Mesquite Crotch - Wood Turning

  • I learned a few things while turning my first piece of Mesquite. The bark on that one really gave me a hard time. With my new technique, this piece was a breeze! I also try out a different finish than my first one at the recommendation of one of my viewers. That didn't work out as well but it was good to try, anyway.

Phil, I've made a few "nice" funnels but if it doesn't look to bad I color up some epoxy and finish the bottom like that and sometimes it looks like I planned it that way. One old time furniture maker told me that one sign of a good craftsman was knowing how to repair your mistakes without it being noticeable. It's fun trying anyway.

Hallo from an old (in age) turner from South Africa. Ideas: I always stabilize my bark with thin CA glue before my final cut - being careful not to let it penetrate the wood itself on the endgrain. Works well for me. If you want a darker colour, first apply a thin coat of BOILED linseed oil. Follow (if you want) with a coat of shellac and then the polish. I suppose it is carrying coals to Newcastle, but nevertheless I love to share ideas. Nice bowl btw. Regards.

Phil, I turn mesquite all of the time because we have an abundant supply here in Texas. When the wood is greenish the finish will be light but over time it will darken. If you want a piece to be dark just leave your wood out in the weather for about two years and let it get old and dry. It's a little dustier when turning but has a really nice darker finish. Just my 2 cents.
