  • Went to take off the front fender when disassembling the car and found someone broke off the lower front front fender bolt closest to the rocker panel. This is what I did to fix the problem.
If the welded nut inside breaks free and just spins, Luis at first generation garage has a great fix for that. Check out his video titled:
“how to fix lower inner door jam / lower mounting bolt hole”. Here is a link to his channel.

Don't feel bad Jim. Those bottom bolts are a nightmare. They are always frozen in there. They get caked with sand and road grime on the top and then as soon as they start to back out they lock up. I tried what you did but ended up breaking the nut out of there and had to use a rivet nut to fix it. That rust hole is a great opportunity to flood the top of the bolt with penetrating oil! Good work getting that drill centered up on the bolt! That was key to that operation. Luis Rocks.

Thanks. I’m glad it worked. I really didn’t want to replace that nut. Thank for watching.

Thanks. I was going to use your fix if what I did didn’t work out. Always there to help a fellow Firebird brother out 👍.

Nice fix! Mine wasn't as repairable as yours. Seems a family was living in it. I just cut the replacement at the rocker line and welded the new in.

I wonder if we had the same family living in ours. If drilling and tapping didn’t work, I would have done the same thing you did. Thanks for watching.👍

I find I have to sharpen my own drill bits to get any decent cutting.

I have since bought a drill bit sharpener. Cheap bits are frustrating. Thank you for watching and for the comment.✌️

I used a piece off an aftermarket part to do something similar.

I was going to use the after market panel if what I did wasn’t going to work. Nice to have options. Thanks for watching 👍.

Great work. I have no luck with drill bits for steel. What brand do you recommend or set for the car hobby? Thanks

Thank you. I have a set of DeWalt drill bits that work good. It seems like the ones that come with taps or easy-outs are just so cheap and don’t work at all. It can be very frustrating. Thank you for the comment and for watching.👍

Nice job. I always put copper anti seize lubricant on body panel bolts or any bolt exposed to the elements.

Right on. Obviously this bolt didn’t have any and I doubt they put any on at the factory. Oh well. I will be putting some on when I put it together. Thanks for the comment and for watching.✌️
