Ah yes, billboards. The modern mans novel, they tell you everything you need to get by in today's consumer-driven world: where to eat, where to drink, who to call when you break the law, and of course, which Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game Beach Party Role Play events to go to. At least, that must have been how Rain Nightclub must have seen it. This Final Fantasy XIV free company went viral in the community earlier this year for it's out-of-the-box advertising strategy, wherein they rented multiple real-life billboards in order to advertise their in-game event. This quickly blew up in their face, as it turns out a number of the assets used in the billboard violated the game's material usage rights, including the fact that they used official game assets and logos on a REAL LIFE BILLBOARD. The community was torn over whether this was hilarious or about to result in a crack down from Final Fantasy 14's publisher, Square Enix, and most importantly, would the beach party still go ahead? All of these questions and more answered in today's video. - เกม

As someone who knows people who do roleplay in FFXIV, even the horniest members of the RP scene were baffled at this. It was truly a beautiful moment in how stupid a community can get.

Idk, I've heard first hand accounts from trucker friends that go hard af. On one occasion, two truckers were arrested for having a shootout over a prostitute dispute. They seem like a wild bunch.
I highly, highly doubt that. Lot's of debauchery goes on at Truck stops.
I don't know, there was a pretty good Sprite billboard near where I lived.
The title was "Drinking Sprite will make you hot*"
The picture was a bunch of young adult men and women in next to nothing playing in the water.

@@rare9242 You don't need to rent a billboard to figure out that the $10,000 was pulled out of someone's bum. Even large billboards in I think it was Texas cost only $6,000 for an entire month and the advertisement was only meant to stay up a few days and it was kind of in the middle of nowhere so it was likely even cheaper than that. The FFXIV community decided to act like children as usual over something that wasn't a big deal. The event was held and was fine and the only bad thing that happened was the FFXIV showed it's GCBTW again by spreading tons of false rumours and harassing the entire FC along with anyone they percieved to be involved with the FC.
As someone who actually FREQUENTLY roleplays in FFXIV, the billboard sent the entire rp and mod community on FIRE. You literally couldnt go ANYWHERE in the RP scene and not see discussion of the Billboard.
Though I can honestly assure you, yhis is probably the most /public/ debacles the community has seen. Theres been just as crazy situations throughout the games history that might be worth discussing in more vids in the future.

It was so bad that on Twitter a shit ton of people locked their accounts out of fear of being discovered and banned.
I only learned about this happening because of the confusion about not being able to go to my personal house. Turns out when I was on Balmung, my personal house was in the same ward as this event, so I had issues going to my house due to the district being full for a week before it even happened.
I had that happen in real life once lol, there was an R18 festival on my street and I had to convince the cops that I was A: over 18 and B: lived there

I appreciate you pointing out the misinformation that was so prevalent when this was going on. In addition to faking moderator meltdowns, some were taking the opportunity to harass unrelated people by screenshotting old tweets and passing them off as members/staff of rain night club. It was a wild few days.
Unfortunately there’s always some people who take silly internet drama seriously and think that makes it ok to harass anyone they perceive to be involved. Legit the goofiest, funniest story the games ever had and people couldn’t just sit back and laugh

FFXIV events are some of the most cursed events I've seen. Only in a game like that can you attend an in-game wedding between a catgirl and a gnome while in the pews you have people decked out in either knight armor or bikinis crying as if it's a real wedding, doing funny Hildebrand dances, and RPing sucking fat glizzies beneath the seats.
The image this evoked for me had me reeling. Thank you.

As a FF14 player, all I have to say about this entire thing is 'Of course it was Balmung'
Witnessing this happen in real time was surreal. A few days before the event actually happened people arrived to the FC house in DROVES, mounting up and shooting bombs at the house in a cloud of destructive smoke. Lalafells playing dead on the grill. Hordes of dogs barking in unison. Sketchy drug deals behind the house featuring Shrek himself. Amazing.

Fun fact! For as many people who disavowed the billboard and the event, Rain Nightclub is still in business, and DJ Yams and DJ Potate both still get booked at DJs at other venues.
How the hell does someone DJ in the game? Do they open a twitch stream and just blast music in the background via their laptop?

At the end of the day the billboard was a huge success imo

The sort of reminded me there was a weird Kingdom Hearts billboard in this little town I visit from time to time. It had the main hero (I don’t know his name; I don’t play Kingdom Hearts) standing to the right and all it said was “Kindness is key” or something like that. I should’ve taken a picture of it before Oklahoma’s winds tore it to shreds after a few storms.

Legality aside, that billboard fiasco was one of the funniest things I've seen in the FF community
Wasn't the funniest thing shutting down the servers?
The biggest thing that everyone gets wrong about this is that it wasn't actually illegal. It was against the TOS, yes, but nothing done was literally illegal. Unless SE could somehow prove copyright infringement on the assets that were mined then converted into mods by directly linking the billboard's owner, creator of the image, AND person who released the mod (but released for free), which would have been extremely difficult to begin with, and likely only practical to file a cease and desist to whomever that player was. There is nothing illegal about making a billboard to advertise a non-profit event (this was a non-commercial advertisement, the cost of the billboard has nothing to do with it, no money was being gained through the event directly), and just because something is against a game's TOS doesn't mean it's also illegal. Even if this much cringe *should* be illegal, sadly they did nothing wrong in the eyes of a court. There is even already a legal precedent set for this by a previous case where a Washington DC court ruled that if nothing illegal is done then cases involving broken TOS would be dismissed. As said in the video, the only practical solution would be a somewhat dubious cease and desist to the billboard renter instead.
The reason in more detail is because of the number of barriers SE would have to hop to actually get to anyone involved in this: To take any action at all they have to factually prove who was even responsible directly, not just "this FC as a whole" (imagine taking an FC to court, lol). No one that created the sign released, datamined, extracted, shared, etc, the copywritten assets (assuming they just downloaded them from a mod sharing site like everyone else), the characters pictured on the sign don't necessarily belong to the people who bought the sign or made the image in the first place, without admission of the person who actually created the image or bought the billboard there is no way to tangibly link it to anyone within the FC either, since anyone can create an ad for anything they want generally speaking. If everyone in the FC decided to play dumb on it then there is nothing SE could even do to retaliate, aside from actions on player accounts (which would have to be blanket to everyone in the FC, which would be what a PR team would refer to as "a big fucking mistake"). SE could contact the company that rented the sign to the player, but a US company being contacted by a Japanese legal team without any kind of existing legal case and asking for them to release confidential customer information would likely result in a "fuck off", so it is very unlikely they would *ever* be able to discover which specific players actually rented the billboard. Even if a specific person openly claims to have rented the billboard, if they decide to change their mind when they see legal issues coming and suddenly "didn't really rent it", the onus of proof would be back on SE to figure it out which would be incredibly unlikely to ever prove beyond a doubt.
Yes, the billboard was extremely cringe. Yes, it could have resulted in another SE ear-twisting about third party tools and mods. Yes, it was against the TOS in a variety of ways. But, actually illegal? Maybe in clown world or in XIV Twitter's dreams. Do you know what IS actually illegal, though? Cyberbullying and online harassment, which also happens to be XIV Twitter's favorite reaction to anything like this. This billboard managed to bring out some of the ugliest parts of the XIV community, which did result in some suspensions and bans towards the harassers. It's okay to think this kind of thing is cringe or even make fun of it among friends, but going after people for doing something stupid is never okay and I hope some day the XIV community can grow up and learn to let people look stupid on their own instead of laying down and rolling around in the shit with them instead. Anyways, this cringe reddit post is over.

It's hilarious how crazy things got over something so hideous.
It took me over an hour to get to Crystal Balmung and almost another hour to get to Mist. It was worth it though so much fun and DJs Yam and Potate killed it. I remember so much controversy in the community about the billboards but in hindsight nothing happened irl (no legal repercussions) and in-game as far as I remember. It all amounted to nothing. lol

I remember gathering outside this house with everyone for over a week. All the shitposters, meme accounts, doors locked with 5 'Pools closed' characters out front. Hank hill and DR Eggman were there. players making the NPC main cast for the game. Everyone hopping in tank/magitek armor to bombard the building. This was somehow the funniest public gathering I've every had the pleasure of being part of in this game. If any of you legends from shitposting at this event ever read this? Thank you. I find it hilarious how people pay hundreds of thousands of gil for ERP within the non-serious RP servers/communities, when you could just put in the effort to make a halfway-decent lore-compliant character, and then RP with the serious crowd on Balmung (not Quicksand) or Mateus and maybe get ERP that way. For FREE lmfao.
I hope Final Fantasy doesn't become known to normies as some weird sexual game, its my favorite series and while the fandom could always be a bit cringe at times this is too much.

I live about an hour's drive away from Missouri City, TX. In fact I lived there as a child in the late 80s and early 90s. It's more or less an extension of Houston. It's a nice place to live. That background at about 5:00 is a place called "The Township." I used to eat at a restaurant there with my family. My mother's side of the family still all live there. I'm amazed I'm just hearing about this billboard now.

So number 14 is actually the 58th game? That certainly checks out with game naming conventions, especially japanese ones.
In fairness with Final Fantasy each number is a new setting, they just tend to create tons of spin-offs and those spin-offs have sequels and so on. Take arguably the most popular FF game in the franchise, Final Fantasy 7. You've got the original, you've got the Crisis Core prequel, you've got the Dirge of Cerberus spin-off, you've got the remake, you've got the Crisis Core remake, you've got Before Crisis, etc. Same with other entries. You've got the Dissidia Final Fantasy series which is separate from the main series and has sequels of it's own and so on and so on.

I was the Bouncer there for the Rain Nightclub venue, I was the only bouncer there lol I did a Mount Off and Minion rock paper and scissors event using minions. It was a blast but I left due to IRL work now getting busy but still a fun venue and staff to be with.
The organisers behind this..'event' were crazy. Like that one who actually ended up getting banned and then immediately started saying they were gonna kill themself if SE didn't undo it.
Everyone knows Square Enix only enforces their ToS on raiders trying to see how much damage they do.

Around the time this event was happening, I was hosting a Glam contest for my FC on Sarg; many a joke was made about renting out billboards for the event. Thing is, I completely forgot about this until I saw the video thumbnail; I got a brain blast back to this last summer

this reminds me of a story back from some time around the 2020 lock down when I first started playing, an even had started and I wanted to get one of the mounts my only issue was I could only access one of the dungeons that gave you the currency for the mounts which had long que times as is and I was playing a DPS character
now naïve little me is running around the servers most populated city waiting for the que to run out and looking through LFG when I see a post from someone playing a support character offering to do anything for 10k in game currency with one of those weird "~" things at the end which I now know is usually a sign of not so family friendly activities online
I join the LFG and not only is their character as close to nude as you can get a character every message they send ends with one of those "~" and in retrospective a little flirty so I being the naïve 14 year old I was at the time innocently ask if they would do really anything they confirm so I just ask if they can run said dungeon with me a few times at which point they seem mildly confused but agree
I ended up getting the mount and not having to pay either XD

Putting up a billboard was a genius idea, the execution was just not well thought out at all xD But that party was literally impossible to get into -- since the billboard went viral, the housing district instance was basically full the entire time. Took me over an hour to get in myself xD

If I left, i could not go back in because of queues. My ward wasn't even related to their and it was bogged down. it was absurd.
