@@AkuraTheAwesome the weirdest thing is both SE and Grubhub blamed each other. SE blamed Grubhub for not requesting codes on demand to fulfill all orders as they were allowed to do as part of the contract. Grubhub argued that SE made it clear it was supposed to be 'limited edition' thus restricting the amount of codes.
My guess people who were running Grub Hub marketing and in charge of codes were syphoning off the pizza codes to sell on ebay for big dollars...at the same time telling their customers to go shove it and only let go a certain amount of codes to fulfil contract.
As others and myself have pointed out SE should have just released it as a global compensation for poor mismanagement on Grubhub. The other feeling is...there's probably a contract that prevents that....I mean SE gave away nearly 2 months of free subscription due to all the Endwalker issues, giving a emote to all accounts would be simple enough unless there's legal blocking such a thing from happening.

The Absolute Virtue nonsense was especially bad because it feels like it goes against the design of the game up to that point. One of FF11's best features is how varied some builds can be thanks to gear bonuses and sub job choices. Player experimentation ended up fostering up new playstyles for jobs (most prominent being the Ninja tank) and the devs seemed to catch wind of stuff like this and add gear or abilities to complement these new play styles.
Absolute Virtue was just like NO YOU HAVE TO DO IT THIS WAY.

    • @OtakuWrath
      @OtakuWrath ปีที่แล้ว +53

It was also horrible because the Kraken Club those Dark Knights used is one of the hardest items in the game to get. In some ways it would be harder to get a group of Dark Knights together with a full set of Kraken Clubs than it was actually beating Absolute Virtue itself. To get the Kraken Club, You had to farm 60 Beastmen seals which have a low-ish drop rate and then you had to spend those 60 seals to fight a fairly hard boss with 2 other players for a lower than 1% drop rate item that was even lower than expected because there was a chance to get something else in place of the Kraken Club in the drop pool, some even reported the drop rate at the time being as low as 0.02% and since it was such a desirable item, you also had to risk the other 2 people you fought the boss with sniping the item making it even harder to get. This item was the most expensive singular item in the game to purchase We'll ignore how much money and time it cost to farm end game content to get Excalibur since that wasn't money directly spent on the weapon alone. So again having a full group get together with this giga rare Kraken Club was at least as impossible as beating Absolute Virtue. It wasn't just rare either, It was desirable because it was also one of the strongest items in the game.

There were times before AV that SE changed things that didn't fit their vision of how the game should be played. The most notable I recall was removing almost all enmity gained from the mazurka's (notably raptor mazurka) since some of us were playing bard tank with great success in certain fights (Fafnir, Nidhogg, some other flying NMs). Sucks when someone discovers something in a game that is removed due to it being different than the developers way they would play the game.

Some other issues with Absolute Virtue: Since he can use every class's 2 hour ability, he could use the White Mage's ability Benediction.......which fully heals him.
Another big problem was the video that Square Enix showed. Outside of some of the hints, it was VERY clear that the footage was spliced from multiple attempts, meaning that the reason they took so long to show that video is because they heavily struggled to kill Absolute Virtue themselves. It's also been rumored for a long time that they never beat him at all since the video kinda just cuts to him dying, which makes people believe they used admin commands to instantly kill it.

The difficulty of AV was the wipe from Manafont/Chainspell and to an extent charm. The bulk of the time was holding AV and waiting for alliances to come unweakened and gain TP/buffs to try again. I was there when BG held it on Bahamut for forever. Benediction was annoying, but not the main problem. Meteor/Chainspell/Manafont was.

Every time the players figured out a cheese, but legal way to kill Absolute Virtue SE got pissed. Sometimes the players doing it legitimately were penalized for clearing it. It's rewards were garbage? Actually, I have a better term for that.
There was no reward for killing Absolute Virtue. When people were finally able to kill it legitimately, players were stunned to find out a secret SE was keeping all that time. Absolute Virtue had no drop table. In other words, you did not get ANYTHING for beating him outside of bragging rights. So, in short, not only did no one get good gear from AV, you didn't get ANYTHING AT ALL for beating him. Not even an absurd amount of gil. Not even one gil. So, all those people who were banned for exploiting AV? They were banned for no reason whatsoever, essentially. They were banned just so the developers could keep laughing at the players who would try for YEARS to kill this thing, to no avail. Absolute Virtue was never intended to be killable. He was always just one giant middle finger from the dev team to their players. AV was maliciousness given form, not a boss.

Regarding Raubahn EX, comments already mentioned the same issue happening a few quests later with another NPC, but there was arguably an even worse roadblock waiting about 2 hours later into the expansion.
When clearing the first Trial of Stormblood, The Pool of Tribute, there was a chance your game would crash, and continue to do so every time you tried to log in to the character that caused it.
After the cutscene that plays when clearing the Trial for the first time, your character would spawn in a body of water, and if you happened to start the Trial while doing an emote that couldn't be used while in water, the game couldn't handle that, resulting in a crash every time you log in with that character.
Once affected, there was no workaround to fix your character on your own, and Support had to manually relocate every affected character.
I remember all three roadblocks combined were sometimes called "The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost"

It also has a divergence where there are two things you need to do on two different maps, but you can do them in either order (thus splitting the players between two maps rather than having them all clogging one of them) and solo instances now had a queue system because they did not want that happening again!

I'm honestly surprised no MMO has since raid bosses have been a part of every MMO's meta for a long blasted time, it's precisely why I don't do trials on ESO because there's very limited folks willing to do guided runs for newbies so if you don't know their schedule or can't match with it you're just expected to already know and frankly a lot of the videos of the trials suck for teaching the mechanics. Even some of the vHM dungeons are a pain to learn the mechanics for, a friend and I've rerun some dungeons a lot and still occasionally get one tapped by stuff we've not seen trigger before (RNG or ZOS RNG? Who knows).
tl;dr An actual tactician role to allow for directing teams would be a godsend for raids with unknown mechanics to be researched properly.

Stormblood launch was a wild time. The game tried to move you into the Raubahn Ex instance after a cutscene, which if it couldn't, it would error and kick you back to the open world. The quest would reset just before you talked to Raubahn and then restart the cutscene over. Because of this, a specific line from the cutscene became rather memey. "It's like all of my namedays came at once!" became a repeated joke in the community for a while after.
Also, even if you cleared Raubahn Ex, there was another instanced quest a short time later, although not nearly as remembered as Raubahn's bottleneck caused it to become less of an issue. Thus Pippin Savage isn't quite as remembered.
And finally, there was a separate issue with the first trial in the expansion.
Trials are 8-man fights that usually have a normal, story mode difficulty, and then at max level (for the expansion), an extreme (Ex) difficulty.
Some players reported their game crashing upon completing the fight and exiting the boss's instance. When they attempted to relog into then game, they would be met with the same error, thus being unable to play their character in any fashion. This went on for a few days before being fixed.
    And what was the cause?
As one of the quality of life updates for the game, the game would remember what, if any, non-combat pets and or persistent emotes your character had out or was performing whenever you would logout/login or transition between instanced duties. What happened was, some players would reach the first duty, and while waiting for their queue to pop, would /sit or perform some other, similar, emote somewhere. After clearing the fight and leaving the instance, the game would teleport the player to were the story was supposed to take them, rather than were they were before, which is relatively normal for the game. The problem was this specific location was underwater (normal for narrative reasons), but the game would attempt to put the player back in their initial emote, and since each emote has a different animation for standing/sitting/mounted/underwater, it would attempt to load the underwater version of the emote. There was no underwater /sit, as it was normally disabled, so when the game client attempted to load it, it would error out and crash to desktop. And since it would attempt the same procedure when trying to relog in, the crash would occur every time the player tried logging in.
It took a few days to identify the problem, then Square removed that quality of life feature until it could be fixed later.

Fun fact about Raubahn Ex, it wasn't limited to him. Once you got past him, 12 hours later, you were directed back to town to speak to the leader. Despite having no fights, this was also a challenge. And after that, you were sent back out to the Fringes again (same zone) for another cutscene followed by a fight, which as you may have guessed, also did not work. It took a full week for all of the players to finally struggle passed all of the bottlenecks. I leveled my main class to 62 from daily roulettes, and leveled all of the rest of my jobs to 60, since any activities for that first week in the new zones were literally unplayable.

The whole "Stop, you can't use that tactic because we didn't think of and also we're patching it out." is too prevalent in gaming in the modern era. I played Borderlands 3 for a few months after launch and those devs were the worst about that sort of thing. Every single time anyone figured out a build that maximized perk and weapon synergy it would be patched out within a week, not even super exploits or massive glitches, just effective perk and weapon combinations. It was frustrating and made me stop playing the game completely. I stopped planning out my own builds after three or four of them got nerfed into oblivion and just started copying the latest online ones I knew would get patched because there was no point in putting any effort into my builds when they would just be erased.
FromSoftware had this issue too until they finally updated Elden Ring so that PvP and PvE stats are separate, something I've been calling for since the original Dark Souls. I remember my favorite weapon in DS3 was the Dark Sword, until it was nerfed, and then it was the Executioner's Sword, until it was nerfed, and then I just made a Pyromancer build to avoid that bullshit. Don't punish your players for doing the math to figure out which weapons and abilities are the best, if it's not a massive exploit just leave it alone.
Edit: I forgot to mention the thing that annoyed me most in BL3, it was all the bosses having 30+ second invincibility states to stop players from being able to just melt the boss with top tier weapons the way we had since the first game. The devs cared more about hampering the player than letting the players just have fun.

Word was that AV was never meant to be defeated at all until there was a public outcry about it, which was what prompted SE to actually start adding those new methods for weakening it.

Do keep in mind that Absolute virtue was not 18 hours of dull, redundant tank and spank. that's not too hard to do.
where it became vicious, it was when it was revealed to be a boss rush culminating in an 18 hours no-hit run with tenth of a second long QTEs. and it's not like "oh yeah. click the 9 key and you're chill for 2 hours". no. YOU click the 9 key. then the next one presses it, then the next one. so-on and so forth, which, if luck isn't on your side, could possibly mean you would have to press it 9 times during the run with a few tenths of a second timeframe.
all the while, the boss has OTHER strats than this specific quick-time-event. and of course, assuming NOBODY wiped, NOBODY fucked up their QTEs, NOBODY forgot to shift focus, NOBODY forgot to mitigate meteor, NOBODY allowed the boss to heal, NOBODY had to sleep, NOBODY had to go to work, NOBODY had to eat, NOBODY had even an itch anywhere or any reason at all to get distracted for 18 hours straight, NOBODY miscommunicated at all in the whole 18-hours-long run.
and of course, NOBODY left that dreadful encounter after the third wipe at the 3 hours timeframe because of a thrice-damned moron who forgot he was the third to click "9" and not the fourth.
definitely the greatest bossfight that ever was.

Absolute Virtue is a lesson in what not to do as a game dev. They made a god awful puzzle boss that’s near impossible to figure out while not giving the players any hints on how to solve said puzzle. And then when players figured out how to bypass the puzzle because they couldn’t figure out how to solve it because the solution was so absurdly obtuse and cryptic, the devs threw a tantrum and nerfed everything they used to do it. The fact that Square had to straight up tell players how to beat it and it was still so absurdly difficult that multiple years passed before anyone beat it in a way Square deemed “the right way” is beyond insane to me.

When it comes to Raubahn EX, the reason why it happened is because those instanced battles [and dungeons] are technically different servers and systems.
They broke, hard. So people could log into the game [cause it was its own system], but could not do anything that involved instances like dungeons, special quests like the Samurai one which had its own instanced location, etc.
Also, funny enough, Raubahn EX wasn't the only time it happened in Stormblood, it was just the worse time. An NPC barely a few quests later ALSO had the exact same problem, but since far less people could even reach him, it went under the radar a bit.

    @aaronlefebre5060 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Leave it to the MMOs of the franchise to carry some of the biggest controversies of the series.
Watching this video is a literal trip down memory lane for me, because I got to live through all of these when they happened (even though some of these are relatively recent).
I remember goofing around with an Absolute Virtue pop with a few other endgame linkshells when one of them popped it after Jailer of Love (this was before AV being 100% spawn after JoL kill), just throwing ourselves at it just to see how long someone could last. Nobody on the server at the time had a hope of killing it, and outside of one group that was massively arrogant about themselves and their "skills," nobody bothered to actively try to win, because at the time, there was no legit way to win. Seeing AV was pretty much the game telling you your night in sea was over. Congrats on whatever loot you got, gold star on your kill or whatever, now get out. That sort of thing.
When I ran into Raubahn EX, I just took that as my que to turn around, unlock Red Mage and Samurai, and level them until the servers sorted themselves out. By the time I got RDM up to the level of the MSQ in question, the whole situation was figured out and it wasn't an issue anymore. Enough people had gotten through or given up that the way was clear. That meant that Red Mage was my first 80 in Stormblood, and I'm glad I leveled that job. It was super fun and useful!
As far as both the GrubHub and World First fiascos, I just kinda sat on the side with my bucket of popcorn and watched the fireworks. I didn't live in an area that GH served at the time of the promo, and I normally just observe WF races (I don't normally do Savage tier raiding often, I do some rarely, but not nearly enough to be able to seriously think about going after Ultimates). Both were interesting shows to watch.

I've played FFXI since 2007, and I remember the whole saga with Absolute Virtue and Pandemonium Warden. Shortly before the raised level cap, two Summoner Avatars were released which made killing AV trivial, and that was never patched as far as I know. Before that, no. The terrain glitch and Dark Knight zergs were just about the only kills of AV before then, and as for Pandemonium Warden, he was similarly never killed before those Avatars were released (Alexander and Odin, by the way). Before the Avatars, the consensus was that it wasn't possible to kill either monster in 2 hours when the cap was still 75. Cap raise to 99, then item level cap raise to 119 made both monsters largely trivial today.

I’ve never played any of the FF games, but this video was so well done I felt like I had played them for years. Great job Kudos!

Even 1 hour to kill an mmo boss is far too long. Wtf were they expecting with absolute virtue. Its beyond obvious it's a terrible idea.

Honestly? I kind of like the addon ban in ff14. Its kind of the reason that wow bosses got super sweaty.

I still have fond memories of the FFXI grind and I’m fairly sure that’s because I wasn’t autistic enough to attempt Absolute Virtue and Pandaemonium Warden.
There’s challenging content and then there’s bashing your skull against the wall for 18+ hours you’ll never get back for an achievement flex no one will remember you have or even talk about years after the fact.
The irony of UNNAMED’s scandal is that it still overshadows the “legit” world first clear. So mission failed successfully, I guess?

The mods incident reminds me of how out of control DBM got in the WotLK expansion.
I actually quit raiding for a while because of it, and I was the guild leader and main raid leader.
I hated feeling like we had to use the tools everyone else was and took a break until Blizzard banned them. Raiding was never the same after that, I quit at the end of that xpac and havent really played WoW since, except to level up and experience the story of each new expansion.

I remember that too. I had finally hid level 80, gotten all my gear from the daily heroics and been recommended to a proper raiding guild. Two guys showed up to my interview and I got to whack at a dummy for 20 minutes while they used a mod to track my DPS.
Then I got handed a huge list of required mods and several long PDF files about the patterns I were to perform during specific boss fights; choreography instructions, basically. I was told to memorize them all, and to be logged in and waiting between 16 and 23 every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday so that I might get into a reserve spot in case the main guy and his reserves ahead of me didn't show up.
That's when I decided that I had had my fun with the game and that it was time to move on. Bear in mind that I was 13.

One thing that came to light after the recent Ultimate drama, was that SE themselves test and "beat" Ultimates with inhouse versions of the same mods they and they themselves cannot beat the Ultimates without them.

Once you've reached the pinnacle there's no need for modifiers in your name. It is not a weapon. It is *the* weapon.

Genuinely kind of surprised the GShade controversy didn't make it to this video. The author literally included malware in a fucking shader program that'd shut down and reboot your PC just because some other mod developer made a shade preset the dude didn't like.

One of the biggest scandals that rarely gets brought is the guy playing eve online that got killed in the Bengazhi attack. Maybe it's too dark of a story
