  • In this Flats Class TH-cam video Captain C.A. Richardson will be giving you a sneak peak of what Mary's Fish Camp has to offer. Mary’s Fish Camp is an old staple on the Gulf Coast that was established in 1946 on the Mud River in Bayport, Florida. The Mud River is fed by 2 natural springs The Mud River Spring and the Salt Spring that flows into the Weeki Wachee River just before the mouth hits the Gulf of Mexico. Mary’s Fish Camp is known for its plentiful fish and especially mullet that run to the springs in front of the camp. Not much has changed at the fish camp since since 1946. Its a piece of old Florida and the beauty of the Gulf Coast! Mary’s Fish Camp closed down in 2010 and had been vacant until Sept 2015. A group of local businessmen and sportsman were presented an opportunity to bring the fish camp back to life. We have pooled our resources to bring back Mary’s for your enjoyment and preserve a piece of history on the Gulf Coast. Come down to Mary’s and bring the family for an RC cola and Moon Pie by the river and see.

Chicken laying mash is what he is talking about. With all of the city folks growing chickens now you can find some. BUT in a pinch get some corn meal for cornbread, white flour and oats. Mix together and add some water. Smoked mullet and grits is so good you will hurt yourself. Smoked Mullet dip made like Tuna dip is awesome. Cook on the half shell with the scales on, the grill.

Growing up spending just about all summer and every summer in Suwanee me and grandparents did this every day when we were not out fishing in the boat and the amount of fried mullet and cornbread ate is something I never forget!!!

Hey Captain C.A. Great video, thanks. I've got a college friend that took me mullet fishing with him and his Granddaddy for the first time around 1990. His Granddaddy had a cousin that had a cabin on the St. John's River south of Jacksonville. We have been going back every year since then, with the exception of a couple of times because of hurricanes and other things. It has now grown into an annual event of anywhere from 6 to 10 renting a spot very close to the original spot that we fished. We usually go anywhere between Oct 15 and Nov 15. The mullet are full of row normally about that time. We use hog and rabbit pellets for chum and fish with little red wigglers on bream buster fishing poles.
The original place got hit with tropical storms over the last 4 or 5 years and the dock was destroyed and they didn't build it back. If I had to choose only 1 fishing trip every year, this would be it.
Thanks again for the video, I enjoyed it.

Very cool place. But I'll pass on the Mullet dinner. When fishing Chaz we usually launch from Bayport Ramp. While scalloping off Chaz this year I decided not to have the wife arrive at the ramp eye bleedingly early like we do so, sure enough, Bayport Ramp was filled up at 10:30am. We doubled back to Mary's Fish Camp and launched there. What a great little place. We enjoyed the scene there and the warf.
Doesn't make Mullet any more palatable, but a fun slice of FL.

I used to catch them on the Cotee river off my dock sometimes - I would throw bread out to chum them and then use a little piece of a cigarette filter on a tiny egg hook. They would mistake the filter for bread.

We used to do this in the 1970s on the St Johns River, but we used a soybean cake from the feed store. I wish I figured out how to use small white plastic baits instead of cut up earthworms, which worked, but were messy. Is the water at Mary's Fish Camp brackish? I later heard that this method only works in brackish water. What do you think?

  • @vahallarising0114

Wow! They were such friendly people to interview. I would hate to go down there and try and tried to do any kind of fishing near or around them. I'm from Gainesville Florida I fished all over the nature Coast and that would scare me. You are wondering what the chicken mesh bait is well I'll tell you it's the human body parts of people like us that try and go down there and mess with them and steal their mullet or overcrowd their stomping grounds. Good video but I think I'll cast net my mullet as always. They were such nice friendly people.

@@flatsclasscharters Chicken mash is a fine feed product that will disperse in the water and keep the fish in the area. Much like fine fish chum used in cast netting bait. Sometimes people reference the "mesh" screen size the mash will pass through. I am a retired chicken farmer.
