You know Phil, when it comes to turning odd shaped wood you are both fearless and a visionary! You are not afraid to turn things others would run from! You also see things others can not! Beautiful piece! Take care and stay safe!
I took a pause as 2:15 in the video to express my immense gratitude and joy for the way you hold, respect, explore and share each piece before the turning begins. Some days I feel like I'm a freak, in love with nature, bugs, dirt, stumps, and the like... then you remind me that it's a gift!
Wow, what a great bowl, Phil, you really turned the little beast into a beauty! Absolutely love it! I admire your patience of letting a piece of wood show its own special character… I always feel like you are having like a silent conversation with it as you turn until you come to an agreement on what it wants to be… Very beautiful, great job as always, Phil, well done 👍🏻👏🏻 You take care, I am happy to see you back and enjoying yourself out in the workshop 😊 Thank you for another great video, Phil 🙏🏻
what do i see? i see something that was a piece of a good time on the beach. maybe some food being cooked over that fire, a few friends, some laughs, and memories. then, the fire went out, the wood washed away with the tide, and it found its way to Phil. and he brought it all back to life. wow. ive seen some really pretty traditional bowls, vases, and boxes. but this piece takes a discarded, forgotten, tossed-away chunk of wood, and really brings something beautiful for us to enjoy. thank you.❤
Well Phil, at the risk of repeating myself, you have a unique ability to bring the absolute best out of a piece of wood most people would not give it any thought as they threw on the fire. This ability that you instinctively bring to each wood turning that you do shows what an Artistic inner vision you have &, as a former Senior Master of Art, very few people have this vision when they look at a piece of wood like this. It is a stunning, unique piece pf Artwork produced by a man with enormous vision & yes, the bear & the bull were very clear. Brilliant grain & finish too my friend. Stay safe & stay well. Look forward to your next video, Don from South Aust.
Absolutely beautiful piece! Your work is so inspirational and stunning. I would have never looked at a piece of driftwood and thought for a second it could be turned! Thank you so much sir for sharing your skill and inspiration and glad to see you with a gouge in your hand. Stay well my friend.
When it was turning on the block of wood I finally could see the bull. Saw the bear almost instantly. And this is one of the prettiest things I've seen you do yet.
Phil, I think whoever gets it, is getting a Prize. I live in SoCal and boy howdy is it dry in our State. For a while the fires were down here, it got so bad that they were calling the San Fernando Valley (where I live) The Ring of Fire. Some places burned twice in the same year. A friend of mine almost had to Boogie, then 6 or 7 days later I drove into the Valley & looked up & the other side (friends area) was on fire again. TG she was ok. The next year I had 2 friends lose their homes, and another had some yard damage & a lot of smoke damage inside the house. I'll tell ya, it's really scary to be surrounded by fires. NorCal sure got more than their share. Yikes. I was looking online for housing. I almost took a job in Chico. The areas I was really lookin' at was Paradise. Of course it burned to the ground. Sure glad I decided against the job. 😱🤯 Ok, to the bowl... Yes that certainly is an interesting piece of wood. (I find interesting stuff too.) What made you decide to turn it? When you were working on the back I saw color starting to show up. It really got my attention. On my end it looked like it had pinkish and grayish streaks running through the brown. It was really unusual. I think it came out very nicely. Ok...shapes/faces....When you first held it up and pointed out the 'burnt' end it was horizontal. From the side it looked like an alligator. When you were talking about the poor bull who left his right horn eviscerating the Toreador's kidney. But had you been looking at it from our angle, straight on, you would have seen a dog. For the top portion, the second you started to lift it up I saw a squirrel. However while you were working on it what came to me was how great it would be for a mantel clock. I think it could be very cool.
Phil, you astound me at your unique ability to see such beauty in the pieces of wood most of us would burn. This piece is exceptional. Your woodturning artistry is definitely on the rise. I saw the fish, too. Thanks!
Outstanding piece, Phil! I don't know what more to say than the usual. I love the look and the finish and the many levels of interest contained in it. You chose the perfect bowl size for it and I could see the bear before you even said it. However, I couldn't see the bull but I definitely thought I saw a few sea creatures in there. Great work and thanks for a solid video.
Phil, just wanted to tell you how much i enjoy your videos. Iam a newer woodturner and have learned so much from watching your amazing skills as well as your very creative imagination. Please keep the videos coming!!
Phil, I had a piece of drift wood I found and was going to turn it. That on your piece the left hand looked a lot like a dog. That is what I see in yours. I did a little more whittling in the front of mine to reveal a dogs face and turned out the middle into a bowl. It was really quite unusale, but that is my nature!!! It will never match the piece you turned it, It was a professional job. Let this be a lesson, look it over good ,you just might see a GOLDEN GOOSE!! What you are going to turn, may not be what it ended up to be. I turned out quite unique, it looked so good to me, I think Its going to be a keeper.!!!!. ❤ KEEP ON TURNING
Thank you, Howard! 😊 I think most of us do this for fun. Your hand carved driftwood bowl sounds like a winner! As long as you had fun making it, it's a success!
It turned out fantastic. Burnt, wormhole branches, etc. The more the better. I love these curly ones and roots of course, you've probably seen that by now. As usual 👍 Carsten
Not sure whether I have watched this one before or not but it turned out stunning and just as soon as you turned up the bear jumps out real love this piece great job Phil
The drift wood bowl also looked like the profile of a dog’s head when you first started working on it. It still might be there when someone turned it around and the grain and finish is beautiful.
Love the Bull and the Bear piece Phil. I have been collecting drift wood from my Lake Whiskeytown. Way to hot here in Redding for turning Cant wait to cool down a little so I can get back into my woodshop Thank you again Darrell
Hi Phil. I found your channel about a month ago and have been watching your videos. You are great. I got a mini lathe this year for my 55 birthday. I always wanted to work on a lathe since shop in middle school when I got to use one. It’s been such a joy to turn wood. Your videos have taught me so much from different finishing techniques to different ways to use my gouges. I also have learned about planning projects, and how to do different things (like a mushroom shaped container and making a bowl with the bark on the edge). Thank you so much for being a wonderful teacher.
Thanks Phil. Beautiful. With driftwood I like to imagine what it was and how far it has come to land on a beach. All wood deserves a second life! As for critters at 20.03 definitely the head of a cow. Regards Kim

Once again beautiful. I think the wood color and grain reminds me of Alder.
😂
How gracious of that driftwood to patiently wait until you were ready to bring out its inner beauty. Awesome!
I know!! LOL! Thanks, Mark! 😊

I see the bear but I don’t see the bull, I see a seal with an abnormality instead. Love your work Phil. Another great piece. Thanks. Sheryl
Thank you, Sheryl! 😊 Cheers!
“I’m gonna turn until…it looks like something else.” That did something to my brain, I can’t explain what.
😂
@Eh... Ya, I caught that as well. I got a chuckle out of that. I guess I relate to it. Eh, Phil. 😁

So about that wish for your rain to go south on the 17th. Gee thanks I started pouring down here and the ditch in front of our place was about to flood. I almost got the drift boat out and went for short ride, Would have been very short because there is a culvert about a 100 feet down from us.
This was one of your coolest turnings I have watched. That wood sure seem hard and dense. Nothing like what I got down here in Oregon.
Take care buddy!
Gary
Haha, thanks for the giggles, Gary! 69° and sunny today! Supposed to get close to 90° over the weekend. Then you'll hear me complaining about the heat! LOL!
It is 76 hear as I speak...well type. A very light breeze blowing the leaves in our Maple and Elm tree. Time for a Mai Tai. Maybe after I cook dinner I best not burn the chicken.
But boy this weather is sure better than a few weeks ago!
