Adam is one of Rwby's earliest examples of keeping things a mystery only to realize that it's trash upon reveal. He went from having the potential to become a compelling antagonist(unlike cinder) to a screaming man-child whose main motivation is getting back at his ex...seriously? His squandered potential is even worse than Raven's and Hazel's. I doubt he has the sharingan-I mean silver eyes but i hope he does because it'd be hilarious.
Thats why you dont simply have a racist Anti-villain (supposed due to off screen racism) suffer such a sudden transition to neo-racist villain that doesnt hesitate to kill his own race if they get in his way, Adam should´ve shown moments of hesitation and proper characterization in regards to that, because otherwise he´s no better than Hody Jones from One Piece and Hody Jones was shit, compared to Arlong, that came way before him.

Honestly. It doesn't even look like Adam is really an abuser in the short. Unless you count the "manipulation" when Adam talk with Blake. Most of the Short is about his relationship with Sienna than Blake. It honestly makes Blake look like just a minor person in Adam's life. Then again. The guy seemingly forget about Blake in Volume 4 despite threatening to hurt everybody she ever loved so that might actually be the case.
I agree especially in vol 2, the way that Blake talks about him was more of a relationship from respect than romantic. Heck, I would have believe Blake has more obsession/ huge crush over Adam and not the other way around (it would Illia's line more sense)
Blake's double-axe handle punch not only ruined Adam for me, it ruined literally the whole show. Up to that point I had been willfully ignoring the increasingly evident problems in RWBY's writing but that punch scene was so bad and pissed me off so much that I'd barely even consider myself a RWBY fan anymore.
If he and Yang ever mix it up she'd better vaporize him the second she lands a hit otherwise its going to make the hand to hand specialist of the team look way weaker than Blake, who as far as I recall never faught hand to hand before.
That's how i feel about volume 5 as a whole, i loved the show through volume 3, had my ciritcisms of 4, then 5 is so garbage that i retroactively like 4 now
I don't understand, this I just honestly hope you can explain, why does getting hit once, not even a hit that does anything, change...anything? Adam wasn't hurt, he wasn't in a worse position, he didn't even have a scruff mark, he lost his cool because of the shock of how many Faunus opposed him, and got careless for less then a second. I could understand if Adam was even remotely bothered by it, but besides his pride there is literally not a single thing that did to him. Him trying to blow up was WAY worse.
Except he's not actually an idiot if you look at the plot? Cinder is the one who made that dumb fucking decision to try to forget about the Relic and try to kill Ruby, then literally forgets about her and try to kill Jaune. Despite that, they still would have won if literally, half the villains involved hadn't suddenly forgotten why they were doing this dumb idea and wandered off. Or you know, just decide to take the Relic before inviting the heroes over since they literally had over a week to do so and the Heroes literally didn't know they were there and were just being lazy sitting in the house. ' Adam, meanwhile, stuck to the plan. He followed orders, was in the right place at the right time, planted the bombs, waited for his allies to come out, and asked them for help, even if he got rejected. On that front, he did everything right, it was solely external factors that caused his failing, namely 1) Blake suddenly having invisibility frames and epic vorpal adamantine +5 fists of Adam's bane for that one second, 2) Ilia being completely invisible because she changed her skin color even though they're in a mostly open area *under multiple light sources*, 3) Ilia being apparently being bomb disposal expert, 4) all the racists in Mistral just taking the day off (seriously, where are all the guys who supposedly hide in the forest just to kill traveling Faunus?) 5) all the politicians in mistral suddenly decide, from their perspective, to let a terrorist army comes in because of the plot, 6) all the people who care about national security taking the day off because of plot, 7) no one calling Leo to check on things, even though they'd have needed to get permission from the Minstralean Council which Leo is a part of to enter Mistral probably hours, if not days ago, 8) Adam's powers and Aura spontaneously not working 9) all the other factors needed for an entire army to roll natural 20s on their stealth rolls and show up without tipping him off somehow (seriously *look at the so-called Mengarean army* , how the fuck did those guys blend in?). 10) The writers force him to run away despite the Mengarean army *doesn't even have fuckin guns or blades* . Remember when this vague thing called "aura" used to exist? It had some basic properties in volume 1: it protected you from attacks like an armor, it passively healed minor bruises/cuts over time, your senses would sharpen and you could also channel it through your weapon of choice to do more damage. Man, Blake's double punch must've had more aura than Yang's entire semblance if that was enough to deal with Adam. **rolls eyes**
Adam was one of the most promising and badass villains I've seen from modern day animation. To all of the sudden becoming the biggest btch in the entire series. And it was done in a course of a few scenes. Those scenes were they show adam going crazy seriously came out of nowhere and was super cringy as hell. It seriously had me "what the hell is wrong with this dude?" No build up, no continuity, just random sht to build up the next worst scene in the entire show that came after. Blake knocking Adam out was by far the biggest middle fingers Miles and Kerry could've ever done to their fans. It reduce adam from the most fear villain in RWBY to just a random goon with no actual value whatsoever. Which begs the question "how the hell was this noob able to cut Yang's arm off? If it only took one hit from Blake to put him out?!!" What the hell were they on? I honestly believe if Monty had been with them in the entire writing process he would've btch slap both of them for coming up with that crap.
Adam was done dirty 3 times, first turning his mentor/mentee relationship with Blake into a abusive one, then turning him from a anti-villain racist to a Neo-racist Villain, in Vol. 5 without proper on screen time to showcase how he decides to kill his own gang leader and finally nerfing him to a disgrace.

Hmm, I have mixed feelings there. I still think Arkos and Renora are fine, and I ship Freezerburn pretty hard. However, Adam and Blake should not have been an abusive relationship allegory, at all. That's what Weiss' entire family--Winter included--is for. It shows perfectly how it's a cycle, and how one person can eventually become the sole target of the abuse and neglect if it means everyone else feels safer by jumping in on abusing that person. Adam and Blake being an abuse allegory could have been cool if only there were two factors; one, let Blake hitting Sun and such be explained as part of the cycle, and characters call her out on it. She faces negative consequences, she realizes this is wrong, as part of her development. Two, show us, the actual, abuse! The short did show him gaslighting Blake, which is definitely a step forward from what we've had so far, but like on-screen Faunus discrimination, this was only a BABY STEP forward. But even then, that's irrelevant when MONTY DIDN'T WANT THAT. Monty very explicitly stated they had a mentor and apprentice relationship, and that they WERE NOT lovers.
Get rid of Adam and Blake's stupid ex boyfriend thing. Give him the mentor and student relationship that Monty kept on saying on what's going on with between Adam and Blake. Have Adam be the challenge of ideals between him and Blake with him almost convincing her to rejoin him in Volume 3. Show Adam being a former righteous fighter who truly wanted to help the Faunus but years of fighting against Faunus discrimination had his ideals twisted which Blake notices and would eventually be the reason why she left the White Fang.

I wouldn't call him "neo-racist" as there's nothing really new in his ideological framework. He's a power mad despot with a hate-boner for humanity and thinks Faunus are just superior (though that MAY have some basis given some of the early episode info on the Human-Faunus Wars)
There are several things I would change in the faunus/Adam story-line. First, I would actually show faunus discrimination. I would make it happen on a regular basis. And I would show it happening to Adam. Maybe an anti-faunus hate group killed his family or scarred him, forcing him to wear the mask. This would make him sympathetic. Next, I would have faunus discrimination increase as Adam's terrorism gets more success. Humans would start to fear faunus and isolate them more. This will establish that while his intentions are good, his methods cause a great deal of harm, somewhat like Magneto from X-Men. Then, I would make it so that Adam was not abusive to Blake and still likes her. That would explain why Adam let her go and didn't peruse her. Then, when she confronts Adam and we see that Adam is the stronger fighter, maybe he actually lets Blake and Yang escape. Finally, I would have Adam drop a bombshell in his fight with Blake: he is actually holding back people even more radical than him in the White Fang. Adam wants equality with humans and uses violence, but there are those in the White Fang who want to enslave or genocide humans and he is holding them back. Then, he warns Blake that her parents might become targets as they are the least radical White Fang members. That would give Blake a reason to go back to her home village. I would have her talk to Yang once more and explain that she has to go help her family. Then it would make sense for Yang to be upset that she isn't there rather than her leaving because Yang understands how important family is and why Blake must go. In summary, I would have made Adam's relationship with Blake tragic for both of them rather than just abusive. The viewer could see both points of view and that they both like each other but, in the end, they are on opposite sides.
Pretty good, I would add with him being the anti-hero third party conflict, like spade slick in homestuck, and have him go after Salem, finding out that she was responsible for killing parents. His semblance, from his father, was also the one that broke the moon
Nice back story, I'm in the camp that doesn't dig his attahment to Blake the least but the angle you bring up could work. Though I am curious how him being more hands and agressive with humans would hold people back. Wouldn't that enable the behaviour more?

Pretty good however I would drop the part about him holding back a more radical faction of the white. You allude to him being like Magneto earlier and I feel that is what Adam should be drawn inspiration from. The ambitious man who has seen injustice and takes a well-meaning crusade to far. Adding in the radical faction that he is trying to hold back takes away from the overly ambitious angle.
I suppose I could dump my 2 cents as well if I were to write Adams character I would make him sort of a itachi character from Naruto have him pretend to be a bad guy to motivate blake to not be a coward and take more action to stop him the attack on beacon killing seania cutting off yangs arm and the attack on mistrial plus trying to kill her parents would all be thing to push Blake

To be fair, the silver eyes are only known to be an anti-Grimm weapon. Even if Adam has them, it doesn't necessarily change things too much, considering that he's become a Grimm pawn and all. Come to think of it, he's probably going to have to join the Chaos Syndicate, since the White Fang probably doesn't respect him anymore.
Adam also lost a lot of potential since he was pretty much the cause of cause of Yang's PTSD and having her confront the man who took her arm would have been a fantastic moment for drama, if Adam didn't go down like a bitch. Now he's got the Kylo Ren effect of making himself look lamer for failing in such an awful way instead of making Blake look cooler for beating him, which makes everyone he beat look worse by comparison.
It's sad because Adam was one of my favorite characters after the first 3 volumes because he was a threat and there was a lot of mystery and potential around him, but then after waiting anxiously for his reappearance in volume 4, he totally disappointed me in volume 5.
Don't worry, they'll introduce another cool mysterious villain who is shown to kill expert huntsman, only to go down because jaune sneezes in his general direction in the last two episodes.
Nice to see a vid about Adam. It's a sad shame when Fanfiction can produce at least better more threatening versions of Adam than miles and Kerry. In fact I'd say most writers could do a better job than those 2.
Celestial Phoenix if spelled correctly working on fixing rwby videos and so far he makes a proper rwby story even his version of volume 1 and 2 are well written even filling in gaps that weren't filled in the previous volumes.
FanFiction is actually what introduced me to RWBY, Coeur Al Aran fanfics especially. I wasn't thrilled when I realized the actual show was nowhere near close what the fans wrote for the show.

It's called RWBY: A GRIMM FATE by Crusader76 Its about a grimm that got turned into Faunus. A tagline for the fic is "Can a monster have a soul?". Its amazing really because as of right now he's a well written character. He isnt OP as with other OCs but he isnt underpowered either. Its more of the fact he's a 17 year old Alpha Beowolf in a body he isnt familiar with that limits his combat potential but he is still capable. Which leads me to the fight scenes which are great to read and easy to keep track of. It's great. For personality, the process that turned him into a Faunus gave Grimm boy more human like traits. Wonder Bread that scene didn’t really bother me. It shows that Adam is just a glass tank. What bothered was how his goal shifted from wanting humans to fear the Faunus to wanting to enslave humanity. WHERE did that come from all of a sudden?

that one black dude I don’t know if you’ve noticed but no one on this show is invincible. Yang loses to mercury. Weiss to vernal. Cinder to Raven. Characters we think are really strong can still lose. Adam has never been hit when facing a foe so him being a glass cannon balances out since he can do ridiculous damage from a single strike. You are acting like Blake’s hit literally knocked him unconscious when all she did was temporarily stunned him. He ran away because he was outnumbered and his plans fell apart.

So much wasted potential with the White Fang. I’m glad someone who cares about the White Fang more than I do have some tips on how to fix it. If I were writing RWBY they’d have been practically scrapped. Adam would just be a personal villain antagonizing Blake for leaving an organization. But that’s just me, any time I write a group, the point of the group doesn’t matter nearly as much as the individuals in it.
If I were the writers I'd wanna scrap Volume 5 and just do it over again seeing how negative the fan reception to it was. But unfortunately they won't and will continue to ruin characters constantly

I like both him, Cinder Fall and Neo, and it's sad knowing that the writers aren't giving them enough backstory and to sympathize with them. Hopefully adam will get some kind of redemption in our eyes including Cinder (if she survives the fall.).
Silent Silver-Fox I’ve always had the impression that Adam and his fighting style was based off of Vergil in DMC3 after watching the Black trailer. His powerup/Moonslice in the same trailer looked similar to the Devil Trigger.

Yes. The double-axe handle punch ruined Adam for me. Of all the original character shorts, he was my second favorite character (after Weiss). He became a horrify monster beyond what I could have possibly dreamed in Volume 3. Volume 5 literally ruined him entirely. That's why in the fanfic I've been working on (and off) for a couple of years now will feature at least one scene with Adam. He'll fighting my entire OC team. Four on one. And spoilers: he's going to win.

Lord Knightcon I write RWBY fanfics too. I rewrote Sienna’s death to fill someone’s request, and made both Sienna and Adam display fighting prowess rather than him just oneshotting her.

I couldn't agree more. When I saw his short, I didn't even have any part of me feel like I cared anymore. They could have shown something happen to him in that short, hence, why he hates the humans. But it was just showing his rise to where he is now. And after what they did to him in the show, I was tuned out by Adam by then. It is unfortunate. HELL YEAH, edit: I totally agree with the bulk of this video, I literally do not understand why instead of keeping the mentor and student relationship for Blake and Adam they had to somehow switch it up as an abusive one due to seventeen-year-old speculators that haven't watched Star Wars, I've had my fair share when writing abuse in general, and what I was given was pitiful. Furthermore, if they wanted to push for an Adam romance sooooo badly they could've made a character that is the exact opposite of him, from his ideas to his execution hell even to them being a human that pretends to be Faunus probably to get insight on his whereabouts, then that would've made a whole lot of sense when thinking about the whole bomb stick up would it not? That oh-------, therefore we can be spared of the lackluster attempts of backstory flashbacks between A&B (Adam and Blake) which instead of hearing Blake's side of the story, we can hear Adams'. I give examples so here's one. Adam: (after he ran off like you described) All of that only to be ambushed! FF (fake Faunus): ...A- Adam: They're all brainwashed, they all think humans will understand them! Humans don't care about us! (does something dramatic) and Blake, I thought I could trust her, but like everyone else she betrayed me. FF (fake Faunus): If you don't mind me asking, what happened specifically? Adam: What between me and Blake or the humans? FF (fake Faunus): Both BEGIN FLASHBACK LIKE HOLYSHIT GIVE ADAM MORE EMOTION THAN SOME 12-YEAR-OLDS EDGY SONIC OC AHHHH However, due to the huge cast of characters, it's sadly something I hope we will never get in order for this series to survive. Frankly, Adam is supposed to be the Killmonger of RWBY the one that makes you think "damn he has a point" but also say "you can't do it like that though". The Adam short should've been his past with suffering and abuse by the hands of humans so we as an audience would come to understand his animosity towards humans, hell the most we could've gotten was a slur used by humans to put down Fanus, for example: "Damn Faunto's at it again" (I came up with that on the spot lmao its so bad), to which he gets angry and lashes out, because the word IS.A.SLUR, we should've gotten insight on him as a character and him as a person but we didn't we just got "owo flaswy colwors". I really like your rewrite. I agree, ex-boyfriend Adam is a stupid concept. I like the more complex idea of Adam. (Such as the one explained by Eruptionfang; that was a pretty interesting way to show Adam and I liked it a lot.) Now I did like the Adam Short, it showed potential (Maybe Adam isn’t ruined yet? Just please no silver eyes!) and it might be one of my favorites. But hey that’s just my opinion. Anyways besides that; I agree with most of what you said. (Oh gosh that scene in Volume 5....UGH. I'll be completely honest, I've been a bit naive when it comes to RWBY. I always liked it, thinking it was great. Granted, I could tell something was a little off in Volumes 4 and 5, but I still liked it; I never really caught on on most of these things. I've noticed more in hindsight, but your videos do help make a lot of things clear, with one important point being made: CRWBY has no idea what they're doing with this series. I've honestly lost all respect for the show, and don't even plan on watching it in any official way. (I still plan on watching it, because I do genuinely want to see how the story ends.)
Honestly, I'd say not to let fact impact enjoyment, the show irritates me, but I love it because at least there's something to talk about. RWBY has become like the room for me. After every episode I turn to my friends and say 'okay what was up with that?' It's really, honestly so strangely written that I find enjoyment in deconstructing it's oddness, at least!
When Adam said "it's over for all of us" he could've ordered the members of the white fang to attack Blake's army. Sure the white fang was possibly outnumbered, but they had more training than the group Blake arranged. While that was happening, he and Blake could've had a rematch, which would've been great development for her, as it would show that she's no longer running away from her problems. But sadly we got a whinny brat who threw a tantrum when his bombs didn't go off. And in volume 3, like you said the obsessed ex-boyfriend angle didn't fit, especially with him already being established as setting up shop in Beacon at the end of volume 2 (with it becoming a concrete thing in the flashback of volume 3's beginning of the end where he had a base in the foreverfall forest! I mean who said he left it after making his deal with Cinder?) If I was writing volume 3, I would've made him jadded, with a drive to kill Blake because he wouldn't care for traitors. And in volume 5, he could've goaded Blake with the loss of Yang's arm, saying something along the lines of "Wasn't it your cowardice that cause your blonde friend to lose her arm?" Adam is the type of person to say something like that. And the whole Iliya (the faunus that liked Blake because I can't spell her name) thing with her waiting to send her back to Adam would've made more sense if that was the case. Whew, sorry that this is pretty long. I just had a lot to say about this topic. Loved the video though.

I was happy to see some alright fight scenes in the short, but, as you stated, the short itself was jumbled and a bit confusing. The worst part, though, was I couldn't take Adam seriously at all. He proved himself to be more than capable at fighting in just the short alone regardless of other canon, and he just goes down from the lamest punch ever. Wouldn't his aura protect him? Surely, Adam's aura would be up and ready to go during an engagement, especially a high-stakes one at that. I suppose that would make too much sense, or they just wanted to avoid having to animate a fight scene. Probably the latter. Honestly, an awesome showdown with Adam was a big thing I was looking forward to for volume 5 as it was being released. *Wonk*
Why didn't Adam just follow up by attacking with his sheath after Blake's shadow-dodge in V5? It would've worked in a similar vein to the fight scene in Rorouni Kenshin between Kenshin and Jinei.
Archon of Plagues Aye, he could have at least countered her attack. She leaves herself wide open with her whackamole attack. However, I think it would be more reasonable to think that Adam would know she would dodge considering she shadow scooted out of the way in V3 and how they were teammates for quite some time (She had to have done this at least once then.); having said knowledge, it would make more sense for Adam to feint an attack and strike once Blake has finished her shadow scooting or do AoE Dust attacks. Something! Anything!
All I’m gonna comment on is that his aura probably was up but aura doesn’t stop you getting knocked back/down by a hit - it just protects you from the hit (and a small hit like a punch wouldn’t make it flash) So he probably had it up but they didn’t show the visual Now Sienna’s aura is a much better question
But... but... then how will we get away having the characters just sit around and explain the plot which requires less animation (because animating is hard and we wouldn't want to do that unless we need to)
Go even further. Erase half of them, and it would be an improvement. Heck, just get rid of MOST of them, and it would be an improvement. Actually, just erase the entire show. It would have been better to never have existed in the first place. All it ends up being is undeserved hype and then disappointment created by a bunch of comedic assholes
Or Hire new voice actors for the love of God you have these famous voice actors and they are side characters who die in two seconds why do the side characters sound better then the important ones
Yup you're right. Adam was something to be feared. It was his niche. Then we get to vol 5 and he's no longer dangerous. I get that they wanted to show Blake overcoming her fear of him, but it shouldn't be at the cost of his own character. If anything, they should have made him even more dangerous during that scene. He could have told the faunas that was with him to go all out. Give up their lives for his cause and kill everyone, even if they get killed in the process. Using his crew to kill and runaway. Showing all the faunas there how dangerous he really is, not just taking the belladonna's word for it. That would also justify members of the white fang turning their backs on him, instead of that stupid blow everyone up scene. I really think miles and Kerry need a 3rd writer. I have no expectations for vol 6.
They kinda wrecked him being dangerous back in volume 3 when he didn't bother to try to attack Cinder when all she did was wreck some fodder white fang, which apparently is enough to get him to bow to a human.

She could have forced him to be submissive. We understand the power scale of a maiden vs reg human/faunas. Unfortunately the writers have a bad way of showing it.
Vexed, I haven't been a subscriber for long, but each new RWBY video fills me with a new and deep love for you. Adam had so much going for him, he was a man of few words and plenty action. His treatment in the latest volume was just so...sad, really. I'm suppose to believe Blake, who was mentored by Adam, and who never even finished her huntress training, is at a point where she can stand up to Adam? Really, it feels like they're writing each volume without any direction for any character. I want to like RWBY, but they aren't making it easier when there are fanfics with more compelling and well written narratives then the official content.
I was at least expecting a Vergil-type character where the ends justify the means, but we got this inconsistent mentor/ex-lover character that loses all of his threat factor in one scene. Such a damn shame. He seemed pretty motivated and had one of the coolest fighting styles/weapons in the show. I'm not even sure if it's possible to salvage him at this point. He's better than Oscar at least.
I think Monty intended for Adam and Blake to have a mentor/student relationship, but M&K changed it. I mean it would explain the discrepancies with the early and later seasons. 🤷
Before watching: The short was mediocre at best. Yeah, the fights were actually fights, but other than that, the voice acting still sucked except for Sienna Khan, Ilia was just there for no reason plus she looked the same age, and I swear to god if Adam gets a redemption act BEFORE he even does something that makes me afraid of him like in Blake's trailer, I will be mad. During: I totally forgot that Adam dgaf about Blake in the earlier seasons (1 and 2). Did Miles and Kerry seriously went down the abusive/obsessive bf route? They really made Adam a less terrifying character. If Adam stayed not giving a fudge about Blake and just started trying to kill her just for leaving the White Fang or even go after her teammates as her torture, THAT would be an awesome route for a villain. During the shorts part: What ticked me off the most about other reviewers for the short, THEY NEVER MENTION THEY WANT TO SEE ADAM'S PAST! They were all gushing over the animation and fight more than questioning about where and how Adam even began going down the route he is on. Damn the fight, where are his parents? Are they dead? Were they actually really passive Faunus not wanting to fight while Adam was, so they banned him? Where was he brought up? Was he bullied or worst by the humans? How did he find out about his aura/sembelance? Why was he at the place with Blake's dad and the rest? Was he actually evil all along and really planned on killing Sienna since day 1? So many questions left unanswered for a short DEDICATED to Adam? That's why I like you the most. You are asking the REAL questions. Also, if Adam is a silver eye warrior or even a human in disguise, I will just leave. Just straight up leave. Don't know where I'm going. I'm just leaving. After: I love your conclusion and changeups better. It makes sense PLUS if flows better. I just HOPE they make Adam terrifying in v. 6. But I'm bouncing once I see that Blake and Yang are buddy buddies again. Damn the rest.

I like the contrasting lines of Adam’s trailer that are “time to get what we deserved” to “time to get what I deserved”. Also I liked people praising him when he killed that man (makes him sort of like Bakugo from mha). But yeah what’s he gonna do when he shows up to fight team RWBY again? Get double hammer fisted? He also lost his WF, which is like half the reason he was intimidating.

Actually thats a common misnomer, most people who come across as jackassy on camera tend to be more mild-mannered off camera, because people tend to project a persona to make up for what they lack off camera (hense why people who are seemingly nice on camera act like asses off, and people who can see cocky tend to just be overcompensating for a perceived lack of confidence in being viewed) Or they could just be assholes, it's a 50/50 split.
The fact that you a fan of RWBY can turn a generic, brooding villain like Adam into a slightly more compelling villain just shows how badly the "writers" of RWBY have botched this character and his arc. Adam deserves so much better. All the characters deserved better.
Adam is still interesting to me, aside from the terrible ex boyfriend trope he's carrying. I really hope he doesn't have Silver Eyes, I do hope we get to see WHY he hated humans so much. But I hope that it's actually engaging and interesting, rather than average and unjustifiable.
The eyes revile in vol 6 in a fight scene , I think he has one blue eye and has one gray eye it has SCDC ,which Weiss father owns which he hates faunsenset as reviled by Weiss herself in vol 1
I actually really liked Adam. He had a cool design, awesome fighting scenes and was an overall badass villain in the first three volumes. But afterwards his character just changed. In my opinion I think he was kind of morally grey instead of pure evil like how the show and fandom likes to portray. This was because even though he was doing something bad, it was ultimately good in his mindset. Almost like an anti hero but not exactly. He always had a moral code. In one of the flashbacks with Cinder he always valued the lives of the Faunus. When Cinder wanted his help he refused because it was in his words it was "a human cause" and therefore something he didn't care about. Only later when Cinder had the powers of the Autumn Maiden, (I say Autumn because I'm British) and when she was threatening him and his army's lives did he dicide to join her. Adam believed in protecting his own kind. Only in later volumes did that change because then writers messed around with his character, his morals and his entire belief system. But in the early first few volumes, he always had his own rules on what he thought was fair and he stuck with it. Until the writers fucked up his character and had him be irrational and ruthless by killing his own followers. Also what's up with the writers implying that he and Blake had a romantic relationship? In volume two Blake specifically says that he was "more of a mentor really," The writers messed him up into some kind of weird generic villain that was just made to be killed off. And it's honestly a very undignified ending to his story. Not only is he defenceless when he is killed by having his sword taken and therefore his semblance becoming useless but also that it was uncharacteristic for Blake and Yang. They are supposed to be the heros, they are supposed to be better than the villains, they are supposed to have the chance to kill the villain but don't because they have mercy and they are supposed to show that they are morally higher then the people that they are fighting, showing that death and violence is not the answer. But now Adam is just left behind to be forgotten. And so many things about him will be left unanswered. For example, no one will ever know how he got his scar, how his past life was before the White Fang and what his true feelings about Blake. To be honest when I watched the short that was made about part of his back story I was a little bit hopeful that maybe he could change for the better and possibly get a redemption arc. Have him travelling alone after he's lost everything and trying to figure out what to do with himself. Almost like Zuko in one of my favourite episodes from from Avatar The Last Airbender "Zuko Alone". Develop his character some more and really get to know him as a person and understand why he felt he had to do what he did. And see the impact of his choices and not only on himself but on others and actually have him grow as a person and learn from his mistakes. But now that's a chance he'll never get. A story we'll never see and a character with such potential that was ultimately wasted.
Very good. I was very disappointed in what they did to adam in vol 5. You explained it perfectly. He was badass and dangerous. And i was concerned how would the team be able to deal with Hazel, Raven, Cinder, the spring maiden (or so we thought) AND Adam? But he looked like a wuss.... Emotional, couldnt fight, ran like a punk... Not saying he shouldn't have fled...but the way he ran... Not even a flashy escape... He looked like a punk. Sun was taunting him. Sun should have had a HARD fight with him...

For Real!? I want people to stop making villains sympathetic, I have seen it too much to the point I see it as tedious, make them good but without the sob story
I think there's more to "good" villains than making them foils to the hero (a take on the hero w/ a different philosophy/circumstance), making them "anti-villains", or making them "sympathetic". The whole "abusive boyfriend" angle could work for Adam, however RT doesn't do it right (they need to think more of a nuanced Joker/Harley dynamic). Adam being a "silver eyes" wouldn't be much of an issue--considering we don't know much about them. I do like the rewrite, however.
I'll never forgive Miles and Kerry for retconning him from Blake's mentor (as per Monty's original vision) to a pathetic 'abusive' ex. He was my most anticipated character for 3 seasons right up until his reunion with Blake "MY LOVE!". I'm genuinely surprised at how many people were won over by that character short. I can't believe people can find it in themselves to give a shit about him after they made him a complete chump
For a brief second there I thought Blake was actually in the short in place of Sienna and not just a still image. XD Anyway another great video Vexed, keep up the great work, and I like your style when it comes to reviewing and commenting. Below is just a few of my gripes that eat at me every time I even think of the short. But yeah that axe handle punch, it was quite possibly the worst decision they have ever made, no show like RWBY should have that be a decisive strike at the beginning of the fight. Adam who knows Blake's semblance, knows how it works,knows how she fights, and is a better fighter in every way, he would have slapped her again. The symbolism they tried to pull by showing his plain emblem fell short on me since if he had that, then we see him make the turn into crazy mask wearing murderer, yeah then I could see how that little subtle detail would have been more important, so the style would have had substance. Also Illia, had to be like twelve, thirteen back then? You're telling me she didn't change at all? Or I guess she's a Timelord. Heack Adam is estimated to be at least five years older meaning he was seventeen when Sienna took over, which let me tell ya doesn't paint a very good picture for this whole boyfriend aspect. Another thing that made me mad was that after the mask drop we see Adam staggering as if he barely escaped a fight with his life, he's not exhausted, he's staggering. Also I'm not gonna lie, Sienna's weapon to me, well it's kinda dumb, and they kinda phoned it in on some scenes, like where she's tanking bullets and people forget how their guns work.

Not a Bizarre JoJo I still feel like that wasn't the original plan given how Blake once referred to him as a mentor. I think the decided to change his character at some point while making Volume 3.
They confirm it as abusive, but we have yet to see that during the actual relationship flashbacks. A lot of people try to back it up by using the scene where he stabbed Blake and cut Yang's arm off, which is stupid. They aren't in a relationship during the time. Blake is merely seen as a traitor and wanting to hurt her actually makes sense.
Wonderful video as usual. I do disagree with one small thing though: We did learn some things about Adam that were "new". They just weren't "Interesting", because like you said: It was a jumbled mess. -We learned that he pioneered the trend of White Fang members wearing masks that resemble the Grimm. However that scene was stupid because all it amounted to was a bunch of misguided youths gathering to make a simple observation about him before cutting to the future someplace else. If they wanted to make that stick, they should have continued the scene and made Adam lead the other miscreants to a victory, thereby inspiring them by example into adopting their own masks. -Sienna Khan was an enabler for Adam to shift from possibly well meaning into the psycho we see him as today. This was actually really good at first because it added strong irony to how he overthrew her later in Volume 5. But then they went and overdid it with that cringy thrown room interaction between them that gives foreshadowing a bad name.

Oooooh I just had a good idea, what if under Adams it was revealed he had some sort of branding on his face. Then in the next volume we would see in atlas the Faunus that are forced to work in the dust mines also are branded in that way. Boom suddenly we have excellent motivation for Adam to hate humans and it will make his movement more sympathetic even if his methods are wrong
To be honest you're one of my favorite rwby reviewers on TH-cam, while you might be harsh at times at the very least you're also constructive with your criticisms which is more than can be said for other harsh rwby critics who are completely negative without even attempting to give advice on how to improve the show. As an aspiring writer I'll except all criticism no matter how harsh It Is as long as It Is constructive purely negative criticisms with zero attempt at being constructive should and will be ignored

Honestly you could still write Adam as an abusive character and it could still work, you make him unhinged, bipolar sometimes logical and coldly calculated and sometimes emotional and you can still make his obsession for Blake work and write him that way moving forward since there is no actual discrimination against Faunus make it all in his head make him brainwash young poor Faunus and of course the naïve rebellious daughter of the former leader into believing said discrimination and following the bad boy they could have used the whole Faunus discrimination as a way to address the fine line of what constitutes as racism (which would be important today) but that would involve too much good writing which of course we know doesn't exist in RWBY TL;DR Adam could have changed but they executed it poorly
The worst type of villains are those evil for the sake of it or evil just to be hated by the audience it just feels boring when there's nothing them. That's how I feel about Adam.
I don't like good villains who turn in jokes so the hero can beat them easily so no one way in hell Blake got stronger then Adam she didn't train or nothing just one hit thats lame to me!

why didn't they show Adams past, like the main characters are going to Atlas , what does Adam have to do with atlas like was he from there ? I thought about this for many days after the short was released, why didn't we get to see his past instead of stuff we already know ? 😒😒😒😒
Jennifer lopez perhaps its due to this Adam was not wearing a mask at that time (as a kid) thus we would see his face so i guess RT wants to continue the "whats behind that mask" mystery for a little bit longer However you do raise an interesting point about wether or not he is from Atlus
I thought of a backstory for him which would involve him being raised by a swordsman who owned faunus as slaves, but once he grew enough to understand what that means, he became resentful and fought that man which left him scarred. So, if he was from Atlas, we could have him confront this man in this volume. This backstory would show that he didn't suffered from racism, but indulged in and frames his hatred of humanity as disgust for himself.
Okay, Blake fighting Adam and yelling, "Why do you care so much" as she strikes him, only for his mask to break and the scar to be reveled, would have been dope. The Adam short could have been the backstory behind the scar, but we should have gotten a better reveal for it.
How the fuck did they manage to write a show where one of the central driving points of the plot is racism and never actually show the racism beyond a 1 episode subplot in the very beginning?
If anything, they had the potential to make Adam a grey character. If we ignore vol 3 since he was forced by Cinder, he could have carried out as someone whos doing bad things for the betterment of his kind, instead we get a man who becomes obsessed with Blake, going out of his way to kill the original high leader and even killing his brothers and sisters because they no longer wish to follow him.
Adam a character with a lot of potential ended like a simp for a plot device in a stupid ship. RIP Adam, at least he died early to see the shit that RWBY become after that.
Another great video! I think it's too late to justify Adam's motivations now. The show already ruined him from the previous actions Miles and Kerry had him take. In similar fashion, they did the same thing to Senna. You know, how she wasn't all that during the volume 5, but this trailer makes her a badass which ruins her character even further. To improve upon your fixes, cuz your fixes make way more sense, lol. This short could have been used in place of Blake's arc in Volume 5. It would do Adam and Sienna more justice and not completely ruin them both. Plus, Volume 5 would be better. Even if its a slight improvement. Imagine in Volume 5, if Blake is just kept to her being mentioned in the dialogues we got from the rest of team RWBY. You progress through the volume, then Blake just shows up at Haven. As far as the spots where Blake's story arc would have been shown, use the fixed footage of Adam's character short. It would have made better story telling for the Volume itself. To showcase Blake's activities, use her story arc as a side story so people can see what went down. Seriously, Blake's part of Volume 5 didn't do much beyond a quick assessment by the characters at Haven. She brought the police and the Faunas forces with her to thwart Adam. Instead, show what she did in her arc as a side story. Kind of like showing the "Meanwhile" as an in-between volume filler. Honestly not looking forward to too much fro Volume 6 now that I know what the focus is. I hope Miles and Kerry take the opportunity to resolve as many writing issues as they can to bring RWBY around, but I'm not holding my breath. Okay, okay. That's enough from me. Thanks for sharing! Blake's axe punch on Adam was super bs. Like Super Saiyan Blue Kaio Ken x20 level bullshit[Not saying I have a problem with the technique/form in Super, just using it as a measurement. He should have been ready for that they had been fighting together for years. I think they should have went with the original plans to make him morally ambiguous and eventually get redemption, I would find him having silver eyes to be acceptable in this case since it could highlight the potential he would have to do good. With all the critiques of Adam's part in the story in mind I would have made him indifferent to Blake but willing to take her down if she got in the way. I have my fingers crossed that they can salvage him to be a good villain. I feel like he would have had more potential if they stuck with their original plans.

sad thing is that when I saw adam and his spark notes I thought that he really would have been black panther movie killmonger and since he apparently mentored blake I would assume that he would only care about blake because she is basically his successor if things go down south and he dies and nothing else, since blake left there was no point in trying to convince her so he gave up immediately. like all they had to do was make adam good was make him someone with good intentions but done in a horrifying way, executing humans, leaving dismembered bodies around, generally being a menace to those who are against him. BAM done if they want a sympathetic backstory make it so he is branded as a human experiment (put the branding as serial numbers on his forehead or his back) which is where the bulk of his powers come from, faunus are just animals to them so experimenting on faunus is just the same thing as having lab rats to show why he hates humans to that extent, they experimented on him, they turned him into a freak, and he feels that there is no place he can truly belong because of humans.
Imagination Hammer It’s explained in the movie he wants to arm oppressed people over the world, make Wakanda the only superpower in the world and make the world feel the suffering he did. It didn’t really come out of nowhere, it makes sense for his character to do this since he mostly cares about revenge.
Adam is one of Rwby's earliest examples of keeping things a mystery only to realize that it's trash upon reveal. He went from having the potential to become a compelling antagonist(unlike cinder) to a screaming man-child whose main motivation is getting back at his ex...seriously? His squandered potential is even worse than Raven's and Hazel's. I doubt he has the sharingan-I mean silver eyes but i hope he does because it'd be hilarious.
Thats why you dont simply have a racist Anti-villain (supposed due to off screen racism) suffer such a sudden transition to neo-racist villain that doesnt hesitate to kill his own race if they get in his way, Adam should´ve shown moments of hesitation and proper characterization in regards to that, because otherwise he´s no better than Hody Jones from One Piece and Hody Jones was shit, compared to Arlong, that came way before him.

Honestly. It doesn't even look like Adam is really an abuser in the short. Unless you count the "manipulation" when Adam talk with Blake. Most of the Short is about his relationship with Sienna than Blake. It honestly makes Blake look like just a minor person in Adam's life.
Then again. The guy seemingly forget about Blake in Volume 4 despite threatening to hurt everybody she ever loved so that might actually be the case.

I agree with you, after watching this video and thinking about it the whole “Obsessive-Ex Angle” made his character look bad
I agree especially in vol 2, the way that Blake talks about him was more of a relationship from respect than romantic. Heck, I would have believe Blake has more obsession/ huge crush over Adam and not the other way around (it would Illia's line more sense)
Blake's double-axe handle punch not only ruined Adam for me, it ruined literally the whole show. Up to that point I had been willfully ignoring the increasingly evident problems in RWBY's writing but that punch scene was so bad and pissed me off so much that I'd barely even consider myself a RWBY fan anymore.

Adam wasn't hurt, he wasn't in a worse position, he didn't even have a scruff mark, he lost his cool because of the shock of how many Faunus opposed him, and got careless for less then a second.
I could understand if Adam was even remotely bothered by it, but besides his pride there is literally not a single thing that did to him. Him trying to blow up was WAY worse.

Or you know, just decide to take the Relic before inviting the heroes over since they literally had over a week to do so and the Heroes literally didn't know they were there and were just being lazy sitting in the house. Adam, meanwhile, stuck to the plan. He followed orders, was in the right place at the right time, planted the bombs, waited for his allies to come out, and asked them for help, even if he got rejected. On that front, he did everything right, it was solely external factors that caused his failing, namely
1) Blake suddenly having invisibility frames and epic vorpal adamantine +5 fists of Adam's bane for that one second,
2) Ilia being completely invisible because she changed her skin color even though they're in a mostly open area *under multiple light sources*,
3) Ilia being apparently being bomb disposal expert,
4) all the racists in Mistral just taking the day off (seriously, where are all the guys who supposedly hide in the forest just to kill traveling Faunus?)
5) all the politicians in mistral suddenly decide, from their perspective, to let a terrorist army comes in because of the plot,
6) all the people who care about national security taking the day off because of plot,
7) no one calling Leo to check on things, even though they'd have needed to get permission from the Minstralean Council which Leo is a part of to enter Mistral probably hours, if not days ago,
8) Adam's powers and Aura spontaneously not working
9) all the other factors needed for an entire army to roll natural 20s on their stealth rolls and show up without tipping him off somehow (seriously *look at the so-called Mengarean army* , how the fuck did those guys blend in?).

Remember when this vague thing called "aura" used to exist? It had some basic properties in volume 1: it protected you from attacks like an armor, it passively healed minor bruises/cuts over time, your senses would sharpen and you could also channel it through your weapon of choice to do more damage. Man, Blake's double punch must've had more aura than Yang's entire semblance if that was enough to deal with Adam. **rolls eyes**

Adam was one of the most promising and badass villains I've seen from modern day animation. To all of the sudden becoming the biggest btch in the entire series. And it was done in a course of a few scenes.
Those scenes were they show adam going crazy seriously came out of nowhere and was super cringy as hell. It seriously had me "what the hell is wrong with this dude?" No build up, no continuity, just random sht to build up the next worst scene in the entire show that came after.
Blake knocking Adam out was by far the biggest middle fingers Miles and Kerry could've ever done to their fans. It reduce adam from the most fear villain in RWBY to just a random goon with no actual value whatsoever.
Which begs the question "how the hell was this noob able to cut Yang's arm off? If it only took one hit from Blake to put him out?!!"

Hmm, I have mixed feelings there. I still think Arkos and Renora are fine, and I ship Freezerburn pretty hard. However, Adam and Blake should not have been an abusive relationship allegory, at all. That's what Weiss' entire family--Winter included--is for. It shows perfectly how it's a cycle, and how one person can eventually become the sole target of the abuse and neglect if it means everyone else feels safer by jumping in on abusing that person.
Adam and Blake being an abuse allegory could have been cool if only there were two factors; one, let Blake hitting Sun and such be explained as part of the cycle, and characters call her out on it. She faces negative consequences, she realizes this is wrong, as part of her development. Two, show us, the actual, abuse! The short did show him gaslighting Blake, which is definitely a step forward from what we've had so far, but like on-screen Faunus discrimination, this was only a BABY STEP forward.
But even then, that's irrelevant when MONTY DIDN'T WANT THAT. Monty very explicitly stated they had a mentor and apprentice relationship, and that they WERE NOT lovers.
Get rid of Adam and Blake's stupid ex boyfriend thing. Give him the mentor and student relationship that Monty kept on saying on what's going on with between Adam and Blake. Have Adam be the challenge of ideals between him and Blake with him almost convincing her to rejoin him in Volume 3. Show Adam being a former righteous fighter who truly wanted to help the Faunus but years of fighting against Faunus discrimination had his ideals twisted which Blake notices and would eventually be the reason why she left the White Fang.

There are several things I would change in the faunus/Adam story-line.
First, I would actually show faunus discrimination. I would make it happen on a regular basis. And I would show it happening to Adam. Maybe an anti-faunus hate group killed his family or scarred him, forcing him to wear the mask. This would make him sympathetic.
Next, I would have faunus discrimination increase as Adam's terrorism gets more success. Humans would start to fear faunus and isolate them more. This will establish that while his intentions are good, his methods cause a great deal of harm, somewhat like Magneto from X-Men.
Then, I would make it so that Adam was not abusive to Blake and still likes her. That would explain why Adam let her go and didn't peruse her. Then, when she confronts Adam and we see that Adam is the stronger fighter, maybe he actually lets Blake and Yang escape.
Finally, I would have Adam drop a bombshell in his fight with Blake: he is actually holding back people even more radical than him in the White Fang. Adam wants equality with humans and uses violence, but there are those in the White Fang who want to enslave or genocide humans and he is holding them back. Then, he warns Blake that her parents might become targets as they are the least radical White Fang members.
That would give Blake a reason to go back to her home village. I would have her talk to Yang once more and explain that she has to go help her family. Then it would make sense for Yang to be upset that she isn't there rather than her leaving because Yang understands how important family is and why Blake must go.
In summary, I would have made Adam's relationship with Blake tragic for both of them rather than just abusive. The viewer could see both points of view and that they both like each other but, in the end, they are on opposite sides.
Pretty good, I would add with him being the anti-hero third party conflict, like spade slick in homestuck, and have him go after Salem, finding out that she was responsible for killing parents. His semblance, from his father, was also the one that broke the moon
Nice back story, I'm in the camp that doesn't dig his attahment to Blake the least but the angle you bring up could work.
Though I am curious how him being more hands and agressive with humans would hold people back. Wouldn't that enable the behaviour more?

Pretty good however I would drop the part about him holding back a more radical faction of the white. You allude to him being like Magneto earlier and I feel that is what Adam should be drawn inspiration from. The ambitious man who has seen injustice and takes a well-meaning crusade to far. Adding in the radical faction that he is trying to hold back takes away from the overly ambitious angle.
I suppose I could dump my 2 cents as well if I were to write Adams character I would make him sort of a itachi character from Naruto have him pretend to be a bad guy to motivate blake to not be a coward and take more action to stop him the attack on beacon killing seania cutting off yangs arm and the attack on mistrial plus trying to kill her parents would all be thing to push Blake

To be fair, the silver eyes are only known to be an anti-Grimm weapon. Even if Adam has them, it doesn't necessarily change things too much, considering that he's become a Grimm pawn and all. Come to think of it, he's probably going to have to join the Chaos Syndicate, since the White Fang probably doesn't respect him anymore.

Adam also lost a lot of potential since he was pretty much the cause of cause of Yang's PTSD and having her confront the man who took her arm would have been a fantastic moment for drama, if Adam didn't go down like a bitch. Now he's got the Kylo Ren effect of making himself look lamer for failing in such an awful way instead of making Blake look cooler for beating him, which makes everyone he beat look worse by comparison.
Now that you mention it, having Blake defend Yang from Adam, would've been a good way to have Blake redeemed in Yang's eyes...fuck!
It's sad because Adam was one of my favorite characters after the first 3 volumes because he was a threat and there was a lot of mystery and potential around him, but then after waiting anxiously for his reappearance in volume 4, he totally disappointed me in volume 5.
I am crossing my fingers that Volume 6 fix that, maybe not entirely, but maybe still give him a actual good fight.
Don't worry, they'll introduce another cool mysterious villain who is shown to kill expert huntsman, only to go down because jaune sneezes in his general direction in the last two episodes.

Celestial Phoenix if spelled correctly working on fixing rwby videos and so far he makes a proper rwby story even his version of volume 1 and 2 are well written even filling in gaps that weren't filled in the previous volumes.
FanFiction is actually what introduced me to RWBY, Coeur Al Aran fanfics especially. I wasn't thrilled when I realized the actual show was nowhere near close what the fans wrote for the show.

Its about a grimm that got turned into Faunus. A tagline for the fic is "Can a monster have a soul?".
Its amazing really because as of right now he's a well written character. He isnt OP as with other OCs but he isnt underpowered either. Its more of the fact he's a 17 year old Alpha Beowolf in a body he isnt familiar with that limits his combat potential but he is still capable.
Which leads me to the fight scenes which are great to read and easy to keep track of. It's great.
For personality, the process that turned him into a Faunus gave Grimm boy more human like traits. I'll leave it to you for you to know what more human like traits he acquired.

that one black dude I don’t know if you’ve noticed but no one on this show is invincible. Yang loses to mercury. Weiss to vernal. Cinder to Raven. Characters we think are really strong can still lose. Adam has never been hit when facing a foe so him being a glass cannon balances out since he can do ridiculous damage from a single strike. You are acting like Blake’s hit literally knocked him unconscious when all she did was temporarily stunned him. He ran away because he was outnumbered and his plans fell apart.

I really like your ideas, but the fandom would go nuts if this happened. For some reason the RWBY fandom hates complex characters and people would complain that Adam was still abusive to Blake because he's not a lesbian.

So much wasted potential with the White Fang. I’m glad someone who cares about the White Fang more than I do have some tips on how to fix it. If I were writing RWBY they’d have been practically scrapped. Adam would just be a personal villain antagonizing Blake for leaving an organization. But that’s just me, any time I write a group, the point of the group doesn’t matter nearly as much as the individuals in it.
If I were the writers I'd wanna scrap Volume 5 and just do it over again seeing how negative the fan reception to it was. But unfortunately they won't and will continue to ruin characters constantly

Anyway, Adam is still my favorite villain in the show. He's a badass since I saw him in the Black trailer. Yeah...saying "badass" is probably funny now we got the volume 5 *sigh*. The bad writing of Adam (because it clearly is), doesn't change my mind about him. I still think he's an interesting character. I'd like to see his childhood, to understand WHY he hates humans so much. I can understand he's against the faunus discrimination, but there's a deep thing about his backstory...I wish Miles and Kerry could show us this but yeah... I don't think so.

Of all the original character shorts, he was my second favorite character (after Weiss). He became a horrify monster beyond what I could have possibly dreamed in Volume 3.
Volume 5 literally ruined him entirely.

Lord Knightcon I write RWBY fanfics too. I rewrote Sienna’s death to fill someone’s request, and made both Sienna and Adam display fighting prowess rather than him just oneshotting her.
Rooster Teeth should hire you as the writer for RWBY. Honestly, most of the stuff is pretty confusing and getting off for Adam. You manage to fix the mistakes!

I couldn't agree more. When I saw his short, I didn't even have any part of me feel like I cared anymore. They could have shown something happen to him in that short, hence, why he hates the humans. But it was just showing his rise to where he is now.
And after what they did to him in the show, I was tuned out by Adam by then. It is unfortunate. Adam was probably such an highly anticipated villain until now. Now, he's like a baby having a tantrum.

edit: I totally agree with the bulk of this video, I literally do not understand why instead of keeping the mentor and student relationship for Blake and Adam they had to somehow switch it up as an abusive one due to seventeen-year-old speculators that haven't watched Star Wars, I've had my fair share when writing abuse in general, and what I was given was pitiful. Furthermore, if they wanted to push for an Adam romance sooooo badly they could've made a character that is the exact opposite of him, from his ideas to his execution hell even to them being a human that pretends to be Faunus probably to get insight on his whereabouts, then that would've made a whole lot of sense when thinking about the whole bomb stick up would it not? That oh-------, therefore we can be spared of the lackluster attempts of backstory flashbacks between A&B (Adam and Blake) which instead of hearing Blake's side of the story, we can hear Adams'. I give examples so here's one.
Adam: (after he ran off like you described) All of that only to be ambushed!
FF (fake Faunus): ...A-
Adam: They're all brainwashed, they all think humans will understand them! Humans don't care about us! (does something dramatic) and Blake, I thought I could trust her, but like everyone else she betrayed me.

Frankly, Adam is supposed to be the Killmonger of RWBY the one that makes you think "damn he has a point" but also say "you can't do it like that though". The Adam short should've been his past with suffering and abuse by the hands of humans so we as an audience would come to understand his animosity towards humans, hell the most we could've gotten was a slur used by humans to put down Fanus, for example: "Damn Faunto's at it again" (I came up with that on the spot lmao its so bad), to which he gets angry and lashes out, because the word IS.A.SLUR, we should've gotten insight on him as a character and him as a person but we didn't we just got "owo flaswy colwors".
Lastly, I bet my GPA that I could literally break down Adam and make him more appealing to people who actually learned about writing for once, Jesus Christ I'm literally thinking about all the world and character building we missed and for what? Adam being tossed aside like a chewed up dog toy? I knew Adam was going downhill as soon as they said "its an abusive relationship" like it wasn't a few volumes ago where he could give less than a fuck about Blakes whereabouts.

The grim reality that I’m almost positive is what they’re going for is to use Adam’s “abusive relationship” to “scare Blake away” from the thought of dating a dude, then using Illya to “open her eyes” to the thought of dating chicks, then using THAT to lead into bada-bing-bada-bumblebee.

I really like your rewrite. I agree, ex-boyfriend Adam is a stupid concept. I like the more complex idea of Adam. (Such as the one explained by Eruptionfang; that was a pretty interesting way to show Adam and I liked it a lot.) Now I did like the Adam Short, it showed potential (Maybe Adam isn’t ruined yet? Just please no silver eyes!) and it might be one of my favorites. But hey that’s just my opinion. Anyways besides that; I agree with most of what you said. (Oh gosh that scene in Volume 5....UGH. I’m trying to forget it all happened but it left such a huge stain....)

I'll be completely honest, I've been a bit naive when it comes to RWBY. I always liked it, thinking it was great. Granted, I could tell something was a little off in Volumes 4 and 5, but I still liked it; I never really caught on on most of these things. I've noticed more in hindsight, but your videos do help make a lot of things clear, with one important point being made: CRWBY has no idea what they're doing with this series.
I've honestly lost all respect for the show, and don't even plan on watching it in any official way. (I still plan on watching it, because I do genuinely want to see how the story ends.)
Honestly, I'd say not to let fact impact enjoyment, the show irritates me, but I love it because at least there's something to talk about. RWBY has become like the room for me. After every episode I turn to my friends and say 'okay what was up with that?' It's really, honestly so strangely written that I find enjoyment in deconstructing it's oddness, at least!
When Adam said "it's over for all of us" he could've ordered the members of the white fang to attack Blake's army. Sure the white fang was possibly outnumbered, but they had more training than the group Blake arranged.
While that was happening, he and Blake could've had a rematch, which would've been great development for her, as it would show that she's no longer running away from her problems.
But sadly we got a whinny brat who threw a tantrum when his bombs didn't go off.
And in volume 3, like you said the obsessed ex-boyfriend angle didn't fit, especially with him already being established as setting up shop in Beacon at the end of volume 2 (with it becoming a concrete thing in the flashback of volume 3's beginning of the end where he had a base in the foreverfall forest! I mean who said he left it after making his deal with Cinder?)
If I was writing volume 3, I would've made him jadded, with a drive to kill Blake because he wouldn't care for traitors.
And in volume 5, he could've goaded Blake with the loss of Yang's arm, saying something along the lines of "Wasn't it your cowardice that cause your blonde friend to lose her arm?"
Adam is the type of person to say something like that. And the whole Iliya (the faunus that liked Blake because I can't spell her name) thing with her waiting to send her back to Adam would've made more sense if that was the case.
Whew, sorry that this is pretty long. I just had a lot to say about this topic.

I was happy to see some alright fight scenes in the short, but, as you stated, the short itself was jumbled and a bit confusing. The worst part, though, was I couldn't take Adam seriously at all. He proved himself to be more than capable at fighting in just the short alone regardless of other canon, and he just goes down from the lamest punch ever. Wouldn't his aura protect him? Surely, Adam's aura would be up and ready to go during an engagement, especially a high-stakes one at that. I suppose that would make too much sense, or they just wanted to avoid having to animate a fight scene. Probably the latter.
Honestly, an awesome showdown with Adam was a big thing I was looking forward to for volume 5 as it was being released.

Why didn't Adam just follow up by attacking with his sheath after Blake's shadow-dodge in V5? It would've worked in a similar vein to the fight scene in Rorouni Kenshin between Kenshin and Jinei.

Aye, he could have at least countered her attack. She leaves herself wide open with her whackamole attack. However, I think it would be more reasonable to think that Adam would know she would dodge considering she shadow scooted out of the way in V3 and how they were teammates for quite some time (She had to have done this at least once then.); having said knowledge, it would make more sense for Adam to feint an attack and strike once Blake has finished her shadow scooting or do AoE Dust attacks. Something! Anything!
All I’m gonna comment on is that his aura probably was up but aura doesn’t stop you getting knocked back/down by a hit - it just protects you from the hit (and a small hit like a punch wouldn’t make it flash)

Yup you're right. Adam was something to be feared. It was his niche. Then we get to vol 5 and he's no longer dangerous. I get that they wanted to show Blake overcoming her fear of him, but it shouldn't be at the cost of his own character. If anything, they should have made him even more dangerous during that scene. He could have told the faunas that was with him to go all out. Give up their lives for his cause and kill everyone, even if they get killed in the process. Using his crew to kill and runaway. Showing all the faunas there how dangerous he really is, not just taking the belladonna's word for it. That would also justify members of the white fang turning their backs on him, instead of that stupid blow everyone up scene. I really think miles and Kerry need a 3rd writer. I have no expectations for vol 6.
They kinda wrecked him being dangerous back in volume 3 when he didn't bother to try to attack Cinder when all she did was wreck some fodder white fang, which apparently is enough to get him to bow to a human.

She could have forced him to be submissive. We understand the power scale of a maiden vs reg human/faunas. Unfortunately the writers have a bad way of showing it.
Vexed, I haven't been a subscriber for long, but each new RWBY video fills me with a new and deep love for you. Adam had so much going for him, he was a man of few words and plenty action. His treatment in the latest volume was just so...sad, really. I'm suppose to believe Blake, who was mentored by Adam, and who never even finished her huntress training, is at a point where she can stand up to Adam?
Really, it feels like they're writing each volume without any direction for any character. I want to like RWBY, but they aren't making it easier when there are fanfics with more compelling and well written narratives then the official content.

I was at least expecting a Vergil-type character where the ends justify the means, but we got this inconsistent mentor/ex-lover character that loses all of his threat factor in one scene. Such a damn shame. He seemed pretty motivated and had one of the coolest fighting styles/weapons in the show. I'm not even sure if it's possible to salvage him at this point. He's better than Oscar at least.
Adam is Vergil lite and Qrow is Dante lite it seems.
I think Monty intended for Adam and Blake to have a mentor/student relationship, but M&K changed it. I mean it would explain the discrepancies with the early and later seasons. 🤷
If at any point in the story, Vergil suddenly took Adam's place, the show in general would become 10% better.

Before watching: The short was mediocre at best. Yeah, the fights were actually fights, but other than that, the voice acting still sucked except for Sienna Khan, Ilia was just there for no reason plus she looked the same age, and I swear to god if Adam gets a redemption act BEFORE he even does something that makes me afraid of him like in Blake's trailer, I will be mad.
During: I totally forgot that Adam dgaf about Blake in the earlier seasons (1 and 2). Did Miles and Kerry seriously went down the abusive/obsessive bf route? They really made Adam a less terrifying character. If Adam stayed not giving a fudge about Blake and just started trying to kill her just for leaving the White Fang or even go after her teammates as her torture, THAT would be an awesome route for a villain.
During the shorts part: What ticked me off the most about other reviewers for the short, THEY NEVER MENTION THEY WANT TO SEE ADAM'S PAST! They were all gushing over the animation and fight more than questioning about where and how Adam even began going down the route he is on. Damn the fight, where are his parents? Are they dead? Were they actually really passive Faunus not wanting to fight while Adam was, so they banned him? Where was he brought up? Was he bullied or worst by the humans? How did he find out about his aura/sembelance? Why was he at the place with Blake's dad and the rest? Was he actually evil all along and really planned on killing Sienna since day 1? So many questions left unanswered for a short DEDICATED to Adam? That's why I like you the most. You are asking the REAL questions. Also, if Adam is a silver eye warrior or even a human in disguise, I will just leave. Just straight up leave. Don't know where I'm going. I'm just leaving.
After: I love your conclusion and changeups better. It makes sense PLUS if flows better. I just HOPE they make Adam terrifying in v. 6. But I'm bouncing once I see that Blake and Yang are buddy buddies again. Damn the rest.

I like the contrasting lines of Adam’s trailer that are “time to get what we deserved” to “time to get what I deserved”. Also I liked people praising him when he killed that man (makes him sort of like Bakugo from mha). But yeah what’s he gonna do when he shows up to fight team RWBY again? Get double hammer fisted? He also lost his WF, which is like half the reason he was intimidating.

Actually thats a common misnomer, most people who come across as jackassy on camera tend to be more mild-mannered off camera, because people tend to project a persona to make up for what they lack off camera (hense why people who are seemingly nice on camera act like asses off, and people who can see cocky tend to just be overcompensating for a perceived lack of confidence in being viewed)
Or they could just be assholes, it's a 50/50 split.
the way you made adam's story actually be good. I loved it.
The fact that you a fan of RWBY can turn a generic, brooding villain like Adam into a slightly more compelling villain just shows how badly the "writers" of RWBY have botched this character and his arc.
Adam deserves so much better. All the characters deserved better.
Adam is still interesting to me, aside from the terrible ex boyfriend trope he's carrying. I really hope he doesn't have Silver Eyes, I do hope we get to see WHY he hated humans so much. But I hope that it's actually engaging and interesting, rather than average and unjustifiable.

The eyes revile in vol 6 in a fight scene , I think he has one blue eye and has one gray eye it has SCDC ,which Weiss father owns which he hates faunsenset as reviled by Weiss herself in vol 1

I actually really liked Adam. He had a cool design, awesome fighting scenes and was an overall badass villain in the first three volumes. But afterwards his character just changed. In my opinion I think he was kind of morally grey instead of pure evil like how the show and fandom likes to portray. This was because even though he was doing something bad, it was ultimately good in his mindset. Almost like an anti hero but not exactly. He always had a moral code. In one of the flashbacks with Cinder he always valued the lives of the Faunus. When Cinder wanted his help he refused because it was in his words it was "a human cause" and therefore something he didn't care about. Only later when Cinder had the powers of the Autumn Maiden, (I say Autumn because I'm British) and when she was threatening him and his army's lives did he dicide to join her. Adam believed in protecting his own kind. Only in later volumes did that change because then writers messed around with his character, his morals and his entire belief system.
But in the early first few volumes, he always had his own rules on what he thought was fair and he stuck with it. Until the writers fucked up his character and had him be irrational and ruthless by killing his own followers. Also what's up with the writers implying that he and Blake had a romantic relationship? In volume two Blake specifically says that he was "more of a mentor really," The writers messed him up into some kind of weird generic villain that was just made to be killed off. And it's honestly a very undignified ending to his story. Not only is he defenceless when he is killed by having his sword taken and therefore his semblance becoming useless but also that it was uncharacteristic for Blake and Yang. They are supposed to be the heros, they are supposed to be better than the villains, they are supposed to have the chance to kill the villain but don't because they have mercy and they are supposed to show that they are morally higher then the people that they are fighting, showing that death and violence is not the answer.
But now Adam is just left behind to be forgotten. And so many things about him will be left unanswered. For example, no one will ever know how he got his scar, how his past life was before the White Fang and what his true feelings about Blake. To be honest when I watched the short that was made about part of his back story I was a little bit hopeful that maybe he could change for the better and possibly get a redemption arc. Have him travelling alone after he's lost everything and trying to figure out what to do with himself. Almost like Zuko in one of my favourite episodes from from Avatar The Last Airbender "Zuko Alone". Develop his character some more and really get to know him as a person and understand why he felt he had to do what he did. And see the impact of his choices and not only on himself but on others and actually have him grow as a person and learn from his mistakes.
But now that's a chance he'll never get. A story we'll never see and a character with such potential that was ultimately wasted.

Very good. I was very disappointed in what they did to adam in vol 5. You explained it perfectly. He was badass and dangerous. And i was concerned how would the team be able to deal with Hazel, Raven, Cinder, the spring maiden (or so we thought) AND Adam? But he looked like a wuss.... Emotional, couldnt fight, ran like a punk... Not saying he shouldn't have fled...but the way he ran... Not even a flashy escape... He looked like a punk. Sun was taunting him. Sun should have had a HARD fight with him...

Of course they would be fine after all they are the main characters and not to mention Yang on her own can possibly take care of both Raven and Cinder or she is just incredibly reckless/stupid going after both of them all on her own (or maybe she read the script and knows that Raven and Cinder will fight and so it wouldn't be both of them against her)

I think there's more to "good" villains than making them foils to the hero (a take on the hero w/ a different philosophy/circumstance), making them "anti-villains", or making them "sympathetic". The whole "abusive boyfriend" angle could work for Adam, however RT doesn't do it right (they need to think more of a nuanced Joker/Harley dynamic). Adam being a "silver eyes" wouldn't be much of an issue--considering we don't know much about them. I do like the rewrite, however.
I'll never forgive Miles and Kerry for retconning him from Blake's mentor (as per Monty's original vision) to a pathetic 'abusive' ex. He was my most anticipated character for 3 seasons right up until his reunion with Blake "MY LOVE!". I'm genuinely surprised at how many people were won over by that character short. I can't believe people can find it in themselves to give a shit about him after they made him a complete chump

Blake abused the high I-Frame count of her semblance to counter attack Adam, that's how she dodged his attack.
For a brief second there I thought Blake was actually in the short in place of Sienna and not just a still image. XD
Anyway another great video Vexed, keep up the great work, and I like your style when it comes to reviewing and commenting. Below is just a few of my gripes that eat at me every time I even think of the short.
But yeah that axe handle punch, it was quite possibly the worst decision they have ever made, no show like RWBY should have that be a decisive strike at the beginning of the fight. Adam who knows Blake's semblance, knows how it works,knows how she fights, and is a better fighter in every way, he would have slapped her again. The symbolism they tried to pull by showing his plain emblem fell short on me since if he had that, then we see him make the turn into crazy mask wearing murderer, yeah then I could see how that little subtle detail would have been more important, so the style would have had substance. Also Illia, had to be like twelve, thirteen back then? You're telling me she didn't change at all? Or I guess she's a Timelord. Heack Adam is estimated to be at least five years older meaning he was seventeen when Sienna took over, which let me tell ya doesn't paint a very good picture for this whole boyfriend aspect.
Another thing that made me mad was that after the mask drop we see Adam staggering as if he barely escaped a fight with his life, he's not exhausted, he's staggering. Also I'm not gonna lie, Sienna's weapon to me, well it's kinda dumb, and they kinda phoned it in on some scenes, like where she's tanking bullets and people forget how their guns work.

I still feel like that wasn't the original plan given how Blake once referred to him as a mentor. I think the decided to change his character at some point while making Volume 3.
Yet they haven't shown any abuse yet.
They confirm it as abusive, but we have yet to see that during the actual relationship flashbacks.
A lot of people try to back it up by using the scene where he stabbed Blake and cut Yang's arm off, which is stupid. They aren't in a relationship during the time. Blake is merely seen as a traitor and wanting to hurt her actually makes sense.

Wonderful video as usual. I do disagree with one small thing though: We did learn some things about Adam that were "new". They just weren't "Interesting", because like you said: It was a jumbled mess.
-We learned that he pioneered the trend of White Fang members wearing masks that resemble the Grimm. However that scene was stupid because all it amounted to was a bunch of misguided youths gathering to make a simple observation about him before cutting to the future someplace else. If they wanted to make that stick, they should have continued the scene and made Adam lead the other miscreants to a victory, thereby inspiring them by example into adopting their own masks.
-Sienna Khan was an enabler for Adam to shift from possibly well meaning into the psycho we see him as today. This was actually really good at first because it added strong irony to how he overthrew her later in Volume 5. But then they went and overdid it with that cringy thrown room interaction between them that gives foreshadowing a bad name.
That's true but I figured he was the one who started it so it didn't feel like new stuff.

Oooooh I just had a good idea, what if under Adams it was revealed he had some sort of branding on his face. Then in the next volume we would see in atlas the Faunus that are forced to work in the dust mines also are branded in that way. Boom suddenly we have excellent motivation for Adam to hate humans and it will make his movement more sympathetic even if his methods are wrong

To be honest you're one of my favorite rwby reviewers on TH-cam, while you might be harsh at times at the very least you're also constructive with your criticisms which is more than can be said for other harsh rwby critics who are completely negative without even attempting to give advice on how to improve the show. Honestly you could still write Adam as an abusive character and it could still work, you make him unhinged, bipolar sometimes logical and coldly calculated and sometimes emotional and you can still make his obsession for Blake work and write him that way moving forward since there is no actual discrimination against Faunus make it all in his head make him brainwash young poor Faunus and of course the naïve rebellious daughter of the former leader into believing said discrimination and following the bad boy they could have used the whole Faunus discrimination as a way to address the fine line of what constitutes as racism (which would be important today) but that would involve too much good writing which of course we know doesn't exist in RWBY

The worst type of villains are those evil for the sake of it or evil just to be hated by the audience it just feels boring when there's nothing them. That's how I feel about Adam.
I gave 3 other ways besides tragic backstory.
I don't like good villains who turn in jokes so the hero can beat them easily so no one way in hell Blake got stronger then Adam she didn't train or nothing just one hit thats lame to me!
The double-axe handle punch is the worst moment of the entire show... and that includes anything with Oscar, so you know it's bad. Why would they make him look like a pathetic loser and then try to make him a focus and threat in the next volume?! Looks like Volume 6 will somehow be worse than Volume 5
Unfortunately, Volume 6 was even worse. They kicked him to the curb and then murdered him with the blade of fan service shipping.
why didn't they show Adams past, like the main characters are going to Atlas , what does Adam have to do with atlas like was he from there ? I thought about this for many days after the short was released, why didn't we get to see his past instead of stuff we already know ? 😒😒😒😒

Adam was not wearing a mask at that time (as a kid) thus we would see his face so i guess RT wants to continue the "whats behind that mask" mystery for a little bit longer
However you do raise an interesting point about wether or not he is from Atlus
I thought of a backstory for him which would involve him being raised by a swordsman who owned faunus as slaves, but once he grew enough to understand what that means, he became resentful and fought that man which left him scarred.
So, if he was from Atlas, we could have him confront this man in this volume.
This backstory would show that he didn't suffered from racism, but indulged in and frames his hatred of humanity as disgust for himself.
Okay, Blake fighting Adam and yelling, "Why do you care so much" as she strikes him, only for his mask to break and the scar to be reveled, would have been dope. The Adam short could have been the backstory behind the scar, but we should have gotten a better reveal for it.
He had so much potential but the writers don't know how to write so it was wasted 🤷♂️
How the fuck did they manage to write a show where one of the central driving points of the plot is racism and never actually show the racism beyond a 1 episode subplot in the very beginning?

If anything, they had the potential to make Adam a grey character. If we ignore vol 3 since he was forced by Cinder, he could have carried out as someone whos doing bad things for the betterment of his kind, instead we get a man who becomes obsessed with Blake, going out of his way to kill the original high leader and even killing his brothers and sisters because they no longer wish to follow him.
Adam a character with a lot of potential ended like a simp for a plot device in a stupid ship.
RIP Adam, at least he died early to see the shit that RWBY become after that.

Another great video! I think it's too late to justify Adam's motivations now. The show already ruined him from the previous actions Miles and Kerry had him take. In similar fashion, they did the same thing to Senna. You know, how she wasn't all that during the volume 5, but this trailer makes her a badass which ruins her character even further.
To improve upon your fixes, cuz your fixes make way more sense, lol. This short could have been used in place of Blake's arc in Volume 5. It would do Adam and Sienna more justice and not completely ruin them both. Plus, Volume 5 would be better. Even if its a slight improvement.
Imagine in Volume 5, if Blake is just kept to her being mentioned in the dialogues we got from the rest of team RWBY. You progress through the volume, then Blake just shows up at Haven. As far as the spots where Blake's story arc would have been shown, use the fixed footage of Adam's character short. It would have made better story telling for the Volume itself. To showcase Blake's activities, use her story arc as a side story so people can see what went down. Seriously, Blake's part of Volume 5 didn't do much beyond a quick assessment by the characters at Haven. She brought the police and the Faunas forces with her to thwart Adam. Instead, show what she did in her arc as a side story. Kind of like showing the "Meanwhile" as an in-between volume filler.
Honestly not looking forward to too much fro Volume 6 now that I know what the focus is. I hope Miles and Kerry take the opportunity to resolve as many writing issues as they can to bring RWBY around, but I'm not holding my breath. Okay, okay. That's enough from me. Thanks for sharing!

Blake's axe punch on Adam was super bs. Like Super Saiyan Blue Kaio Ken x20 level bullshit[Not saying I have a problem with the technique/form in Super, just using it as a measurement. He should have been ready for that they had been fighting together for years. I think they should have went with the original plans to make him morally ambiguous and eventually get redemption, I would find him having silver eyes to be acceptable in this case since it could highlight the potential he would have to do good.
With all the critiques of Adam's part in the story in mind I would have made him indifferent to Blake but willing to take her down if she got in the way. I have my fingers crossed that they can salvage him to be a good villain.
I feel like he would have had more potential if they stuck with their original plans.

sad thing is that when I saw adam and his spark notes I thought that he really would have been black panther movie killmonger and since he apparently mentored blake I would assume that he would only care about blake because she is basically his successor if things go down south and he dies and nothing else, since blake left there was no point in trying to convince her so he gave up immediately.
like all they had to do was make adam good was make him someone with good intentions but done in a horrifying way, executing humans, leaving dismembered bodies around, generally being a menace to those who are against him.
BAM done if they want a sympathetic backstory make it so he is branded as a human experiment (put the branding as serial numbers on his forehead or his back) which is where the bulk of his powers come from, faunus are just animals to them so experimenting on faunus is just the same thing as having lab rats to show why he hates humans to that extent, they experimented on him, they turned him into a freak, and he feels that there is no place he can truly belong because of humans.
Why is everyone in love with Blake She has a harem,she's edgy, rude overpowered to the point of breaking logic you might as well call her Kat-rito.

Imagination Hammer It’s explained in the movie he wants to arm oppressed people over the world, make Wakanda the only superpower in the world and make the world feel the suffering he did. It didn’t really come out of nowhere, it makes sense for his character to do this since he mostly cares about revenge.
