    My only disappointment about the Horse Armor discussion is that it didn't include when Bethesda increased the price of the DLC as a joke for April 1st, and then never brought it back down.

    • @backlogbuddies
      @backlogbuddies 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +256

      They brought it down on Steam, and at Gamestop. However, Microsoft and Sony wouldn't let them drop it for PSN.
      I forget which dev announced this issue before, but they messed up when pricing a map pack. This resulted in the Xbox version being priced higher than the PSN. Microsoft refused to drop it and Sony forced them to increase the PSN price because there must be parity.

    I remember the horse armor fiasco.
    I think it's worth mentioning that we'd enjoyed a decades worth of internet freebies by 2006, where going to their website (a relatively rare thing to have in the 90s) you could get downloadable freebies. Wallpapers, cursor packs, etc. It wasn't all that uncommon for the official website of a PC game to have dozens if not hundreds of small freebies the devs (or mods) had made to download as a free add-on for the game. The Horse Armor was exactly that kind of "freebie" that you might expect if you visited the Elder Scrolls IV website, not something to actually pay money for. This was definitely the turning point, though. I remember everyone hating the Horse Armor, we all laughed at how stupid it was, but most of my friends ended up buying it. They were fans of the game and it was literally less than $5 so why not?

    • @DickDickstein

      @@Altoryu They indoctrinated an entire generation of kids, and ignorant adults into thinking that micro-transactions are how things work. Games, movies, music, Super Chats, Patreon, Twitch, streaming services, Amazon, FREE RAM, and just about all paywalled content from just about anywhere.
      "Pay with just a click!" to save your/parent's bank info automatically propaganda making it sound convenient, which is another addiction society now has. Convenience trumps everything. No matter how petty, just a "taste" of annoyance will convince most to just go along with it no matter how many of their own rights, or freedoms they have to sacrifice. Of course it also traps kids, who are by nature far more spontaneous, and unable to think actions through to a more sensible conclusion because they want things NOW.
      It's way easier to convince a gullible kid to buy 50 Fortnite skins for $1.99 each to get some social clout online than to sell them another $60 game, and make them think nothing of it. Kids are much more susceptible to emotional manipulation too, which a fair amount of the independent creators tend to prey upon, and social clout does as well when they make things like "skins" important to that game's culture. Anytime something in a game is "new", and other friends have it already, kids are just suckers for keeping up with their peers. "Limited" as well...marketing language manipulation isn't just for marketing anymore though. It's for the news to attack the gamers when we don't go along with paying corporations our last dime.
      Almost every tech, or media platform has implemented some sort of micro-transaction system. So they have a credit card number already to use on all of them, with zero concept of the value of money because it isn't theirs. This has moved into Super chat kind of stuff, Patreon, etc. Certainly, giving money to "creators" is a better thing, and worthwhile, but that is still another huge scam by places like YT raking in such a high percentage to literally do nothing like Valve does.

      That's not really a good idea.
      Firstly, if modders put something out for free at first, they can't then change it afterwards. Even if they do, people will then share the pirated files or use the old version. There's also the issue that the modder won't be paid for the duration of the free mod's work and life which is pretty unfair.
      Secondly, having a discussion with the community is pointless because the community will always say "Keep it free". We have examples of mod makers putting thousands of hours into making a free mod that gets 200,000 downloads but only 2 donations

    • @kezia8027
      @kezia8027 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +66

      The very nature of capitalism means that isn't possible. These companies don't just want *some* of the money, they want *all* of the money. Microtransactions, by their nature, are required to be predatory.
      Microtransactions only exist if they work, if they work poorly, they get 'optimized' until they work 'as desired' - Sure there may be a dev here or a company there that only charges 0.99c for their 20 hour expansion, but there too will also, ALWAYS be those who will charge $9.99 for a reskinned character model.
      Once the $9.99 seller makes enough money, they can then make this the norm because they can afford to buy out the majority of their smaller competition (who are smaller because they don't have the money from selling garbage for gold) and then you end up with 3/4 companies who are all in an equilibrium trying to charge as much as possible while delivering as little as possible.
      By its very nature, if it costs money, then it will have an incentive to make as much money as possible, and to make as much money as possible, you have to disregard the source of that money.

      I know what I’m gonna get with BGS games and don’t care about their problems like bugs because I grew up on games like Fallout new Vegas on PS3 (worst version ever of any game) yet that is still my favorite game of all time.

      @ivansmirnoff6987 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @thomasrial4444 Fallout 76 was a monumentally worse situation than CP2077. Not only did the marketing lie, not only did it release before covid meaning that didn't hinder its development, not only did it launch in a nearly unplayable state, not only was it a multiplayer game with numerous exploits, the entire game and merchandise was actually a scam. In classic Bugthesda fashion, it's still a bug filled mess years after release, but now it's a bug filled mess packed to bursting with microtransactions and a pay to win subscription.
      2077 is still a little rough around the edges, but at least CDPR has actually worked on the bugs without relying entirely on free work from modders, and the PL 2.0 update might turn it into the game that was advertised and perhaps even more. Also, personal opinion but the story and characters are far better than anything Todd has put out. Keep in mind, New Vegas, objectively the best Fallout game post Bethesda, wasn't even made by Bethesda, but by Obsidian and much of the team that created the series.
      Of course, I'll never hold it against anyone for treating CDPR with a lot of skepticism from now on, but to proclaim that CDPR should never be trusted again while mindlessly ignoring the fucking mountains of problems that Shithesda continually builds upon with release after rerelease is a level of doublethink that should mark someone for being a risk to themselves and others. The fact that Bethesda remains one of the more loved devs when they're arguably one of the worst is insane to me. I may keep an eye on Starfield and its modding scene, but I got so burnt out on Fallout 4 and having to spend more time modding it into a game I actually wanted to play.

    Yes you can look at the comments and stuff, but for people to inform others they would already need to have spend the money.

The ball has always been in the players court to demand more innovation, better content and less bullshit that that favors game companies and game companies only but time and time again people simple eat up whatever is shat in front of them. Be it from ignorance or lack of perspective theres semingly nothing that will turn the tide in the consumers favor here and it feels insane to me to see it happen every year with another controversy passing by as people either forget it ever happened or they are pacified by a "fix" that manages to make the thing they bought more usable.

    The whole paid modding fiasco was such a big deal for me because Bethesda literally posted a statement apologizing, and then merely two years later did it again. It just made me feel like they didn’t actually give a shit and would monetize mods no matter what, even if it meant they had to lie directly to their own community.
    Also iirc a lot of those that were against paid modding just weren’t okay with how Beth and Valve handled it. Suddenly there were dozens of low effort $2 mods that should’ve been free, updates to existing mods were locked behind paywalls (wet and cold did this iirc), and overall it just turned the community on its head.
    Many of us wanted modders to be compensated, but this clearly just wasn’t the way to do it. And CC is overpriced garbage so that wasn’t a solution either.

      If you expect any kind of market impact due to your concept of "morality" you're going to be continuously disappointed and tired. People buy stuff they like and enjoy, the "vote with your wallet" spiel is a myth and always has been. Their "scams" will have monetary consequences when they stop providing things people want, you can get frustrated that people want things you think dont hit an quality bar for what "they deserve" but all they deserve is what they knowingly pay for.
      We have a cynical economic system, if you approach with anything other than cynicism you're going to be perpetually confused and outraged for no good reason. I do not find gaming tiring because I exclusively pay for stuff I know im gonna like or at least will only dislike because of taste. Totally ignore any idea of "industry health" or "the state of gaming" and immediately all discussion about "WAOW! [corporation] prioritized profit over user enjoyment???" immediately becomes as meaningless to you as it rightfully should be. Under the circumstance a corporation tries to scam you regarding something you want, simply steal it, problem solved 100% of the time.

    I don't know how well known it is, but there was an issue with Fallout 4 on the PS4 dubbed "0KB glitch", which was essentially a bug that occurred related to mod use which caused save corruption and inability to save, as whenever you tried to save it would say you needed to make 0KB space. It was a game breaking bug, and at the time (not sure if they ever fixed it) Bethesda chose to sweep the issue under the rug and many people were unable to play the game, until people discovered the fix for themselves.
    Know it's nothing new, a lot of Bethesda's games have bugs that never get fixed and rely on modders to do Bethesda's job for them, but for a bug that broke the game and people not knowing how to fix it for months / years is a whole new level

    Some modelers will fully render out characters for practice, even if it never gets seen. Ellen Page got upset when people pulled the camera away from one of those PS3 storytelling games and realized her model while showering, while not shown in the cutscene, the model itself was anatomically correct... Not surprising it happened in Oblivion, I'm guessing one of their character modelers wanted the extra practice or whatnot, while the other/others didn't.

You could just blow through the tutorial/first few levels, but then you'd miss things like the Dark Brotherhood quest. (Not to mention they'd need to have a playable version of the game before even getting it rated)

      Well they have to rate like 5000 games per year with not that many employees. So they need to rely on the information they are given. Playing Wii Sports for 15 minutes probably tells you everything you need about the game but if there is a side quest in a 50+ hour RPG there is no way they will ever see it without it being pointed out.
