Nice video, I totally dismissed this unit because no other video explained that you can change sequence/section at the end of the bar not mid way through!
Wish I could like this twice!! It's very rare that a "tips and tricks" video doesn't just stick to surface level things, but everything covered here is helpful and not immediately obvious when getting started with this device! This is a must watch if you're getting started with the KO II.
The amount of things you can do with the EP-133 that aren't listed anywhere on the TE site or in the manual is... kind of mind-boggling. I'm really enjoying playing around with mine but was getting frustrated, even as a novice sampler user, by some of the odd limitations. This video has already helped me get more out of it than I was before so thank you!
That's great, glad it was useful. I think the most important thing for me was to go with the obvious workflow and not to try and apply the approach that you follow with other samplers. It's quite an opinionated device!
I swear nothing helps more with TE products than actually reading the whole guide or manual they provide. There’s rarely a feature that’s not mentioned in them, but I’m sure people overlook them all the time. Good on you for actually going through it.
I'm ashamed to admit it, I love reading a good manual. I'm a bit ritualistic in that I generally won't touch the device until I've read it through. Then I make videos telling people what's in the manual! 🤣🤣🤣
I think the "nudge" feature is intended to move a note before or after the the next step in the sequence. Maybe you want a slight delay between your high-hat and snare. This feature allows movement in smaller increments. The demo just shows it being used for a pitch adjustment. It's pretty cool.
Sorry, just to clarify, it's live tempo nudge that I'm referring to. Someone else in the comments told me it's to make small adjustments when you're performing with other audio sources that aren't synced by midi, which makes sense to me.
Useful video. You can also 'solo' multiple groups at once with the FX key which is good for live performance (saves using the fader all the time). Have you noticed that if you have 'Fader' button linked to 'level' it will randomly jump to FX etc. by it's self? There a few bugs but overall I love this device and it will only get better with updates.
@HiSiWi "it will randomly jump to FX etc", I've noticed this behaviour too and I wasn't sure why it was happening. I think it might have happened when I went onto FX and then changed the fader level, which seems to always change the fader to control the FX send, but I haven't tested this yet.
I have noticed same weirdness. Seems like anytime i return back from using the fader to original scene I dont hear the original scene but some kind of alternative. @@mochreach
So very helpful, Mo! Thank you! Well done. The online manual while well arranged and written is quite frustrating and no pdf available..crazy. You did a nice job. I will check for more content.
I had no idea you could convert the sequence change from tic to bar! That was driving me crazy! I could never get the timing right. Thanks for sharing.
cool video i hope when they do the firmware update we get 1. sampling input whilst playing sequence so we can sing or play a guitar in time with the music. 2. resampling to add fx to the sample to bake them in to the sound...such as adding reverb or eq also repitching so 1/2 the sample memory used in a sample.
Great tutorial! Got to play with mine a bit but about to take my first flight with it and am studying this like it’s law! Would love to see an update vid in a few months with more things you’ve learned/workflow solutions
Thanks! I'll definitely follow up with another video. I was also thinking about making a video about my current workflow, not that I'm saying it's the "right" way to do things, but it's working for me at the moment and I'd be interested to hear how other people do things.
Hey Mo! Great video…for the Tempo nudge…this is great for when you aren’t using midi sync with other instruments. You can use tempo nudge to lock to another instrument BPM kinda like when DJ mixing
Cool, that makes sense, although I'm not totally sure if the advantage is over just adjusting the tempo. Saying that, I have no experience in this area at all! Glad you liked the video!
Waiting for my unit and now burning my brain of tutorials to understand how to do things on it, I know that I will spend a lot of months learning this and forgetting about my problems 🤣 but amazing tutorial!!
Wooow, this was so valuable! You actually took away several worries I had! You showed that the device is able to do things of which other videos claimed it couldn't do them!
@mochreach Oh thanks! One would actually be: The melodic samples are recorded in different notes, not all in C, aren't they? And if they are in different pitches, then how do you deal with that to stay in the same scale? Do you first have to determine what pitch it is in and then repitch accordingly? That seems a bit tedious and like it could have been avoided by sampling everything in C
Oh, does that mean once I go into keys mode, a sample that has been recorded in a different pitch is repitched internally and still laid out over the keys grid such that the actual pitch of the note on my selected root note key matches the pitch of that root note? Sorry for the convoluted question
Someone else suggested this in the comments too, and I've actually had to do this to sync up with an external source now, makes much more sense to me now!
That is really helpful, thank you! Do you know if there is a way to change the tic/bar setting for patterns as well? You demonstrated changing scenes at the end of a bar, which is really useful. But when I change patterns within a group (let´s say I have 5 different variations of a beat living in group A), it still does it instantly.
TH-cam has recently decided I'm interested in the EP-133 and would you believe it, it's completely right. Another for the want but don't need pile for me
GREAT VIDEO. Thx for it! Apart from your content: 1. How to double a pattern with notes inside? For example: I started with 1bar and want to have all the notes doubled into 2bar or 4bar... 2. How to reverse a sample?
1. Update to the latest firmware and this is now the default behaviour, I believe. 2. Not sure, I'm sure I've seen the option for it but can't remember where.
Thank you. Your explanations in the video are great, and I actually learned a few tricks that I hadn't discovered yet. One trick I discovered over time is grouping pads so that they can't be played simultaneously. This can be found as a submenu in the sample edit menu. Useful when using, for example, closed and open hi-hats. There's still one thing I'm looking for. Have you found a way to delete an entire project?
That's a good one, thanks for sharing! Yes, you can delete a whole project: hold erase, hold main, then hold the number key corresponding to the project you want to delete. It should say PRJ before DEL.
Great vid! thnx. Have you found anyway to reset all fader effects? I found recently when playing around sometimes I'll forget which ones I've applied and I'll have to go into each one individually and set them back to 0 which is really annoying.
Yes I have, and I was going to put it in the video, but I thought it was getting a bit long! SHIFT + FADER to reset positions for fader assignment on a group, and if you press it again it'll undo. Hold ERASE + FADER to delete fader automation.
🤣 "Horrible intervals" might be a bit strong, any interval can be useful, especially in things like augmented or diminished chords, although you usually want to be intentional about it. When I'm randomly noodling it's helpful to be able to avoid them entirely, although that's a skill issue more than anything 😁
I wish the EP Sample Tool would also be available as an offline version. It's great that you can start it in a browser, but I don't want to have to rely on an internet connection or the website's availability to be able to use it.
I agree, it would be useful. They could make it a progressive web app, in which case you could install it to use offline, but it's not currently, as far as I can see.
Great Content! Does anyone know how to change the volume (loudness) of individual samples within a group. Can't seem to figure that out. Having buckets of fun with this little gem though.
Mo, have you found a way to record the performed FX on the KO. Lots of times using FX+VEL is a perfect bridge or break. It would be nice to capture these on the unit.
Yes, you can record the fader motion, just hold record while moving the fader. Here's the relevant section in the manual: teenage.engineering/guides/ep-133/play-and-record#9.4-fader
This is a great video, thank you. There seems to be a lot of information out there about sending MIDI data, but not so much about receiving it. Do you know if it's possible to different map sounds to different incoming MIDI channels? I couldn't find much in the manual about this.
No, it's much more restricted at the moment, but I'm sure they'll change it in a future update. Currently, if you send midi notes on any channel, it plays the active group, either the samples directly or keys mode if it's active. You can also send midi clock.
Glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching! For specific pads, not that I've found, but you can mute groups by holding the group button, then the fader will control the group volume and you can set it to zero. You can do this with multiple groups at once. You can also solo groups by holding FX and pressing one or more group buttons.
@@mochreach thanks for your quick reply. I know how to fade down the Group volumes but I meant proper Muting (= on and off). So obviously TE unfortunately did not implement this very useful performance feature!
You're right, it does. What I like about the HI setting is that, by default with the pressure I use, it's at full level. In order to make it have more dynamics, I have to be deliberate with it, which works for me.
For example if I press a button and trigger a sample (after adjusting sample to one shot), how do I cut it off without having to hear it all the way out? Thank you. There isn't a stop button to hit twice like on an MPC.
I'm not aware of a super panic style stop all noise, but you could add some release on the envelope of the sample and to make it cut off quicker on trigger release.
Hello, I'm a beginner, I have a question: what is connected to the end of the jack cable? I tried to connect the output of the KO II with a jack cable on line 1 of a focusrite scarlett2i2 to have the KO II on my DAW: but when I use the PAN, it doesn't work, the sound is mono. The problem comes from the focusrite. How do I get the stereo sound of KO II on my DAW?
Hi @MM1M121, hopefully you've solved this already, I just saw it. You need a stereo mini jack to dual mono 1/4" jack cable, then connect both of the mono channels to each input on your Focusrite Scarlett. Make sure you have similar gains for each input. I have a similar audio interface and that's how I've got things set up in this video.
Drives me crazy that there is no way to find home on the Volume knob (top left) on the KO2, do you know of any way to enter a precise volume either by actually having the display SHOW the volume when you turn the knob, or by punching in a volume???
My live Audio input is only coming through on the left side for some reason. It wasn't at first but now suddenly only left. While rest of sounds are fine. Is it just my guitar? Anyone happen to know why this is happening? I can't seem to find a solution.
I've not come across this, but it could be something to do with the sample mode, you can use the + and - buttons to change from left right and centre when sample mode is on: teenage.engineering/guides/ep-133/functions#10.1-sample
I am pleasantly surprised that they used the Apollo Lunar Lander user interface with cryptic codes for this innovative product. Who doesn't want to train for three years on the code table to use their sampler? ;-)
@@drewdoctor1984 You got me there. There is no worst user interface in this world. Whenever you think you have seen it all somebody comes up with something even more atrocious.
If you have it set to BAR, the scene change happens at the end of the bar. If you have it set to TIC, the scene change happens on the next tick, which is pretty much instant. Are you experiencing different behaviour?
@@sergejooris705If you were absolutely desperate to make this happen, you can copy every single pattern into one long one, bar after bar. You get 99 bars, so it’s likely doable, but tedious.
Sorry to hear that. 😕 Mine worked out the box, I'm sure it would still be fun, but I'd get it replaced if I were you, it wouldn't be the same with out it.
Make sure play is off, press SOUND, select the sample you want to delete (it should show the sample number on the display) and then hold ERASE and SOUND. It should flash SND and then the sample at that position in the sample bank will be deleted. Be careful though, as it will be totally gone, so back it up with the sample utility first, if you want to use it in the future.
Is there a way to treat/convert a stereo sample as a mono sample, so it only takes up 1 of the 12 voices instead of 2? Or would this require resampling, which is not available?
Yes, that would be great! As an alternative, I was thinking about getting the Zoom H1n recorder, so I can use it to "resample" (with an extra step in between) and also to record the songs, as the K.O. II can't be used as an audio interface.
None of the shit you say matters cause your audio is so low you can’t be heard with the phone and stereo turned all the way up. Invest in a compressor plug in!
🤣 I'd love to say that I did it on purpose to weed out all the people who aren't dedicated enough, but I can't hear it I'm afraid! I've been listening to too much loud music probably. I'm still working on my recording setup, I'll take some of the top end off next time.

Anyone happen to know why this is happening? I can't seem to find a solution.
I've not come across this, but it could be something to do with the sample mode, you can use the + and - buttons to change from left right and centre when sample mode is on: teenage.engineering/guides/ep-133/functions#10.1-sample
Amazing video! Thank you! More tutorials please! No tips too stupid!
I am pleasantly surprised that they used the Apollo Lunar Lander user interface with cryptic codes for this innovative product. Who doesn't want to train for three years on the code table to use their sampler? ;-)
I know you're being sarcastic, but that's exactly the kind of thing I'm into! 🤣 You can use the menu if you want to though, so all bases are covered.
@@mochreach I know you can and you are going to feel like an astronaut while doing it. Just make sure you don't crash into the Moon! :-)
It’s better than ensoniq mirage hex code os…..lol
@@drewdoctor1984 You got me there. There is no worst user interface in this world. Whenever you think you have seen it all somebody comes up with something even more atrocious.
section 4 just opened up this device so much more for me lmao
It's a really nice feature, it makes playing a melodic sample live so much more fun!
Do you know if it’s possible to use the sample tool on an iPad?
Webmidi is weird on iOS. Try searching for webmidi browser on the app store, I think there's an app that will allow you to use the site.
changing scene ( 3 ) doesn't quite work as you say, i'm confused.
If you have it set to BAR, the scene change happens at the end of the bar. If you have it set to TIC, the scene change happens on the next tick, which is pretty much instant. Are you experiencing different behaviour?
I think I got it, took me sometime to process what you've said in the video. thank you, looking forward to more videos.
I also know you are the one who'll connect EP-133 to OP-Z first and make them friends! 😎
I haven't connected it to my OP-Z yet, but I have a few ideas!
do you know how to make it so that pressing play plays from the beginning of the song instead of at the last bar?
Have you tried SHIFT + Play? I can't test just now, but I thought that worked.
I tried that too but does not work. Is there a known way to play all patterns automatically ?@@mochreach
@@sergejooris705If you were absolutely desperate to make this happen, you can copy every single pattern into one long one, bar after bar. You get 99 bars, so it’s likely doable, but tedious.
What button are you hitting to "enter ", or confirm?
The "enter" button at the bottom of the numpad for selecting things in the menu.
Im pretty sure my fader is unresponsive, is the thing still fun without it??
Sorry to hear that. 😕 Mine worked out the box, I'm sure it would still be fun, but I'd get it replaced if I were you, it wouldn't be the same with out it.
How do you erase a sample?
Make sure play is off, press SOUND, select the sample you want to delete (it should show the sample number on the display) and then hold ERASE and SOUND. It should flash SND and then the sample at that position in the sample bank will be deleted. Be careful though, as it will be totally gone, so back it up with the sample utility first, if you want to use it in the future.
How you turn off lock mode.?
I do it by turning the EP-133 off and on again. Not sure if there's another way.
@@mochreach Hi.!
Thanks a lot master…!
😅
Is there a way to treat/convert a stereo sample as a mono sample, so it only takes up 1 of the 12 voices instead of 2? Or would this require resampling, which is not available?
Not as far as I can tell, you'd need to resample. I really hope they add resampling from the loop buffer in an update.
Yes, that would be great! As an alternative, I was thinking about getting the Zoom H1n recorder, so I can use it to "resample" (with an extra step in between) and also to record the songs, as the K.O. II can't be used as an audio interface.

🤣
Your typing too fast to see
None of the shit you say matters cause your audio is so low you can’t be heard with the phone and stereo turned all the way up. Invest in a compressor plug in!
You have a way with words, @DavidMiller-do9gg. Thanks you for the suggestion, I'll check the compressor settings for the next video.
Reading instructions? That’s blasphemy!
🤣
Everytime there is an s sound in your video my ears bleed. Still great video
🤣 I'd love to say that I did it on purpose to weed out all the people who aren't dedicated enough, but I can't hear it I'm afraid! I've been listening to too much loud music probably. I'm still working on my recording setup, I'll take some of the top end off next time.
Where is the manual so I can learn this Swedish crap
On the teenage engineering website, there's a link in the video description.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
