    Phil i sit here in Sydney Australia till nearly midnight watching your videos.. You are such an awesome turner and I talk to you as I watch .. Shady Acres Workshop is my favorite channel you inspire me to try new things .. You have such a modest demeaner and I don't think you realize just how good you are my friend .. Cheers from Glenn P.S. We are in our 3rd week of lockdown from this bloody Covid virus...

    Saw a similar piece of laminated plywood turned by another TH-camr. Had to be solid lumber core plywood, as there wew no voids and nice grain patterns to finished project. He began by sanding two opposite corners flat, measuring the midpoint of each side of each flat and then drawing lines from each midpoint to opposite corner of flattened triangle. The three lines crossed in the center, and he didn't have to worry about losing friction.to locare the center of the base, remove the small stub and construct it geometrically. Swing a compass from opposite sides with legs set greater than radius. Draw a line through the two intersections of the arcs and your center lies on that line. Do it again and intersection of the two straight lines is your center.

    That's a cool idea, a couple times from my prospective here on the sofa, I had to blink my brain to make sure I saw what I was seeing. I thought the grain would give you more trouble. Good example of knowing what your tools can do for you, like a surgeon. Good job Dr. Phil.

    What a great project, as always your gouge work is brilliant Phil. I have some white oak (reclaimed from a neighbours 60 year old workbench that was falling apart), I may have to give it a go.
    Just an idea, as you didn't have anything in your tail stock when you cut the tenon, you could have used a long boring drill to put a small hole through the tail and give you a centre point.

    This is the only video I have ever watched that had me on the edge like the time I caught a 37lb Flathead catfish on an ultralight rod with 6lb test while standing on a powerplant discharge. In other words my heart was racing from all the variables that could of just ruined this piece in the blink of an eye. I also had White oak piece blow up on me. This was educational and exciting. Thank you.

      @@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I am very familiar with terror. You know those types that are blessed with good luck? I'm the polar opposite of that. I had my legs crushed in a industrial accident and have been disabled since I was 33 and I am 48 now. I spend a lot of time with my lathe. I like art forms that are unforgiving and difficult. I do Scrimshaw, draw with ink, wood carving, antler carving, stone carving and really enjoy my lathe. I enjoyed tattooing for 9 years but it's a very ugly work environment and just feel better making bowls. I like projects that take deep concentration because it stops my PTSD in it's tracks. Your video really is an adventure. I'm happy it worked out for you.

Sure, it may well have been your first attempt at a 'Tri Corner Bowl but I would have been prepared to put a heavy wager on it being an outstanding result such is the skill & mastery of your craft over a long time. That turned out great very unique piece!!! Looks like red oak and if it gets wet it will turn black in that wet spot exactly why I'm not sure I've seen it in red oak that I've brought for my cabinet shop and you can't get it out it's like an oxidization thing especially if iron fillings get on it !

    Hi Phil,
    Outstanding job and a beautiful bowl!
    We have a lot of Red Oak in CT and I found that if it's not dries carefully it WILL crack.
    I made a small 3" lidded box last year.I set it on my bench to dry out and about 3 days later I heard a pop.I went to the bench but didn't see that anything had fallen so I just quit looking.About a week later I checked the box and found that it didn't only crack,,,it separated down one side about 1/8" and eventually it opened up to almost 1/4"!!! I keep it as reminder on how to deal with green Oak!
    Thanks for the video,,,
    Tom

    A really elegant design. Looks simple yet fairly complicated to do. I watched Mike Waldt's first, the design challenged me & then you popped up. Nearly failed at the first hurdle, though, and that was getting the centre point out of the live centre! So this will be the next project but one. Interesting to see your earlier work/earlier vids. It's like anything that challenges you you'll do. Good on ya, buddy, stuff the comfort zone.

    Just finished watching this video. Love it❤. Makes me want to give it a try. Like that you included the finishing at the bench. What are your thoughts on burning in your signature. You may have covered this in a video I have not gotten to yet so forgive me or this might make a good topic for a video. Oh well one other question in dealing with the tear out in this oak would a scraper be an alternative to consider. That’s a lot of comment from me don’t know if it’s because I am doing more turning now and have developed questions or just that I am real ignorant in general. Any way really like this piece and plan to try one in red cedar.may be a mistake to use such a soft wood. I still would like to send you some wood to play with if you don’t have tooooo much already. Need to find a way to get a mailing address without hackers and spammers spoiling things. If you can point me in the right direction I will try again. Dan

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      I just scrolled up to see if you watched the other one of these and I see you did. They are a lot of fun. Quite a challenge but fun nonetheless. You can see by the second video that there really is no need to be so precise, just have fun with it. I don't love using scrapers and for me, it doesn't seem to be wood type that is the problem. More so, it's the particular piece of wood you are dealing with at the moment. Sometimes scrapers work great, other times they do more damage (tearout) then they are worth. I try to shear scrape with my gouge and that works pretty well most of the time. I don't burn my signature but many folks do. I just find a pen easy to use.
      As far as reaching me, there is only one way and that is to get my email address from my About tab: www.youtube.com/@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop/about It won't work from a phone unless you request the full site URL. A PC works great. I wish TH-cam would fix that. Thanks for watching, Dan! 😊

    I have not tried this project yet, but back early on, when you marked on the bed of the lathe with masking tape lining up the points for the correct placement, would it be possible to make another tape reference for the other set of points closer to the tailstock? Then using a parting tool, cut the wood on a line going between the tape marks into two bowls rather than just one doubling your bowls. You would have to locate centers on one side where it was cut off.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, that wouldn't work, Lee. The outside of the bowl, the part below the three points, is where the other three points used to be. If you separated into two bowl, you would only have points, with nothing below them. I do like the way you think, though! Get every little bit out of each piece of wood. I'm like that, too! Thank you for your comment!

      I don’t have a lathe, just thinking regular bowl should easier to turn and won’t need as much material, and then just need to divide the circle into 3, and put on the bandsaw with desired angle.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xyz9250 It would have to be a compound angle and it would be a son of a gun to try to hold a round bowl to make those cuts.

      @@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop that’s true. probably need a jig to hold the bowl, but the cut should straight among the three corners, just like they were from different planes of a cube.

      I only have a mini for now but thinking about selling my Harley to get a full sized one with atleast 2hp. I have been riding for 33 years and building my own bikes for 20 years and never had a bigger passion than my bikes until l started turning that's how much I love it ! Do you think jet is a good brand? That's who made my mini. Thanks again much respect. .....John

      To be honest, John, I used to think Jet was crap. They actually started out in my hometown of Tacoma, WA. Of course everything was imported and that didn't sit well with a lot of us. But, I will say they have come a looong way and now I think Jet is as good or better than most any other large tool. My lathe is, of course, a Jet and I just could not be happier.

      If you are thinking of selling your Harley for a new lathe, I think it's safe to say you have the bug. I can't blame you. There are sooo many things around here I should be doing but I just don't seem to be able to get away from turning! I suppose it's the instant gratification but whatever it is, I ain't gonna be quitting anytime soon and it sounds like you are in the same boat. Good luck with your choice of lathe, I know you'll make the right decision, John!

    When you part off the point to make the tenon, leave a small second nub that is measured with your calipers to fit into the live center with the point removed. When you reverse it to part off the tenon, the nub slides into the live center and.... there you go. Should be pretty close.

  • @scottpeterson5913
    @scottpeterson5913 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hey Phil!
    Next tri corner bowl, cut your tenon first on the top. That way you can flip it and turn the bottom, I leave the tail stock up till almost done. Then you can mark the center of the bottom tenon for future reference.

    Hi Phil, I watched your video and Gary’s (ThePapa1947) and decided I’d like to make one. I wasn’t sure I could hold the work in the lathe as you did and I was correct. So I removed the corners so I had flat surfaces for the drive and live centres. It worked out well and I now have a tri-corner bowl about 115mm corner to corner and 70mm high. I started with a piece of mahogany 93x93x94mm.

    I haven't read the comments, and you may have already figured it out, but i am not concerned about the edges, whether uneven from glue-up or from tear-out bc i use my lathe-mounted disc sander to sand the edges, rather than hand sand as you have suggested. It works fine for me so you may want to give it a try.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I suppose I could use my stationary belt sander to do that. Either method would not get rid of the major tear-out I had until I finally got a clean cut with the gouge, though.
