440cc Murray Goes Full Send and FLIPS!

  • We install a new driver clutch on our 440cc Kawasaki Arctic Cat snowmobile engine and take the Murray Kilowatt for a ride! This 2 stroke go kart isn't blindingly fast, but it's definitely quick. The off road go kart was fast enough to flip when I went into a turn too fast! We still have a few kinks to work out, including the exhaust and gearing.

    So waaaaay back in the day, when the briggs and stratton 5hp engine was the norm for a kart, I had a simple kart. Next to our house was a dirt road. I would go down the road, pitch the kart sideways into a powerslide, and go back up the road and do the same by the house. Over and over. lap after lap.. until one time.. just like you did there, it caught the edge of the tire and tipped.
    I also laughed and pushed it back up. Except the Briggs had the fuel tank on the motor. some fuel came out, touched the muffler.... pooft! kart on fire!
    Sprint back up the road.. whole time thinking, where is a fire extingusher?! Remember my dads boat has one. Jump up in his boat, grab it.... sprint back to the still burning kart.. and PUSSSSHTT put it out.
    Did the push of shame back to the house.... 1 carb rebuild later (burned out all the plastic parts including the choke, intake box, etc) and it was good as new.

      @bladerunner198306 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      lol @push of shame. man do I know that one. But Oh the memories, and the learning of physics and such the fun way. Good story, took me right back to an old dirt road with a Briggs singing its tune.. the 5hp that was always fast enough to tear something up, get you to a great adventure, or just feel the pure freedom that came from just a few sips of the big red jug. All depending on how deep you were gonna bury the throttle that day. Anything to do with a yard cart, even the push of shame.. is still a good time.

      Fires are scary. We laugh at them on youtube. Once you have one of your very own its not so funny. I like the stock predator tank. Its way less likely to spill fuel all over when upside down. I like the dirtbike vents that have the check ball in them. And i like a good tight gasketed fuel cap. Yes i hate running out of vent when the power is wicked up and not enough vent. But i hate fires more.
      Also i like exhaust wrap. Alot. For leg burns and also less likely to light off from raw fuel on hot pipes.

    • @doomman700
      @doomman700 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I doubt that is the key. I would start with spring. If it’s building heat I would add weight but it’s not. It’s boggy because it’s got too much weight.
      So if it has a 200-320 spring in it. I would go up to say a 275-400 and see. That will gain you rpm across the entire range, remember the weights are fighting spring pressure. More here holds the weights longer.
      If you have not , I strongly suggest Olav Aaen clutch tuning handbook as reading. It will get you where you need to be trying to tune cvts

    From my little experience with two strokes back in the day, they rely heavily on the reflected reverse exhaust pulse created in the expansion chamber, which is why every cylinder has its own separate expansion chamber, your 2 into 1 (which is fine on a 4 stroke) will really mess with performance, put a couple of expansion chambers on that are the right size and I bet it will solve most of the probs.

    The "plateau" in the Kawasaki 440 is real. They used to do the same thing when I ran them at Malibu Grand Prix. Same engine, looks like the same clutch, though we ran a 32mm Mikuni carb and a can exhaust.
    That plateau is the engine trying to wind up the clutch. The clutch you have on there is for a much heavier vehicle than the Murray, an Arctic Cat Sled. (By comparison the 'Virage' race car at MGP was 700lbs dry and usually carried 22 gallons of fuel) So you can either re-gear the secondary, or put different springs in your drive clutch that let it start spooling in sooner, and tighten up the belt for a lower "stall" rpm when it engages. I think I would actually try the latter first. Changing springs in the clutch is easier than redesigning your whole drive train.

      @@doomman700 just because it's a 2 stroke doesn't mean the power band is ultra narrow. If it would push a snowmobile through knee high powder at 55 mph, a light kart is almost no load in comparison. These old sled motors are not spinning a ton of rpm, and make peak power around 6k.

    • @doomman700
      @doomman700 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ryan Washenesky well consider I was around when they were racing 440 Kawasaki’s new, se ran mercs but had an invader. It was a liquid sled but it was factory 7800, tuned for 8200 because it had twin Aaen pipes.
      Now you point out less drag, yes cvt is a torque sensing unit and it needs to see proper loading. You want it to hit 6000 and creep upward. Don’t take my word call a clutching guru for help. I know nothing, I only put 3-4k miles a year on snowmobiles and have since the early 70’s. ✌️

    Ive tested a bunch of cart designs,built a few and wrecked allot and honestly,i think you guys did a pretty good job with building your cart with what you had.I can hardly wait until you decide to shoe horn that Ducatti motor into it.You guys would get better use from the motor because simply the cross cart is just the buggy for that motor,makes perfect sense.I know 100% that if you ran the Ducatti motor in the cross cart and matched it with a set of paddles along with the right gearing ,,,,ill just say this,youve never known how big of a adrenaline rush that would be.Yall bring that one to life and out at the dunes youll be pulling cat walks in that cross cart, now that will be impressive allong with the hits on the video of the buuld.Love the vids brother,good stuff.

    That replacement primary clutch is a Comet 102C. those are pretty good primary clutches. Comet makes larger ones that one. if that one doesn't hold up. I always mix my fuel at 50:1 but that's on my snowmobiles. it might be different on a two stroke in warmer temperatures. it seems like it's to high geared. from what John said and it should launch much better.

    Just changing the premix ratio won’t change your jetting enough to help. The needle clip position and jets will make a world of difference if the top end isn’t shot

    • @snapfish89
      @snapfish89 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah for a engine that's probably jetted for 32F or below. I'd say lower the needle, lean it up a bit. (GUESSING)

      yea i was thinking its in the carbs as well and my arctic cat 440s run dual carbs on both the regular and snopro fan variants. i was thinking they could pull a little more outta them swapping that single set up out for a dual set up and i was also a little concerned about the head gasket maybe leaking a bit it seems way under powered compared to what even my old 1996 z440 was and if im not mistaken they did reuse the head gaskets after checking out the inside of the engine but i couldnt remember which motor that was but can make a huge difference... no compression no power

    • @TnTravelers33
      @TnTravelers33 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Dean I’ve never fooled with any snowmobile two strokes but I know on all of my 250 2T dirtbikes when they’re running like that it can only be a few things... ruling out the ignition system(besides the plugs lol) or powervalve(not sure if these have them if they do then that could explain why it’s no throttle then all of the sudden) it’s got to be the compression or bad carb settings. Altitude probably doesn’t effect them so I’d start with factory settings and go from there. Should be 32:1 premix if they’re wanting a safe ratio and won’t be on the pipe all the time.

    I also grew up around these old arctic cat snowmobiles with Kawasaki engines. They definitely used to hit a power band and wind out pretty good. I know you guys are familiar with cold air intakes being that colder air is more dense. Like somebody mentioned I think that you are running rich because you don’t have cold air Running through the motor. Probably need to lean up the jetting. You can figure out how you’re running by running at different throttle positions like wide-open throttle and then just turn off the Killswitch. Take the plug out and look at the color that will tell you how your jetting is.... I think this was a good motor but some of those Kawasaki’s had a tendency to burn holes in the piston. And warmer weather you may want to consider a cooler plug. Always want to build a 440 go cart and you guys did it good job.

    These Kawasaki 440's were quick and reliable engines for Arctic Cat sleds in the 70'. A lightweight version of the same engine is also used still for Ultra Light aircraft. The Kaw. 340 was reliable but quite a bit slower. And from 1980-2005 or so, the Suzuki replacement of the 440 was bulletproof and had no problem getting up to 70 mph. The Suzuki 340 engines weren't too bad and could still make a single seat sled do around 55 mph. They were in the Puma models in the 90s.

    Living in northern Canada, I grew up working on snow machines. Their 2 stroke engine power is very dependent on rpm. That’s why they have CTV drives. Most are tuned to provide max power at around 8000 rpm. A 45 hp engine running below 6000 rpm (this 440 seems to be spinning below that even) will only make a small fraction of its rated power. It’s all in the clutches... let that engine rev!

    I remember in a race snowmobiles with 2 cylinders. Some racers would run a hotter and colder plug. The reason I was given is the cylinder and piston closer to the clutch "work harder". Its probably racer magic. I've had conversations about people trying it in 2 cylinder banshees.

    i wonder if you could add some tabs on the front arms of the murray that are a bit further out closer to the wheels to get the center of gravity down a little bit? boy if you were to widen the stance in the front and the rear about 6" each side i bet that thing would handle both turns and bumps a lot better. love the content as always, love the 2 stroke action! nice change of pace

  • @daversj

    The Murray looks like it would benefit from some larger front tires. Maybe some from a quad and longer A arms from a quad as well. More steering authority and less prone to rolling. Low tire pressure in the front will make it roll over as well. Love the application of a sled motor to a go cart. Fun channel to watch👍

    Wait until it really rolls into the power band. Like you guy’s said, there’s just not enough space to let it wake up. This actually reminds me of a little KTM dirt bike I had. It was a tiny water cooled 50cc bike rated at Ten ponies with an auto, just gas and go. Anyway, when I first got it running I thought it was ok but I definitely expected more. There wasn’t enough space in my yard for it to stretch it’s legs. Well I finally got to take it out to an open field a couple of day’s later and when the power finally kicked in it was amazing how quick that tiny bike was. It pointed the front wheel to the sky while trying to throw me off the back. I just barley managed to hold on. I had a blast feeling that huge surge of power every time it would hit the power band. I also did some carb tuning because I still felt the power (while very strong) was coming on just too late. So I installed one size smaller jets. Someone had installed jets that were too large and choked the engine with too much fuel. After installing the smaller jets it finally ran perfect even hitting the power band in my yard every time. Two strokes are very exciting but they are hard to get the carbs dialed in for. I’ve had a few since that tiny bike that weren’t as easy to dial in.
