    Uri Geller is a fascinating individual, one of those rare humans who is so unabashedly unique that you can't help but look on in awe. The spoon-bending psychic is famous for many things, mostly his love of bending spoons, but he is also famous for suing Nintendo over everybody's favorite Pokémon: Kadabra, known in Japan as Yungerer. This spoon-bending psychic Pokémon is a clear homage to Uri, but where Nintendo saw an homage, Uri saw a stolen identity, and fittingly demanded $100m in damages to his image. This sparked a 20 year long legal battle that saw Nintendo strike Kadabra from the TCG and Anime. This is just the tip of the iceberg however, as Uri's life is a fascinating series of events, real or otherwise. Join me, as we delve into the life of the legend, and see just how deep this Kadabra-shaped rabbit hole goes.

    The thing that made Uri Geller so infamous in the first place was that he claimed that his "psychic powers" were real. Most magicians are open about the fact that it's just a performance, and Geller's lies and unethical behavior gave magicians a bad name. Johnny Carson and James Randi were both stage magicians in their youth, so they were angered by Geller and knew what kinds of tricks he would use.

    There are two interesting things I’d like to add to this story: first, part of Uri’s initial hatred of Kadabra was that he believed that the symbols on Kadabra’s body were Nazi imagery (they’re not, they’re based on the symbols on Zener cards, which are used to test psychic powers).
    Second is that Nintendo’s lawyers initially claimed that Kadabra wasn’t named after him. They actually claimed that no Pokemon were named after real people, which was a blatant lie.

    • @sammyshot3
      @sammyshot3 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      Yeah, and the Nazi imagery is even more important because he is the child of two holocaust survivors, so I understand why he would be upset when he saw something on the pokemon named after him and with a similar gimmick that looked like SS bolts (and if you look at them, the shape is closer to SS Bolts than the Zener card symbols, probably due to them trying to simplify the complex shape of the Zener card)

    The reason Kadabra was still in the games is because until gen 8, every pokemon technically was and it would have fundamentally altered how the Abra line works to just remove Kadabra. That said, from gen 5 onwards, Kadabra can’t be caught in the wild unlike similar pokemon.

    For anyone curious about the spoon bending. I’ve always heard they use gallium spoons, or at least some sort of alloy with a really low melting point. The melting point is right between room temp and body temp so he doesn’t even have to bend the spoon it’ll just fall apart in his hands either way. On one hand maybe Nintendo deserves a taste of their own medicine but this is still so absurd

    • @starwarsnerd100
      @starwarsnerd100 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Another common method is just repeatedly bending the spoons back and forth ahead of time before the show, so that some slight pressure is all that's needed to rebend them.

    • @jamesflames6987
      @jamesflames6987 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @Uryvichk ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Penn & Teller also discuss this in one of their magic books. You can just rub the contact point between the spoon and handle on a standard cheap metal spoon and the friction and heat will make it surprisingly easy to bend. If you combine that with pre-bending you can do it quite easily. I used to do it for fun sometimes in school cafeterias.

    Uri returned to Israel from abroad in the late 90s after running his reputation to the ground like you explained. He had a short stint hosting a show not dissimilar to Penn and Teller Fool Us, where he was mocked relentlessly by the media and critics. When Israel's SNL equivalent made fun of him he threw a hissy fit, but quickly stopped after realizing he basically Streisand'd himself.
    Other known Israeli mentalists like Lior Suchard and Hezi Din have allegedly long distanced themselves from him. Today he appears to live a sheltered but quiet life, often making dumbass statements and publicity stunts to an audience of ironic spectators in an attempt to stay relevant. The Israeli media sits back and pretends he does not exist.
    He's no villain, he's just alone and desperately wants fame. Quite sad really.

    One interesting factoid involving Kadabra in the video games is how he is pretty much forced to evolve into Alakazam upon trading. Giving Kadabra an Everstone as a held item, and trading him off to a friend or some dipshit in bumfuck Missouri, will result in Kadabra still evolving (even though the Everstone is supposed to stop a Pokemon from evolving when held).
    This setup does NOT hold true for any other trade-evolution contemporary lines, such as Haunter into Gengar (fuck you Mindy), Machoke into Machamp, or Graveler into Golem; said middle evolutions will not evolve with the Everstone item held.
    Some people say that this is merely a glitch, and in some ways that might hold water, but if it is a glitch, me thinks it's an intentional one...

    Kadabra was actually impacted in the games as well. They never outright removed it, but they got pretty close. I can't remember the last time you could just catch a wild kadabra. Plus, kadabra will evolve when you trade it to someone else. Usually you can press the B button to stop Pokémon from evolving, or give it an Everstone to hold to prevent it from evolving all together, but kadabra seems to be immune to these. No matter what, you are unable to trade a kadabra, because it will evolve into Alakazam whether you want it to or not.
    I used to trade out kadabra on Wondertrade in gen6 holding Everstones. I always hoped someone would notice that their new Alakazam was holding an Everstone and get super confused about it

    maybe there's some kind of legalese work around Pokémon worked out with Gellar, where they'd keep Kadabra out of the anime and card games but not the video game somehow. Maybe he thought cards and show were more easily spread than the games or something weird like that.

    the possible explanation is the presence of Kadabra and the Twisted Spoon item only exist "deep" within the games, as in they aren't present in any marketing materials that can be seen outside of putting considerable time into the game and can even be missed entirely, as such could be argued that the image isn't being financially exploited
    I'm curious if anyone's gone through every trailer and advertisement ever to see if either show up

Thank you for making a whole video on the greatest pokemon of all time and I'm so happy it finally got more content at last. You made my whole f'king week for this, you're the best good sir and Mr. Conman Yuri!
    Editor's Note: This man had a 3 story opening foyer balcony in his lavish household, the story goes by his own words his young son fell from the top and hit his head face first on the ground. Not only did this fool rush over and not take him to the hospital but instead pulled out one of those salt crystals because in his own belief 'Crystals have magical curing properties' So he rubbed this against his bleeding head and put him to bed. And no I completely disagree Abra, Alakhazam and yes even Kadabra are all vital to Pokemon history! He is the cornerstone of all Pokemon!!!

    The Abra line wasn't in Sword and Shield on release, either., it was patched in when the first DLC dropped. Abra's line is fairly popular, so it could get added back in by a DLC compatibility patch again, but it'd be funnier if it didn't, considering the timing.

    My guess why Kadabra was mainly locked out of TCG and Anime while existing in the games might be since Uri probably only talked about the pokemons use in cards (one important thing to note is that Pokemon makes 6-8 times MORE money off of merch compared to the games) as a result it would actually make more sense for Uri to go after Kadabra in these sections since ironically Kadabra would’ve made the company more money in the merch then it ever would in the games. I have a feeling Uri probably pushed just for TCG since we’ve seen another Pokémon getting removed outside of the games…Porygon. Funfact Porygon, Porygon 2, and Porygon Z has been locked out of the anime ever since the seizure controversy. Despite this Porygon has had been in the games, gotten a new evolution in Gen 4, and has appeared atleast once ever new generation in the TCG. It’s probably the same logic where the section where the Pokémon caused the most amount of trouble locks that Pokémon out while it can be used in the other sections so they don’t have to deal with heavy amounts of censorship

    • @klg9549
      @klg9549 ปีที่แล้ว

      And the funny thing is, it was Pikachu using Thundershock in the Porygon episode that caused the flashing colours (sorry if you already knew this)! But I heard that recently they brought Porygon back to the anime ... or maybe that wasn't true and just clickbait. Anime also always have that "please watch in a well-lit room and not too close to the screen" (paraphrasing here) message at the start, ever since.

    • @Tylerr_Creative
      @Tylerr_Creative ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@klg9549 No worries I know some people don't know about it. Personally I don't remember seeing Porygon and its evos in the anime outside of small cameos. Like technically they have reappeared but not as a main role or in a position where it actually got a VA its mostly minor stuff.
