    Hey guys! I have been a fan for a while now and why I haven't thought of this before now is beyond me! Anyway, long story short (yes, I'm a writer of fiction)(nothing published yet, still looking for the right agent...) about 20 years ago, I bought a go-kart from a friend, for my two early teen boys. The kart had a 3.5 Brigs on it that just did not have the power to pull the hills of our mile-long gravel/dirt driveway in northern California. Well, we had an old Honda 200 cc three-wheeler sitting under an old blue tarp alongside our barn that needed tires, wiring, seat, fenders, etc. One rainy day, we were walking past that old Honda and on a lark, I pointed to it and said, "We should put that Honda motor on the go-kart." My oldest said, "Can you do that, Dad?" Me and my big mouth! "Sure I can!" A month later, the brake lever cut down and turned into the hand shifter welded to the left of the seat, (home-made linkage, of course). I had to take the axle sprocket off the kart, grind the teeth off flat, then center the axle sprocket from the three-wheeler onto the go-kart sprocket and weld it home, then remount the kart sprocket back on the kart so that we could run the larger Honda chain on the kart. Then we had to remove ALOT of aluminum from around the lower part of the drive sprocket area on the honda motor to except the new drive angle (~55 degrees counter clock ways from stock.) We beefed up the frame under and around the engine area using parts of the handlebars from the honda and used what was left of the bars to extend the frame on the backrest, because of the close proximity of the modified exhaust pipe behind the riders head, then added a homemade padded headrest covered in Naugahyde. Two new lawnmower throttle cables with a spring set-up in between them to aid deceleration. We used the stock motor mounts, welding them in place with angle iron. The motor sat at so steep an angle directly behind the seat, that I had to make an intake adaptor plate out of 1 1/4" sub-floor plywood, ground down and lined with JBWeld sanded smooth so the carb could sit level! After that, it ran great! However, to check the oil, I had to pick the front of the kart up to ~ 70 degrees w/ the bucket of the tractor, until the "Honda" logo on the points cover read flat like it was still in the three-wheeler! (I did promise a short story!") We would love to see you guys take on this challenge and build one your selves! We double-dog dare ya! (We called it the "Monster" for good reason and on the lawnmower gas tank mounted above the motor read "Get On-Hold On-Be Gone". We clocked it on our longest straight away at 78 miles an hour w/ 5th gear yet to go, but we ran out of road!) Keep up the hard work! From Builder Bob (retired) of Northern Cali!

    I had a 1977 Honda 550 that I bought new when I graduated high school. I had it tuned for peak performance by a guy working at the Honda dealership I bought it from and he was also a drag racer. It was stock except for jetting and a few other tuning tricks he knew. It was insanely fast for a 550. Just to give perspective, I could outrun every 750 (stock bikes) I came up against and I could stick with the famed KZ 1000 up until the 110 mph mark and then it would pull away from me. Honda 550 on a go cart? Now that’s gonna be a wildly fast ride!
    I like it! I’m an old guy now and smarter than I now…🤣

    It doesn't matter so much where in the driveline you change the sprocket (given you are comparing same size sprockets in different locations). What makes the difference is the ratio of the amount of the teeth you have vs what you are replacing. You went from 20 to 16. This means if your top speed was 45mph, you will be going to roughly 56 -->45*(20/16). The reason it seems it matters where you change number of teeth is, say on a motorcycle, the front sprocket has way fewer teeth (maybe 16), so changing 1 tooth either way is a much bigger percent change than changing one tooth on the rear sprocket, which may have 50 teeth. Its all really simple ratios. When you start changing more than one sprocket, things get slightly more complicated.
    Edit: You do need to pay attention to whether it is a drive or driven sprocket of course though.

  • @marcschmitt8130
    @marcschmitt8130 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    For gear ratios, driver and driven side tooth numbers are used for calculations. If for example you had a 15tooth on the transmission going on a 30 tooth on the transition axle, and you swap the 30 out with a 15 you get double the speed. (generally speed is calculated with driver side teeth divided by driven side teeth (repeat for the transition axle) times the rpm at the drive shaft and tire circumference)
    So with lets say 10inch diameter rear wheels, a 15 tooth on your transmission going on a 16 tooth on the transition axle(the one which you attached a new sprocket to in this video), from which a 15 tooth goes on a 20 tooth on your rear axle and an rpm of around 2700 (assuming the engine revs. about 8100 and the internal gearing of the cranks is about 3 and the gearing of the highest gear is almost 1) you should have around
    8100rpm÷3(internal gearing of the engine)*25÷25(gear teeth ratio of the highest gear)*0,06*0.254m(tire outer diameter)*15(teeth)÷16(teeth)*15(teeth)÷20(teeth) = 90.89km/h or divided by roughly 1,6 equals to 56.8mph theoretical speed
    8100÷3*25÷25*15÷16*15÷20 Without these brackets
    this value will always be a little higher than the speed you actually drive if the numbers are right since this doesnt account for friction. In that afforementioned formula, you can interchange any of these numbers with what you actually have in your setup, the brackets are only there for clarity and dont show up in the actual math. If you got the year and model of the engine you should be able to find the actual internal gear ratio of the engine and the gears. The internal gear ratio should be a static number like 2.94 and the gear ratios of the gears should be something like 14÷36 for the first and 25/25 for the last gear.
    If you want to have the highest increase on speed by changing out sprockets you should swap large sprockets out with small ones on the driven side of any axle while keeping the rest at the same ratios.

  • @albrustkern2977
    @albrustkern2977 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really enjoy your personalities, methods and projects. On the cozy coupe steering linkage, as an alternative I have used sprockets and chains. You can play with ratios, or even make a corner. Just another approach to consider.

    Ike it seems like a good idea is to buy a tractor suitable for a grader blade and a front hydrolic setup for a bucket, forks rear 3 point linkage to maintain the long road at your test property, also use it for mowing and slashing the weeds, moving stuff around etc, and while you are about it maybe upgrade the engine grin to a V8 of some sort as a series of videos.
    I'm sure making the drive better alone would add something for the top end speed runs you can do. It seems to be a perfect property without nearby neighbours for all your testing needs.

    I still think you could take the yellow top and mount it over the engine as a hood this way you can still use it and I think it would look cool that way

    John, you don't really need a formula to figure out most of it. It is a math problem, a fraction type problem. If you know the target speed, translate that inot how many times must the wheel go round each minute to achieve your target speed over the ground. After that, it's just a matter of figuring how to take your designed RPM to achieve the rear wheel speed- the jack shaft sprockets just add a modifier to it- call it a percentage effect- if the input is 16 teeth per revolution and the output is 20 teeth, you have lowered the chain speed by 20%. Work through it a few times and it becomes like figuring bore and stroke to get displacement. Always great stuff- Tiny Tyke at 60 mph! There will be 4 and 5 year old kids wanting the very own for Christmas!

    Add in line lock. Not real line lock but somthing to hold the front tires for some sick burnouts.

    Could see you guys putting 100 yard cement strip with a speed reader at the end for your own mini drag strip for these builds for super accurate timing and a hole lotta fun

    I had a chrome chain steering wheel (4 spoke) 18 inch across in my 67' chevy panel delivery , it help immensely since the truck did not have power steering. Though it will fry your hands in summer !!!

    As a fabricator I think what you have done is great. Some of the things you chose to do I question, but that is okay after all I work on heavy equipment.
    You two have more courage than I do running that thing down the lane at 50 plus. But you two would likely think I'm nutter than a peach orchard boar for designing and building my own aircraft.

    Oh my good god I freakin love that thing but it has high speed tankslapper written all over it! Put some steering dampers on there or something, they would help some Im sure. The dyno run/tune will be good , hopefully they have a sniffer on it and can give you a better idea on tune
