- I've now owned the Teenage Engineering KO II since December 2023 and I have some thoughts. It brings a lot of functionality and a really cool design to the table...is it something worth having?
Thank you for you subscribing and commenting, it helps small TH-cam creators like me feel less morose about all the work we put into videos!

note: korg volca-sample - is a sample player -no inputs for 'sampling', no microphone
same/similar to elektron sample or roland mc-101 >> "sample players"
2 distinct product lines - sample players and samplers.
For “sampling” you use your Vosyr Sampling Manager and than transfer your banks to the Volca Sample. And than you play them. But sure for beginners it is better to start with an Sample Player because you can concentrate on making music 😉
re 64 mb ram
elektron didgitakt - 64mb ram for samples
elektron sample - 64mb ram for samples
yamaha fgdp-50 - 64mb user samples
roland mc-101 64mb user samples
roland mc-707 64 mb user samples
roland tr-8s - 64 mb user samples
roland tr-6s 64 mb user samples
rloand verselab MV-1 - 64mb user samples
the difference is teenage engineering print that on the top panel whereas the others hide it in the spec sheets
I don’t know enough about all these to compare…but I do know about the Digitakt. It has 64mbs per project and 1GB overall…it also uses its memory creatively to get the most out of this storage. The Digitakt also was released over TEN YEARS AGO! A sampler released in 2023 should just have more than 64mb or at least an SD card.
@@HiImNathan digitakt 2 doesn't have an sd card either btw. or the model samples or the korg volca 2 sample
Thank you Nathan for your nice videos about the KO II. I feel the same in most ways. For me this device is a nice playaround on Sunday evenings while my wife and kids are watching a movie. I also tried to implement it in my Band setup. But until now it’s more a fun device for myself! I really like it very much, but that’s it right now…
Great comment, thanks for adding to the conversation! I love that you are using the KO II in this way, I similarly loved bringing it on a plane…light and easy to carry while also being more fun than almost anything else.
Correction for your statement at the 1:48 minute mark: it's actually priced at $299, not $399.
Ugh I can’t believe I got this wrong. 299 is correct everyone!
It's a fun, immediate groovebox. Boom. 😂
Well put! BOOM 4 REALYO
My favorite part of the PDX synth expo was getting hands on the Soma Pulsar-23 and getting to say hi to the folks that work at 4ms
I played the SOMA Pipe for like 15mintues, something I didn’t expect to see there. They make the coolest and weirdest stuff in the room. I have to review the pipe one day it’s insane. I also particularly loved playing the Erica Synths stuff. All in all it was so fun! Once a year is not enough!
Personally I do wish it had about 1 to 2 gigabytes and an SD Card slot. I also use my own samples from field recordings. But it is still a usable device; it is not as usable as the MPC or Sp 404 MK2. While I am a musician with years of experience sampling, I love the size and price. I also love the filters and using it to create samples for a mix within other projects. I won’t be using it for a full set by its self. But to me it’s a great to have device for creating, taking everywhere, thinking out loud.
An SD card slot would be the greatest upgrade to the KOII. I agree though, it’s at its best as a carry everywhere device for having fun.
looks like a fun machine
"who is this for" is a good question with something like this
64mb is a pretty poor design choice, but I've heard enough cool stuff made with it that it's obv not a deal breaker for everyone
I have the elektron samplers so this is the last thing I need but it's still cool to see people use it
I dont think u mentioned it but it has midi and sync i/o and any one of the pads 12×4 can be mapped to a midi channel good with other gear!
I haven’t used it with midi but thanks for letting the people know!
You can just saved the built in samples in the app. Not sure why you would have to reinstall from scratch.
The backup/restore feature did not exist when I made this video, it came online shorty after this upload 😎
... for beginners you recommend the Korg Volca Beats ... but hold up the KV Sampler.
Yep yep Volca Sample is sick and what I meant to say, Beats is highly unsatisfying and not the most useable.
Crazy how I haven’t seen any review say this yet. You could tell someone it is made of legos and they would easily believe you. That’s a good thing for plastic quality imo. It’s a toy and for fun but the buttons are very unique and oddly satisfying to use as a drum pad.
It’s a blast for finger drumming, really good tactile surface AND sounds!
I definitely think 64MB is too little, even after loading double speed samples onto it it fills up when you make a bit more ambient and long sample ideas. Maybe TE just want us to make beats? I don´t buy that that type of restriction makes you more on your toes and creative, sorry :-) 256MB would be perfect IMHO. 64 and no SD card is just a weird decision from TE. Those components are extremely cheap so I don´t see what point they are making. Otherwise it is a great machine...
Yeah my thinking was that by having to continuously upload new samples I’m really in touch with the sounds on there and what samples I want available at a given time. An SD card slot would have been a game changer for the KO II!!!
I cut my teeth on a EPS 16+ back in the 90’s. You could load 3 floppy discs worth of samples onto it. 3 x 1.44mb. Compared to that, 64mb is a luxury 😂. We could have written a whole album easily on 64mb. It’s kinda funny when you think about it. Having said that, messing with the K.O II makes me enjoy my MPC even more.
not features, the storage...it's ridiculous
Koala Sampler is a vastly better idea for getting your feet wet than Volca Sample. And it's on your phone or tablet, nothing more to carry.
And look how many people used the same T-pain vocal FX. No one but insecure other musicians care whether you're using the same punch FX from the KO2. Go to town with whatever you like.
I’m pretty focused on hardware so can’t speak to Koala but I see it pop up in discussions on Reddit frequently. I know working with an IPAD is a workflow that tons of people vibe with. I myself still love and use my Volca Sample and will continue to offer it as an option to people cause it’s just so fun.
Yeah I hear you on the punch in effects. This is just my opinion, but I see them as ear candy-especially when you first get the KOII. After a few months of owning it I basically forgot they were there.
K.O. 2 is $299 not $399
YEPPPPP I SCREWED IT UP $299 MY DAWGS!
