Woodefordes home brew kits are really good, i have done a few, and put some extra malt in them, to enhance the flavours.

That kit gets loads of hate on forums so it'll be good to hear how it turns out.

Hopefully it's a belter and they're all being miserable sods. Had the b and M IPA last night and I really thought it would be great but it was ok at best even with a spilt and tweaks. Two of us reviewing and it was a 5 or 6 out of 10. I'll get it again if I can find it for 6 quid. If you get some make it up to the full 11.5 litres as its 5.6% at that. If you shortbrew it can get to 7 percent really easily and has alcohol burn. But don't swap out the yeast as it's a rebranded Mangrove Jack's kit and they have really decent yeasts.
      Crack on, mate.

For finings buy a cheap box of powdered gelatin. You only use about half a teaspoon so it's dirt cheap. Search for 'fining beer gelatin' for instructions. Just don't tell any whining vegetarians who might try your beer. Chitosan is made from shellfish shells so don't tell them when you use that, either.
Can you put your hydrometer in plain water and take a reading to check it's calibrated right. It should sit at 1.000. This kit usually starts off at 1.042, not 52, and a lot of time you say your beers finish at 1.020 which with the strength of beers you do means that the fermentation is stuck, so maybe the hydrometer is off. The other thing could be that you've not brewed to 23 litres, but it would be closer to 18 litres to get it up to 1.052.
