Also top 10 characters who's absence hurt the plot(characters like Glynda who had no in-universe explanation for disappearing, or like Salem who was supposed to be the main villain but never does anything.

I just didn't like how all of the sudden they realized Nora and Ren didn't have character arcs since V4 (even though them mourning Pyrrha with Jaune is RIGHT THERE), so they had Ren being all angst (with reason) and Nora suddenly wanting distance from Ren to figure out who she is... which yeah it would make sense, but not 8 volumes in would anyone want that. In fact, people want the opposite, for her to get together to Ren.
*sigh* At least she isn't worse than the rest... which isn't saying a lot when the bar is so low.

    *Volume 08*
Nora: I want to discover myself and learn who am I before I dedicate to this relationship.
    *Volume 9*
Writers: Yeah no, you’re gonna be stuck in Vacuo with Ren while Jaune spends 30+ years in Alice in Wonderland all by himself, this is gonna happen in the Volume where it’s theme focuses on identity. Something that we just established in your character last volume. Good luck with that offscreen.

I’m still wondering why she had ALL that stuff to say about ironwood releasing the info on Salem but when Ruby does it.. it’s complete SILENCE.. she might as well not even be in the scene???
This is the stuff that got on my NERVES when it came to Rwby and makes me actively dislike them. They LITERALLY DO the same stuff that they and the show framed ironwood as a terrible person for even considering but when it’s them, it’s backhanded by both the show itself and the fans. It baffles me.
Winter the best example when she fights ironwood and SOLEY blames the fall of mantle and their madness on ironwood when SHE pushed for Marshall law, the act that actually pushed them over the edge. She takes NO accountability the same way emerald didn’t as soon as she joined RWBY’s side. Honestly it makes my blood boil. The amateur writer favoritism is real.
I hate them all tbh.. even nora. Poor ren gets chastised for even considering them naive in their actions. This show is written by hacks.

  • @KaiserShounen
    @KaiserShounen 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

8:30 My thing is this; there was barely much characterization involving Nora and her past at this point. So even IF we could say her past experiences are what influence her ire towards Ironwoods measures, there was so little consistency behind it to make it tangible or compelling. Its the same issue why Ruby's bond with her mother feels like a tacked on piece of her character rather than a meaningful backstory. They feel like bugs, not features so whatever actions they take come more from you headcanon-ing how sensible it is rather than the show exploring those concepts.
9:30 Fuck me I hate this moment. So its fine when YOU disregard the normal people for the sake of the planet but not Ironwood?? They should have had Ren go to Amity with the others and Nora stay in Mantle.

I’ll be honest, I’ve never cared about Nora. I enjoyed her and Ren’s backstory in Volume 4, but I still didn’t really care about her.
Then by the time they decided to do anything with her in volumes 7 and 8 I didn’t care enough at all. Even then, I gave it a chance, but I felt it was done badly because her moments feel forced, like they needed to give her something to do, rather than mattering. Plus I can’t stand how she treat Ren and his arc culmination by the end.

I am the same. Even with RWBY itself, I was so done, I don't even remember if I watched Volume 8 or not. I am almost sure I watched volume 7, not sure about 8. I watched until they fell to that Never After thing after trying to escape that snowy territory (Atlas[?]) or whatever. I am in doubt if that was volume 7 or 8, though.
I never cared enough about Nora, as well. She was just the annoying, hyperactive, full of caffeine kid (which was her character, and that's fine). So, I can't even point at most things that people are referring to about her in vol. 7, 8 & 9, because I was already desensitized while watching the show overall, let alone to pay attention to the further assassination of her character.

Nora was supposed to be part of the B-Team. These characters aren't really supposed to have much going on with them and we get snippets at best.
Unfortunately the writers seem to forget the series was supposed to be RWBY and not JNPR handing off pretty much the majority of the plot to the B-Team which wasn't all that developed.
The later seasons was them trying to correct that mistake but in the wrong way. Instead of shifting the focus BACK to RWBY they tried to develop JNPR.
Having an Arc or two focus on the B-Team is fine since it shows how the world is reacting and adjusting to the actions of the protagonists or even just let the Main Cast rest for a bit while we go off on an adventure without them. This is why I didn't have as much a problem with the 'Jaune Arc' while everyone else seems to have irrational hatred for it.
(While I still agree that he's unintentionally taken over a main character slot lately and deserves flak for it.)
Nora as a barebones B-Teamer is perfectly fine. Frankly I have no issues with how she was handled up to Vol 8. But then they started to focus on her like they were prepping to elevate her to MC status before cutting away to Vol 9 as filler. To build her up like that before cutting her legs out from under her? Yeah the character quality is going to suffer and turn people off.

Hot take: I think Nora and Ren functioning as a duo is not only entirely fine but that splitting them up is a bad way to 'fix' a problem that never existed in the first place (also for some reason I never see people criticizing Ren's writing in the first few volumes as much as Nora's even though she was easily the stronger character).
If anything, I think the biggest issue with them in the early seasons was that they weren't a couple already when there really wasn't a good reason for them to not be together at that point.

Seriously they felt like the side characters to the side characters.
By the time the writers remembered Nora, nobody was invested in her story. All she was was one half of a ship they should have kept together. Why you ask? Because now they have to throw together a story for her at what will pretty much be the end of the series.

    @jessicahhh000-0 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

My issue is that with her incoming character arc, the writers think they’re being clever and self-aware of their initial issues with Nora - issues that they themselves created. The fact that she was mostly a one note Ren fangirl was the result of mediocre writing - a conscious decision by the writers to make her that way because they were oblivious to how one dimensional it made her look. That is, until they kept getting backlash and it finally sunk in. Now, they’re fixing their mistakes with her many volumes later, but it doesn’t feel like it was intended from the beginning in a meaningful way. It doesn’t feel like natural character development/progression because said development was spurred by their limited writing abilities. The same thing happened with Ruby.

    • @jessicahhh000-0
      @jessicahhh000-0 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

What sucks is I think they could’ve at least helped it /seem/ more natural with just small continuities and character moments - that’s why the little continuity with the “be strong and hit stuff” one liner works so well and stands out. Imagine if we had a handful more moments like that, all of which would help her lead up to her current conclusion (that she doesn’t know who she is without Ren) - it would make her progression flow so much better and feel less stiff.
Writers can’t just say “Hey look, we actually know this character is one-note - but you can’t get mad at us because we’re aware of it and she’s developing!!”. Like bro, we’re how many volumes in?? Sure her mini character arc is cool, but if we’re looking at Nora as a whole, this one little arc unfortunately doesn’t negate her issues that have basically been there since the beginning.
Just say you didn’t know what you were doing with the character at first and now you do.

Rwby in general is terribly written. Like 1/10 level writing. Nora demonstrates this. Her personality 'Quirky!', fashion 'Pink', and her fighting style 'Big Hammer' do not fit AT ALL with her backstory - that she was an orphan on the street. How does a homeless orphan backstory fit with this carefree, funny, girl?
She was abandoned by her mother in a firm attack, and then experienced Ren losing his father in the Nuckelavee attack - so she should be terrified by Grimm or have an extreme hatred. She would have become a huntress to express her hatred of all grim - yet she attends the hunter academy with a bubbly carefree attitude. This doesn't fit.
Then they blew the load of the nuckelavee, and just had it be defeated .. So, that was all closed a bit prematurely. Then they made her character arc about caring about the people of Mantle ...? This feels like it came out of nowhere. Why is she a 'For the people' sort of person now? How does this fit with her bubbly, pink party-girl personality. Then her story was about her needing to find herself outside of her relationship with Ren .. To me this feels like this is just a meta-reference to how the writers don't know what to do with Ren and Nora unless they are a couple.
Finally, she is based on Thor. But what is the relevance of this fairytale allusion? Only superficial things - her hammer, the lightning, the red hair. I cant see a single substantial reference, or usage of the norse mythology basis.

@@hypeman1825 Fully agree. The show is very biased in that manner.
When a female character assaults a less powerful character, it is considered comedic.
A male character doing it.... well let's just say that is not done.
I sometimes use the Yellow trailer as an example. Yang walks into Junior's place and grabs his privates to get info. It is supposed to be ok because he is 'a shady character' and is meant to be comedic.
But let Qrow walk into Little Miss's place looking for info and does.... the same thing, because he needs info and she is a shady character.
Would not go over well with most. And certainly would not be considered comedic.

Pre-season 4 Nora was great, a simple character who tried to live life to the fullest. Even the back story was good, though competent writers would have started foreshadowing her (and Ren) trauma long before the grim fight. But this is where I believe Monty's note ran out. For after season 6, she started making choices outside her established character. Seriously, her time as a vagabond basically writes itself for her motivations. Yet they have the girl tripping over "secrets" 😫.
They also started her crisis waaaay late in the series. Which again should have been foreshadowed.
Is Nora a good character? Probably better to say was she a good character? For the longer she was in the hands of the dynamic duo Miles and Kerry, the worst she got.

I still say that Ren and Nora should've been left behind with Beacon. The Volume 4 stuff for me felt like a really artifical attempt to justify their continued existence even _at the time._
Besides, after the tragedy at Beacon, it would've been perfectly realistic that so many young and hopeful huntsmen and huntresses in training just had their spirits broken by loss and failure- Ren and Nora could've been such an example of the _spiritual_ loss that accompanied the destruction of Beacon, simply disappearing into the world never to be heard from again.
Meanwhile, Ruby and Jaune- her first friend at Beacon and the one who had the furthest to grow into a hero- would set off together on their lonesome at the beginning of Volume 4. And the cast would be two characters less bloated.

This might be a hot take (probably not) but even with the flaws I still love Team JNR because they're everything Team RWBY isn't. They actually act like a team, they never split up while RWBY got separated way too long, and they actually hang out like friends.
What I mean to say is that their relationship feels organic, the moment in the last episode of V4 when they just sit together, their moment looking at Pyrrha's statue, even in V8 when Ren needs to apologize to Nora, the conversation starts with the three of them in the room, because Jaune is a key part of that relationship and he also needed to talk to Ren.
I think it's crazy how the show could not make RWBY feel organic while JNR is right there proving that the writers are able to do this.

I don't necessarily think vol 5 was bad for all of em I think a certain watts got some positive's from the volume given he mainly wasn't apart of that volume compared to a lot of others since that volume made him more competent and smart out of Salem's pawns with the amount we saw him in the volume

Unlike everyone here tho I think RWBY isn't a bad show with the inclusion of team JNPR since Jaune and Ruby are foils of one another. However, I believe they should've separated or taken their roles in separate directions.
Although, Jaune getting infected by Ozpin would've made more narrative sense than some random kid

honestly no personally she isn't a good character, her character was planned to be assassinated moving forward from
me and my man have been through everything together to "I'm a girl boss and am independent so now it's time for me to leave you"
it doesn't really help because even heckuva boss shows that two characters actually loving each other through thick and thin is more entertaining and enjoyable than "I need to be independent in the most toxic way possible"
tldr: they wanted to make her a strong female character and instead remade Harley Quin and toxic femininity
