950-s/early 1960-s the method underwent slight "adjustment" - the shot was fired at a slight angle towards the left ear to minimize excessive blowout damage and disfigurement of the face, which was likely done to minimize psychological trauma to the executioner. Currently - there is no Capital Punishment in Russia, but the conditions of a prolonged sentence in a Maximum Security prison are in many cases so inhumane that the sentiment of many in Russia is that Capital Punishment is a better, more humane alternative. Belarus, however, still has Capital Punishment with methods and circumstances nearly identical, but with number of crimes that warrant it - smaller than in the USSR.
This is true and so did the Germans use this method in WW2. The official documents always say “a single shot to the back of the neck” when the Nazis executed someone on record

@11:03 Frank Hamer's gun belt was made by a Leatherworker out of Longview, Texas, by the name of Bedell Rogers. My dad had a gun belt, (stamped and branded) made by Bedell Rogers just about a year before Rogers died. I'll never forget that belt. It was awesome
Instant sub for the right joke. In Soviet prisons, the "back of the head execution" was done at a slight angle with the shooter standing a bit to the side, not directly from behind (that was done only by inexperienced executioners on in a mass one outside, but then they used to just machine-gun the group, and usually with the target kneeling, not standing. Walls of the execution room were stone, ground was usually covered in clay/mud - so obvious reasons of preventing ricochets.
Hamer's first shots hit both Bonnie and Clyde. Bonnie screamed like a panther. Hamer looked down at the girl. "I would have gotten sick, but when I thought about her crimes, I didn't"
The way GT told it was the first time I heard that version, and it didn't make sense when he said she stepped out and shot an ambusher, but then she was inside the car when Monitor Man shot? Should've put up some thick sheet metal, as the car bodies of the day were a significant factor in dealing with "the automobile bandits". Haven't heard this report either. The version I've heard, from a source I tend to trust, was that amongst the many wounds were lethal head shots to both B&C. Granted there were many bullets flying around, but it was reported that Hamer fired two shots from his carbine, then sat down and had a smoke while everybody else was carrying on. Also, Hamer was well known & respected amongst his fellow lawmen not for being rough & tough and good with a gun, but for his detective work and what we call today social engineering, such as how he knew the pair would be on that road.
I actually saw a video about "conscience rounds" in firing squads (where you replace one of the bullets with a blank, or wax slug in this case). His conclusion was that it was actually more for the man being executed than for any of the executioners. The idea being that you'll know if you shot a blank, because of the recoil difference, but if you think that you might have it, you'd be more confident aiming for the heart. More people confidently aiming at the heart = a higher likely hood of a swift, relatively painless death. Granted, he was talking more about the black powder musket era firing squads of the early to mid 1800's, not the ones in Utah using modern 30-30 ammo

The only reason lethal injection is seen as humane is due to the paralyzing agent injected first. It's pretty horrific without it.
As bad as it looks, the makarov method is probably the most "humane" since you instantly die after the first shot, but from the other ones, not so much
Humane, but brutal
Not only that, but the Soviets always told the person that he had been reprieved and was being "moved to a normal cell from the condemned cell". The executioner was waiting in the corridor to shoot as the condemned man was walking away from him. They would not have known a thing about it.

I don't get why the Makrov method was so disliked. It seems like the only one where it's without a doubt instant lights out.
Headshots are almost never instant and can take hours or days

New NGSW weapons are better

Petition to make “test subject for garand thumb videos” an official execution method
Honestly thats the most humane way to go
Either way, I don't think he say that the entire skull fractured on the left side (first slow-mo clip). That dude would have been dead before he hit the ground even being shot at that spot in his head.
Made up BS. Read about Chikatilo's execution. That's how it was done 99% of the time.
Leave the gun...take the borscht.
Sometimes they aimed for the neck, or the left upper part of the back (where the heart is), so that there wasn't that much of a mess. There was no standard protocol.
1:49 bro is speaking straight FACTS
Peds are Sub Aliens 😂😂

Paul Harrell has tested them. The only caveat is its with his self created meat target. Off the shelf winchester 9mm hollowpoints did better (than 5.7) in this medium. Paul did use a 5.7 pistol, the round was made for sub guns with about a 10 inch barrel so that may be hamstring it.
It was pretty good at ending the Jaffa.
Mexican cartels call the P90 the « cops killer » so i don’t think 5.7 is useless
It’s a pcc. It’s good to a point. It’s no 6.5 garendel, but it’s also no 17 hmr. It’s cool that you can have a carbine and pistol with the same caliber, p90/5.7, but it’s light and fast. No crossover to long range or medium game hunting. Not a coyote or hog round either.

Yeah, I had that thought when he did it. Personally, I say that's the way to go. I would much rather that than looming anticipation or survival.

Granted there were many bullets flying around, but it was reported that Hamer fired two shots from his carbine, then sat down and had a smoke while everybody else was carrying on. The worst execution is saying "who won the lottery i won the lottery"
SMELL THAT AIR! COULDN'T YOU JUST DRINK IT LIKE BOOZE?
@@keerf255 **Maliciously loads Thump-Thump.**
damn it's crazy i just won the lottery and suddenly my dad that i haven't seen in 20 years wants to talk to me again, i'm just taking so many Ws
That's not the joke@@robocatssj3theofficial
Always my luck. Never win the lottery due to the astronomical odds but seem to have always attracted crazy negative scenarios that were also astronomical odds. Welcome to normal life. Lmao
Wow 12:58 that echo of the 20rds from the BAR! That was sick!
You did a really good job with a full auto BAR too, man! Damn!
Wow I didn’t know how insane that colt monitor is, dope video
There’s only one thing I enjoy more than lathering my body up with honey and challenging my neighbors to tickle fights and that is watching Garand Thumb.
What the actual fu-
Can i join you? I have Mad Honey from the Ottomans
Switch from honey to beef tallow or vegetable shortening and boy are you in for a good time
Wouldn't it make sense to issue the challenge first? Honey ain't cheap.
Wtf?
The rounds from the Monitor must have missed, most of the time, seeing as Bonnie's body was pretty much intact. It had a lot of holes in it, but no parts were missing. Jeez, what a blaster!
her hand was shot off though
Bonnie was struck 26 times by rounds
The group probably wasn’t as tight
BTW Bonnie Parker had a open casket viewing but her body was never embalmed i believe due to her gunshots she took and the same for Clyde Barrow The Monitor is a Very Powerful Weapon never heard of it until now
@@rogerstlaurent8704imagine the embalmer scrambling to plug all the bullet holes as the fixative pumps through lol, no wonder they didn't bother
That shrapnel getting smacked and getting absolutely sent into the atmosphere at around 8:40ish was some of the best content ive seen in awhile.
Im guessing you havnt watch Scott’s punt gun to the dummy head yet?
@@feelincrispy7053 the 4 bore into the body armor is my personal fav.
10:11 “lives are expensive, ammo is cheap.” He knows what he’s talking about
12:27 that 5th round was DEVASTATING. What an amazing weapon.
I think the "inhuman" in firing squads is aimed towards the gunners - the stress they have to endure facing the unarmed victim and watching him die... at least thats what I heard
I'd sign up for that job.
@@Germfishmost sane american
@@GermfishI would if I get to keep the rifle.
@@Germfish in the words of Brandon Herrera,
"What's my job?"
"You shoot pedophiles."
"And you're paying me?!"
.... You two are probably mentally unfit to be associated with the justice system.
My immediate reaction to the notification was: “That’s getting taken down, let’s watch it.”
1:45 i totally get it, pedos arent worth the ammo cost, so you have to go with the next best option
