With the release of Nioh 2 coming and the Nioh 2 Last Chance Trial wrapping up, this was the perfect time to revisit the original Nioh and do a Nioh boss ranking. I have to say, despite my previous experience, this time I enjoyed myself far more than before. Nioh has excellent combat, solid level design, interesting RPG mechanics, diverse weapons, and a roster of bosses that varies greatly in terms of both quality and difficulty.
Bosses at their finest are excellent like Maria, Yuki-Onna, Date Masamune, Oda Nobunaga, Tachibana Muneshige, Onyroki, Hino-Enmna, and a lot more. Not Nue though. Never Nue. They aren't all great, but I enjoyed fighting the majority nonetheless. I'll sprinkly in thoughts about the best and worst Nioh bosses, but today I'll be ranking the easiest and hardest bosses in Nioh. A few commenters suggested my commentary is lacking my usual energy. Thank you to those of you voicing concern, but I am doing great! I have been working overtime lately for the Nioh videos and more you're soon to see. It definitely led to me being worn out when recording this audio. I've also been making an active effort to slow my speech, so that may have played a role. I'd love feedback if you felt like the tone of my commentary was off. I'll keep it in mind for videos to come!

I'm gonna be honest, bosses like Sakon Shima and Yukimura made me start Nioh all over and run Spear.
And it's really fun to use as well on top of it! It's got so many flourishing, stylish combos that it's insane.
They wielded it like champions, that's for sure. Those bosses made me realize how diverse the moveset of Nioh's weapons can be with the proper skills
@@theDeModcracy After Hino-enma, I quit. I returned using a spear high stance. I was able to finish it and had a better performance.
They make you want to style with spears rather than play boring/safe.
I am still a katana user but lots of fun potential with spears
@@blackjet2000 I have Kusarigama as my 2nd choice but I'm really bad at it. I find my playstyle to be a slow but sure especially with the spear high stance low sweep rinse and repeat. Nearly the same as his bread and butter. But min'es a bit slower but a higher damage output
Spear with Spearfall unlock = rip humanoid enemies. Just spearfall all days and stab them when they fall. (Not really, some bosses just don't fall. But it is so good against Honda and Li)
Fun Fact: Hideyori is the only boss who can parry you.
And when he does his parry, you best back allllllll the way up cuz his parry window is about 45 years long.
Tachibana can parry too.
@@biscuiteaterelliott6367 Muneshige doesn't have a parry. He does have two versions of the Iai quickdraw, one of which is blockable and the other is not.
@@joeb1955 I just checked to be sure. He does. He uses Backwave as a parry sometimes if you hit him while he is charging up quickdraw.
@@biscuiteaterelliott6367 I don't understand how that could be possible since Backwave is a timely guard and you can't perform two actions at once, which is what would need to happen if he does it while charging a quickdraw. Since you aren't guarding while you do it. And since he charges it so quickly there wouldn't be time to cancel out for a block. Because, at least on Way of the Wise and up, that quickdraw comes out near instantly.
@@joeb1955 It has the same start-up animations as the charged quickdraw. In fact, he has several moves that start with that animation. At least four. You evidently have the game; you can test this yourself. Just hit him while he's charging and eventually he'll do backwave.

Luckily after finishing Nioh 2 last week, I immediately fight him again and it took me around half an hour. And I finally finish the whole Nioh DLC today

I mean, of course they gonna one shot you if you're wearing red demon armor, that's the point (you are trading mobility for defense)

I love Nioh, honestly. It's such a good game that brings a great flavor and depth to what we'd consider the souls like formula.
But god, those DLCs.. the levels? Awesome. The atmosphere? Amazing. The story? Loved it. The bosses?
..the bosses?
I could only find it within myself to enjoy three of the DLC bosses: Date Shigezane, Toyotomi Hideyori, and the Nine-Tailed Fox. All the others found me fighting off physical pain as I tried desperately to power through them and adhere to not using Living Weapon my first go of bosses.
Date Masamune, Maria, Sarutobi Sasuke, Sanada Yukimura.. probably the most miserable experiences I had with Nioh. Sanada and Maria especially. To me, they embodied the worst of boss balance the game had to offer.
Massive health, insane damage, incredible speed, hyper armor, projectile attacks often enough, and worst of all non-stop Living Weapon usage that leaves them outside of LW state for maybe 10% of the fight total.
Isn't the point of Living Weapon to be a kind of limit break that gives you great power for a short time? Every other boss in the main game did it right, what the hell happened here?
This absurd combination forces you into the tactics of either debuffing them to hell, waiting around for them to just about run out of stamina in the LW state so you can try and go for a risky knockdown to deal actual damage, or just headshot them with something to take them out of LW state and go for a grapple. What else are you gonna do, try to fight them straight-up and get shredded when you inevitably mess up one dodge by a tenth of a second?
And it's even worse for Maria: at least the others go into LW and drain stamina as a tradeoff. But she doesn't *technically* use Living Weapon, so she has no such weaknesses with virtually all the benefits, with the only thing in your favor being her lightly smaller healthbar than usual.
All that made a good bit of the DLCs I was looking forward to such a slog, which was pretty unfortunate, since I adored the rest.
You were probably underleveled, as was I. Basically in this game you either cheese or get cheesed.
Especially with the double boss missions.
It's break the game or break your controller.
i see everyone complaining about maria.... i killed her my first try with a single moonlight snow... though my odachi ninja build was pretty insane...

If you want to make nearly all these bosses easier, daiba-washi, rinse and repeat.
Watched this after finally beating Hino-enma after like 2 hours to make myself feel better about taking so long. Glad she's so high on the list.
2:49 the transition... amazing
It's crazy how different your experience in this game when using different builds. I used an axe and got one or two hits in before backing off, and my armor was based around increasing my ki and toughness so that I could block often. As a result, my ranking of the difficulties was very different from yours. The sheer amount of different and viable ways to play this game never ceases to impress me - I really like Nioh for it.

@@uafc1 Normal is the intended and Default difficulty that's why. Basing difficulty on purposely unfair or broken modes makes no sense at all.

Yes! I hope you like it this time around. Take it slow, make sure you do the dojo missions as they come available, and fight revenants for 30-60 mins any time you feel underleveled for some fresh gear

Date Masamune was my absolute favorite character & boss in Nioh 1. Such a challenging & fast paced aggressive fight. I was very surprised when I beat all the DLCs but Date was still the top dog in terms of difficulty lol
The irony is that some the easier bosses on part 1 are in fact some of the ones I had the hardest time with and vice versa. Whilst this may be due to our different play styles, as you clearly have a better grasp of debuffs, I also think it has due in part to how some of them are faced later on in the game, whilst I'm best versed with earlier bosses due to my more frequent playings of both their levels and the Twilight Missions
Makes a lot of sense. Of any game I've ranked, I think the RPG nature of Nioh mixed with it's overall difficulty makes for a ranking that will be very different from person to person. Hopefully mine is still an interesting look into another experience :)
I mean, the really tough ones, that are on the bottom of his list, are mostly there, because he bum rushed them and murdered the piss out of them before they could actually do anything and he didn't get to see any of their moves.

@@shahnazkhan5084 depends on the weapon. The weapons he used hit alot an destroyed their ki.
1. Not gonna lie, Nue was incredibly easy when you're playing patiently. I almost always hit it's head when it spits lightning and hit it's belly to break it's stamina, thus breaking it in the middle of it's attacks until it doubles down on the sky lightning.
2. Oh Nine Tails lady is *ungodly* in her side mission. You DON'T get a helper and if I remember she gets him beside her. (I broke a controller against that BS :D)
3. Maria... was honestly not hard for me. The thing is when you explain it, I don't know *HOW* I did. I played extremely offensively and won in I think 3 tries? Again I'm not sure how since I just went in Leroy Jenkins style. (Also this was during the time when I stuck only to the Odachi and high stance)
4. 0/10 list, not a single Tengu on here
Edit: 5. Also I know they are easy to deal with on their own, I'm referring to the god damn team ups they have with other enemies like Flying bolt or *god forbid Nue*

Not sure I'd do a quality ranking. Of the top of my head, I loved Date Masamune, Hino-Enma, Giant Toad, White Tiger, Onyroki, and Yuki-Onna in particular.

Funnily enough, a lot of these bosses were actually on the easier side for me -- though I really wasn't afraid of using Sloth and other debuffs. The difference builds and playstyles make is quite interesting.
Also, a fun fact : if you let Nue hit the bell on the left side of the arena with a lightning attack, it stuns the everliving SHIT out of the thunderpussy. Just deletes its health.
He seems to be just bad at the game tbh. How someone could even name Nue as one of the hardest bosses in Nioh is beyond my comprehension. Even further suggesting that it's unbalanced.
50 attempts at Maria is the icing on the cake. Plus, thinking that being underleveled is actually an issue in Nioh... Not to mention that he could've grabbed overleveled gear from revenants all the time

I think he avoided Sloth more often in this playthrough because in his first Nioh boss ranking list he used sloth the whole way through and was criticized for it.

Hitting Nue in the head when it's eyes glow as it's charging its beam stuns it, trivializing the fight quite a bit
Jin made me put 99 points in ninjutsu. He traumatized me to this day.
Number 0: The Side Mission where you fight Hideyori and Nine Tailed Fox at the same time.
*Edit:* While I never reached it, there's also the Abyss Floor 999 Boss where you fight Both Date and Sanada.
For the life of me, I could not win that fight. The only boss battle I couldn't get through in the game. Cheap-ass crap.
D. G.M. I was only able to overcome the fight by running in circles and slowly doing damage to the fox when I had an opening. The fight took 15 minutes but I was able to defeat Lady Chacha, and after that, it was just a matter of being careful and patient with the other boss. It’s ridiculously tough, though. It’s possible, but you don’t have enough margin for error based on how long you have to bait attacks and dodge everything coming at you. Just an unfair mission in general.
I was lucky to find an interesting sinergy. Basically you can roll a perk on your chest piece called"nullify damage after purification". Hideyori uses an attack wich creates tons of yokai ponds, you purify it( you can help yourself with Kekkai talisman) and deal as much damage as you can. Hermit talisman nullifies stunlock,so you can beat them up without worries. Naoe clan gives you a nice damage bonus after purification,it's good to have.
If you have a good spirit to apply chaos,the fox goes down quite easily; I use Janomecho+Nurarhyon.
100% agreed. On Way of Nioh......this took me around 5 hours......i never cursed so much in my life😪
Yeah, that side mission was a completely BS fight. It seems winnable but it felt way too cheap to be remotely enjoyable. I didn't bother to finish it after a few attempts. It's just bad and lazy multi-boss design, the worst this game had to offer.

What you explained at some point about the level cap was exactly my problem with the DLCs and why I stopped around the half of the 2nd DLC. The level of each mission suddenly went extremely high even double my own level where I could barely hurt standard enemies. I found it so stupid and no fun where I just didn't want to bother anymore.

Edit:Speaking on the importance of the numbers over skill. It hit me like a truck when i got to the 3 kellys at level 80. Finished dlc at 125 it was painful.
I was going to comment about you leaving out the sub mission bosses and ask for an exception for Jin...and then I saw you DID make that exception.

I had to. He's too great (and difficult) not to mention. I know the gank side missions are hard too, but at least Jin is unique. I'm happy I did as well, it would've been a shame to miss out on the great things Nioh has to offer.
I'd say for me it would have to be Maria. Probably both on Way of the Samurai as well as Way of the Nioh. Her sheer speed, power and combo'ed attacks utterly destroyed me so many times. Fantastic vid!

Great video ! Before I watched this video I was wondering where you would put Maria since just like you she gave me the most difficulty and i'm glad you put some respect on her name by placing her at the number two spot.
Personally with me I never played the last dlc so I never got to fight those last bosses because the level gap intimated me too much and I didn't feel like grinding like 40 levels to play so I stopped pretty much after Maria.
Another great, well thought-out list. Pronunciations of Japanese names in these last videos has gotten better too, which is nice.

The only way I'll see the DLC bosses is through your video. I loved the main game but can't stand the DLC. Everyone's opinion is valid and that's fine. But when I am getting 1-2 shot by literally everything when I beat the main game with no problem, I am no longer having fun, and don't wanna go through NG+ just to enjoy the DLC. Cheers!
nah they did ramp it up a little too much. it kind of ruined the fun, as i felt the base nioh game was superior to the dark souls series, but the dlcs seemed to be more about invalidating strategies than adding interesting mechanics. i used to backstab like i was in a tenchu game, but those stupid centepede neck guys barely felt it, and could counter grab-kill you.
@John Bennett There's always the one git gud guy. I'm just ok at these type of games. I've beaten every SekiBloodSouls game plus the dlcs for those. I'm not the best at them, but I have enough experience with those games, plus having beaten Nioh to feel a bit of validity in thinking they scaled the Nioh dlcs wrong. But hey you're probably better than me at the game and so are a lot of other people. But when I'm not having fun, that's when I'm done.
John Bennett Why are you defending the DLC? All three of them were full of bullshit. I’d much rather Team Ninja go back to making Ninja Gaiden. They can’t make balanced ARPGs to save their lives.
I literally just played through the dlcs for the first time and it was hell. It was 70% fun 30% frustration.
They clearly didn't balance them properly towards a New game. What they should've done was make them available in Way of the Strong and beyond only. I started a New Game on PC (after getting platinum trophy on PS4) cause I bought the complete edition, since I had only ever played base game. Now, I still think double bosses are pretty bullshit, especially Obsidian+Oda cause you fight so many enemies before them. But not even that was as stupid hard as the dlc. Not smart hard, stupid hard. Everything 1 or 2 shots you, you deal so little damage and there's even more ambushes and ganks as main game. Maria in particular pissed me off cause of her instant grab and it took me a while to beat her (I was underleveled like 70 levels or so). After finishing the dlcs I went back on a more appropriate level and destroyed her. They're really unbalanced and it's a shame cause most of the fights are fun (save for grab attacks and ganks) but the damage and tankiness is just absurd

I'm glad you added the bit about Serpent strike+Foot Sweep+Finishing Blow, because seeing you use a kusa and all the human bosses on this list was a little confusing. Also, hardest boss drops the best gear. Infinite shuriken makes living weapon bosses much easier because even though the damage is lower it drains their ki at a normal rate. Extended I-frames makes it more like Bloodborne and Truth from the 7-piece is a huge damage boost. If Red Demon = Glass Canon, the Dragon Ninja = Glass Nuclear Bomb.
I just beat Nioh last night and I seriously watched your ranking list every time I fought a boss for tips. The eight headed snake was the key one I beat it with no Elixirs lol
Wow, this video reminded me many good moments, but also a lot of bad ones while I was playing it. I considered dropping the game with umi bozu until I found an op strat to defeat it, but the hardest and most unfair boss was hino emma without a doubt (didn’t play dlcs). Good video man
Hino Emma is an absolute joke. If you got stuck there then it's good you dropped it probably
@@itsokay7989 I played through the whole game and she was the second to hardest for me. Low health bosses are by far the most luck or stat dependant in the game. Every single one of her attacks/combos oneshot/paralized me and got me killed, so I had to get a no hit fight outisde of living weapon. Experiences vary a lot in Nioh.

Nice video, I agree that balancing the DLC around having NG+ gear was a weird decision.
Maria was the boss that made me realise the thing you pointed out about the DLC level requirements. After an hour of getting murdered, I went back and ran through a decent chunk of NG and started to properly tune my weapons and armour. When I came back, I killed her on my second try.

13:49 and this is why random weapons dont work for balance, they always end up with this absurdly high number that is hard to balance.
this is why i still defend static equipment numbers(with upgrades), deliver a much better experience.

Thank you for taking the time to revisit Nioh. I know it was not your favorite experience initially and it doesn’t hold a candle to the Souls experience that most people went in looking for. Nioh was advertised as “Samurai Souls” erroneously. It is essentially a 3rd person action RPG Diablo set in Japan. After I treated the game more like playing a clunky Ninja Gaiden, the mechanics got much easier. The boss designs are centered around different weapon strategies as in the Ninja Gaiden series. And Team Ninja has much more experience making that kind of game centered around katana combat rather than most of their other weapons. You may have had a very different experience playing katana, spear, and hammer/ax rather than the quick weapons like the kusarigama. Either way, Nioh certainly is more designed for people wanting to experience the Diablo loot grind and pressing buttons to make the numbers go up rather than tight and excellent enemy design. Nevertheless, I thoroughly respect your perspective on the game and it’s bosses and I appreciate you revisiting one of my favorite games of the last decade.
Hino enma forced me to quit for almost a year. The same thing happened with Father Gascoigne for me too. But once I got over Gascoigne and Hino enma, I really enjoyed both games, and the satisfying feeling of beating them was unmatched

Funny thing about Sasuke was I got the “beat the boss with only tonfas” achievement on my first try without deliberately trying to get it
Nue's lightning breath is a perfect time to hit its side, a big glow bit makes it quick to take out his Ki by hitting his side during it. I got him down in 3 attempts my first time playing the game. Heno-Enma, however, 30ish tries.
You can hit the see through parts of Nue when they're glowing to stagger him and do massive ki damage.
I played the hell out of this game when it came out and I really enjoyed the experience. The dlc turned everything up to 11 when you got to way of the wise/nioh even with the 750 max level and level 310 gear bosses like Maria will shred you in a flash with a single mistake. But pulling the wins out at that difficulty is beyond satisfying.

8:00 Nue's "roar backward and lightning" attack range is not "short radius around its body", but your current position. Such perception is the result of standing around it. If you're far from it, the lighting will still hit you if you stand still.
For Nue there are to tiny places that have a ceiling that can be opened by nue’s attacks that lightning strike can hit you in. If you bait out the multiple lightning strike attack take cover and then throw a shuriken or kunai it will delete his ki instantly then just go for some attacks then rinse and repeat
Jin hayabusa is a pain flying swallow attack with a lot of very fast hits and huge endurance.
The key to making a lot of these bosses a whole hell of alot easier is not getting greedy.

Jin Hayabusha has the Dragon Sword, uses Art of the Inferno Ninpo and he even uses the Izuna Drop (23:49)! Holy Shit!!

Another great ranking Demod! I'm a little embarrassed by this but the hardest boss in Nioh, for me, was Okatsu. I just really suck at dodging her attacks 😂

As someone who is finally finished with my way of the nioh playthrough of the game prior too the sequel coming out my top 3 is a bit different. My top 3 are as follows, 3. Mitsunari(that wind debuff sucks) 2. Sanada(that wind living weapon phase is so hard to I frame through) 1. Jin hayabusa(the combo of speed and attack power is so rough to deal with). My difficulties may have been compounded by my refusal to have less than a agility or use any weapon combo other than triple sword but that was my experience with the top end atleast.
Okatsu is my favorite boss fight in Nioh 1. And that soundtrack is amazing
I finally finished this game in September after a lengthy full playthrough (by full I mean platinum) but there are a few of those ludicrous post game side missions I still need to do, and all the dlc. Definitely gotta get back to it at some point
I love how the attacks and movement in Nioh are like Ninja Gaiden 3:RE but more polished. I stopped playing Nioh 1 before the latest DLCs were released, but seeing Maria that high up on the list doesn't surprise me. She uses the same fencing skills as Regent of the Mask.

I didnt mind the Yuki-onna fight when it was just her, when its her and Nobunaga, I spent like 8 hours fighting them two finally getting lucky enough to kill him and make it a solo fight with her
even if you dont like sloth, the double team missions make it much less slimy feeling.... i usually slothed nobunaga and went for Princess Noh... (had to farm nobunaga's smithing text for my armor setup)

I got stuck on that fight for a solid 4 hours. I was tired af and refused to go to sleep until I could beat them. Totally worth it.
For sarutobi sasuke I found a way to loop his attacks, putting him into an ai loop. It’s very complicated. Using the duel swords I r1,r1,pause,r1,r1,pause, repeat until dead. To improve consistency, sprint toward him during the pause period.
I give props to spear builds. Seems tough if not in open areas. My first full playthrough I used an axe and odachi and did a tank build. Gotta try a ninjitsu build soon
NPC Living Weapon modes will only end when they're out of stamina or knocked down. Their stamina doesn't regenerate while they're using LW iirc.

I actually have a funny story.
Earlier today, I beat Hundred Eyes and unlocked the 3 DLC regions. However, I have yet to complete them, since I haven't tried. I originally started Nioh around late 2017-early 2018, and I got my ass completely whooped by EVERYTHING. Even Onryoki was mopping the floor with my blood! Now, after 5-6 years, I've returned, and I speedran the game INCREDIBLY underleveled (I beat The Demon King Revealed at around level 85) and whooped Yamata-no-Orochi my second try. The first try, I made it to the last phase with no stuff except for Salt, and so I was screwed. But I came back with only 3 elixirs and knocked it around! Then I beat Hundred Eyes in less than 30 seconds since my Kusarigama was INSANELY ridiculous. Well..I may have been using Lifeseal, Sloth and Weakness Talismans along with Power Pills, Maxed Kunai, Storm Kunai and Shuriken, along with sneaking by most enemies with Suppa and Catwalking Scrolls, and the only boss that slightly pissed me off was Saika Magoichi (damn arena with flames), so I jokingly called myself a pussycat. But, I now have the DLCs unlocked, and during all those times ago, I remember me not being able to beat Jin. But I did know what he dropped. Now, I've returned, ready to kick his ass. Buuuut, I have to beat the DLCs first. I remember when Date Masamune made me chuck my controller through my closet wall, and Yukimura made me shut off my PS4 and kick my headphones at the wall! And Jin..let's just say a lot of stuff broke during that time. A. LOT.
But yeah rlly great vid! The only problem I have was with Maria. Yukimura was insane. But it's your gameplay, so I won't judge :D

This is so different to my experience in ng+ and so on since all i used was the fire tiger spirit animal spell on everything to knock it down and do a stab, switch to the wind peacock and knock them down and repeat, giving them confusion, before that i slowed their defence and sloth them. This technique made me clear most bosses that were a pain like maria, but many others didnt work in like masamune, and im glad, that fight was beautiful
Usually confusion and lw with reaper skill can melt any boss in ng

Yeah, low health bosses really are very luck dependant. I needed about 100 tries because of her very inconsistent hyperarmor. Sometimes you can stagger her for two hits and sometimes you can't at all. She one shot me with all of her combos also breaking through my block when I tried that. Easily the boss I had the most trouble with.

Great video/ranking. While I found Ogress a lot easier (high stance spear destroys her health pretty quickly), some of the bosses were right where I would rank them. I played through with a spear and magic build, so fighting spear wielding bosses was a bit of a pain due to having the same reach. Can't wait for the next video.
DeMod have you never thought about playing Monster Hunter World? Basically, it 's a game with many bosses and the goal is to kill all the bosses. I think it will be great have a ranking video about the monsters in MHW and Iceborne.

I agree with you about the difficulty spikes in the game. I finished the main game today. Spear/light armor build with no magic or ninjutsu at all, I didn’t want to trivialize any bosses with magic because I had heard it was busted. Went to the DLC after finishing and it feels like even the basic enemies are total sponges. I feel like the only reason I’m not being one shot by everything is because I have over 3k health since spear scales with body. I really loved the game but I don’t feel like having to to NG+ just to do the DLC. It’s a shame because the bosses look really fun
Have not played nioh in a couple of years got it up again and I still have my hayabusa build. I love izuna drop skill. Also starting over and being a solo blade build. Love counter offensive single katana.
Nue was my first road block - had to stop playing because it was makeing me angry so came back to iy about a week later and eventually beat it after 2 hours of trying
I loved the Maria fight, I rematched her so much times I could beat her blindfolded. I pretty good move make her mission just the boss fight

@@Kaosxca block... you can block 99% of stuff with the right weapon... i mean, you can block ALL of onryoki's moves except the ball toss with any weapon.... you might get ki broke but he physically cant capitalize on it between comboes

foe Nue a good trick is to hit the sideo f his face when he charges his laser beam... it will usually ki break him... leaving him open for a great wombo, as long as you don't over commit you can get nice damage without being thrashed by the roar
