    picking up a gmmk pro soon and this was super informative, thank you. i would love to see the pcb tape mod + pe foam mod + different combinations of the two in a future video, since those seem to be fairly popular as of late :)
    edit: also in combination with the triple gasket; very curious about how that would sound

    • @CaloysKeyboards
      @CaloysKeyboards  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, I plan on being very thorough with all of the possible configurations of the PE foam mod (under PCB, over PCB, both) as well as in combination with the tape mod. Unfortunately, I've already replaced the triple gaskets with a single D65 gasket as they'd gotten pretty mangled by my repeatedly taking the board apart and putting it back together again lol

    Great video! I finished putting my gmmk pro together yesterday and went insane w the stabs. Had durock v2 and pc plate and heard weird higher pitch on the right side spacebar too and kept tuning them. Never knew it was the plate bowing until I saw your vid. I clipped the pc plate to fit the stabs but not gonna go back in to clip other parts lol. Idk if you hear it in yours but on the 2u stabs it also sounds off when pressed nearest to the center of the keyboard. Anyway I fixed all stab issues by finding the deepest and thockiest switch out of my black inks to use w the stabs lol. Loved your pt 2 vid too

      @CaloysKeyboards  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Yea those plates and stabs will really drive you crazy lol. I don't notice anything with my stabs now but the PE foam may be hiding any issues. Listening back to the sound tests in this video, I do think I can hear some difference between the sides of the shorter stabilized keys although I didn't press them enough in this to be sure hehe

    Fantastic video!
    Just received my GMMK Pro yesterday and had some of the same issues as you did.
    Stock stabs - overlubed and super sticky. Used Durock V2's instead and had a go at the Epsi mod using the same KBDfans strips. This caused two of my stabs to stick so I removed them and traditionally lubed them with Krytox. Tried the Holy mod a while ago with Durocks and same issue.
    PC Plate - It was super tight and I had to kind of stretch the plate to fit properly around the volume control areas. Did not like that you had to use the self tapping screws and hope they have not shredded the diffuses as I have an Fr4 plate on the way. I will check my Escape key when I get home.
    I removed the plate foam, PE foam modded it and kept the case foam and it sounds pretty nice. I kept the stand-offs as was not sure if they were really needed.
    Also had to take my stabs off a third time as they come with factory installed bandaids so I peeled them off and used some alcohol to clean it.
    Volume button was super tight as well for me.
    Anyway I have the FR4 plate on the way in September and hope that this will fit (and sound) nice.
    The GMMK Pro has a few flaws but I think with a new aftermarket plate /stabs and pe foam modded its a nice board.

    What a good video! Thank you for sharing.
    I have both the aluminum and polycarb plates and you're right, the polycarb is slighly bowing in the middle and will cause some switches to be much looser. My Esc key and Page Up/Page Down would easily be pulled off (without much effort) sometimes even when my finger brushes the keycap it would pull the switch off. I did not have this problem with the aluminum plate. Moving forward, I am looking to mod my polycarb plate to see if it could be fixed - I noticed the tight portion would be at the rotary encoder and that's where i would start.

    • @CaloysKeyboards
      @CaloysKeyboards  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @CaloysKeyboards  3 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @shiftycaps
    @shiftycaps 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Keep up the good work! I am currently using a GMMK Pro with holee modded Durock stabs on an aluminum plate with EPBT caps. You should also try the PE foam mod!

      Thanks! Yep, the PE foam mod is definitely on my list for the next video hehe

    • @saarxee19
      @saarxee19 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is the PE foam mod?
      You succeed installing the Durock stabs on the aluminun? how?

    • @CaloysKeyboards
      @CaloysKeyboards  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The PE foam mod involves using the foam pouch that comes with the GMMK Pro as dampener. You cut a layer of it to sit on top of the PCB and push the switches through it. You can also place a layer under the PCB and either layer can be used with the stock foam of the board. The Jelly Epoch also uses a layer of this PE foam and that's how this GMMK Pro mod was conceived.
      I have not been able to use the Durock V2s with the aluminum plate. What I'm doing right now is using the wire and stems from the Durock V2s and using them with the GOAT housings, allowing them to fit into any plate (c/o TH-camr Anzel). I've holee modded them and I'm still in the process of breaking them in so I can't say for sure yet if it works well.

  • @JDawg00
    @JDawg00 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Glorious Pandas are indeed the tightest switch I've owned. Definitely more pronounced with the GMMK Pro. I also stopped using the Holee Mod due to the inconsistent resistance until you thoroughly break them in. Instead, try going for just XHT-BDZ on the wires. Very consistent in my experience, easy to properly and evenly coat as well.
    Also, the GMMK Pro PCB tends to bow especially after using the PC plate. This impacts the spacebar stab heavily, introducing a weird kind of tick / rattle.

    • @CaloysKeyboards
      @CaloysKeyboards  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm in the middle of experimenting with the holee mod for part 2 and it's once again driving me crazy lol. Different materials will introduce different levels of resistance and I got so many suggestions for different things to try. I'll have to try XHT-BDZ.
      Yeah I experienced the weird spacebar tick/rattle with the GOAT and C3 stabs. The Durock V2s seem immune but I'm not sure why 😅

    • @JDawg00
      @JDawg00 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CaloysKeyboards I actually got the "GOAT" stabs to a usable level after XHT-BDZ. Got it from JMK's Shopee page. :) I think with the Durock being a tighter fit, it might be resisting any bend whatsoever. You can immediately tell when you press really hard on the function row (or the opposite edge), then try tapping the spacebar. If it suddenly sounds 1000x better, it's a bowing issue. :(

    • @CaloysKeyboards
      @CaloysKeyboards  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I've been eyeing the XHT-BDZ but it's kinda expensive lol. How much of it did you get?
      I realized it was the bowing when the issues disappeared when using the aluminum plate since that one is rigid and keeps the PCB straight.

    • @JDawg00
      @JDawg00 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CaloysKeyboards Just the smallest variant! 3g I think. But I can see it being more than enough for a couple of stab sets. GMMK Pro definitely performs best with the stock alu plate. If there's just one good thing about the PC plate, it makes switch swapping so much easier. It pulls away from the PCB like a bedsheet, lol. Then switches pop off with minimal effort.

      Yes, Mech Merlin said that there is a risk of that with this material. There is PE foam that is treated to be anti-static, which should protect against ESD. From what I've read, most people haven't really had any board-breaking issues when using untreated PE foam. I've read some who had issues with switch inputs: double inputs or non responsive keys. I've read another person say the side LEDs on their board stopped working for a few seconds after plugging in some bluetooth speakers. I think it's probably better to be safe than sorry.

      @@CaloysKeyboards Omg I actually did experience double inputs on my keyboard and some non responsive keys, I just assumed it was because the PE foam was "lifting" up the switch so it didn't really go fully into the PCB so I just pressed harder to get the switches in, I guess I'll remove them now, thanks!

      Happy to help 😊. I'm still not actually sure if those issues can be attributed to static but yeah, better safe than sorry😅
