With Metal Gear Solid celebrating it's 20th anniversary last year and the highly ancitipated release of Death Stranding from Hideo Kojima's new studio, I'd like to celebrate by doing a ranking the best and worst in the Metal Gear Solid series. I'll be ranking the Metal Gear Solid bosses, Metal Gear Solid 2 bosses, Metal Gear Solid 3 bosses, Metal Gear Solid 4 bosses, Metal Gear Solid 5 bosses, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker bosses, and the bosses of Metal Gear Rising Revengence, all leading up to a boss ranking of Death Stranding.
It's my first time playing Metal Gear Solid 3, and it blew my expectations out of the water. What an amazing game. Today we'll rank the bosses from worst to best including The End, The Fury, The Pain, The Sorrow, The Fear, and The Boss. I play a variety of games so I'm always excited to cover new series! The Top 100 will return after Death Stranding. It will be the main series I focus on into early 2020 alongside a few other vids I have planned.

I love how Solid Snake questions why everyone he meet keeps dying in MGS1 and Big Boss doesn’t even question why everyone he fights explodes.
Actually he does. When you fight and kill The End or The Fury if you call Major Zero Big Boss asks "Why do they keep exploding?" and Zero will explain it's part of their legend that the cobra unit used to carry micro-bombs with them in case they were ever captured and needed to commit suicide. It's a pretty cool explanation.
Its so funny if you call Zero after the fight with The Fury BB goes

The Fear Easy Mode:
Drop poisonous/rotten food on the ground. Fear will eat it all up.
The fact that almost every boss in the game has a way you can exploit them to make the fight easy is one of my favorite things about this game.
And the fact that The Boss *doesn't* is a testament to what an unstoppable badass she is. XD
Aaron Schwartz Fear Baby Mode:
As soon as the fight starts, take a fake death pill to trick him. When he’s convinced you’re dead and starts walking away, pop in the revival pill. He won’t see you stand up which gives you a little advantage to throw a stun grenade at him. Make sure you don’t stun yourself though. As soon as he’s stunned, pull out the AK47 and go off on him. Instead of his health, his stamina will start draining super fast and before you know it the fight is done finishing him off non lethally.
Whole thing takes about 15-20 seconds
Alternatively... Torch strats.

Metal Geat Solid 3 had so many good moments, especially when you fight The Boss.
You can demolish Volgin with the CQC slam then lie down to dodge his shots.
It's true but the thing with CQC and Volgin is you can't just approach him Willy nilly you have to wait for him to deplete his charge which can be shown when the fight arena is orange instead of electric blue before he runs to the corner and recharges. Granted the game doesn't tell you about that but I love that detail and I love the volgin fight because there's so many small things you can do to make it easier. Course I'm a dick I decided to take out the RPG and kill Ocelot instead because TIME PARADOX!
This is really weird seeing someone actually killing the bosses since i'm so used to taking them down non lethally, mainly through liberal use of flashbangs 😂😅

The saddest moment in this game is killing the final boss with the good old Zombie + Snow Camo Combo.
I was in shambles once all my end-game cutscenes were with the zombie face
As much as I love the bosses here, some do feel quite familiar:
Ocelot - Olga (similar concept and arena, except you have to attack ocelot when he reloads like in mgs1. And instead of shooting the lights with Olga you can drop the beehive on ocelot)
Sorrow - Psycho Mantis (looks into your past actions, easily the most mystical fight in the game and the trick to defeating him requires you to think outside the box)
Fear = Gray Fox (with the stealth camo, jumping around the arena and can be exploited using thermal goggles)
Fury = Vulcan Raven (Essentially Raven with a flamethrower, the arena layout is the same too. You can't attack him from the front. He has monster vision. He even starts sprinting like raven partway through the fight)
Volgin = Liquid (hand to hand fight in a badass arena with the blonde haired antogonist with a timer leading to an explosion. Except this time you are below the metal gear instead of above it. Oh and you get punished for pulling out a gun like with Gray Fox)
Shagohod = Rex and Ray (ok so the similarity is kinda normal since it's another metal gear but having to destroy it with the rocket launcher and aiming at it's lower body to stun it. Also the attack with the laser and the missles was in rex and ray too)
Boss = not too much similarity gameplay wise as for once you get to use all your equipment for the final boss though they did re-use the 'timer for our final fight, if you can't defeat me in time it explodes' thing from Liquid and Volgin
The End = All the mgs games other than 2 have a dedicated sniper fight. This one is just by far the longest lol
The Pain = I got nothing. It's just a guy with bees...

What I absolutely love about this game is that damn near every area, boss fight and stealth section is so packed full of detail, easter eggs and little tricks that really make replaying this game feel amazing. Getting stamina kills against the bosses to unlock their boss camo's, blowing up the supply sheds and armories to lower the soldiers morale, trying to interrogate guards and slitting their throats because of the sensitivity of the circle button as well as the many codec calls, weapons and food. I love this game, always have always will. MGS2 will always be my favourite game for just how daring it was with its story telling but god damn this one has my heart and then some.

Have you considered doing a God Hand boss ranking? That game is absolute bonkers from start to finish and it has a bunch of awesome bosses.
Quick strategy for Volgin:
Once you unlock the Patriot, use it to UNLOAD into him. Do not stop when he tries to shock you. The rate of fire on the Patriot and the damage it deals forces him to block 24/7, and eventually, his shield will break, allowing you to deal devastating damage.
I love how at the end of “the Boss” fight the game makes you the one to pull the final trigger. Usually in a game the hero would just kill the villain in the following cutscene. But here the game has you be the one to pull the trigger instead of it just being a simple cutscene making it that much more impactful.
Honestly, The Boss, deserves her own game. She's such a badass.
I was a bit on the fence expecting you to rank MGS 3 bosses about their difficulty, so I'm super glad you decided to go for quality instead!
This video triggers some sad emotions... I only fought with the boss once, in the original ps2 version... Is the only boss fight i have that tear me up (in a sentimental way) I cried back there and I cry know. What a good game.
This was my first mgs game I played in the series. I have many fond memories of playing this.
I recently beat MGS 3, and I actually felt the emotions coinciding with the Cobra Unit.
I felt annoyed at The Pain. His face and the hornets he controlled made me tense up. Like they were crawling and stinging me.
The Fear kept me on my toes, and my heart was pounding with fear. I almost lost because of how pressured I felt.
I felt tranquil and zen when I hunted The End. I was calm, and aware of everything. Looking for the glint of his sniper rifle. Sniping him with only my M1911A.
I was so pissed at The Fury. Because his mechanics made me rage. I hate flamethrower enemies in most games. Because the damage they do, and the fire aftereffects. So he made me scream a lot.
This sense of foreboding and sadness washed over me when I confronted The Sorrow. Because I knew what I had to do to complete my mission.
And with The Joy, or The Boss. I felt nothing but exhilaration and excitement. My blood was pumping with laughter. I was so focused on winning, and when I won, I cheered.
Like most Joy Highs, I crashed down to reality. As I finished The Boss, and I cried.
You monster, you actually used guns in The Boss fight
Yeah because The Boss would totally never use a weapon, at least not one with infinite ammo because as the game outright states... the magazine is shaped like an infinity symbol.
@@Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective I know people can play however they want, but The Boss fight should be won with CQC. It's feels right to beat her with the technique Snake and her developed, not to mention the bonus of the stamina kill.
Cqc mosin negot and hushpuppy
CQC has always been my go to for the Boss fight
applying CQC on the boss fight is pretty hard for me because she's fast and you only have 10 minutes time limit fighting her
Something I love about the sorrow bossfight is that it not only includes just the regular footsoldiers, but also the previous bosses you've ended as well. It really got to me when I heard that parrot calling out for his Grandpa.
Yeah, and the funny thing is you can actually catch and release the ends parrot and it'll fly towards him and give away his location. I love tiny details like that.
All the bosses can be taken down by fully depleting their stamina instead of their hp for pacifist runs, which changes up the strategies.
For example, The Fear's stealth camo is highly taxing on his stamina, so at some point in the fight he'll likely stop hunting you and look for food. When he does so, you can throw out any bad food you've collected, causing him to vomit and take further stamina damage.
Ah, early to the D-Mod party. Makes my day that much better!
the pain is so much easier if you have smoke grenades. Beekeepers use smokers in order to calm down and pacify bees, and the smoke grenades do the exact same. Just toss one and empty your AK into him and he’s done in 5 minutes at the most
MGS3 had the most fun Bossbattles in all of gaming, every single one was a highlight.
If you compare them with the rest of the series, in my opinion, only a very few can reach them.
I would name Ocelot in MGS4, Rex vs Ray, Crying Wolf and maybe Fox & Sniper Wolf.
Fatman is underrated.

I'd probably say my favourite boss fight in this game is naturally against the Boss. The fight has everything, it has narrative impact, emotional impact, it has a beautiful setting, it has perfect balance with what the boss can do and how you can respond and it also has a few easter eggs like the reference to Liquid, Solid and Solidus found in the fields.
I replayed this game over 50 time when I was younger. I enjoyed getting all of the special camos in that game. It was one of the games that made it truly rewarding.

There’s a neat trick to beating fear in about 15 seconds (non lethally). I think it’s a glitch and great for speed runs.

I still think the part where Naked Snake jumps off the dam (a la Harrison Ford in The Fugitive) is one of the coolest moments in the series.

Great list something to note about the fear is that he can be trivialised by using the fake death pill, revival pill, flash grenade and ak-47

For the Fear there is actually a cheese way you can kill him that speed runners do, you basically use the fake death pill, let him believe you are dead, revive, use a stun grenade without him noticing you, and then unload. It makes the ak do stun damage for some reason which is really fun, and helpful because when you defeat a boss nonlethally on mgs3 you get camos from them. The Fear has one of the best camos in the game in fact because it gives you super high camo index, but your stamina is eaten away at like crazy. It's an amazing burst stealth item that can help big time, on my European Extreme run the camo became a godsend, especially because I was going for no alerts and all. The End also drops a sniper if you defeat him nonlethally, if you hold him up you get his camo which gives you stamina. Volgin also has a few neat aspects to him too, a glowing mushroom cap can get his electricity, the death pill is great distraction too, and I think the water camo helps somehow? He has a lot of fun chances to fuck around with him. Most of the bosses can actually be fucked with by the death pill, besides The Boss. The End's Sniper with the Tranq pistol helps big time with The Fury. Did you watch the video I mentioned on your mgs2 video btw?

MGS3 is my favorite game of all time, it does so much things right, and it is so crazy how it is, and its themes, ideas, its emotional beats, the mechanics, everything... Utterly beautiful.
The ending also gets me to cry every time. Every.
Time.
Also again from what I know, there was a boss rush in some version of mgs3 that included the ocelot unit as a boss fight.

In the Boss boss fight there are 3 white snakes you can find in the map I believe they're call solid liquid and naked and they carry over with you to NG+, nice little Easter egg that I've always loved doing during that boss fight

Thx. This video was pretty good. You can also put the "raiden" mask in the volgin fight and he will distract and you"ll have a chance to punch him but only works once. There are so many details you should make a video of them XD. In MGS4 i think liquid ocelot in the sencond phase combat is the hardest one
I like this list. One thing I don't fully agree with is a couple of the things you mentioned in the Ocelot fight. His gimmick is that he's supposed to be a fast learner, if you shoot the hive off the branch, he'll do the same to you. He gets more aggressive and gets better at ricocheting his shots the longer the fight goes on.
MGS 3 is my 4th favorite game of all time.

When I first played MGS3 (around the time it came out) I swear The Fear appeared to me like one of the hardest bosses ever, then The Fury was also hard and so on, and I also remember it took me like an hour and something to defeat The End, like, back in the day without any youtube gameplays n stuff it was really difficult to beat these dudes and now is impressive how most of them had so many hidden weak spots and you can beat most of them really easily just thinking outside the box (pun intended, is a Metal Gear game) so kudos to Kojima for making all these incredibly engaging boss fights
Hey if you ever go back to this series I'd really recommend learning cqc it adds such an awesome layer to combat and increases the number of strategies available to you by a lot

I also recommend you play the game again knowing how to use cqc the game doesn’t explain it at all and it kinda sucks

MGS3 has the only final boss that doesn't rely on gimmicks. It's basically The End's boss fight but without the major drawback of having multiple loading screens combined with CQC action.

Ocelot doesn't feel intense like a boss fight at all, which is why it's my second favorite. It's just fun gameplay with a great character and music.

The End is amazing just do to how many ways you can go about it even killing him before the boss fight or just sleep for a second and let him catch you.
Something I realized about the plot of this game that is hilarious and infuriating (MGS4 spoilers!):
After MGS2, the question the whole fanbase was asking is "who are the Patriots?!" And then instead of answering that, Kojima makes a prequel that seems to have nothing to do with MGS2; I knew some people who were super frustrated they had to wait a whole other game to get any answers.
And then in MGS4, that magnificent bastard Kojima just casually drops the fact that he *did* answer everyone's question, because the characters from MGS3 *are* the Patriots! Fricking genius storytelling...

Trying to shoot all those GODDAMN FROGS when riding EVAs bike. Who’s freaking idea was it to make you use a sniper rifle to shoot a tiny, hand sized toy, half a mile away whilst riding a high speed motorcycle WHILST said bike is swerving to dodge bullets??? Also the forest🤬🤬

I know the Boss is pretty much the standard pick for best boss here and the end is the one with the best athmosphere but from a mere boss fight perspective i always liked volgin the most. Also best boss theme by far.

I still think that the Gehrman fight is a direct reference to The Boss. Both fights are beautiful and emotional and deserve the top spot on whatever lists they appear on.
Unless, its like a top 10 worst bosses list. Then maybe not.
Volgin is meant to be defeated with CQC.
Dodge his hits, get his back and throw him to the ground. If you use the luminiscent mushrooms you can neutralize the AoE attack and finish the battle completely unscathed. And getting his camo.
Hey Demod, is there any chance that you could do a ranking of No More Heroes bosses?
I think the real question here is, how many times did you try to get an enemy in a CQC hold and accidentally end up slitting their throat because of the controller sensitivity. I'm pretty sure 90% of the ghosts I fought in my first playthrough just came through that alone.
Off topic question but are you going to finish the kingdom hearts boss rankings and also the top 100 games of all time? You said that the top 100 would be spread out over the summer and my summer was RUINED because it abruptly stopped! Kidding of course but really I do hope you continue both of those I was loving them!
Edit: Just saw a comment of you saying you plan to continue top 100 so that greats but still curious about KH as it's my favorite series of all time!

Honestly beat the sorrow on accident. When I died I hit L2 in confusion and saw the item select. That's when I remembered I had revive pills.

You can cheese Volgin with an LMG, you literally can walk up to his face and unload it, he becomes overwhelmed and cannot deflect your bullets, and you do massive damage to him

CQC is one of the most fun elements of the game, I remember once i perfected it I rarely used any weapons at all, just stealth and CQC
Especially fun once u shot all frogs and got the stealthsuit xD

I killed so many ppl , that during the sorrow fight it crashed my 360 the first 2 times I had it loaded up cuz I kept stunning ppl then knifing them so they wouldn’t get back up

You should do this again, but with tranquilizing all the bosses instead of killing them. It should change everything about how you view them
I love how theres like 5+ major ways to fight each boss. Like Ocelot I used bees and kept pissing him off by shooting his hat. Pain I never left the water. Fear I fed poison frogs. End I had a 3+ hour shoot out with. Fury I cut the suit. etc.
