Every time Ruby begins to doubt and criticize herself, its immediately followed by other characters coddling and stroking her ego by telling her she's actually a great leader

Something that bothered me throughout Volume 8 was how every time Ruby realized she was a bad leader and felt hopless, one of her friends cheered her up and made her feel better. Ruby isn't allowed to realize her mistakes, and she can keep making more of them.

@@loiiysailor1177 RT and, to be fair, many shows have a bad tendency to portray Authority=Bad.
Not that authority should never be questioned, indeed, it should always be question, but never baselessly ridiculed and undetermined for no other purpose than to perpetuate a long since exhausted and deromanticized Hippie-Era "Fight the power, man" rhetoric.
I have said before, but I'll state again. If you want a GOOD story of questioning authority, look no further than the Clone Wars Umbara Arc. Instead of the RWBY approach where the plucky "Heroes" are always right and hate anyone who says different, Fives has a lot of respect for Captain Rex, the chain of Command and his duty. He does however have a problem with following orders that seem blatantly wrong.
Rex likewise, isn't a "Bootlicker" (a phrase that's losing more and more of it's impact) He understands and even shares his men's frustration. He even does his best to BEND the rules rather than break them outright.
Finally, there's no low-blow, "Yas Kween" "Still following orders?" (I hate Yang so much) moment. Despite difference in opinion, there is still RESPECT from soldier to soldier. Rex doesn't treat Fives like a brat and Fives doesn't think Rex is a tool. They understand the situation sucks and that any good army needs a healthy balance of order and independence.

Everytime Ruby calls herself out on her own bullshit the other characters reassure her that she's this beacon of hope for the world and inspiration for all to follow.

It could've worked. Honestly a lot of moments in RWBY are actually really amazing ideas and valuable for the story. It seems what holds the story back from being more positively received is a failure to recall past events properly and poor on-the-fly set up. There's a reason why some shows hire a continuity director, as their job helps organize and remind writers what should and shouldn't be. By the words of another youtuber, I wish the show would stop threatening to be sometimes good.

But instead we get the character sitting around whining for a bit about how things aren't going her way and how she's made mistakes, Yang coming in and telling her that she made mistakes but can't give up, and then moments later having the universe hand them a solution that completely negates all of the doubts Ruby had about her choices because now those choices are paying off.

I know that 90% of the issue in RWBY come from the writing, but I'm starting to think that they've expanded the story beyond what their medium can reliably deliver; at least with how they approach it.
15-20 minutes of animation spread across 10+ characters in which most of it is regurgitating exposition and rewriting/explaining rules of the world to each other? There's hardly any room left to develop characters anymore. If the writing was good, they good get characters developed and establish lore/setting all at once, but clearly they can't handle that.

I really hate with every fiber of my being that, dispite Ruby and the gang literally being the reason things got so bad with Atalas and the fact that they made every possible decision that put everything at risk or outright worsen the situation, they suffered NO CONSEQUENCES.
And I don't mean Salem getting the relics. I mean REAL consequences. Where are the mountain of bodies of civilians due to Ruby and the gang primarily sitting on their asses drinking tea? Where is the exhaustion from stretching themselves to far trying to protect people? Hell, where is any sort of tension that they might fail? ANYTHING to show that they screwed up and cost people their lives.
For Christ sake, they just brought two cites worth of people into a desert land that is famously known to be dangerous and wild. Not to mention that Salem will be on the way. I feel like RWBY would've been a better written show if Monty hadn't made friends with RoosterTeeth to help him create the show. Monty could've gone to anyone else who was highly skilled in character development, world building, lore-keeping and much more. But instead Monty went to a team of college dropouts who are only good at creating parodies and playing video games. I know I sound like a scumbag for saying that, but I at least finally am able to say what's on my mind. RWBY sucks because the people behind it are unqualified to handle the responsibility of making it and developing it. Monty should've recognized that before he tragically past away. This show could have been so much better if RoosterTeeth said, "Nah. Go find someone else." Someday when this show ends, I hope that this series is rebooted properly by someone who isn't friends with RoosterTeeth or a member of the fandom. Someone who actually understands storytelling. That's just a given and basic common sense. And tbh....alot of people don't like to admit this but Monty wasn't all that good at storytelling himself. Or making the best choices for his show. I know alot of people like to endlessly praise Monty but what carried RWBY from the beginning was the fight scenes and iconic character designs. And music. That was at the beginning when no one was complaining as much. Miles and Kerry fully taking the reins of the show only drove it deeper into an already sinking hole. Monty was putting in last minute additions at random and RT had to make WoR due to the world being so underdeveloped. It would've taken a miracle to make RWBY a good show on its own merits post Vol 3. I keep telling people that RWBY always has had flaws since its inception and they've just become more visible overtime. The narrative was never RWBY's strongpoint, it was a combination of random stuff that made it iconic.

Speaking of opinions as you clearly detailed in the video, Yang voiced her opinion on Ruby’s leadership but then she doubles back on it because why??? Nothing Ruby did brought Yang, Ren, Jaune and Oscar back safely. That was Hazel and Ozpin. Now if Ruby’s message had help arrive and save Yang’s group from Salem, that would be a much better way to do that imo, in which case Yang’s statement when her and Ruby talk about optimism would make sense. This also goes back to the writers trying to portray Team RWBY as always right so Yang’s statement actually means, “It doesn’t matter if we fucked up, at least we tried.” Which I guess Yang is saying well she fucked up too when she got interrupted by the hound so she shouldn’t be so hard on Ruby. And now after all that, I’ve determined the only character with any sense is Ren who clearly stated that they have no idea what they’re doing and they keep messing up and they should leave it to be people with experience. Like Ironwood…oh wait…that’s right! He went full dictator because he actually had a clue on how to handle a situation like that and Team RWBY has to be the one to be the greatest heroes so I guess Ironwood had to go. The big problem of this scene is, that it shows that RWBY can't do quiet moment. It feels like a puzzle where the pieces to solve it are there, but taken from different puzzles instead of the one in front of you.
Ruby for example has every right to be down in this scene. Her "plans" didn't work, she involved civilians into combat (even though she should be protecting them) and she has an ultimatum to deal with that costs either the life of a friend or the life of uncounted civilians.
Yang is actually the person who can talk to Ruby, since she questioned her leadership before and she had her own hardships while being away from her sister.
But the endresult doesn't match. Ruby isn't allow to face her mistake and grow from it. Instead her own sister basically says "You were right the entire time" and gives her the solution to her problem on a silver platter. The entire problem is solved too quickly and leaves no impact.
Yang on the other hand doesn't show any concern about Ruby's opinion until Ruby is depressed. I never got the feeling that her going against the opinion of Ruby (her sister and teamleader) really bothered her and she was more concerened about Blake than Ruby.
Add in that Ruby and her team get out of the situation without casualties and being proven right about Ironwood, the scene ends with a bad realization:
The writers don't want Ruby and her team to loose or to look bad. Be it combat, social skills or planning, RWBY is shown to be either right or get out without any problems left behind.

  • @oneangryboi408
    @oneangryboi408 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Throughout all the seasons with Ruby, she seemed pretty uncaring about the world around her. It was understanding in a way before Season 3, but now, its rather lost in character and doesn't show proper mature development of Ruby. Ruby, who had to grow up rather quickly when she was allowed to enroll with her big sister into a very prestigous school, learn a weapon that is well-known to be complicated rather young, and have said school destroyed in later seasons. Not even to mention she also underwent through some traumatic experiences involving her own sister being mortally wounded, losing her teammates, and witnessing the lives of her friends being killed.
Now, hear me out, this could've worked, in my opinion, if this attitude came later rather than been around since the beginning of RWBY. The issue of trauma and mental health are so thrown under the bus in this show that there would've been some form of held justice to fixing on that issue if the happy and rainbow Ruby underwent a change. Seeing just Yang undergo PTSD for like, less than a season or so worth of episodes was extremely lackluster as a plot point to me.
And because of the apparent grimm sensing negative emotion and end up becoming attracted to it. There should've been far more grimm that had devastating power than the cannon fodder they are now. Ruby, Yang, etc should've had a bit of a problem with grimm due to their own grieves. Sure, we can talk about the Apathy (which I thought was pretty good if not rather plot hole-y) being 'that moment,' but otherwise, there's no real struggle for the team when it involves action and their own emotional turmoils.
Sorry for the rant, but seeing anything involving the use of trauma and struggle throughout the show disappointedly keep missing for me, especially Qrow's struggle involving alcohol. He just throws it away and all his problems were solved. Yang's PTSD and abandonment issues involving Adam, Blake, and her mother (Raven) were thrown away and solved because she beat Adam (nerfed to all hell, mind you) and said a few mean words or two to her mother. Etc, etc.
For a show that's supposed to be "dark", they seem really scared to dive into dark topics. Which is unfortunate, because the Apathy episode was one of my favorite to go off of involving the idea of grimm there to actually CREATE negative emotion that eats away at people to the point of death, showing the crude and horrifying extent of Salem's will to obtain whatever she pleases.

Qrow’s alcoholism is also played as a joke, it’s like how “Avengers Endgame” made fun of the fact Thor was fat. Yang can’t get mad at Blake because it’s Blake, her justifiable anger towards her is made out to be the fact she’s upset because Blake isn’t there. The songs of the show portray a dark reality that doesn’t exist in the series.

Yang and Ruby relationship is nonexistent at this point. I wish the writers made them have meanful sister moments. Like have them both working together as sisters made Ruby ask Yang about Raven and how she feel about her. It would have been cool if volume 2 or volume 4 had Ruby and Yang have flashbacks about their childhood. Like have Yang in volume 4 having dream about the day she saw ruby as baby and swearing she will protect her further showing her love for her sister. Or have Ruby talk about her favorite memories with Yang as kids with Jaune, Nora, and Ren. Small moments like this would have show us the relationship with Ruby and Yang is special. It's the same problem that we see with something like Ren and Yang's conflict. They have this big argument where both of them are bringing up a lot of points, ends when Ren explodes at Jaune in anger, and then later he just kind of apologizes and the show acts like that was the resolution to their entire conflict. Um...no? Him apologizing for blowing up at Jaune doesn't resolve the issues revolving around the completely legitimate arguments he was making that were criticizing their decisions. Just because he lashed out at the end of the argument doesn't mean that every point he made was just blindly lashing out with no basis.
Acting like they've resolved conflicts without ever actually resolving them is a recurring problem with the series, and it's been rearing its ugly head a *lot* in the last couple of volumes. Like, this is "God's Not Dead" levels of conflict resolution writing. If you can't come up with a way to actually convince the audience that your protagonist is right, then just have the people who disagree with them either suddenly stop disagreeing with them without ever having their points addressed or make them such comical mustache-twirling villains that you have to side with the protagonist by default.

There is only one or actually two little detail(s), that shows that the SEW point don't make sense at all. 1. Tyrian was send after Ruby because Cinders little "mood" problem at this time, so Salem send him out to literally cheer Cinder up a bit. Then we have also the scene where Salem warned Cinder that she should take care of Ruby, before she get the full controll of her powers. So Qrow was actually making up a theory, why Tyrian tried to get Ruby. Then for some reason the FNDM started to believe that Salem had a plan with Ruby all along and Cinder wasn't allowed to harm her because of that. In reality it was a "Salems Plan first and Cinders Ruby Problem later." Watts, Tyrian & Hazel didn't care, Salem didn't care about SEW, because her followers killed them in the past. When Salem had projects like the Hound in the past, where are her results? Where are the remains of subjects that died in the process? Is there a chamber in Salems castle like the one in the Bluebeard fairytale?
We shouldn't also forget that Eddy stated a while ago, that they start the writing of each season of RWBY with a wishlist of things they want to show in the Volume and then their is a fact, that in the forum of their own homepage, fans wrote their RWBY theories and the writers could simply pick that theories as ideas of their own, because "Their show and everything that's RWBY including fanmade stuff belongs to them!" What's wrong, after the Trivolver situation i found a pdf doc from a german lawyer, who is familiar with Cons and Fandoms and fan creations are fan properties - There is no free use for Copyright Owners, because the own the Copyright. Fans can't make profit with fanart - Cosplayers included, besides the company hires them, but we have still a well working Model Business...so...yeah...
Back to the topic, that Ruby & Yang scene in V8 was boring. And for me it's the entire situation, Ruby and Yang had several episodes an argument about the Ironwood Situation and everybody act either unbelievable stupid or in case of Ren...yeah everybody should know about that part of V7/V8.
Blake and Yang didn't talk really about the entire Beacon Situation, they killed Adam and hold hands - issue gone. Yang questions Rubys desicions as leader, team breaks up to deal with two problems at the same time. Team reunites...oh wait, hound turn out to be really humanoid inside Ruby is shocked, but joins a call with the others and...act not you would like you would imagine somebody would be after such a situation. The Hound only becomes in that Yang and Ruby scene as useless plotdevice, serious Ruby could have been in a room alone. That could have been the start of a subplot of Ruby starting to develop a real fear of losing against Salem and becoming the next hound and of course that Summer was transformed in such a monster. But it's again only a bunch of plotpoints thrown together hold together by characters stupid for the sake of the "plot".

It ends up feeling hollow anyway because RT can't write Family dynamics for shit anymore.
This scene also shows the same problem that Ruby's talk with Jaune in v4 and Maria's v6 had: just pump up Ruby's head with delusional asspats that she is a great leader and wonderful person and best girl instead of either justifyingly calling her out or giving tangible advice that she has to follow.
Basically... Ruby's got a huge ego over her wanting to be like the heroes in the books... and people are pumping nothing but "good jobs" and meaningless support to get her where she and to an extent RT is. One of my problems with the idea that Summer was turned into a hound grimm is that when the hound first debuted, Salem specifically said it was an experiment, which implies that the hound in V8 was the first of its kind, which means Salem did not turn Summer into a hound grimm.
However there are only two ways this idea works. The first is that Salem did not turn Summer into a hound grimm, but she tried to and she was basically just a test subject/guinea pig and the hound we got was the final product. The second is that Salem actually has hordes of these type of grimm (including a Summer hound), but hasn't used them yet, which means the grimm in V8 wasn't an experiment as in the first of its kind, but rather an experiment as in the first of its kind *to be used* . Personally, I think the first might be the better option because the second would be like skinning retcon territory (if you even wanna call it that) with the only thing keeping it out of retcon territory being unclear wording with the line.

There are plenty of talented writers with experience and animators and others who can mold this series into what it should be but because of ego, money, and bullshit, they don’t get into RT or stay at RT bc then that would mean people can’t take credit for it anymore. It’s ridiculous. Like they clearly don’t have the writing experience. Hire someone who does and listen to them. You can still input ideas and be a part of it. It’s like they’re too egotistical to change and the show suffers for it.

    • @MagmaSpacer

@@ctcdreamer Sorry for the long post in advance. There are excuses though. If you really think about it no one started taking issues seriously about their work until AFTER volume 3, and volume 4 was their first year with the new animation engine. Coupled with inexperience and trying to do too much the volume could have been better but the ideas weren’t all bad. Volume 5 is where things really went downhill. They made extra character shorts for little reason and tried making extra episodes but it flopped hard. Then we had volume 6 that started off fine and then went downhill again near the end. There seemed to be improvement there but things were still mismanaged. They had to split resources with Gen: Lock which was hard on workers. So REALLY they’ve only had 2.5 years before they should have definitely hired new talent. But you notice after volume 6 they hired new writers to help and they started splitting the workload. They took advice and got new people to hopefully improve things. Yet once again their attempt at growth isn’t going well seeing as the new authors aren’t able to just fix the mistakes already made in the past.
You can’t necessarily try, make mistakes, try to act on those mistakes, and then act like they didn’t care. After every set of monumental volumes something was changed or improved upon to make things better hopefully but it didn’t work.
FURTHERMORE I don’t know how much of this influence is by Miles, Kerry, Eddy, and Kiersi. How much power do they really have to get new or different writers? If you could inform me of this I’d greatly appreciate it.
AND even if there are talented writers and animators we have no idea who actually asked to be a writer or applied to be an animator there but was rejected. There have been issues in the past regarding the company itself so I could see not wanting a part of it.
I’d like to give the benefit of the doubt seeing as things have indeed changed before. Could the writers have an ego? Perhaps. But I can’t quite say they didn’t try. I just think they’re going about things wrong. Maybe I’m in denial but whether I’m right or wrong isn’t going to change anything.

@@MagmaSpacer I never said anything about them not trying. What I’m trying to say is they just seem to take long to adapt to change and when they do try and implement certain changes, they execute it poorly. I’m basing my statements based off things I’ve seen change in the series and looking into the company and watching RT media aside from RWBY to observe the process of some of the people involved in the creative process. I understand they’re putting some level of effort, but it’s not enough considering what issues continue to be present in the series. They even took an extra year hiatus to be better prepared and get everything done. I have no issue with that. They need the time. Animation alone takes FOREVER to do. You can spend several hours working on less than a minute of footage. Some animation errors can be overlooked but the writing? I mean c’mon have you ever read RWBY fan fiction before??? They have better continuity and execution than the series creators themselves and that’s just sad. I enjoy the series and I love the characters, it’s just really frustrating and upsetting to see and understand how scenes should flow and see the execution fail so spectacularly. And I’m referring to that Blake and Ruby scene when they were fighting the Grimm. Since we’ve only seen them interact on screen like twice, Blake’s entire plea just seems forced and fake and that’s upsetting. I loved the scene where Blake pokes fun at Ruby for not understanding her semblance and that banter. That cool and refreshing to see. But that interaction is not enough to warrant such a dramatic response from
Blake. It’s like the equivalent of watching someone go on a first date with someone and 5 minutes later they profess their undying love and ask you to marry them. It’s absolutely ridiculous. And there are so many different opportunities for them to interact in the series in little ways that if enough were built up, could definitely have justified that moment.
Volume 6 is actually my favorite volume. I’m learning now that more people are very critical about it. I even have the DVD because I enjoyed that volume so much personally so I want to watch more YT content and see what the main critiques were.
I’ve invested time and money into RT, for RWBY specifically so it’s disappointing to see certain issues continue to persist. Despite how upset I may be though, I still enjoy the series and won’t quit on it.

I'm gonna paraphrase the next line Yang said "I'm not saying we did everything correctly but if we sat back and did nothing things could have gone a lot worse." Girl I'm surprised things didn't go a lot worse BECAUSE you did something so incredibly stupid on both accounts the next one being everyone agreeing that stealing an Airship was a good idea. The next stupid thing that finally had repercussions but was a little later instead of unfortunately not immediately was Blake and Yang for some reason having the bright idea of telling Robyn the details of what they're plans are for the tower. They knew next to nothing about this woman and her group only hearsay that she's Robin Hood but didn't know of where the supplies she took actually went.
I wish Ren was able to call out more of their stupidity or someone honestly.

When I first watched this episode, I said it was one of my favorites because the characters “talked”. Now, looking back, this episode was, I’m sorry, TERRIBLE. “Trust is a risk?” You’re telling me THAT’S the theme after they spent an ENTIRE VOLUME not trusting Ironwood and partially starting this whole conflict?? Wtf?
And don’t even getting me started on Ozpin feeling the need to beg for forgiveness from team RWBY 🤦‍♀️

    • @VenathTehN3RD
      @VenathTehN3RD 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I'm still annoyed with how they handled that revelation with Oz, and how the writers made it clear that they think he's supposed to be in the wrong for lying. Qrow and Ironwood I can at least understand. Ozpin has known them for years, likely decades, so they at least have a solid reason to be upset that he didn't give them the full rundown about their enemy - at this point they've devoted most of their lives to a cause without knowing what they were actually up against. But RWBY/JNPR? He's known them for about two years as of V6. Of that two years, his only interactions with them in the first year were a handful of discussions where he provided them with advice as a teacher (nothing that really allowed him to get to know them as people), and in the second year they spent damn near the entire time completely separated with RWBY/JNPR thinking he was dead. Given how utterly reckless and cocky they tended to be during that time, it'd make sense that he didn't think they were ready to know even if he *did* have every reason to believe they were good people that wouldn't likely be disheartened by the truth. Then when they finally were reunited, it was almost immediately followed up by one of his oldest and most trusted lieutenants being revealed as a traitor, which probably served as a good reminder of why he doesn't just trust that information with any random teenager from his school who says that they're on his side.
I've mentioned it before, but sometimes it seriously feels like the writers flat out forget that just because the audience is following RWBY/JNPR and has seen the things they've done and gotten to know their characters, it doesn't mean that all of the other characters have done the same. Being the protagonists doesn't mean that they've actually given people any reason to trust them in-universe.

I’ve read fanfics where Yang acts more like a big sister to Ruby then this.

Ruby's plan to get Amity up and running to call for help.......... is nullified by her telling the world Ironwood, leader of the worlds strongest army cannot be trusted.
Why would any kingdom in their right mind want to come to Atlas's aid after hearing that!

BTW, not that this would have ever been considered or depicted in the show. Ruby is a kid, talking to the world about something incredible and unbelievable.
Other world leaders could have taken it as a kid who got hold of some comms system somewhere and decided to mess around. Try and cause even more panic with a prank broadcast.
Why should they have taken her seriously and not another head of state like Ironwood.
Why couldn't they have an adult record the message like Maria, Pietro, Willow. Even Klein.
The best person to speak would have been Qrow, (before he was taken into custody of course.) Who fully knows the situation and probably could have articulated it more professionally and convincingly than Ruby. Of course, the writing had him turned into wallowing emo mess so maybe that could have excluded him. He hasn't been the adult in the room since V6.
There is no reference as to when Ruby made the recording. And the events through the end of V7 to the end of V8 was supposed to be less than 2 days.

Take Nora for example if the writers won't to give Nora space to find her self why not have Nora or Rin go with Ruby and her team to the magic Island having Nora on the island with the other girls will give her more time with the girls and maybe give the girls on their rubies team time to interact more with other people AKA people that keeps saying their friends with it would have been cool just to see maybe the boys by themselves with emerald trying to figure out what to do next going or maybe have Ren go to the island and have it where Nora is evacule when she meets different people and she figures herself out without rent there but I think one of the main reasons they had rent stay there and vacuole is he will give Nora a space but he's going to maybe be there with Oscar Moore as he struggles to figure out himself with Oz or maybe he'll be off doing his own thing trying to connect with other people thanks to his semblance leveling up and he'll try to interact with people he never interacted with before who knows I hope they do a Time skip and maybe we'll see the characters change and more interesting way at this point I don't think we really care if team Ruby changes cuz they haven't changed except for maybe Weiss a little bit but other than that I think we all just don't care at this point even if you ship these characters with each other or another side character you really like does anybody really care about team Ruby like they say they do at this point Ruby's basically still the same kid as she was in volume one through three she's grown up maybe like 2% black is just there I don't even remember what her character are originally was cuz when volume 4 hit I just started to hate her after that Yang is also just there and she's just being used for plot when they need somebody to be a heavy hitter and a fight and have random moments that should go to other characters why is this ark feel like it should have had more to it and volume six through eight with tying up everything with her family but it feels like they rushed it and just put bits and pieces of it here and there throughout these past few volumes and say there you go her arcs done I hope they write these characters better in the last two volumes they have at best I think we're maybe getting 12 volumes if we're lucky we'll get 15 cuz it be cool if Ruby and it with 15 volumes cuz it be the age Ruby was when the show started but who knows hell for all I know this s*** could go for 20 volumes I hope not

Honestly, RWBY would be better off without the whole silver eyes stuff. Team RWBY can simply be a team of aspiring huntresses. I don’t really see how either the overarching story or Ruby herself benefits writing-wise from the main character being able to blast away any opponent at will with the literal power of friendship. And the way they’ve dealt with it has just made it worse. They can’t have Ruby be that powerful until a certain point so they ignore it and make Ruby herself completely incompetent. You could go back and cut out everything having to do with silver eyes and the story would actually function better imo.
