With Devil May Cry 5 finally released, it's finally time to rank the best bosses in Devil May Cry 5. We've be ranked the bosses in Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2, Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, Devil May Cry 4, and now it's time for the best and worst Devil May Cry 5 bosses.
This 18-year running franchise holds up suprisingly well for a first time player in 2019. The Griffon, Shadow, and Nightmare fight storywise makes me really sad. I loved playing as V (except Nidhogg) and really liked them overall. They fight Dante because they know for sure that they'd lose and they're committing suicide together in order to stop tormenting Vergil (Because all they're able to do is torment demons) as nightmares from when he was Nelo Angelo.

Agreed. I personally found the fight very easy for the most part but the whole thing was so well executed. In particular, Griffon tearing into Dante with insults after getting to love him being the comic relief was gut wretching for me.

Vergils staggeration may also be a result of his demotivation for fighting his son. I love how at thes start he just says "This doesn't concern you", he doesn't want to fight him at all. While the demon side of him had the fruit to gain power, the human side of him had Nero always helping him, powering his humanity, thus, resulting in a much less motivated Vergil when fighting Nero.

If you're interested, check out William Blake's bibliography, this is where most of DMC5's mythology comes from, including Urizen. And the guy has several interpretations to his name !

Unfortunately, when it comes to Devil May Cry, I don't know that bosses should be ranked from their normal mode because they gain new moves as the difficulty mode goes up.
Just imagine the difficulty in dmc 4 for example. Dmd and hell and hell mode are tough
Cavalier Angelo was one of the best boss fights ive ever played. Everything from the music to the visual flair of it all makes it as fun to play as it is to see.
He’s second place for me. Very good boss. If Vergil wasn’t a boss in the game he would easily take #1
someone "restyled" his boss track and honestly its one of the greatest pieces of music ive ever heard. even unedited its still a fantastic piece of work. the only soundtrack in this game im actually dissapointed in was Nero's theme during the final boss fight, im just not a huge fan on it since it sounds too dance-mix-y

I can't say that any boss in DMC5 is even bad, but the worst is probably the Qulipoth roots. It's not a bad fight, just simple.
By DMC standards it was pretty bad lol. And theres nothing wrong with that because from then on they knocked pretty much every other boss out of the park.
@@PurpleChoops I honestly don't know what you mean. Every DMC game aside from 5 had some extremely shitty bosses. DMC1 had Griffon 2 and Nightmare 3, DMC2 only had like, 3 good bosses and everything else was trash, DMC3 had Gigapede, Doppelganger and fucking Arkham, and DMC4 had the Savior, Agnus and the old priest guy. The Nidhogg Roots are a masterclass of boss design compared to what I just listed.
@Taramafor Haikido And with that, it isn't a bad bossfight. If it serves a purpose and isn't outright broken (like for example bed of chaos in DS1), then it's not bad. Just simple because you can't start the game with a boss that has overwhelming moves.
I mean DMC5 does with Urizen but you're supposed to lose there so that doesn't really count.
Fuck artemis too much running and trying to use snatch on her float things. I wish this fight didnt have those things in the fight and area was a bit smaller her moves are fine.
Honestly, I thought Nidhogg was worse. I feel like Qulipoth Roots would be a good boss if it was more agressive. It's not a badly designed boss, it's just too passive for a game like Devil May Cry. Nidhogg IS a badly designed boss because he fundamentally doesn't work well with V's playstyle. V can just stay at the back of the arena and he'll almost never get hit: the vines can't reach him and all of Nidhogg's attacks give you a lot of time to dodge from that range. The only chance you'll take damage is when going in for Checkmate or getting someone out of Stalemate, but even the latter is unlikely to happen.
Now on replays you can find each hidden Devil Buster attack as Nero.
I love how weakened Vergil is like a tutorial on DT for Nero
They aren't really hidden cause if you have the Buster Arm DB you could use it for those attacks, but having the Devil Bringer makes it easier.

like how you can grab both vergil and his ghost when theyre next to each other.
also, DT improves your buster attack
also, with artemis, if you grab it with the buster. rev your sword. it makes it deal way more dmg and it looks cool af
@@112523 The fact that you have to rev is pretty unique and makes it all the more awesome. Took me the third time to no notice I had to rev, but the realisation itself was pure bliss.
@@blackpants7385 Also applies with the regular hells wielding scythes. grounded Buster on them involves Nero grabbing and then shooting them. Mash shoot to get more shots in, or have a charge shot built up to increase the damage.
For the sawblade enemies, if you mash the buster button you'll get more swings before you throw them.
Also important is that you can fire summoned swords while in DT, even during animations like buster grabs. So have Nero's gun mapped to a shoulder button so you can spam it while you whale on enemies in DT form.
I love being able to hit with the Buster while attacking and exceeding. It's amazing
I'd say Vergil Vs Dante was best in regards to the actual fight but the music in Vergil Vs Nero blows everything else out of the water.
When you up the difficulty Nero v Vergil is outstanding
@@Roymoney1998 Yeah, on Devil Hunter or lower, Nero is outright OP against Vergil but on higher difficulties it levels out.

I found Lady's rocket launcher in the area before cavaliere angelo, and if you use gunslinger with it u can eat his health bar when he goes to charge up for the second phase

It's even easier if you use Double Kalina Ann with high Gunslinger variation. Lock + forward + O/B does a crazy laser beam

fun fact, you can pick up her FIRST rocket launcher whilst fighting Urizen in M10 after the cutscene, when Lady and Trish get fucked by him. It's somewhere on the left if I remember.
During the malphas fight, if you wire snatch the chickens limbs when they teleport Nero will go through the portal and appear right behind malphas (or on top of her) it’s a really good chance to get some damage in.
And I don’t know the timing to do it, but if you use rawhide and wire snatch the chicken (I think when it’s running and starts to trip) Nero will pull the chicken down and put it in a stun state like shown in the trailer
This game has a lot of details and I love it.
This is great. The bosses seem to have as much detail as the stage secrets themselves. It's always been a Devil May Cry trademark, but it's still quite impressive to see.
If you plan to rerun Hell and Hell mode with S ranks in mind at some point, I recommend just going in with Gerbera. 90% of the time she will fall over just by dodging with the invincibility frames of Gerbera. You can use Rawhide too like you mentioned, but thats damn risky in Hell and Hell.
Y'kno it's really great to see that you acknowledged criticism and adapted based on it while still not compromising your own enjoyment.
I really respect that especially seeing how your response was cool headed, yes even the more fired up parts.

Honestly I'm just glad a Devil May Cry game could finally be released finished, with a good amount of content. This is a pure game. Not a cinematic experience. Not an agenda. A game. Good on you, Capcom, Itsuno, and everyone that worked on this.

Dmc 5 knocked it out of the park with the boss and enemy design , Each fight has so many hidden mechanics it rivals mgs 3 levels of absurdity, not to mention the difficulty at DMD is hands down the hardest in the series and requires tons of practice to overcome
Seriously, the enemies are on par with DMC1 enemies and the bosses are, roots aside, on par with the good half of DMC3 bosses. I know some people found certain other areas of the game lacking (not me for the most part, but I still get where people come from when they talk about the environments being boring or V being hit or miss) but they completely killed it where it mattered the most. The mechanics of Nero and Dante are mind blowing, the enemy design is fantastic and the game looks amazing and runs at 60fps. DMC5 is godlike.
@Zakku About V I'm just saying what I've heard from other people. I don't think there's as much about him as Dante or Nero, but he's still very good. I haven't gotten good with him yet, though.
With the environments I really like everything they've done outside of the Qliphoth, and I like the Qliphoth too, just not enough to feel like it's great for like 7 missions. Aesthethics aside, I do prefer the level design in this game for the most part. My only nitpicks are that the game being completely linear makes it feel kinda disconnected, while 3 and especially 1 had a very strong sense of place (4 had this issue too, it was actually kinda worse because you went from a city to a winter castle to a forest to some weird headquarters) and the lack of more interesting rooms once in a while. I'm fine with nearly every fight taking place in open space, but having more interesting arenas like that moment when there are Angelo's blocking your way in a tiny space goes a long way. Again, 5 is probably better at this than 4, but 3 and 1 did it much better. That said, those nitpicks are outweighted by the fact that I never got lost or had to backtrack. This is an action game after all.
Also V's missions had some interesting level design with Nightmare's ability to break through walls. Nero's mission 16 also sticks out for having a bunch of paths to choose.
Sounds amazing. I've only now beat Cerberus on Devil Hunter (didnt have much time the last few days) and it took me like 3 tries. That pupper was tanky! Really looking forward to the harder playthroughs.
DMC 5 DMD is realy hard at first, but once you get comfortable setups for Nero and Dante, it's not that bad...also they provided some cheese moves so those tough Behemoths, Queen Empusa, Hell Adjuca can be gone immediately, which are pain in the ass to deal with.
Except V though. I think his missions are the hardest in DMC history, his griphon/shadow will die mostly on one hit there. Skills isn't needed here, lot of patience. It's good we're not scored based on time completed anymore

9:30 "I needed an Air Dodge" buy enemy step. Also Nero's air taunt let's him avoid just about any attack from Goliath.

Just an FYI, the magic orb Vergil casts is called Judgement Cut, it's kinda like a spatial rift. The Big AOE Slash is called Judgement Cut: End. Great video as always my guy.

@Xpoint_ Data You just said it There's a plan a games that came out that could beat this game I mean yeah I can get nominated but that doesn't mean is going on when and you have to understand that there is a lot of flaws in this game there's a lot of crashes on the PC version and it's not the best game in the world is a mazing a board it is but it's not like all my gosh this is Earth shattering great everyone needs to buy this at $60 I mean realistically amazing game but it's not like we haven't had or will have amazing games
Cory Dorton I sincerely disagree. The gameplay has the best action in any game, the visuals are gorgeous(though admittedly the environments are lacking, but getting other environments doesn't make much sense story wise). The music is amazing, topping it off with the fact you can change the music. The story may not exactly give this over-the-top message, but it doesn't need to because it's given profound messages before, so the story keeps it more personal, ringing with the hearts of fans.
There's only like 3 complaints most people give about the game, but when one of those complaints is that they didn't want it to end, you know a game is truly legendary. So this deserves to be a nominee at the very least. But I have a feeling that Cyberpunk is going to win, because this generation seems to be swinging towards story recently.
Edit: Or possibly Death Stranding. Both of those game are being hyped to the max, so I really hope they don't disappoint and are being hyped over nothing.
Xpoint_ Data Don't forget Death Stranding and Cyberpunk. I don't really get the hype around those games, but apparently they're ground breaking. Though I do wonder if KH3 will be nominated, I hear a lot of people are quite disappointed at it.
@@ftsvectors2164 Well it isn't to go begins a lot of competition yet it but it deserves to get nominated it's a great game for what it is but you have to remember that a lot of the hype surrounding this game is by fans add I can see the game for what it is it's an amazing game but it's not the greatest game ever come out And Kingdom Hearts 3 is doing find it definitely will probably get a nomination And a lot of people complaining and pitching because of all it's too easy in mostly just a bunch of badd memes too but most of the complaints are it doesn't have final fantasy characters and it's too easy well I mean you have to understand it most players have played this from Kingdom Hearts one and with great mechanics and stuff yeah most of them are pretty easy I went through and played both collections and yet they're pretty easy and really the final fantasy characters are neat but they didn't really played that big would impact except in select world that we don't go to and Kingdom Hearts 3 so I wouldn't believe what you hear unless you do a lotteries has been a lot of People are just bitching

What I loved about the bosses in DMCV is that some of them are the original forms of weapons we never got to fight before (Artemis is the laser gun in DMC3, Gilgamesh are the Gauntlets from DMC4).
Imagine what a Pandora boss fight would look like.
Gilgamesh is just the name of the demonic metal the gauntlets are made of, and the same metal that the boss Gilgamesh is covered in.

Pandora is a boss rush as long as bloody palace with 666 boss fights in a row.
Honestly I think Son of Sparda is the "true" difficulty. Geryon and Malphas are quite a bit more intimidating and the Trio can overwhelm you pretty quickly. SOS is when I really started appreciating the boss design.
Even though it was laughably predictable, I still felt like a kid jumping with excitement when we see virgil again and those boss fights had me beaminggggg.

Possibly the best theme used during a fight, devils never cry(I think that's what it's called?) Is imho the best song in general, though there's a couple good ones in dmc1 and 3 as well.

Yeah the Vergil v Nero fight becomes an actual battle on replays
You should definitely try replaying on harder modes. There are actually gameplay differences other than higher enemy HP and damage (such as new enemy combos or their old combos with some extension).

@@aagh8714 Dmc5 as far as I can tell doesn't have a time rating and if it does it certainly doesn't effect score very much. I came back to dmc5 recently after not playing for like 7 months and got mostly s ranks on sos.
Virgil is easily the best boss. He was really fun to use royal guard on too. I got really good at building gauge with royal blocks on the summon swords
DMC5 Vergil as Dante may be the best boss in videogame history. As nero, it may be the best "story moment boss" in modern videogames

What you mentioned during last Urizen fight with Royal guard was EXACTLY what i did same with Angelo and firephase of Cerberus, so satisfying to time it right.

I love how you took the communities criticism, excluding the ones who were generally rude to you, and went to improve playing DMC 5 without using the items and going to try and get some more styles. Tips on higher difficulties. Gerbera is a top tier Breaker for defense and traversal. And Royalguard is your best friend when fully upgraded.
Gerbera has a split second window invul frame when blasting through the air because it functions similarly to its neutral attack, which will parry attacks. And RG's Royal Revenge dishes out pretty good amount of damage with very little downsides.
Oh, and Balrog's neutral punches are useful for parrying, since it's so fast.

@@FenrirAlter its Nioh with a grappling hook! (not that thats a bad thing lol) but yeah it really reminds me of Nioh. Setting, the damaging enemies stamina being as important as health, different styles, etc.
Definitely agree with you about Cavaliere Angelo, I love how the boss plays, being able to put everything I know about the swordmaster into use against him felt so good. Hitting that SSS rank and holding it there for the entire fight, not taking any blows and hearing Dante shout that he knows all his moves because he knew exactly where Angelo was getting his power from left me with a huge grin.

If you're looking for added aggression from the bosses, Son of Sparta and Dante Must Die mode has you covered as enemy behaviour patterns have been overhauled to the extreme really pushing you to master the controls in order to topple them.

You can avoid Goliath's suck move by jumping out of the building as soon as he breaks the wall and begins charging up. Edit: Just saw your text at the bottom lol.
The editing on the "flying fuck you" part with silver bullet starting right after alone made me like you 400% more
the game was a masterpiece a giant love letter for the series and fans and the final fight between the difficulty fun factor and music for dante and nero was a perfect crescendo to an orchestra of badassery
You should do a boss ranking for a Castlevania game, like Dawn of Sorrow.
Cavalier Angelo king Cerberus urizen mission 17 and Vergil when fought with Dante are standouts for me

To add a bit, V gets crazy hard against bosses during DMD , the bosses get so much more fun on those difficulties , I hope you get to play them before moving on to other games.
Man I’m still stuck on mission 19 (Son of Sparda). I’ll get him down to about a quarter health with mid difficulty; only taking about 3-5 health bars on a bad run. But then he’ll pull his doppleganger style out and I just get one shot.
My strat so far is to use royal guard to build up as much gauge as possible, then use the counter or the alternate counter to open him up for punishment. When he goes into DT, I use trickster to evade, gunslinger to get rid of his summoned swords, royal guard if I’m feelin spicy. I punish him with swordmaster, but I just keep getting hit.
Ah well, guess I gotta whip out some smokin sexy style and just win.

After getting through DMD, here are the top 3 bosses that gave me the most troubles (I don’t use Red/Gold orbs so the list is mostly based on the number of retries)
- Mission 19 Vergil.
- V’s familiars.
- King Cerberus.
Mission 20 is easy because it’s supposed to be victory lap, and because of plot. Gerbera can be used to air dodge Vergil’s Judgement cuts infinitely while you fire charged shots at him. You can focus on dodging and Snatch to Vergil when he’s sheathing his sword after a whiff attack. Nero’s Buster completely negates Vergil’s biggest attack, the dive bomb, not only it does A LOT of dmg but also knocks Vergil out of DT. You can do this with Dante’s Just Release in Royal Guard but it’s MUCH harder to time right compared to Nero. When Vergil is low and created a clone, you can even Buster the clone and send it straight to the Shadow Realm lol. Mission 20 is basically just you flexing on daddy Vergil.
Alien 100% agreed that those 3 are the hardest in DMD.
you can negate vergil's dive bomb with royal release aswell i find that one easier to land

great video demod but i suggest you play this game multiple times on the higher difficulties because some bosses gain new moves and a small boost in dmg and health does make quite the difference in some cases
yeah Vergil goes from being a joke in DH to being a monster in higher difficulties. DH in general is undertuned
Yeah kinda like in 3 where starting from Dante Must Die, Vergil uses summoned swords in every fight while in normal he never uses them

I love how he didn't understand the amount of freedom DMC5 gave at first, and thought that in order to escape goliath's tornado he had to sacrifice health or a devil breaker, but nope, my man could just walk out and get some free time to charge up his exceed and gun, I too fell victim to this as most beat-em up's nowadays have a lot of restriction/invisible walls in boss fights, one of the few reasons I love this game!

Good list, and glad you took the criticism in stride. My personal hardest boss was King Cerberus, favorite presentation/gimmick fight was V trio, and the best overall was Vergil as his style, new moves, and difficulty made him an enjoyable challenge (I had a smile on my face the entire way through both fights).
When I played nero in my first playthrough I was so used to dashing around with dante I literally only used gerbera and dashed around lmao
By the way air taunt with Nero is basically a air dodge
And you can even EX-act and MAX-act it to gain exceed gauge.

MAX-acting the air taunt is the only way to use the exceed system, change my mind
And an extr jump since u gain significant height, i fucking love using it to style jump over enemies heads then grab them to me and unleash hell, love this game. Tomorrow starts the DMD run for first time, wish me luck huehue
I think this is the best game in the series. The story, gameplay, visuals, characters, bosses, everything works so well.
i disagree .....best mybe dmc3 or dmc 4........story was weak compare to the other games
@Nafis Zaman I didn't find it incomplete. .it was a great arc just vergil was missing. .it enjoyed dmc 4 more then anything. .it was long hard good story with great music .
The Dante half of the game was literally the same levels you played through as Nero. I love DMC4 to death but it's a literal fact the game is unfinished.
Levels were forgettable, music was eh, and the story WOULD have been great had it not been for mission 20 with Neros bs powerup. Bosses werent thsy great aside from Angelo and Vergil. But the levels were so basic and linear, no puzzles or real exploration.
@@UnifiedEntity I agree. The game mechanics is great, but the level design leaves much to be desired. They are very linear, with almost no puzzle or interactions, and the graphical design is boring.

My favorite boss fight in dmc 5 was cavaliere angelo. This boss felt like a combination nelo angelo and credo fights, basically having everything that was good about those two bosses and even more. it was a true test of my skills and i loved every second of it!
While I loved all the bosses in this game, I think the one that wowed me the most was the Elder Geryon Knight. When he started doing the time shifting moves, I was in awe. May not be the hardest boss, but was definitely one of the coolest. Tbh, I feel like this boss would have been harder had the player not fought him as V. I mean, long range mage vs mostly close range fighter...kind of easy to abuse.

Funny, because that mission is the only one in which I didn't get an A/S, and it's because you fight that guy as V. I don't think is suited for fighting a lightning speed boss.

13:10 you can use enemy step to jump on Urizen to reset trickster (and other skills that requiere touching the ground)
For what it's worth, I appreciate that you'll be playing the reboot. It was my introduction into a series I came to really enjoy and I think it deserves some attention.
I finish all of Dante's missions without any weapons only royal guard it was hell but fun when you perfect Parry all of the atacks also WTF Vergil is so easy whit royal guard

In the Goliath fight when he does his first mouth beam thing he always opens a hole in the wall where you can get out from and avoid loosing a devil breaker arm
Overall, I think Vergil (as Dante) was the hardest boss. Even most of his moves are his dmc3 days, he still is quite tricky to beat. Believe me, it took me a while to get him
I didn't have really any trouble with any boss but the hardest in my play through was the chicken chick

I have to say- suplexing charging Super Duper Demon Form Vergil was the most satisfying thing you could ever do to him.
The Vergil fight is extremely challenging/unpredictable if you play it on SoS/DMD. Lets see if you still feel the same after that
Great boss ranking, pretty in line with my own thoughts. I will say Gilgamesh was the worst boss for me because the build up to him was immense. He was prominent in the teasers and trailers, you get an entire mission before fighting him where just he's interacting with the stage and messing things up for you, and then... a glorified jumping puzzle? It was just disappointing. The gank fight with the knights you do later with V was both more challenging and more interesting, and that wasn't even a boss fight!
Well if you look in Nico's files, you'll see that they are considered a boss fight. At least in their first encounter. Same thing for the nobodies in mission 9.
@@PrimalDragon1740 Mission 9 minutes are not bosses. Mission is not the bosses beside 7, standard enemies, they are sometimes wrong with the reports of Nicon.
This game was fantastic and that Virgil fight at the end was pure badassery!
for the last urizen fight i always try to up trick and down trick in a combo and it feels pretty badass
