    freeport !
I lived there in middle school and highschool !
    A1a, commercial blvd. atlantic blvd.
    Gooood times, beautiful skies.
I just started fishing after getting a rod rig for christmas.
Winter isnt the best time to start. Also, I live in a Nagoya Japan, gotta ride my bike half an hour just to get near brackish waters.
went fishing ten times before i got a fish.
my very first fish was a 40cm mullet on a floater and worm. Guess I got lucky. they dont like to bite, you are right.
but my very first fish was 40 cm ! it was huge !! Im probably spoiled because there is no way my next fish will be 40 cm.
that being said. I know where to get tiny bait crabs and worms for free : ) just a bicycle ride away.
I've caught half a dozen 20cm crabs (leg length.) Crabs are easy. Fish are tricky X_x.

Shoutout from Hawaii .... like your vid... always looking at ways other fishermen are catching mullet ...I’ve been doing it since the ‘60s here... I also go at it at least twice a week and more if I got the time... the mullet fishing here is almost has a cult following.. lol...its interesting u catch it this way.. we use a type of algae or bread mainly but I’ve had caught them with bare hook checking bottom depth on our style of these balanced tailed floats we use...what we have here is stripped mullet.....have u had times using this method and they don’t bite ? We use basically the same method as far as chumming the bottom but with limu (algae) or bread.... I will try the bare hook in your vid but it seems like they are feeding good .When its feeding we bait our hooks it’s great but does it always bite better for u without bating your hook ?

    • @mossyheadbaitcomp.llcgilpr6889
      @mossyheadbaitcomp.llcgilpr6889  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Barry, as always fishing there are variables and those change sometimes hourly when it comes to fishing. In my view the pound test line you use and size of gold hook is one of the most important considerations. We have the striped mullet as well, commonly called a Black mullet locally and they are larger than our :Silver Mullet" I normally start with 6 pound test and a new gold hook, size 6 short shank. If the fish are big I may go up to 8 and ten pound--fluorocarbon only. Yes, there are times when they do not bite but most of that is that are not there according to my bottom machine. I rarely get skunked. I would say and average trip is 20 fish but common to limit out at 50. The fall is best for the big ones heavy with row. I will use white bread kneaded into doe balls at times and do catch fish. But the naked gold hook held perfectly still about 8 inches off the bottom is the best ticket--ask me not why a mullet will take a un-baited hook held perfectly still over a baited hook is and will remain a mystery to me. Good luck fishing

Mossy Head Bait Comp. LLC Gil Price .. tnks fo the reply...yeah.. hook and line choice is very important... I mainly use 8 # floro and a #12 hook that looks very similar to yours... the mullet will range from 1 1/2 to 3 lbs that’s why I opt for the 8lbs test.... tried the gold hooks ... was a very long 3 hours ... don’t think they was interested in anyway... wasn’t bitting either with our reg baits anyways... so I’ll give it a try again when they do.... only chum I found here that u used that sunk was rabbit food... it actually looked good on bottom... prob was bad time to use it.. lol..... oh yeah... our limit here is only ten a day and they gotta be 11-1/2”.....👍🏼

Read through most of the comments. Just goes to show there are numerous ways to catch a mullet with hook and line. From my exerience with a simple gold hook this method works very well most of the time and this is my preferred method. However, being an old snatch rod mulleteer I keep one handy just in case. Sometimes the fish are there and they don't bite very well but swim around trouching the line making you think it's a bite. When that happens I drag out the snatch rod which has two large trevle hooks. When they touch this line I give a mighty jerk. This is actually the preferred method in our area, but the gold hook is becoming more popular as fishermen learn the method.

    • @mossyheadbaitcomp.llcgilpr6889

A fly rod is just one option for this type of mullet fishing. Many people will use a bream rod of 10 or 11 ft. One that has rod eyes. Most good tackle stores have them or you can go on line and find many of them. They are not expensive. If you decide a fly rod then go cheap, medium action rod 10 ft or better. Fly rods are more expensive even the cheap ones so expect about $100 compared to a bream rod which can be under $25. Good luck Fishing

There is a very small water shrimp like creature that sort of looks like a curled gold hook and there is speculation that is whey the mullet will take the hook with no bait.

We fish for them in Sanford Fl. Some of our chum is layer chicken feed, stem rolled oats etc. We tie on 3-4 #6-4-8 hooks and tip them with little pieces of artificial white bass worms. I also use a pre-made Subiki rig made with fish skin that come with 7-8 hooks and I don’t put anything on that one. And last I sometimes use the traditional 2-3 hook on a line like he’s using and put half a red worm on each. Imo the guys snatching with the treble hooks are scaring a lot of fish away. I have caught upwards of 45 a day using my technique.

This givs me an idea. Mullet here will follow a spinner no problem but won't bite. No idea why they do this. It's actually annoying when you see a small mullet folloing your spinner and the big ole seatrout you were hoping to grab comes in and eats the mulled behind your lure instead.
What i have in my tackle box is a tiny spinner that's a replication of a bigger lure I know they will follow. I also know mullet will eat insects and have seen some pulled up on small flys by other people. Maybe if I use the tiny lure next tide they might bite.

I have tried other colors and had some success but nothing seems to work as good as the gold hooks. Light test line is a must when using this technique, anything over 10 pound test seems to put the fish off.
