The UN-Turned Bowl - Wood Turning

- An unknown shrub root becomes an un-turned, natural edge bowl. I used a glue block for the first time, ever, as it was the only way I could find to hold this odd shaped piece. Nature abounds in this beautiful turning!

Thanks so much, Patricia! 😊
Watched in the middle of the night but couldn't sign in. You did magic again Phil! Certainly agree with Andy Phillip's comment.
Thanks for watching, Vaughn, I'm glad you like this!
Such beautiful possibilities that you find in those odd shaped places! Oh my!
😊
What a difference start to finish, you knocked it out the park 👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much, Douglas!
As Always Beautiful Work Phil
Thank you, Jeff! Cheers!
So incredibly beautiful. Great job, Phil 😁
Thank you so much, Samantha! 😊
Success! Nice use of the glue block. ♥️😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I was thinking of you the whole time, Valerie!
Phil Anderson - Shady Acres Woodshop And hoping it would hold, too, I bet!
Phil you kept me on the edge on this video but on that note another favorite love it
It was a weird one, Bobby! Thank you! 😀
It's astonishingly beautiful piece! I'm glad that no person was harmed or dismembered in the making of this bowl.
Haha, me too, Bonita! 😊
Phil you are absolutely amazing with what would appear to be a junk piece of wood, and then turn it into something so beautiful!!!!!👍👍👍
Wow, thank you, Jack! This one was fun!
Phil, you have such unique pieces! Can not wait to watch this video later at leisure.
I hope you enjoy the video, Vaughn, thank you!
Another great piece Phil love it👍
Glad you enjoyed it 😄
It's too gorgeous for words!
And yet, you let me know what you think and I appreciate that, Houston. Thank you!
Well,,,,,,,,,,,,There was an old turner who lived in a shoe, turned so many bowls he didn't know what to do, He became so famous across the whole land, posted videos of his work which we all thought was grand. All this nonsense is because at certain angles it does look like an old leather boot. Fabulous work Phil. You honestly deserve a medal for the brave way you attempt such projects. The use of the clamp was inspiring including the hot glue to keep it in place. From gnarly and snarly to Objet d'art. Wonderful.
Wow, such prose on this Tuesday, Alan! I enjoyed all of it, too! Thank you for taking your time to watch and for your great comment! 😊
Absolutely stunning
Thank you so much, Donald!
It's Beautiful Phil... I Love It!
I'm so glad, Steve, thank you!
Fantastic! I really like this style! 💚 A green heart for the natural, and always a 👍 for you.
Thank you very much, Carsten! 😄
I am amazed you pulled that off!
Me too, Steven! LOL! Thank you!
Now you have all my respect for turning this. It is a true work of art! I hoped you would do something like this at previous intervals, now you did not disappoint! Thank you.
😊
Love, love, love it! Nature at its best ( until the next one comes along!)
Absolutely! Just let that nature show through, Beatrice!
You do the most amazing work with the oddest pieces of wood! Gosh! What a wonder!
What an encouraging example!
Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment, Linda! 😊
Hi Phil,
That is just WOW! Beautiful!!
Regards
Lars
Glad you like it, Lars, thank you!
I DO love it....really cool piece....
😊
Phil you are not afraid to take on a challenge I'll tell and it looks pretty cool that tape was something else! I never thought that would hold on but you proved me wrong!
Thanks great video and stay safe my friend!
Thank you, Larry, I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
That's really cool beautiful
Thank you, Raymond, I'm glad you like it!
Phil, I'm convinced peoplle send you wood to try to find something you can't turn. What they don't realize is that they are giving wood to a great turner not just a good turner. I find pieces similar in character much more fulfilling than a basic round bowl. Great job.
I'm so glad you like the odd stuff like this, Gerald! After a few of these, it's sooo difficult to turn something just "normal." Thank you so much!
Very cool bowl 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼. You are a artist woodturning
Thank you very much, Tomas!
Great job another example of your ability to think out of the box to a wonderful result.
Thank you very much, Victor! 😊
It is cool and we all love it. Use it as a base for a flower vase.
Thank you, Khan! Cheers!
I definitely love it Phil. Stay safe and thanks for sharing. Regards Jules, Droitwich, England
Thank you, Julian, will do!
Love it, very unusual and different!
Glad you like it, Rich, thank you very much!
Phil a very strange bowl but very interesting and awesome, yes give any piece of wood to the master of rough turning pieces. Fantastic.
Thank you for your kind comment, Kobie!
I saw a nice piece of firewood for the barbecue, yet you again turned it into art😁
No such thing as firewood if you have a lathe, Johan! 😊
That turned out to be a beautiful piece. Had me a little worried while you were turning it but I’m glad you preserved. 😊
Thank you, Rosie! Cheers! 😊
Hi Phil i just love your thinking out loud about what you can do with this piece, it gives me more encouragement to study a piece before turning thank you for another excellent tutorial video Jim.
Wonderful! I'm so glad you are willing to give something like this a try, Jim! As long as you can work out a way to hold it, you're good to go. Thank you!
Wow, that is gorgeous man!! Way to go!! Great 'process'!!
Thanks a bunch, Larry!
Very nice!
Cool, thank you! 😊
What a beauty Phil, nature's form at it's best. Nice work mounting and method, stay safe
Thank you, John! Staying home, keeping safe, you too, my friend!
Phil
Another beautiful bowl Mr Anderson, you are certainly braver than I with that clamp flying around! You picked the perfect finish, I love it, so au naturel.
Thank you very much! 😊
thats a good one for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!
😊
Very cool ❤️
Thanks for spending some of your time with me, Maud! 😊
Obviously you were up for the challenge... Yes I do love it...
Thank you, David!
Love it, your so good at this. I would call it a sweet potato bowl, good job Phil.
I like that, Charlie!
That was a little intense Phil! But its a nice piece, brave soul, lol! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it, Doug, thank you!
Unique and unusual wooden art piece, the finished article looks tactile always surprising, so glad I found your channel.
No one is more glad you found me than me, Lewis! Thank you for stopping by! 😊
Very creatively done with beautiful results! I love the chainsaw marks and amazing color. You take the most challenging pieces and make them heirlooms.
Thank you, Susanne! 😊
I do love it.
I'm so glad, Tammy, thank you! 😊
I share your love of bark and gnarly root balls.... love seeing new techniques and I learn something from each of your videos... thanks Phil, you are like a super hero with out a cape... but then wearing your cape while turning word probably be a bad idea... so you may actually have one... maybe... or not...
Haha, great, funny comment, Jack, thank you! 😊
Yes indeed I do love it, Jesus you are brave to attempt such a project but the end result ...... a very unique one of a kind little gem. Well done keep the great videos coming I genuinely love them thank you. 👍👌👍👌👍👌 many thumbs up as always.
Glad you enjoyed it, Jan! Thank you!
Very COOL
😊
Ang galing nman ng pagkakagawa mo phil napaka creative mo hanga talaga ako sayo. God bless phil.
Salamat, pinahahalagahan ko ang iyong komento, Carlos! 😊
Salamat phil isa ako sa taga suporta mo good luck kaibigan. 🤗🤗🤗
I do love it!!
Yea for me, Janice! LOL! Thank you, I'm so glad!
Thank You Phil (thank you Dave Calmwood Creations) Quite the contemplative piece Phil. ..Well my gosh Dave, I thought I gave Phil the tough stuff. You have taken it to a new level. GREAT!!!!!! Keeps Phil on his toes. Keeps Phil YOUNG!!..Like seeing your wood working skills. Nice, interesting, attractive, unusual bowl Phil, TM
Hadn't actually figured even Super Phil could do anything with what I was going to toss into the fireplace 🔥 and Mrs D said (this, I swear, is true!), "Send it to Phil. He might be able to figure out something, right?"..... Well, right? 😏 😉 😁 Oh, yeah!
Thank you, Tuffy! Unusual may be the description of the day for this one! HA!
Phil
You're an inspiration Phil . And a God-send for those of us having to isolate away from our lathes like me . All I can do is rough out blanks and watch you and others enjoying yourselves ! Stay safe and keep keeping us entertained. 👍
Wow, thanks, Jim! Yeah, I think we would all like our freedom of movement back anytime now, Jim. I feel fortunate to have my shop to keep my mine occupied.
Always another wonderful job. I did notice on this video that your video is much sharper and the details are much crisper, good camera you have
Thank you very much, Dave! It is a good camera even if it is old. I got it from Craigslist. Literally owned by a little ol' lady. I think it's about 10 years old, doesn't have a lot of fancy bling like the newer cameras but it gets the job done rather well.
Well I was miffed to what this one was going to turn out like but I think it looks beautiful and a job well done great job Phil
I'm so glad you watched and like this, Daemon, thank you!
You really rock it. Thanks for sharing your tallent. Sebas from Argentina
Thank you, Sebastian! Cheers!
I forgot to leave a comment Phil, better late than never I guess.
Do I love it ? Oh yes I most certainly do. You never disappoint 👏👏👏👏.
All the best from the U.K.
Thank you, Geof! I hope all is well with you and yours.
Phil
Yes, that's beautiful, Phil. you are the king of gnarly wood - no doubt about it. Stay safe and stay home. Bill
Thank you, Bill! Staying home, keeping safe.
What an epic adventure! And it’s beautiful.
Haha, thank you so much, Mary!
Just watched this video. I'm trying to caught up with your work. Your a wild man when it comes to turning some strange a crazy stuff. Again THANKS for the inspiration. I love your channel. Keep the videos coming please.
Will do, Scott, if the power ever comes back on! LOL!
You are right "You know I love it". Okay so who finally sends Phil something he can't or won't try to turn? Tuffy I think you must be next, Dave didn't make it this round. I keep wondering is this the one? Nope not this time. What a challenge for the rest of us. great job Phil.
That's the idea, Tim. I want everyone digging through their firewood pile. Who know's what's in there? Thank you, I'm glad you love it!
Phil
Wow phil thats nice mate lovely you have more guts than me to turn something like that but as I always say your my number one wood turner who i love to watch and that was just great how you did it and made it thumbs up all the time 👍
Glad you enjoyed it, Kirk! The more I have to stay home the more my mind wanders to the un-turnable. Thank you for your great comment, much appreciated!
Phil
Yes / you’re correct “ I love it”
Thank you very much Richard! 😊
Wow, Phil
Is that a good Wow or a bad Wow, Garth? LOL!
Root beer barrels wood fit in that pretty good.
😃
Absolutely a beautiful piece of art. Very skilled and scared enough to treat each piece with safety concerns. ❤️
Thank you, Maddie! I'm glad you can see the mitigation process and understand it!
Phil
Phil, I do believe this piece has been your most trying piece to turn. What about it? It was an interesting video to watch you spin your magic. I think it is one of the most interesting pieces you have turned. It took all your talents and you didn’t even break sweat. It’s surely a keeper in my opinion. Thanks and stay safe!
Nope, not this one, Kid, but I understand what you're saying. This took a little creativity but nothing compares to the Cracks, Cracks and More Cracks Manzanita bowl I turned. Whew, I don't think I'll ever get over that one! I'm glad you find this piece interesting, me too! Staying home and keeping safe, Kid, you do the same, buddy!
Phil
Wow that's awesome piece out of a root would have never thought of that Great Job Phil
Thank you so much, Rich!
That's amazing Phil! I wouldn't have thought about the band clamp ! Just a thought for you next time use a zip tie they come in all sizes and might be a little bit safer again what a gorgeous piece Phil!!!👍
I did think about a zip tie, Jon. I didn't think I could get it tight enough is the only reason I went with the hose clamp. Thanks, I'm glad you like it! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I have some I use on heavy equipment 3/4 wide you can get them pretty tight with vice grips!
Gee, I got to be the 1000th like.
I hardly ever look at that info, Bruce. I'm impressed any of my videos have that many likes! I'm glad you hit the milestone!
Its really beautiful, not sure what to put in it but its luvly.
Cool, thank you, Sangye! 😊
You "ball parked" that one, Phil. Well done!
Thank you very much, Bryan!
This is an amazing piece.
Thank you so much, James!
The raw wood with the band around it looked like...sweet potato bondage? Amazing piece at the end.
Haha, OK, Nan! Thanks, I'm glad you like it! 😊
Way to "give 'er a go" Phil. Looked great. That looks an awful lot like an old ninebark, I could be wrong but...Give it a google and see what you think. You might have to do a little scrolling to find a picture of the actual bark.
I did take a look and you're right, Jim, it sure resembles ninebark. 😊
That is one cool bowl Phil it is so unique and beautiful, I love pieces like this.
Thank you very much, Maria! Me too!
Thanks Dave! 🙄😉, you Phil are one brave turner!! That feed and wax really made the piece come alive, personally I liked the gloss look before you buffed it off, but to each their own. Nice job Phil most people would have just looked at it and said....Nope 👍
Thank you, Jonathon! The feed and wax only looks shiny when wet. As soon as it dries it has just a slight sheen to it. I use it because it feels so good on the wood and seems to preserve the really dried out pieces.
Great work Phil .. I think I may have given that the resin treatment but you showed you dont have to ..👍
Thank you, Andy!
Phil
Phil, I only chucked that into the box because I knew that I don't have anywhere like enough experience to have a clue what to do with it other than the burn pile. All the while, I knew there was beauty within the beast, but you could have chucked it to the burn pile and no one would have cared. But, no! You just had to go and show me what I'd turned down. Thanks. 😎
Oh, by the way ... We both 🎉😍 *LOVE* 💖💞 how that turned out! Thank you for treating our old shrub's root so well! So nice!
Thanks to you, Dave, I no longer have a burn pile. I have found that anything can be turned. I will admit to picking some up and putting them down, scratching my head but sooner or later, we get it turned!
Thank you, buddy, I'm glad you two like it! Me too!
Phil
Hi Phil Think Gord Rock got it right, I don't think this Black Country Lad would have even contemplated turning this. Not sure Dave From Charnwood is not trying to test you, but you did it. Nice piece thanks for sharing. Tony
It's Calmwood Creations. Minor point.
Oh, I think we are beginning to understand that Dave guy, Tony! LOL! Thank you!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 🙄🤔😏😉
@@DAsh-wi1zc my heartfelt apologies know what its like to have ones name misrepresented. No offence intended. Bye the Bye don't think the last piece of wood you sent Phil was Calmwood it got him in a bit of a tizzy. LOL Regards Tony
At last you listened to me and have turned a Slipper Bath I have had loads of fun in them things
You are still at it, Steven!
Brave but well done cracking finish, frit me to death when i see that pipe clip on there, just the very reason why we like watching, really never know what we going to see.
Thank you very much, Gary! 😊
I am always amazed how you can take a piece of ugly looking wood, that most people would send to the burn pile and turn it into a piece of beauty. This is amazing!
Thank you so much, Douglas! I'm really glad you like it!
Wow, very beautiful and well worth the effort! I was worried about the clamp, like the other viewers, but consoled myself by thinking that you wouldn't have posted the video if the clamp had hurt you...and then remembered you often show your mistakes so we can learn. Anyway, we weren't there, and you were, so you could make an accurate estimation of the risk. That's a really beautiful piece of work. Salute!
Thank you very much, Andrew, for your great comment! I feel you understand my thought process very well.
Phil
That looks like Youpon, here in the part of Texas where I live, that stuff grows wild every where. The roots look like a bunch of balls glued together hap-hazardly.
Thanks for the interesting info, Paul!
Amazing! I do love it. I have a similar root that I've been avoiding for some tome - I may have to try it!
Go for it, Garry! You never know until you try! Thank you!
Phil I'm thinking you might be just a little bit bullheaded as my Dad used to say. Get an idea in your head and think of everything and anything to make it work. Guess how I know that. Anyone that knows me knows better than to say . You can't do that. I'm so glad that you are because look what you created. I just LOVE🥰😍🤩 it. You ROCK.
Haha, yeah, I guess I might be a little stubborn, Glenda. I just hate to waste wood! Everything has a little something to offer. Thank you for your fun and delightful comment! 😊
Dale, dhwoodworking, that piece looks like the lower section just above root ball of a pryvite
Bush
Could be! 😊
Well phil i was really interested in how you was going to tackle this piece, in my opinion you did a fantastic job, i love it, top job mate 👍
Glad you enjoyed it, Peter, thank you so much!
Phil, one safety comment, the band clamp should have been reversed so that the clamp tail is trailing otherwise there is a possibility that you could get sliced and diced. Stay safe from SW WA.
Thanks for the tip, Pat!
. It's great piece of work and you did a great job It would make a good talking point. Conversation stalls bring out the bowl. I can't make my mind up about it Do I like I don't know
Conversation starter for sure, Norma! It's an odd one! 😊
Hi Phil, I agree with you, I love it!!!. Have you upset Dave as he seems to be sending you pieces that could hurt you. LOL. An ingenious way of holding it all together as well. Brilliant work. Take care Phil. Cheers, Huw
Thank you, Huw! Yeah, somebody needs to get a hold on that Dave, guy! LOL!
Phil
I Do love it, but so FAR from what I would ever attempt. Great learning video. Who would ever think to use a large hose clamp to hold a piece together.... respect!
Thank you, Loren, I'm glad you took your time to watch and comment, much appreciated! 😊
Love lt
I'm so glad, Ernest, thank you!
So cool! I absolutely love it! Such an inspiration! I'm so grateful that I find your channel! Oh, and I think what you have there might be crepe myrtle. I've drooled over some of the gnarly bases of ones growing here in GA.
Thank you so much! 😊 You may be right, it came from Oregon and they have a lot of Myrtle there.
What did you do to remove the sticky residue after pulling off the tape? This project turned out fantastic, in my opinion.
This tape hardly leaves any residue, Rich. If it does, denatured alcohol dissolves it. I'm glad you like this, thank you! 😊
HI Phil. WOrds escape me on this one. Great job of "saving" the piece. I wood like to know where you get the tape. I cant seem to find it around here. catch you next week.
Look for double-sided turner's tape. It's available in different widths and is very easy to use. Surprisingly well, as Phil just showed us.
Hi Ron , Woodcraft of Parkersburg WV has it in 1 & 2" .#1525 Good stuff , I've used it a lot . Phil turns some crazy stuff , but always turns out just right .
Thank you, Ron! I thought I got the tape at Craft Supplies but I just looked and they don't seem to have it anymore. I've had it for about five years. It's pretty strong stuff.
Just wondering……are there many projects that don’t make it to TH-cam? Just saying……if it were me there would be a plethora!!!!!
If I'm turning I'm recording. I wish I had time for more but, just not possible! I post everything I turn, including failures. Fortunately, not many of those anymore. 😄
Reminds me of ginger root...but prettier
Good call, I agree!
