I gave up allowing oil to get dirty then draining it in 1963. Multi grade oil was crap and cost about double the price of Standard Delo. Multi grade didnt hold up in a diesel. Delo came in 30W and 20 W. 29 cents a quart in the discount stores. You can still get Chevron Delo 100 10 W to 50 W. I might order some for the Ford diesel tractor. The engine sticker says you can use 10 40 but in hot summer use use 30. I put Walmart 15W 40 diesel conventional. Hard to find 30 W winter grade. The 30 weight that was in it didnt flow at 32 F. Not winter grade. My boss put over 350.000 miles on a 292 big 6 in a early 60s Chevy Suburban using Delo 100 20W. He had a dragster and was sponsored by Chevrolet. He got Valvolene racing oil and Baldwin filters free. He didnt drain the oil in the tow rig. We managed to get by without synthetic oil. We used toilet paper filters.

The most important items on any oil change is to use the proper viscosity, as recommended by the manufacturer, and to perform the oil change when needed. Brand doesn’t matter as much. It can be argued that Mobil 1 or Royal Purple may use a few extra ounces of detergent but all manufacturers tend to meet and exceed what is federally mandated.

You don't have to be a certified lubrication specialist to know that you get what you pay for. I'm old enough to know that that saying is very true, you get what you pay for. There's a reason why Mobil1 and Pennzoil and Royal Purple is more money. Yes, marketing costs have to do with it but that doesn't mean the quality or amount of additive packages don't have anything to do with it. I would never use Supertech oils unless it was the only oil left on the planet and I needed to run my cars. But as he says, you do what you feel is right or necessary. He also keeps saying "a million miles." I wonder if he knows what a million miles really is. Among 3 vehicles you'd have to run each to 333,333 miles to get to a million. Or you can have 10 vehicles each with 100k miles and there's your million miles. The proof is in the pudding, none of us can tell how good or bad a specific oil is operating unless we send oil samples for analysis on a regular basis, and also break the engine down after say 200k miles and compare that to the same engine with the same miles using another oil. I always recommend just about ANY brand of oil, even Idemitsu and Eneos. I always tell people, if you value your car and engine, avoid the bargain basement stuff. For a few more dollars you can sleep easy knowing you have a known and trusted brand of motor oil like Mobil1 or Pennzoil in your engine.

I am very impressed with what I've read about the new Valvoline 150k-plus. It was released last year. It did magnificently in engine protection testing. SuperTech, blended by Warren Distribution (same as AmazonBasics, Kirkland, etc.), probably gets "standard" dexos1 additives from Lubrizol, and then Warren buys somebody's GroupIII synthetic and blends away. You could do it yourself, if Lubrizol or Oronite or Afton would sell you their dexos1 chemical soup (I.e., Lubrizol PV1500 liquid), and you followed their recipe with base GroupIII oil viscosity types, and I think you would still need to put in a VII chemical in that recipe. That's what Warren does. Commodity chemical technology, good to go.,

Caveat - I ran CNG in the past, now propane as a fuel. Higher combustion temps for propane
Driving around town? Use it. Keep an eye on the oil level.
To sum it up, no wear problems but this oil seems to eat itself
I'd like someone to post if they noticed the same thing
When ultra platinum went on half price sale I filled up a Sprinter with it, ya i save 50% over time but it was a little ridiculous buying $1000 worth of oil 🤣

Never understood buying the 5qt jug to save $$$$ and then buy a single quart if your vehicle takes 6. Kinda negates the savings from the jug purchase. Makes more sense to buy 2 jugs and keep them rotated. Just like using SuperTech oil won't blow up your engine, storing a 5qt jug that's been opened won't blow up your engine the next time you pour from it. Sounds like you change oil often enough that it's really nothing to worry about. Go for the ultimate overall savings.

Change you oil between 3000 to 5000 miles, especially if you have a newer vehicle. If it has a turbo or direct injection, 3000 miles is when I would change. These newer motors are all about efficiency, and they do very stupid things engineering wise to get you there. Clean oil is essential to keep the motor in tip top shape, especially with a low displacement modern Turbo Motors. And do not forget the transmission folks... Again, many of these newer vehicles need a transmission service every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. Some of the CVT transmissions, NISSAN, every 20,000 to 30.000 miles, as they are junk.

I love this argument, been messing around and building engines as a hobby since late 80s and i have used countless brand engine oils over these years (same goes for oil filters) and i have yet to have one failure due oil (or a filter). Also, i have pulled apart several engines and looked at the bearings & cylinder bores guess what no damage from cheap oil. If you change your oil frequently and use right viscosity as far as oils go it’ll be fine! With that said i use Mobil1 syn now because its @ $25 at walmart but as others stated this supertech seems to score high in tests out there.

I just bought a 23 Chevy Traverse. I stopped by a mechanic friend that only does engine & transmission work. He prefers to work on classic cars. He has more business than he knows what to do with.
I asked him about oil. With the most honest look on his face he said. “ I just use the cheapest O’Rielly Brand. I call them up and they bring it to me.” I have never had an engine failure do to oil. So buy the cheapest oil with the correct weight recommended in your manual. Change it at 3,000 or 3,500 miles and you will be worry free. Everything else is advertising & marketing. You simply do not need expensive oils.

How many miles does your car get to the 50% mark? then you do your OC??
    For me, I change 2 cars. Both Toyota, 4 cylinders, & 5w-30. Rav4 97 3s-fe & Highlander 01 2az-fe
The Rav4 uses the Castrol OG green bottle high milage. & uses both Purolator 1 & Bosch Premium. That's the "family ghetto rav4" so it's our grocery, home depot, utility car. Because of that, the oil gets changed once a year. Barely gets 3,000 within the year.
The Highlander though gets experiment on different brands. The green bottle, ultra clean, black full synthetic, pennzoil full synthetic & valvoline max life. All oils get burned but reason why I bought them was because they WERE within 22-24$
But NOW the valvoline is 29-35$ at Walmart, Castrol is 22-27$, & Pennzoil is 25$ super tech used to be 17$ & its now 22$ & each of the 1 quart bottles are at least 8$

They are good for a bit longer than regular mineral oil. 10,000 miles is absurd. It is just marketing to the impoverished and uneducated masses that live in America. They see 10k miles printed on the bottle and assume the oil is good for 10k becauses it says so on the bottle. Walmart serves a lot of poor and stupid people. Other than that if you change this oil frequently you can get phenomenal mileage out of your engine, ...just like the man says: cheap clean oil is far better than dirty expensive oil. Actually it is preferred to change more frequently with a cheaper oil than go long with a moderately better oil. Frequent changes flush out microscopic metal particles that accumulate in the engine from one oil change to the other as not all oil is exchanged. Over time this accumulation grows. Tiny metal particles, much smaller than what the filter can catch are responsible for most of the engine wear as they chip into smooth metal surface and erode it, ...which produces more and more of these particles. It is a preferred strategy to change very frequently using cheaper but still specked oil.

He tried saying all modern cars had that issue. Wrong. It was just certain Hondas in a certain model year. (2018). Just patently dishonest. Thank you! I think Pennzoil is a fine choice. And I echo using the Factory filters.

That's only 4 companies in a World making oil additives. That's exact synthetic oil as all those brand names . And it cost less then $2 for gallon to make it

How many months does it take you to reach 50% oil life?

    • @jeremsgarage
      @jeremsgarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

About 6 weeks or so. As of today, 7/5/22 I’m already at 65%. I’ll be changing the oil again soon. Towing 1300 miles really pulls the oil life % down. At least it seemed to to me. Thanks for watching!

I watched other videos when they cut open oil filter and saw some filters made off paper and stapled together inside like Fram and AC delco.I stopped buying by the case on ebay super tech filter are well made and cheep at wal mart thanks.

Good point! The SuperTech filters are good filters. I do use the ACdelco filters as SuperTech and other house brands don’t make filters for the 2.7l just yet. I’ve not seen the AC/Delco filters be made of glued cardboard. I’ve only seen them with metal cores. But I may dissect the filter I pull off of this oil change.

I just run its cousin the Costco brand for regular use. I change back to AMSOIL for my off-road adventures, no problems 👍
How can this mechanic and regular user be wrong with his reasoning why. I had used Kirkland synthetic for 3 years no problems even after I scrutinize my oil, send it off and check the literature and compare to when I was using AMSOIL.
After they fired all the oil workers and now we're buying foreign oils, products have sky rocketed? I don't think Biden knows that high fuel prices causes prices in Rural US towns prices soar? Cheers👍

It’s been really tough watching prices skyrocket like they have. Really sad.
