    The 550cc Little Tikes Cozy Coupe go kart gets some time on the dyno! We're not sure if our 1970s Honda CB550 engine is the 38 horsepower version or the 50 horsepower version, so we're going to find out on the dyno! We got the Cozy Coupe go kart set up and strapped down on the dyno, and we quickly realized that we were having some kind of ignition problem- on our first high RPM dyno pull, we could literally hear the engine running on four cylinders, then two, then four, then two. We pulled the spark plugs to find that one of them was shorting out.
    We made a quick run to the parts store and were ready to resume testing! Unfortunately, we're still having some sort of ignition problem, because our two-four-two-four issue persisted. In the future, we'll order a new set of coils, tune the carburetors, and give it another shot!
    Thanks for Watching!

    The RPM signal bouncing is also giving you incorrect numbers too. Because it uses RPM in the equation to calculate torque.

    • @rbgamer1008
      @rbgamer1008 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      RPM isn't used to calculate torque, it's used to calculate hp

    • @WyFoster
      @WyFoster 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rbgamer1008 Correct. But it's hard to explain. On an inertia dyno, since the mass of the rollers is known they can calculate horsepower without an rpm signal into the machine simply by watching the rate at which the drum(s) accelerates. In order to calculate torque it needs the rpm signal because it doesn't know if your engine is say a diesel spinning at 2,000 rpm or a motorcycle at 10,000.

    You guys should check the coils but also check the plug wires. I used to have a 1971 CB550, it was doing something similar, it would randomly cut out on 1 and 3. I pulled the plug wires and found that there was a broken wire inside the insulation and it was barely making contact giving me the intermittent misfire. In your case I would put new coils and wires

    Why not invest in a wide band o2 sensor kit to set your carbs? For $150 or so you weld a bung on each exhaust runner and get an accurate reading of the afr, and go from there. Then when you're done, screw some plugs into the bungs and you're good to go. It'll be helpful for troubleshooting as well.

    use a multi-meter and ohm out your primary and secondary on your coils from this set, and keep the best from both sets for "just in case" spares also might upgrade your coil wires to larger diameter like 8.5 or 8.8mm to get more fire to the plugs, she sounded pretty sweet after you changed the plugs and did a little work but as ike said, shes not quite "singin'" the way she was before at higher RPM so either you've got weak insulation or a cooked coil, either way y'all are loosing fire from somewhere, still i love this build, its like the rat-rod wagon on steroids, and i cant wait to see the final HP/TQ numbers when shes running on all 4 cylinders, one step at a time guys like you've been doing, you're slowly running the grimlins out of the project, one small issue at a time

    Well the build is done ... now comes the tuning .. it actually sounds pretty good .. but by the look of that plug “ you should be ashamed of yourself “ lol ... going to the dyno and you didn’t check the basics ! Omg smh ! With a plug like that I’d say the carbs are rich .. that will kill power quick .. especially on gas .. and will also make it run hot .. people think rich always runs cool .. to rich and it gets hot .. lean it out for some more power .. don’t think you’ll find as much as you think tho maybe 5 more HP tho .. really cool projects tho .. thanks for posting the videos .. love them all !

    Your spark plug wires are arcing like crazy! I think your losing alot of power from that!

    Had the same problem with a 1979 Suzuki gsx 1000 . I put new plugs, new points an condenser, the the 4 carburetors rebuilt and tuned to find out I had a shorted out coil at low rpms. I fixed the two coils and now the bike is so quick on take off it's scary . You should check out bike barn for parts on the older bike parts.

    Since you are replacing stuff it wouldn't hurt to have new plug wires and check signal throughout the entire electrical system. There might be an intermittent contact that was created by being over heated .

    I have a 1985 yamaha dt50mx , when the condenser goes bad the whole bike loses power and then after a while leads to a missfire then backfires and wont run. Definitely makes a difference

    They make a CDI ignition for those bikes I used to run them on my old 750. I think Dyna, axcel has kits for those, it's been many moons. Good luck guys I enjoy the videos can't wait for the updates

    It's called bridging when that gunk shorts out the plug = you have some oil consumption issues ... I guessed 32 hp :)

    Add a battery cut off switch? Having had similar probs with a 750 G, being absolutely sure there is no stray voltage finding away to the points, coils would seem worthwhile. Ike- I cannot wish you anymore fun than syncing four carbs, especially if you don't get the ignition problem solved!

    If you gave the engine a good refresh and quality ignition, carb sync and jets it'll make 53 with the pods. They make 50 stock. Well that is what was claimed back in the 70s. But then again that was probably at the crank. So I'll say 44 horsepower if properly set up.

    I’ve had an idea for y’all. I wanted to do something similar when I was a kid, and it hit me again at work while putting a transmission back into a motor grader...
    what about a 6x4 off road cart? The rear axles, if live all the time won’t allow you to steer, but a dog-style clutch or electric pto clutch from a mower could be used to engage the drive to the center axle.
    I have wanted to try something similar to the grader, too, where there is only one “live” axle powering two stub axles in a walking beam on each side, but it would need a differential to allow it to turn.

    It's a 55 horsepower motor (crank) which is mid 40s at tyre .
    Your coils are damaged due to ignition being left on .
    I have owned & dyno'd loads of single cam 550/4 Honda motors

    A can of starter fluid at the Dyno next time. Spray it in at top RPM to see if the breaking up, smooths out. If no, then yea ignition or some other limiting factor.

    You might already know this but most motorcycle transmissions dont actually have an over drive so 5/6th gear aka the final gear is usually just under or at 1:1 and for most dyno power pulls you want to be at 1:1 or as close as can be which is why in a manual car on a dyno they'll run in 4th because 5th adn 6th are over drive gears. You dont want to be in underdrive because it'll give false readings most likely more torque and less hp from my understanding. So if you plan to go back to the dyno please find out which gear is 1:1 it'll give a better more accurate reading then it being in third or forth unless for some reason this bike has an over drive gear and is more like 0.7;1 or 0.9:1

    you can use gm coils from a 2000 firebird v6 in place of the stock coils. can also use them on an ez-go gas golf cart. i use the hp gm coils with 8.8mm wires.
