The biggest problem is that the writers don't understand the importance of establishing a character's External Conflict (Self vs World), Internal Conflict (Self vs Self), and Ghost (Backstory). They only think of External conflicts and that's why the characters lack depth, because there's barely anything that the characters are struggling with internally that's unique to their specific pasts.
They try that though, yang had ptsd, she wanted blake around when she lost her arm which shows they had a connection and being abandoned sucks which calls back to the mom she's been looking for. Cinder wants power because she was the one always being controlled and tortured I guess. Oscar umm was a farmer and didn't want to do that forever.
@@pumkin610 They gave up on that after Volume 5. They just used Adam (an external conflict) to overshadow an internal conflict between Blake and Yang instead of writing them facing said internal conflict directly.

Honestly, a villain having a generic goal doesn't automatically make them bad, you can give them a really good motivation or you can at the very least make them entertaining. my favorite example for this is Virgil from devil May cry, he also wants nothing but power, except not only is his motivation sound, but he is also extremely entertaining as a character

Cinder and a lot of RWBY in general suffers from the fact that they are stuck in written phase that lacks any depth or purpose. A writers goal is not to just make characters but give life and meaning to them through their motivations and the world around them. When you stop short you end up getting "why are you evil, why do you want power, why do you do the things you do", with the answer being just because or abuse and what people think trauma is and it just gets left there like it explains things.
One wing sliver boy (I can't spell his name) got through trauma world lie to him about his mother and himself , it F up his mind so bad he wants to destroy it , not a perfect movition but it least expian why he becomes evil with Cinder we get nothing 🤷
Cinder's Backstory is pretty much what made me question the writers. Like, ok. Cinder was an orphan, that's fine, maybe treated poorly, but make her a slave? What the fuck?!?! If she was a Faunus it would've made a lot of sense, but she isn't so why is Child Slavery allowed? Especially in a era where advanced and modern technology exist. What would've made sense is to just make her straight up steal from Dio's backstory from Part One. It would've made a lot more sense and atleast have merit to it. There is no need for "sad back story" etc.

The writers took this backstory out of their asses and used every bad thing to make you feel sorry for Cinder. Yeesh, the fact that RWBY is still ongoing despite numerous storytelling and character development issues is a testament to how much of a mess Rooster Teeth is. It's a shame because they had such great potential in the beginning.
Still hate that they call this Cinder's W when they stopped her from getting a Maiden power yet again. They've written themselves into a corner when it comes to Cinder's motivations. If she wins for herself and gets a second power, she's too strong to be beaten. If she keeps losing, she's a joke. She needs a drastic change, but I feel as though the writers think they've done really well and think their course for her is impeccable when it just... isn't, at all

What even IS the plot anymore? This show started 9 YEARS AGO as a high school action show and is now....what? The big bad just keeps wanting the McGuffins that are barely, if ever used. Three of the four main characters have had their side plots settled and the one villain that the writers seem to love has no clear motivation.

What makes it sad is the fact that the writers are honestly proud of what they have wrote like it is a 10/10 masterpiece but in reality it's a mess. I will never forget the day Eddy (one if the story writers) hyped up the chapter featuring Cinder's backstory saying something along the lines of "we are really excited for this" or "you guys are not ready for this week's chapter" only to find out that it was bland, generic and uncreative. To top it all off they missed the whole point of a character's backstory which is to explain their motivations like why are they evil or good or what led them down this road? But some how or some way they will not think was bad writing and that's no surprise when it has been confirmed that Roosterteeth and the RWBY FNDM (or at least the fanatics) don't want to hear anything Negative about their products whether it be critique or pointing out flaws. how are are you supposed to grow as creators of any sort of genre if you are constantly ignoring Criticism? Sonic The Hedgehog's live action movie's Original design is a prime example of criticism being necessary. I was honestly on the verge of dropping RWBY because Volume 8 enraged me that much and part of me still wants to honestly my expectations for Volume 9 are extremely low and speaking personally it might be my last Volume I will ever watch potentially moving forward it is truly sad to see Monty Oum's Legacy being ruined like this. Well with all that being said at least a have RWBY: Ice Queendom to look forward to why? Because Roosterteeth is not in control of the project so the original writers will not mess it up finger crossed it will surpass canon
What makes it more enraging and depressing is that the writers mainly fucking Mikes and Kerry been working on this show since volume 1, and they gotten much worse that it goes beyond just "it was okay before Monty passing". It is as if they have no interest whatsoever and instead doing it out of opportunity.
They hype up their show so much and then it ends up mediocre. Remember when they had that break during the half way point of Volume 8? And Eddy said the first half was the tame part, implying the second half was going to be more wild. Yeah, the second half was even worse than the first half. So many times I watch this show and wonder if CRWBY's in another dimension making a different show. Because I don't get the hype.

My biggest, and the most frustrating problem with RWBY-especially V8-is the sheer laziness in its blatant disregard for its own world, story, and characters. I’m so tired of interesting conflicts being set up, only for them to completely ignore it, fall flat on their faces, or for them to “lol jk, this Deus Ex Machina stops The Big Bad. We totally set that up.” I just want the writing to be good, is that too much to ask?
Salem has been reduced to the same level as Snoke in The Last Jedi. It wouldn’t surprise me if it’s reveled that she’s just a meat suit for like the God of Darkness or something.
That might be an improvement tbh. What about if Cinder is instead the puppet who is self-aware yet unaware of this. Her whole life she wants power to (apparently) set herself free (or whatever) only for it to be revealed that she was only a puppet of a being so vast and incomprehensible that she can't even dream of ever being free. Then have the god of darkness possess and assimilate her as she cursed "I was almost free". Then have Salem shit herself and be made subservient to "Cinder", who wished to finish what he created the Grimm to do, destroy the world. This was because he was pissed that his brother went and recreated humanity behind his back and without him, so as a huge middle finger, he'll destroy everything and (through the relics) create a new world, filled with magic (through the use of the maidens). At least, that's my version. Still flawed but it was a somewhat fun thought experiment for me🤣
She should’ve died in Volume 5, hell her little backstory was meant to be in Volume 5 but wasn’t because of reasons. If that happened it would’ve been all the more reason to kill her off.
For me, one of the most frustrating things about this volume was the character development of cinder. The crying scene could have been really impactful because Cinder spends most of her time posturing, saying cryptic evil things, and seething. The moment where her emotions break and she shows weakness could have been really impactful if she was so embarrassed about crying in front of watts that she lashed out more, broke down harder, cried uglier. If we had gotten a true breakdown that ended in her resolving to take over Salem’s position, that could have been so interesting. Honestly, I think we just need to see Cinder laugh, see her acting “normal”. What’s her interest besides all this? What’s her power for? Does she want to sell sandwiches? She already killed her abusers and doesn’t seem to display any linger PTSD or trauma from that abuse, because she walks right up to Salem and essentially puts her collar back on. Are we going to see Cinder murder Salem at least once? To me, it would make more sense if Cinder, Emerald, and Mercury had been a separate evil group founded on Cinder’s desire for revenge on Ruby. It’s super interesting that we have Yang and Cinder both lose an arm during a conflict and both have strong feelings about Ruby. And really, why does Cinder hate huntsman enough to destroy Beacon? None of her abusers were huntresses and the man who helped free her was a huntsman even if he turned on her eventually. This comment turned into a general ramble about Cinder but it’s hard seeing them develop her character and not give her any other traits aside from “yes I am evil how could you tell was it my brooding tone or the all black or my scary monster hand”
As it stands it seems like Cinder cried because Watts was mean to her, her ego was hurt, she then goes on to make the exact same mistakes she always does but she’s given even more plot armor so she has her little win.

You could face me each day for a thousand years Walter, and I’d tear you apart each time.” Unless they buff Cinder again she should immediately drop when Salem starts screwing with the arm, we’ve seen it she couldn’t do anything until Salem decided to let her stand up.
Cinder could have had Watts Hack the main characters scrolls and spy on them that way. But it seems like they felt so much pressure to use the Final Question in a 'clever' way and get it out of the story, they ignored the ability to think of alternatives. Cinder doesn't even use the inside knowledge to any advantage, she just brute forces it like always but the writers decided she wins this time.
Somethings about Volume 8: Things I liked: Watts getting knocked out by Ironwood’s guards when they came to collect him was hilarious. Nora pressing all the buttons on the elevator was funny. Watts tearing into Cinder for being such a incompetent loser is the greatest thing in the series, not only does it have Watts’s scenery chewing but it also involves Cinder being fucked over which is always satisfying to see. Yang finally, FINALLY talks about Summer and calls her “mom” after so much time. The rest of it: Ruby and the rest went against Ironwood because they felt he was leaving the people of Mantle die so they opt to save them: they spend a majority of the time whining while doing it. Ruby, Weiss and Blake sit around and drink tea and talk about how bad it is out there without actually going to help. Gathering the remaining citizens in Mantle and putting them in the crater is one of the single dumbest ideas ever, the only reason no one died is because Salem was keeping (most) of her forces back, the only Grimm to come through were stragglers and they didn’t even do anything. Ren brings up legitimate points in his argument with Yang, he is then lambasted by the story and painted as “pushing people away”. His talking crap about Jaune was just to there to make him out to be “irrational”. Jaune, Yang or Ren don’t do anything to the hound while it transforms in a attempt to save Oscar, they opt to wait till it’s in the air to try and shoot it down (which is even worse) Yang cares more that Blake of all people would potentially look at her differently for not helping out with Amity, she cares more what her cat girlfriend thinks of her then her own sister. Just a reminder Ruby is the ENTIRE reason she’s still around. The very first thing we see Ironwood do in the season is shoot a innocent man, for no reason, all in the name of showing how “EVIL” he was. I do not give a single solitary damn about Qrow’s angst fest about Clover: HE started the fight on the ground, HE chose to team up with the same murderous mad man that has tried to kill him, his niece, her friends and is just in general a massive psycho and finally HE broke Clover’s aura which allowed Tyrian to sneak up behind him and kill him. They try and give Robyn a sappy backstory due to her semblance but it fails as not only is Robyn completely insufferable but her semblance (as far as I know) isn’t passive like Qrow’s which means she has to chose when and where to use it. Nora’s little self discovery arc doesn’t matter to me, Nora IS nothing but the comic relief who “hits stuff” who pines after Ren, also she never showed such a dependency on Ren before sure they were best friends but it’s not like she was completely incapable of interacting or having relationships with other characters (as few and honestly just kind of “there” they ended up being) The Ace Ops handle themselves fairly well against Penny (a maiden) but they absolutely jobbed against Team RWBY? I’m not buying it, I don’t care what excuses they throw out in the show (them apparently not working together which is invalidated by 1. The mine fight, 2. The fight against Penny), Weiss pulls a blade on Whitley and doesn’t even bother apologizing later, nor does she talk to him about leaving him alone with Willow (a emotionally distant drunk) and Jacque (a asshole). When Yang and Blake reunite Blake (for some reason) cowers in on herself and looks all scared. Why? What have either of them done to warrant such reactions (Yang feeling Blake will think less of her for not helping out with Amity, Blake for closing in on herself) from the other? For all of Volume 7 they had been attached at the hip and save for them talking about Amity before they go to (supposedly) arrest Robyn, they had been nothing but chummy and flirty towards each other. Where is this sudden stand off-ish behavior coming from? Aside from having to pad the runtime with completely unnecessary melodrama. Cinder’s backstory feels like a crappy abused main character fanfic: it’s so over the top (she literally has a shock collar on) it passes tragedy and just comes off as silly (it’s like “Ruins” (a extremely depressing else-world story in Marvel where “everything went wrong”) without the justification of parody (Ruins being a parody of another story called “Marvels”). She isn’t allowed to leave because of reasons, they throw out some vague “you’ll be running for the rest of your life” nonsense but they don’t elaborate on it, it’s just an excuse to keep her there (her evil Stepmother is a hotel owner not some well connected tycoon or crime boss, she was found (I think) at an orphanage, the crazy chick can just adopt another kid to do all the labor). Also apparently Rhodes is the only one to notice or care about her abuse (that I can somewhat buy as (I think) the hotel is in Atlas, where all the rich snooty assholes live). Not only is Cinder’s first instinct to go for the kill when he finds she stole a sword, but he actively trains her how to fight and use deadly weaponry, which she predictably uses to kill her abusers. Nora’s whole “it’s a part of you” sentiment in regards to Penny is really dumb, it was a virus that was slowly killing her. It’s amazing how Ruby whines about the fact help didn’t show up to Atlas when: Atlas is really far away from everything else, Ruby bad mouthed Ironwood (the leader of the military) and painted him as insane and said he can’t be trusted (which would cause a whole slew of negative emotions) and the fact that Salem is there. Why would anyone possibly want to go there? That’s not even getting into general human indecisiveness. And Ruby waited what? A couple hours before she started to have a pity party? Didn’t this volume take place over the course of like two days? There’s no way that much time past between Ruby’s message and her wallowing in the fact her plan failed. Emerald was accepted way, way to easily. Penny’s entire arc about choice is ignored as she was fully willing to sacrifice herself in order to give Ruby the Maiden powers. She never expressed a desire to be human. The entire finale was one massive contrivance all in the name of making Cinder seem like a threat again but it fails because in order for it to happen literally everyone has to be fucked over: Watts and Neo fall for her bullshit, Ruby’s silver eyes don’t activate at any point in time during the final fight even when Cinder (who knows and should be wary of them) continues to blab on like she normally does which would’ve been the perfect opportunity for them to work but they don’t because of reasons (plot), no one can touch her in the final fight, she powers through everyone and her aura doesn’t even flicker. Cinder didn’t “develop” she was just given more plot armor then she normally has. She’s like a character called from Prometheus from a DC comic called “Cry for Justice” the key difference is that Prometheus ends up getting an arrow in his eye and dies. They stupidly bring the staff with them instead of leaving it in the vault which leads to Cinder getting it. Jaune killing Penny was apparently “set up” when he responded to Ren when he was tearing into them for how much they all suck, it’s literally based off one word, it reminds of how the “Hangover part 3” is based off one line from the first one. It’s so awkward. They dump thousands of citizens in the middle of a desert (citizens who all lived in the cold area of Atlas and Mantle), they have no idea where they are, have no supplies and only have a handful of people who can defend them (a few of whom we know are out of power while the rest should be running on fumes or will simply be exhausted by sheer numbers), also Vacuo is a desert shit hole where people have to fight tooth and nail just to continue living. This is the dumbest plan in the series and that’s saying something. Blake is the only one who gets to react to Yang dying, she has time to: run over to the edge of the bridge, try (and fail) to catch Yang, have her little “NOOOO!” moment and then have her little cry, she then gets to show visible anger and goes feral against Neo.
Salem VS Hazel was cool too, Salem's regeneration powers were really well done, and the action was pretty brutal, it's a shame that these small moments of creativity and passion just fall back into the bland gray mess that is 95% of modern RWBY
@@qaztim11 what ruins the fight in retrospect for me is we see that Salem is capable of becoming smoke or whatever, so it stands to reason she could’ve gotten out of Hazel’s grab. But aside from that the fight was still cool.
How the fuck does Cinder have an invincible aura all of a sudden? Spamming her semblance, bravely 😏 on everyone, handle everyone at once without breaking a sweat.

The man Ironwood shot may have been innocent but in RWBY'S world, is anyone really worth saving anymore? The ONLY PEOPLE I can think of is Ren and barely Oscar for the sole fact he was willing to let Emerald join their team, a person who he should know willingly killed thousands of people all for Cinder but because she's afraid for her life... For some reason, he let's her join. Oh yeah and the AceOps, the AceOps are worth saving. Besides Harriet considering she was willing to drop a bomb on people for Clover. Everyone else, shoot em.

Salem is constantly hyped up in universe as this unstoppable big bad (but got manhandled by Hazel) and at every given chance they make Cinder steal the show. If they really want Cinder to be the main villain in the end, why have fans get so invested in Salem’s backstory? Why degrade one character just to make another look good? I can understand if Salem wasn’t that important, but between having the very first lines in the show, having an epic backstory/longest episode, having the main four color schemes in her design, literally having immortality and magic, why in the f*** is Cinder the main antagonist every time?
At this point, I genuinely feel that Cinder is a writer's pet on the show. Look how much screen time she's been getting, especially during volume 8. They keep giving Cinder so much screen time even though most people either don't care for the character, or fucking hate her. She's been on the show for nearly a decade, keeps getting screentime dedicated to "fleshing her out" (even though she has remained static for several volumes), and they still don't know what to do with her. I think they only keep Cinder around because she's a writer's pet, and she's a bigger writer's pet than jaune ever was.

This was my absolute least favorite Volume of the show; rather than just sit and do nothing like in Volume 5, Ruby and her friends were actively the villains in my eyes. I cannot defend a single choice Ruby or the others made, and I'd much rather defend Ironwood instead. I saw Ruby in Volumes 7 and 8 to be naive and childish at best, and downright malicious at worst.

Are you serious? Ironwood was willing to let the entirety of Mantle get destroyed just so he could salvage whatever was left of Atlas. If he truly cared Mantle wouldn’t have gotten as bad as it did. The main cast was trying to save everyone in Atlas including Mantle and you’re telling me that all those innocent people that suffered from discrimination from the higher ups deserved to die?? Not to mention Ironwood was willing to shoot down anyone that disagreed with him

Most people agree that current RWBY is a mess. Cinder started off as a discount Azula, then she degraded into a discount Zuko, and she has very little charisma compared to them. But there is a lot that can be learned from it, and it can make shows like High Guardian Spice look pretty decent in comparison, if only because new shows can provide a breath of fresh air.

It's one thing if you enjoy it BUT you can't deny that the writing itself is a nightmare. Why did they kill off TWO of Salem's faction that had the least amount of development? Why did Ironwood suddenly become a cartoon psychopath and not even have a redeeming moment when he died? Why was Ironwood built up for so long just to not be literally anything? Why did the writers have to confirm that Ironwood and Watts have to be confirmed dead by the writers on a random stream then laugh at the person asking the question? Why did Papa Schnee just get straight up executed? Why is Cinder still less developed and interesting then Tyrian when she is arguably the main antagonist for the majority of the series? Why is Neo just doing whatever the writers want her to do instead of doing what she as a character would actually do? Why did they kill Vine when he could've done the same thing he did except from outside the ship, and why should I care that he died? Why is Salem scary at all aside from being immortal, she literally isn't doing anything? Why are more people not mad at Team RWBY for literally destroying one of the four kingdoms because of their stupid decisions? Why did we spend two entire volumes bringing back Penny then making her human then KILLING HER A SECOND TIME AND MAKING JAUNE DO IT FOR SOME REASON!? I could keep going. The volume is such a train wreck it's unreal. V7 was bad but it at least had a few redeemable moments with the fights. This volume didn't even have any impressive fight scenes, which is insane because this was a volume with all of these characters in one place together and no interesting fights even happened, and the fights we did get were average at best.
Cinder didn't really win. It wasn't earned because the writers suddenly made RWBY so weak and slow. My god...one hit from Ice cream hair girl not only broke Yang's aura, but knocked her unconscious. Like compare the Yang from the Yellow trailer to the Yang that fought Cinder on the golden floating bridges. How is past Yang somehow stronger than old and "experienced" Yang?

Like, they didn't really gave her something to do, so she just retreated to a castle in the middle of nowhere and started working with a very small team of lackeys. Spot on video as usual. Though I felt the writers were really pushing for Ironwood to be Salem's stand-in for big bad in V8. The classic bait and switch. (Perhaps Jen Taylor was just too big an expense to retain for any great length of time. She may charge by the syllable. I doubt Ironwood or Cinder's VA are as expensive.) They attempted some fake sob backstory as well as tears from Watts's verbal spanking in order to feign some kind sorrow or redeemability for Cinder. Despite V7 railroading Ironwood in the role of a big bad, he got no such sympathy or breaks from the writers. So this may have been Cinder's volume, but most of the focus and narratives were on making everything Ironwood's fault. imho

I just hope they don't totally nerf Salem in the process. (Actually she already was nerfed in V8. While making Cinder this totally unstoppable force by the end of the volume). In regards to this video, Alan Moore of Watchman fame has stated that terrible books can be just as inspiring if not more so than good books. Yeah this was a bad volume for Weiss. Best girl - no more. She had the best character develop of any of the girls of team Ruby. Only to have it trashed in V8.

This volume really hurt my interest in the show. I thought the story and characters would become better when RT hired new writers, because Miles and Kerry are pretty bad at it, but it only became worse. They ruined Ironwood, made Cinder even worse, let Salem do nothing, made RWBY stupid and passive for the sake of the plot, tried to make Ren and Nora relevant with no pay off, brought Penny back only so that she could die again and develop Winter as a character, forced the cast and plot to move to Vacuo for stupid reasons. Even many of RWBY's most loyal fans had big issues with the volume. Volume 9 needs to be at least decent, especially with how long it's been in development now.

Listening to the commentary is the worst thing you can do. If you do so, you realize that somehow despite writing the show, the writers are watching a completely different show. It's like the commentary is made for the first draft or something.
Even though I believe that scene where Watts's rips Cinder is the best in the entire volume, sadly it was used to give Watts a moment of glory before killing him off. Just like with Hazel. I think Qrow's time is coming real soon.

Yep, that is pretty much it. The very next episode it was back to business as usual for Cinder. While Watts, since his moment of awesome is done, is killed off by being made 'stupid for plot'. Pretty much the standard formula for killing off a male character in this show. They usually end up sacrificing themselves or just doing something stupid that gets them killed because they are too Emo, Obsessive, Jealous, Crazy, or become just plain idiots. Qrow has most of those ingredients now so his number is about up. He still has to get is moment of awesome first though. I am guessing in a fight against Tyrian. They probably end up killing each other.
RWBY was at it's best when the main characters were written as young, talented, yet inexperienced fighters that often times lucked out their wins. Neither Team RWBY nor Team JNPR should have been shown to go toe to toe with any full Huntsmen or Ace Op until the final season of the story. When RWBY and JNPR are able to overpower the Ace Ops and other Huntsmen it lessens the achievements of the characters by showing that their adversaries were never threatening to begin with. The whole show just feels like it's gone past the natural ending point. The Fall of Beacon should have been the beginning of the ending of the story arc. Instead of having to completely defeat Salem this story, they should have had a clear goal that Salem wanted to accomplish. That should've been something that RWBY could stop, and end the story with Salem being driven back yet not completely defeated. Instead now Team RWBY has to deal with literal Gods? In the first story of this universe? Why? You could do so much with this world and you've immediately made the main antagonist on a similar power scaling as the Gods of the world. It's like they're taking writing cues from Dragonball.
This really was the worst Volume of the show, which I hate saying because I LOVED the show before this. Seriously, Volume 7 had SO much going for it, especially the threat of Salem on the horizon (literally), and the moral dilemma set up between two HEROS, Ruby and Ironwood. Then V8 threw it all out the window for... reasons? It just gets me so frustrated because RWBY was SO CLOSE to being great, but it fumbled so dang hard, and now I think the main cast is beyond redemption :(

Just a clear sign that they have no idea how to spend their money PROPERLY. Jen and Jessica are both amazing voice actresses IMO but Jen’s character should not be constantly shafted so Jessica’s can take the spotlight. Every volume has been her volume already. Honestly, nothing wrOng with her wanting more power to be sure to not getting hurt ever again. The issue is mainly her first introduction as this badass and calm lady who can pretty much get away with anything because she knows how to get things done. But then they decide she s just a crybaby who don't know how to learn. Makes you wonder how she even became the person she was between her backstory and her first intro.
Yeah you bring up a solid point. For a massive chunk of the series we’re never privy to her insecurities, she isn’t shown to be getting power to better protect herself against the cruel world. Hell, she fought pretty well without maiden powers and remained all calm and mwahaha evil. She has emotion in v4 which would have been a better place to insert her nonsensical backstory but they did it a lot too late.
Salem is a placeholder. She’s just presented as the big bad until Cinder replaces her. The only villains we got left all suck and are written poorly. So yeah only thing that can save it is if they really write someone good like you know Ruby. But idk how they do it. Everything has been written so unlikeable and characters overstayed their welcome. I didn’t hate it all but none of it makes sense anymore. Who do you really root for? The trash villains or the trash heroes.

A crux of the show's problems is that there's too many characters. So many of them get shafted or have their personalities retconned because the writers don't know WTF to do with them. Penny and Neo did not need to come back to this bloated cast, and a ton of characters need to either die or get put on a bus for any chance of a narrative where the interactions really mean something.
This is the volume that made me drop the show, for a lot of reasons people have already said but also for what they did to penny....warning this will probably be a rant sorry in advance. Penny was one of my favourite characters because she was fun, kind and had a lot of charm. I'm autistic and i know penny wasn't confirmed autistic but characters are never confirmed autistic so you always have to just deal with it, but i related to penny with not feeling normal i know what it's like trying to be someone you're not i lost seven years of my life trying to do that, so when ruby said "you think just because you have nuts and bolts instead of squishy guts that makes you any less real than me?, you've got a heart and a soul, i can feel it." that felt so great.....but they spat all over that (Honestly nuts and dolts would've had great potential). When they killed her the first time yeah that stung but when they brought her back i was really happy......then she got a virus and had to be fixed...of course of FUCKING COURSE SHE HAS TO BE FIXED AND THEN THEY FUCKING KILL HER AGAIN!!....why do we always need fixed? why did i have my hopes up. Penny will always be a character i love and i'll always hate what they did to her.
As an autistic person I also found Penny to be relatable. Also I hate how they made her human, especially after the moment that Penny and Nora had about the virus only being a part of her.
What I think would been interesting if she were a faunus. But had her trait. (Ears,tail) cut off so customers wouldn't complain about a dirty faunus serving them food or cleaning.
Modern RWBY feels soulless. While the first 3 felt like they were trying to find their way and have some fun, the volumes past feel empty and hollow and only there to see how much they can milk the series. People woke up more in Volume 5 to its problems and it seems like Vol 8 is doing the same. At this point the series needs to end. The longer it goes, they are gonna run out of whatever luck they have.

The only reason I’m only slightly bemused at Ice Queendom is because of one thing: Volumes 7 and 8 *SHOULD’VE* been *_WEISS’_* volumes! We are back in Atlas, she gained the most development as a character in the team, has massive family issues to finally confront & make amends for head-on…and she gets… *NOTHING?!?!* Her arc was so mishandled because of the worthless Robyn/James Targaeryan/Penny/Cinder circus that her whole character was just a massive afterthought. I still believe she should’ve become the new Winter Maiden instead of her appropriately-named sister; at least then she would have a sliver of relevance that didn’t begin and end with “Name in the title” 😒

It’s like their plot armor fluctuates from scene to scene and with how much of it they gave to Cinder at the end plus Weiss’s jobbing nature should’ve immediately had her be bodied. She only lasted so long so Jaune could very slowly kill Penny, it’s like a scene from Austin Powers where a guard shouts “NOOOOO!” as a steam roller very slowly makes its way towards him.

Your counterpoint over her fan-assumed motivations is pretty weak. The real issue with Cinder wanting power for guaranteed freedom is that we only have two dots to connect for that, and nothing throughout the show to show that trauma and insecurity. You could make a control-freak character place themselves into servitude and have it make sense if that's the only way they think they can achieve their goals. Having it turn abusive would connect to the backstory, which then would set up for an alternative outcome for the character to learn something new or resolve their arc. A shame the writers are somehow lobotomites when working on this show.

Ironically enough, Arnold does acknowledge the show's fault, he just plays it up to keep things interesting and engaging. He's actually pretty good outside of RWBY.

Absolutely terrible. If you want decent RWBY content, read fanfiction, it's literally better than the show.

I still, for the life of me, cannot figure out just what the hell Cinder actually wants or plans to do once she gets the Maidens power. Does she want to rule her own kingdom? The fear or respect of everyone around her? More freedom? Purpose? What the hell is it? Because right now, any and all of these choices are actively denied by the power she’s well aware of; The fucking immortal by the name of Salem. In fact, now that I think about it, Cinder hasn’t been competent since the early volumes. It’s just that Ruby and the gang are so incompetent that she could literally walk in a do whatever she wanted.
I theorise that she plans on swiping the Relics from under Salem's nose once she has all the powers, then hopes to be able to do something about her once she has all of that power at her disposal. But the key word is theorise. All we can do is guess, because the show isn't giving an inch.

Cinder from chapter one till now has gotten way more focus that the “big bad” just doesn’t get. They teased Salem finally making a personal move and showing what shes made of, yet M&K insist this is “Cinder’s volume” Give me a break

Missed your content Vex, i hope you are going to keep following the dumpsterfire that will be volume 9. To paraphrase celtic pheonix and fatmanfalling "in modern RWBY only the current scene is canon" i feel like this statement explains most of the issues with the current direction of the show. At least we have the shaft anime to look forward too, it will be impossible for it to be worse than RWBY proper, and they actually have competent writers and staff.
I've said this before but I'll bring it up again In the pilot series for Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, House of Bloo, a bratty girl wanted to adopt Bloo only for Wilt, Coco and Eduardo to stop her from doing so. Unfortunately they all got in each other's way without until the end. The difference between that and this? That scene was played for a joke.....
Rwby at this point is legit dying. And I honestly don't care at this point, the show used to be famous but now we are seeing the signs that it's fading into obscurity. The show should have ended a while ago, the fact that it continues is a testament that we still want to see something good. Yet constantly I am met with disappointment with the writers on the decisions they continue making, there was legit some good idea's interesting concepts which means on some level there was something they wanted to tell. Instead, we have shitty writing, inconsistent rules, and Inconsistent characters. If they weren't so busy trying to make that Bumblebee ship happen, maybe the story would have been better. It pisses me off that the show started great and slowly begin to dissolve away. I know I'm just ranting but I just want to say it. The Characters are all over the place, back then during the original 3 volumes we felt a connection with these characters, their motivations, their reasonings the stuff that makes them so relatable. For instance, let's choose someone, like the Main character Ruby on what this show was based on. She's relatable because she represents the young teenager just realizing how big the world is, then knowing that she's socially awkward and she has trouble making new friends, we also know that in some way she likes to tinker and build and has a profound love for weapons when her team is made she's first met with the dilemma of becoming a leader that being scolded harshly by Weiss. Which gives her motivation on trying to become the leader her team needs her to be. Here are some other examples. Yang, we learn that Yang is the older Half-sister of ruby, she has a temper problem which leads her to problems. She has a quirky positive attitude we know that she likes to brawl when given the chance. We also know that she loves her sister with a passion. We get to learn that her original mother has abandoned both her and her father and when given the chance I assume the original idea was to graduate from beacon and then begin her search with her friends. Blake, we learn that she's secretly a Faunus with a dark history in her background, we know she like social distance on some level, and we know that she likes porn novels and other forms of smut. She tries to start her life over after running away from the group she once supported and worked with the cost was that she left her family behind in the process, soon she finds her goal, that being wanting to change the white fang into a peaceful group despite the large damage they've done and also wanting peace between humans and Faunus. Weiss. We learn that she is a Heiress of a company her family owns, we learn that she's arrogant yet skilled in fencing, and we know that she's quite intelligent. She has a problem with the White fang because of the crimes they've committed and probably other stuff that we don't about, we don't know her exact goal but we know that she wants to be good friends with Ruby and also help guide the young reaper to some extent, while also making herself a better person. These are the stuff that made us connected to them in the first place, they have such a huge potential that years later this would have been considered a classic. Yet here we are now, characters I don't recognize anymore, Character growth all over the place, no consequences shown at all, and the story they are trying to show is in shambles. Such a shame honestly.
The end of volume 8 was a time travel plot So volume 9 is gona be the birth of Huntsmen or Ruby teaching silver eye warriors how to use their power, why if she cant use it rigth? character development or some dum reason, so she can "shine" as a protagonist
Ironically, I had plans of making Cinder a Faunus in a fanfic to fill her in as Ruby's big bad wolf lol. But in all honestly, Cinder is nothing but a cartoon Villain. She was better in the first 3 volumes and she was bland back then, Now she's just a paper cut cartoon villain, She has no dimensions.
The biggest problem is that the writers don't understand the importance of establishing a character's External Conflict (Self vs World), Internal Conflict (Self vs Self), and Ghost (Backstory). They only think of External conflicts and that's why the characters lack depth, because there's barely anything that the characters are struggling with internally that's unique to their specific pasts.
They try that though, yang had ptsd, she wanted blake around when she lost her arm which shows they had a connection and being abandoned sucks which calls back to the mom she's been looking for. Cinder wants power because she was the one always being controlled and tortured I guess. Oscar umm was a farmer and didn't want to do that forever.

Honestly, a villain having a generic goal doesn't automatically make them bad, you can give them a really good motivation or you can at the very least make them entertaining. my favorite example for this is Virgil from devil May cry, he also wants nothing but power, except not only is his motivation sound, but he is also extremely entertaining as a character

Cinder and a lot of RWBY in general suffers from the fact that they are stuck in written phase that lacks any depth or purpose. A writers goal is not to just make characters but give life and meaning to them through their motivations and the world around them. When you stop short you end up getting "why are you evil, why do you want power, why do you do the things you do", with the answer being just because or abuse and what people think trauma is and it just gets left there like it explains things.

Cinder's Backstory is pretty much what made me question the writers.
Like, ok. Cinder was an orphan, that's fine, maybe treated poorly, but make her a slave? What the fuck?!?! If she was a Faunus it would've made a lot of sense, but she isn't so why is Child Slavery allowed? Especially in a era where advanced and modern technology exist. What would've made sense is to just make her straight up steal from Dio's backstory from Part One. It would've made a lot more sense and atleast have merit to it. There is no need for "sad back story" etc.

They've written themselves into a corner when it comes to Cinder's motivations. If she wins for herself and gets a second power, she's too strong to be beaten. If she keeps losing, she's a joke.

What makes it sad is the fact that the writers are honestly proud of what they have wrote like it is a 10/10 masterpiece but in reality it's a mess. I will never forget the day Eddy (one if the story writers) hyped up the chapter featuring Cinder's backstory saying something along the lines of "we are really excited for this" or "you guys are not ready for this week's chapter" only to find out that it was bland, generic and uncreative. To top it all off they missed the whole point of a character's backstory which is to explain their motivations like why are they evil or good or what led them down this road? But some how or some way they will not think was bad writing and that's no surprise when it has been confirmed that Roosterteeth and the RWBY FNDM (or at least the fanatics) don't want to hear anything Negative about their products whether it be critique or pointing out flaws. how are are you supposed to grow as creators of any sort of genre if you are constantly ignoring Criticism? Sonic The Hedgehog's live action movie's Original design is a prime example of criticism being necessary. I was honestly on the verge of dropping RWBY because Volume 8 enraged me that much and part of me still wants to honestly my expectations for Volume 9 are extremely low and speaking personally it might be my last Volume I will ever watch potentially moving forward it is truly sad to see Monty Oum's Legacy being ruined like this. Well with all that being said at least a have RWBY: Ice Queendom to look forward to why? What makes it more enraging and depressing is that the writers mainly fucking Mikes and Kerry been working on this show since volume 1, and they gotten much worse that it goes beyond just "it was okay before Monty passing". It is as if they have no interest whatsoever and instead doing it out of opportunity.
They hype up their show so much and then it ends up mediocre. Remember when they had that break during the half way point of Volume 8? And Eddy said the first half was the tame part, implying the second half was going to be more wild. Yeah, the second half was even worse than the first half. I’m so tired of interesting conflicts being set up, only for them to completely ignore it, fall flat on their faces, or for them to “lol jk, this Deus Ex Machina stops The Big Bad. We totally set that up.” I just want the writing to be good, is that too much to ask?

Then have the god of darkness possess and assimilate her as she cursed "I was almost free". Then have Salem shit herself and be made subservient to "Cinder", who wished to finish what he created the Grimm to do, destroy the world. This was because he was pissed that his brother went and recreated humanity behind his back and without him, so as a huge middle finger, he'll destroy everything and (through the relics) create a new world, filled with magic (through the use of the maidens).
At least, that's my version. Still flawed but it was a somewhat fun thought experiment for me🤣

Caring about RWBY is hard after watching Arcane.
For me, one of the most frustrating things about this volume was the character development of cinder. The crying scene could have been really impactful because Cinder spends most of her time posturing, saying cryptic evil things, and seething. The moment where her emotions break and she shows weakness could have been really impactful if she was so embarrassed about crying in front of watts that she lashed out more, broke down harder, cried uglier. If we had gotten a true breakdown that ended in her resolving to take over Salem’s position, that could have been so interesting. Honestly, I think we just need to see Cinder laugh, see her acting “normal”. What’s her interest besides all this? What’s her power for? Does she want to sell sandwiches? She already killed her abusers and doesn’t seem to display any linger PTSD or trauma from that abuse, because she walks right up to Salem and essentially puts her collar back on. Are we going to see Cinder murder Salem at least once? To me, it would make more sense if Cinder, Emerald, and Mercury had been a separate evil group founded on Cinder’s desire for revenge on Ruby. It’s super interesting that we have Yang and Cinder both lose an arm during a conflict and both have strong feelings about Ruby. And really, why does Cinder hate huntsman enough to destroy Beacon? None of her abusers were huntresses and the man who helped free her was a huntsman even if he turned on her eventually. This comment turned into a general ramble about Cinder but it’s hard seeing them develop her character and not give her any other traits aside from “yes I am evil how could you tell was it my brooding tone or the all black or my scary monster hand”
As it stands it seems like Cinder cried because Watts was mean to her, her ego was hurt, she then goes on to make the exact same mistakes she always does but she’s given even more plot armor so she has her little win.
Hopefully Cinder has enough brain cells left to realize that Salem would absolutely slap her the instant she tries to overthrow her.

I dropped rwby from early volume 6 and it’s still going. I gotta it props for being bad and still surviving.
Cinder could have had Watts Hack the main characters scrolls and spy on them that way. But it seems like they felt so much pressure to use the Final Question in a 'clever' way and get it out of the story, they ignored the ability to think of alternatives. Cinder doesn't even use the inside knowledge to any advantage, she just brute forces it like always but the writers decided she wins this time.

Things I liked:
Watts getting knocked out by Ironwood’s guards when they came to collect him was hilarious.
Nora pressing all the buttons on the elevator was funny.
Watts tearing into Cinder for being such a incompetent loser is the greatest thing in the series, not only does it have Watts’s scenery chewing but it also involves Cinder being fucked over which is always satisfying to see.
Yang finally, FINALLY talks about Summer and calls her “mom” after so much time.
The rest of it:
Ruby and the rest went against Ironwood because they felt he was leaving the people of Mantle die so they opt to save them: they spend a majority of the time whining while doing it. Ruby, Weiss and Blake sit around and drink tea and talk about how bad it is out there without actually going to help.
Gathering the remaining citizens in Mantle and putting them in the crater is one of the single dumbest ideas ever, the only reason no one died is because Salem was keeping (most) of her forces back, the only Grimm to come through were stragglers and they didn’t even do anything.
Ren brings up legitimate points in his argument with Yang, he is then lambasted by the story and painted as “pushing people away”. His talking crap about Jaune was just to there to make him out to be “irrational”.
Jaune, Yang or Ren don’t do anything to the hound while it transforms in a attempt to save Oscar, they opt to wait till it’s in the air to try and shoot it down (which is even worse)
Yang cares more that Blake of all people would potentially look at her differently for not helping out with Amity, she cares more what her cat girlfriend thinks of her then her own sister. Just a reminder Ruby is the ENTIRE reason she’s still around.
The very first thing we see Ironwood do in the season is shoot a innocent man, for no reason, all in the name of showing how “EVIL” he was.
I do not give a single solitary damn about Qrow’s angst fest about Clover: HE started the fight on the ground, HE chose to team up with the same murderous mad man that has tried to kill him, his niece, her friends and is just in general a massive psycho and finally HE broke Clover’s aura which allowed Tyrian to sneak up behind him and kill him.
They try and give Robyn a sappy backstory due to her semblance but it fails as not only is Robyn completely insufferable but her semblance (as far as I know) isn’t passive like Qrow’s which means she has to chose when and where to use it.
Nora’s little self discovery arc doesn’t matter to me, Nora IS nothing but the comic relief who “hits stuff” who pines after Ren, also she never showed such a dependency on Ren before sure they were best friends but it’s not like she was completely incapable of interacting or having relationships with other characters (as few and honestly just kind of “there” they ended up being)
The Ace Ops handle themselves fairly well against Penny (a maiden) but they absolutely jobbed against Team RWBY? I’m not buying it, I don’t care what excuses they throw out in the show (them apparently not working together which is invalidated by 1. The mine fight, 2. The fight against Penny),
Weiss pulls a blade on Whitley and doesn’t even bother apologizing later, nor does she talk to him about leaving him alone with Willow (a emotionally distant drunk) and Jacque (a asshole).
When Yang and Blake reunite Blake (for some reason) cowers in on herself and looks all scared. Why? What have either of them done to warrant such reactions (Yang feeling Blake will think less of her for not helping out with Amity, Blake for closing in on herself) from the other? For all of Volume 7 they had been attached at the hip and save for them talking about Amity before they go to (supposedly) arrest Robyn, they had been nothing but chummy and flirty towards each other. Where is this sudden stand off-ish behavior coming from? Aside from having to pad the runtime with completely unnecessary melodrama.
Cinder’s backstory feels like a crappy abused main character fanfic: it’s so over the top (she literally has a shock collar on) it passes tragedy and just comes off as silly (it’s like “Ruins” (a extremely depressing else-world story in Marvel where “everything went wrong”) without the justification of parody (Ruins being a parody of another story called “Marvels”).
She isn’t allowed to leave because of reasons, they throw out some vague “you’ll be running for the rest of your life” nonsense but they don’t elaborate on it, it’s just an excuse to keep her there (her evil Stepmother is a hotel owner not some well connected tycoon or crime boss, she was found (I think) at an orphanage, the crazy chick can just adopt another kid to do all the labor).
Also apparently Rhodes is the only one to notice or care about her abuse (that I can somewhat buy as (I think) the hotel is in Atlas, where all the rich snooty assholes live). Not only is Cinder’s first instinct to go for the kill when he finds she stole a sword, but he actively trains her how to fight and use deadly weaponry, which she predictably uses to kill her abusers.
Nora’s whole “it’s a part of you” sentiment in regards to Penny is really dumb, it was a virus that was slowly killing her.
It’s amazing how Ruby whines about the fact help didn’t show up to Atlas when: Atlas is really far away from everything else, Ruby bad mouthed Ironwood (the leader of the military) and painted him as insane and said he can’t be trusted (which would cause a whole slew of negative emotions) and the fact that Salem is there. Why would anyone possibly want to go there? That’s not even getting into general human indecisiveness. And Ruby waited what? A couple hours before she started to have a pity party? Didn’t this volume take place over the course of like two days? There’s no way that much time past between Ruby’s message and her wallowing in the fact her plan failed.
Emerald was accepted way, way to easily.
Penny’s entire arc about choice is ignored as she was fully willing to sacrifice herself in order to give Ruby the Maiden powers. She never expressed a desire to be human.
The entire finale was one massive contrivance all in the name of making Cinder seem like a threat again but it fails because in order for it to happen literally everyone has to be fucked over: Watts and Neo fall for her bullshit, Ruby’s silver eyes don’t activate at any point in time during the final fight even when Cinder (who knows and should be wary of them) continues to blab on like she normally does which would’ve been the perfect opportunity for them to work but they don’t because of reasons (plot), no one can touch her in the final fight, she powers through everyone and her aura doesn’t even flicker. Cinder didn’t “develop” she was just given more plot armor then she normally has. She’s like a character called from Prometheus from a DC comic called “Cry for Justice” the key difference is that Prometheus ends up getting an arrow in his eye and dies.
They stupidly bring the staff with them instead of leaving it in the vault which leads to Cinder getting it.
Jaune killing Penny was apparently “set up” when he responded to Ren when he was tearing into them for how much they all suck, it’s literally based off one word, it reminds of how the “Hangover part 3” is based off one line from the first one. It’s so awkward.
They dump thousands of citizens in the middle of a desert (citizens who all lived in the cold area of Atlas and Mantle), they have no idea where they are, have no supplies and only have a handful of people who can defend them (a few of whom we know are out of power while the rest should be running on fumes or will simply be exhausted by sheer numbers), also Vacuo is a desert shit hole where people have to fight tooth and nail just to continue living. This is the dumbest plan in the series and that’s saying something.
Blake is the only one who gets to react to Yang dying, she has time to: run over to the edge of the bridge, try (and fail) to catch Yang, have her little “NOOOO!” moment and then have her little cry, she then gets to show visible anger and goes feral against Neo.
Salem VS Hazel was cool too, Salem's regeneration powers were really well done, and the action was pretty brutal, it's a shame that these small moments of creativity and passion just fall back into the bland gray mess that is 95% of modern RWBY
@@qaztim11 what ruins the fight in retrospect for me is we see that Salem is capable of becoming smoke or whatever, so it stands to reason she could’ve gotten out of Hazel’s grab. But aside from that the fight was still cool.
How the fuck does Cinder have an invincible aura all of a sudden? Spamming her semblance, bravely 😏 on everyone, handle everyone at once without breaking a sweat.

The man Ironwood shot may have been innocent but in RWBY'S world, is anyone really worth saving anymore? The ONLY PEOPLE I can think of is Ren and barely Oscar for the sole fact he was willing to let Emerald join their team, a person who he should know willingly killed thousands of people all for Cinder but because she's afraid for her life... For some reason, he let's her join. Oh yeah and the AceOps, the AceOps are worth saving. Besides Harriet considering she was willing to drop a bomb on people for Clover. Everyone else, shoot em.
You see the biggest problem with Cinder is : Salem. Salem is constantly hyped up in universe as this unstoppable big bad (but got manhandled by Hazel) and at every given chance they make Cinder steal the show. If they really want Cinder to be the main villain in the end, why have fans get so invested in Salem’s backstory? Why degrade one character just to make another look good?
I can understand if Salem wasn’t that important, but between having the very first lines in the show, having an epic backstory/longest episode, having the main four color schemes in her design, literally having immortality and magic, why in the f*** is Cinder the main antagonist every time?
I hate it when a show or whatever makes a character/characters look bad all in the name of making another look cool.

At this point, I genuinely feel that Cinder is a writer's pet on the show. Look how much screen time she's been getting, especially during volume 8. They keep giving Cinder so much screen time even though most people either don't care for the character, or fucking hate her. She's been on the show for nearly a decade, keeps getting screentime dedicated to "fleshing her out" (even though she has remained static for several volumes), and they still don't know what to do with her. I think they only keep Cinder around because she's a writer's pet, and she's a bigger writer's pet than jaune ever was.

This was my absolute least favorite Volume of the show; rather than just sit and do nothing like in Volume 5, Ruby and her friends were actively the villains in my eyes. I cannot defend a single choice Ruby or the others made, and I'd much rather defend Ironwood instead. I saw Ruby in Volumes 7 and 8 to be naive and childish at best, and downright malicious at worst.

didn't say they should be left to die and I knew Ruby would find a plan to save everyone but Ironwood didn't hate the people in the mantle he pressured them to complete the Amity Tower to unite the world but with Salem coming and no longer having time to save everyone he decided to save what could be saved when Oscar came to him, he screamed at Oscar, showing the amount of pressure he was subjected to, but in the end, Oscar compared him to Salem, and this was the breaking point, but for some reason he wanted to kill everyone in the eighth volume, and this is outside the scope of his character. Most people agree that current RWBY is a mess.
Cinder started off as a discount Azula, then she degraded into a discount Zuko, and she has very little charisma compared to them.
But there is a lot that can be learned from it, and it can make shows like High Guardian Spice look pretty decent in comparison, if only because new shows can provide a breath of fresh air.

I genuinely don't understand how people can try to defend V8. It's one thing if you enjoy it BUT you can't deny that the writing itself is a nightmare. Why did they kill off TWO of Salem's faction that had the least amount of development? Why did Ironwood suddenly become a cartoon psychopath and not even have a redeeming moment when he died? Why was Ironwood built up for so long just to not be literally anything? Why did the writers have to confirm that Ironwood and Watts have to be confirmed dead by the writers on a random stream then laugh at the person asking the question? Why did Papa Schnee just get straight up executed? Why is Cinder still less developed and interesting then Tyrian when she is arguably the main antagonist for the majority of the series? Why is Neo just doing whatever the writers want her to do instead of doing what she as a character would actually do? Why did they kill Vine when he could've done the same thing he did except from outside the ship, and why should I care that he died? Why is Salem scary at all aside from being immortal, she literally isn't doing anything? Why are more people not mad at Team RWBY for literally destroying one of the four kingdoms because of their stupid decisions? Why did we spend two entire volumes bringing back Penny then making her human then KILLING HER A SECOND TIME AND MAKING JAUNE DO IT FOR SOME REASON!?
I could keep going. The volume is such a train wreck it's unreal. V7 was bad but it at least had a few redeemable moments with the fights. This volume didn't even have any impressive fight scenes, which is insane because this was a volume with all of these characters in one place together and no interesting fights even happened, and the fights we did get were average at best.

Also, I was thinking back about Salem's backstory, and isn't it odd how she defeated Ozma in combat and just kinda gave up. Like, they didn't really gave her something to do, so she just retreated to a castle in the middle of nowhere and started working with a very small team of lackeys.
It's like if Thanos got the Infinity Stones after beating the Avengers and decided to just go sit on his ship.

Though I felt the writers were really pushing for Ironwood to be Salem's stand-in for big bad in V8. The classic bait and switch. (Perhaps Jen Taylor was just too big an expense to retain for any great length of time. She may charge by the syllable. I doubt Ironwood or Cinder's VA are as expensive.)
They attempted some fake sob backstory as well as tears from Watts's verbal spanking in order to feign some kind sorrow or redeemability for Cinder.
Despite V7 railroading Ironwood in the role of a big bad, he got no such sympathy or breaks from the writers. So this may have been Cinder's volume, but most of the focus and narratives were on making everything Ironwood's fault.

This volume really hurt my interest in the show. I thought the story and characters would become better when RT hired new writers, because Miles and Kerry are pretty bad at it, but it only became worse. They ruined Ironwood, made Cinder even worse, let Salem do nothing, made RWBY stupid and passive for the sake of the plot, tried to make Ren and Nora relevant with no pay off, brought Penny back only so that she could die again and develop Winter as a character, forced the cast and plot to move to Vacuo for stupid reasons. Even many of RWBY's most loyal fans had big issues with the volume. Volume 9 needs to be at least decent, especially with how long it's been in development now.
The more the writers with little cohesive thinking increase, the messier it gets.

Listening to the commentary is the worst thing you can do. If you do so, you realize that somehow despite writing the show, the writers are watching a completely different show. It's like the commentary is made for the first draft or something.

Pretty much the standard formula for killing off a male character in this show. They usually end up sacrificing themselves or just doing something stupid that gets them killed because they are too Emo, Obsessive, Jealous, Crazy, or become just plain idiots.
Qrow has most of those ingredients now so his number is about up. He still has to get is moment of awesome first though.
I am guessing in a fight against Tyrian. They probably end up killing each other.
RWBY was at it's best when the main characters were written as young, talented, yet inexperienced fighters that often times lucked out their wins. Neither Team RWBY nor Team JNPR should have been shown to go toe to toe with any full Huntsmen or Ace Op until the final season of the story.
When RWBY and JNPR are able to overpower the Ace Ops and other Huntsmen it lessens the achievements of the characters by showing that their adversaries were never threatening to begin with.
The whole show just feels like it's gone past the natural ending point.
The Fall of Beacon should have been the beginning of the ending of the story arc. Instead of having to completely defeat Salem this story, they should have had a clear goal that Salem wanted to accomplish. That should've been something that RWBY could stop, and end the story with Salem being driven back yet not completely defeated. Instead now Team RWBY has to deal with literal Gods? In the first story of this universe? Why? You could do so much with this world and you've immediately made the main antagonist on a similar power scaling as the Gods of the world. It's like they're taking writing cues from Dragonball.
This really was the worst Volume of the show, which I hate saying because I LOVED the show before this. Seriously, Volume 7 had SO much going for it, especially the threat of Salem on the horizon (literally), and the moral dilemma set up between two HEROS, Ruby and Ironwood. Then V8 threw it all out the window for... reasons? It just gets me so frustrated because RWBY was SO CLOSE to being great, but it fumbled so dang hard, and now I think the main cast is beyond redemption :(

Yeah you bring up a solid point. For a massive chunk of the series we’re never privy to her insecurities, she isn’t shown to be getting power to better protect herself against the cruel world. Hell, she fought pretty well without maiden powers and remained all calm and mwahaha evil. She has emotion in v4 which would have been a better place to insert her nonsensical backstory but they did it a lot too late.

Salem is a placeholder. She’s just presented as the big bad until Cinder replaces her. The only villains we got left all suck and are written poorly. So yeah only thing that can save it is if they really write someone good like you know Ruby. But idk how they do it. Everything has been written so unlikeable and characters overstayed their welcome. I didn’t hate it all but none of it makes sense anymore. Who do you really root for? The trash villains or the trash heroes.

A crux of the show's problems is that there's too many characters. So many of them get shafted or have their personalities retconned because the writers don't know WTF to do with them. Penny and Neo did not need to come back to this bloated cast, and a ton of characters need to either die or get put on a bus for any chance of a narrative where the interactions really mean something.

This is the volume that made me drop the show, for a lot of reasons people have already said but also for what they did to penny....warning this will probably be a rant sorry in advance.
Penny was one of my favourite characters because she was fun, kind and had a lot of charm. I'm autistic and i know penny wasn't confirmed autistic but characters are never confirmed autistic so you always have to just deal with it, but i related to penny with not feeling normal i know what it's like trying to be someone you're not i lost seven years of my life trying to do that, so when ruby said "you think just because you have nuts and bolts instead of squishy guts that makes you any less real than me?, you've got a heart and a soul, i can feel it." that felt so great.....but they spat all over that (Honestly nuts and dolts would've had great potential). When they killed her the first time yeah that stung but when they brought her back i was really happy......then she got a virus and had to be fixed...of course of FUCKING COURSE SHE HAS TO BE FIXED AND THEN THEY FUCKING KILL HER AGAIN!!....why do we always need fixed? why did i have my hopes up. Penny will always be a character i love and i'll always hate what they did to her.
As an autistic person I also found Penny to be relatable. Also I hate how they made her human, especially after the moment that Penny and Nora had about the virus only being a part of her.
What I think would been interesting if she were a faunus. But had her trait. (Ears,tail) cut off so customers wouldn't complain about a dirty faunus serving them food or cleaning.
Modern RWBY feels soulless. While the first 3 felt like they were trying to find their way and have some fun, the volumes past feel empty and hollow and only there to see how much they can milk the series. People woke up more in Volume 5 to its problems and it seems like Vol 8 is doing the same. At this point the series needs to end. The longer it goes, they are gonna run out of whatever luck they have.

She only lasted so long so Jaune could very slowly kill Penny, it’s like a scene from Austin Powers where a guard shouts “NOOOOO!” as a steam roller very slowly makes its way towards him.

Your counterpoint over her fan-assumed motivations is pretty weak. The real issue with Cinder wanting power for guaranteed freedom is that we only have two dots to connect for that, and nothing throughout the show to show that trauma and insecurity. You could make a control-freak character place themselves into servitude and have it make sense if that's the only way they think they can achieve their goals. Having it turn abusive would connect to the backstory, which then would set up for an alternative outcome for the character to learn something new or resolve their arc.
A shame the writers are somehow lobotomites when working on this show.

But this one takes the cake with poor writing, character "development" (if you can call it that lol), plot "progression", useless side plots/characters that go nowhere, Ruby herself is still a crap protag, and the list just writes itself. Really a shame that a show with such great potential has gone so far downhill. I don't even give a crap what happens in volume 9 which is sad as I followed these characters for the past 4-5 years or so. Volume 8 in my opinion is a big middle finger to long time fans. Absolutely terrible. If you want decent RWBY content, read fanfiction, it's literally better than the show.

If anything Hazel's first appearance made him more of a brooding powerhouse: someone quiet and reserved, yet holds great power. A recent example of this archetype done right would be Vander from Arcane.

I still, for the life of me, cannot figure out just what the hell Cinder actually wants or plans to do once she gets the Maidens power.
Does she want to rule her own kingdom? The fear or respect of everyone around her? More freedom? Purpose? What the hell is it?
Because right now, any and all of these choices are actively denied by the power she’s well aware of; The fucking immortal by the name of Salem.
In fact, now that I think about it, Cinder hasn’t been competent since the early volumes. It’s just that Ruby and the gang are so incompetent that she could literally walk in a do whatever she wanted.
I theorise that she plans on swiping the Relics from under Salem's nose once she has all the powers, then hopes to be able to do something about her once she has all of that power at her disposal.
But the key word is theorise. All we can do is guess, because the show isn't giving an inch.

Number 1 problem I have with this show is that the characters aren’t characters they’re puppets of the writers. None of the characters actions r ever consistent or fluent, they just act the way the writers impromptu ass shit wants them too

I said it before and i’ll die on this hill, Cinder Fall is the endgame villain. Salem is a plot device, a calamity that looms over the heroes nothing more nothing less. Cinder from chapter one till now has gotten way more focus that the “big bad” just doesn’t get. They teased Salem finally making a personal move and showing what shes made of, yet M&K insist this is “Cinder’s volume” Give me a break

To paraphrase celtic pheonix and fatmanfalling "in modern RWBY only the current scene is canon" i feel like this statement explains most of the issues with the current direction of the show.
At least we have the shaft anime to look forward too, it will be impossible for it to be worse than RWBY proper, and they actually have competent writers and staff.

In the pilot series for Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, House of Bloo, a bratty girl wanted to adopt Bloo only for Wilt, Coco and Eduardo to stop her from doing so. Unfortunately they all got in each other's way without until the end.
The difference between that and this? That scene was played for a joke.....
These writers are actually very good at their job. They’re trying to make the show as bad as possible.
Rwby at this point is legit dying. And I honestly don't care at this point, the show used to be famous but now we are seeing the signs that it's fading into obscurity. The show should have ended a while ago, the fact that it continues is a testament that we still want to see something good. Yet constantly I am met with disappointment with the writers on the decisions they continue making, there was legit some good idea's interesting concepts which means on some level there was something they wanted to tell. Instead, we have shitty writing, inconsistent rules, and Inconsistent characters.
If they weren't so busy trying to make that Bumblebee ship happen, maybe the story would have been better. It pisses me off that the show started great and slowly begin to dissolve away. I know I'm just ranting but I just want to say it. The Characters are all over the place, back then during the original 3 volumes we felt a connection with these characters, their motivations, their reasonings the stuff that makes them so relatable.
For instance, let's choose someone, like the Main character Ruby on what this show was based on. She's relatable because she represents the young teenager just realizing how big the world is, then knowing that she's socially awkward and she has trouble making new friends, we also know that in some way she likes to tinker and build and has a profound love for weapons when her team is made she's first met with the dilemma of becoming a leader that being scolded harshly by Weiss. Which gives her motivation on trying to become the leader her team needs her to be.
Here are some other examples. Yang, we learn that Yang is the older Half-sister of ruby, she has a temper problem which leads her to problems. She has a quirky positive attitude we know that she likes to brawl when given the chance. We also know that she loves her sister with a passion. We get to learn that her original mother has abandoned both her and her father and when given the chance I assume the original idea was to graduate from beacon and then begin her search with her friends.
Blake, we learn that she's secretly a Faunus with a dark history in her background, we know she like social distance on some level, and we know that she likes porn novels and other forms of smut. She tries to start her life over after running away from the group she once supported and worked with the cost was that she left her family behind in the process, soon she finds her goal, that being wanting to change the white fang into a peaceful group despite the large damage they've done and also wanting peace between humans and Faunus.
Weiss. We learn that she is a Heiress of a company her family owns, we learn that she's arrogant yet skilled in fencing, and we know that she's quite intelligent. She has a problem with the White fang because of the crimes they've committed and probably other stuff that we don't about, we don't know her exact goal but we know that she wants to be good friends with Ruby and also help guide the young reaper to some extent, while also making herself a better person.
These are the stuff that made us connected to them in the first place, they have such a huge potential that years later this would have been considered a classic. Yet here we are now, characters I don't recognize anymore, Character growth all over the place, no consequences shown at all, and the story they are trying to show is in shambles. Such a shame honestly.
The story should end in volume 3
The end of volume 8 was a time travel plot
So volume 9 is gona be the birth of Huntsmen or Ruby teaching silver eye warriors how to use their power, why if she cant use it rigth? character development or some dum reason, so she can "shine" as a protagonist

But in all honestly, Cinder is nothing but a cartoon Villain. She was better in the first 3 volumes and she was bland back then, Now she's just a paper cut cartoon villain, She has no dimensions.
