  • In this video Capt. C.A. is going to talk about why the fish bite better one day and not another! Factors such as weather, wind, water temperatures, and tides are all key factors that could effect the bite, but one that is often overlooked is barometric pressure. Capt. C.A. will go in depth explaining prime barometric pressure to fish in and the effects it could have if it is too high or too low! The fish “feel” better and become more active (look for food) higher in the water column when barometer is low because the pressure on their swim bladder decreases. They move less and go deep when barometer is high because pressure is increased on their swim bladder. Keep it simple folks- no need for college explanations.

Most of the apps measure in Hg. For example 29.97Hg=1014.90 millibar. Just an FYI if that helps. Thanks for all the advice Cap. Keep it coming because I need all the help I can get!

@@flatsclasscharters The National Weather Service has a Pressure Unit Converter that is helpful--plug in the inches of mercury that most applications report (i.e., 29.91) and it converts to millibars (1013)

I have noticed when hunting this rule applies the same way as it does on the water. You can keep the bluebird days, I'll take some wind and drizzle and see a lot more activity.

I find that big daytime snook are especially susceptible to a falling/low barometer. I seem to get more explosive, aggressive topwater blowups on a low or falling barometer...so much so that I broke my PB snook 3 weeks in a row following the pressure trends.

I remember catching kingfish offshore in the fall when fronts were coming but once the front got there the bite shut down. A couple times we caught them Saturday but fronts came in later or overnight and it got rougher plus the fish didn't bite on Sunday. Seems like lots of fish are the same.

Fish bite with falling pressure at the leading edge of a low pressure front. Once the front is there the bite subsides.

Agreed with the video and some of the comments…in Falconry I’ve found the similar rules of nature apply hunting with falcons, hawks and a few eagles.

I have heard the opposite was true on other sites but I know that here in Michigan when the rain and wind move in, the fish musky and pike, get to eating! I shore fish because I don`t have a boat but I have done best with rain and winds and waves throwing big plastic and have caught my biggest fish during low pressure fronts. I drives them in close to shore because those waves wash bait fish and frogs out from the shore line. Crashing waves are no good for the little fish so they are easy pickings in wavy water. Frogs also get washed out into the lake during storms. The big ones know this so they move in for the feast!

29.92 is the “standard datum plane,” it’s the baseline we use in aviation at least.

I am a firm believer in the barometric pressure dropping increasing the bite. I have looked at my photo times of the bass I have caught and, compared them to the pressure and most times I have caught them when the pressure is dropping.

It's the gradient in barometric pressure. Pressure itself is less influential.
