Our bodies are not meant to take that much food. Im on a 600-850calories a day. Intermittent fasting with a 22/24hour fast and I lost 13kgs in a month. I don’t have cravings for sugar, (I do think of food - now and then, im not gonna lie) BUT, I feel that I focus better, have more energy to workout and can tackle the day being more productive with work, kids etc. 💪🏿🤗

I’m eating between 1000-1500 calories to lose weight.
Eating protein like eggs for breakfast and flling up on veg covered in seasonings with chicken for dinner. Apple or banana for a snack and a cube of dark chocolate to fight off sugar cravings if need be.
Lost 28 lbs in 3 months and don’t feel like I’ve missed out on anything.

Great video! Considering how unhealthy your diet was prior to the challenge, I think you would’ve felt bad even if you did 1500-2000 calories a day. If you’re accustom to a diet high in sugar, your body was going to have symptoms of withdrawal. This happens to people when they drink coffee a lot and go cold turkey.

so i did this. I weighed 95kg 5ft 9 at the start- I didn't experience any of the things this guy did except hunger on the first 2/3 days. I had a lot of protein to keep me satiated. I think his symptoms are coming from sugar withdrawal as opposed to calories or a lack thereof. I've spent the past 3 months maintaining my 18kg loss (in 2 months) and have since restarted the diet to lose the last bit. feel better than ever :)

I did a way more restricted, longer version of this. I did a week fast on water, vitamins, minerals, and 2 cup soups a day which contained my rda of salt.
Then for two weeks I had the same but two canned soups instead of cup soup.
Then two weeks after that I had two fajita or chili bowls with rice. Which a gradually increased the portion size of after another two weeks. But still under 800 calories a day.
I lost 50lbs over 2 months. And then another 5lbs in the month after that as I gradually discovered my required calorie I take to maintain my weight at that point.
I didn't experience any of the things he said he did. I felt hunger, but quickly learn that it's fleeting. I had cravings but I learnt that these were just my old habits coming back and I could just create new habits.
He likely wasn't getting enough salt or some specific vitmains/minerals.
The key is to make sure your body is getting everything it needs, and that doesn't have to include calories, whe. Your body has plenty of calories as stored fat. You just have to give it na oportunity to use up that fat by not constantly eating.
Most of the advice at the end of this video about how people shouldn't do what he did and its not healthy is not true at all. Other than perhaps he should have been taking some suppliments there's nothing unhealthy about letting your body burn its fat stores.

Generally soups contain plenty of salt too which meant i was getting enough electrolytes but you can also have just a gram of salt in a glass of water if you start to get any symptoms of lack of electrolytes like muscle cramps, headaches,...etc which i never did but thats the one of the most common issues to arrise from eating little food and drinking plenty of water.
Only things to be careful of is it fat soluble vitamins are able to be stored in the body, so those are the ones you can get too much of. So you may want to get your levels checked by a doctor after a few weeks to make sure you arent taking too much of something.

For us night owls who sleep past breakfast, this is a lot easier. I couldn’t imagine having to get up at breakfast time and having to split my 1,200 cals across three meals instead of two. I usually wake up at about 12, eat at 2 and eat again about 8 and take a low fat snack to munch on through the night. That’s what I’ve always done, but just the contents of the meals have changed. If someone is awake longer then me, I wouldn’t recommend this diet. As calories is energy, and he probably felt unwell bc he seemed to be up quite early and asleep quite late, and his body wouldn’t of been getting the energy it needed. But for us people who, well, sleep a lot, we’re building up that energy still.

Just so anyone looking though the comments knows, a 1200 calories diet does not have to be this hard. Obviously you have to take into account your age, weight, gender, height, level of movement etc. but it can absolutely be a sustainable and even a healthy way to eat. Some ways to make it easier would be upping the amount of protein to keep you make full and give you more energy, and focusing less on the “heathy foods” while upping the amount of low calorie vegetables. This would help you have a little wiggle room in your calorie budget so that you could allow yourself to have that cake, chocolate, or ice cream. Also try taking away (or limiting) these sugary foods at a much slower rate and kind of weaning off of them slowly would help with the I NEED CHOCOLATE NOW thoughts and feelings. 1200 calorie diet is not for everyone but for certain people it can be the only way they can lose weight or even maintain the same weight. But of course ask your doctor before drastically changing your diet.

It depends on what you mean by metabolism. Your metabolism doesn’t just burn calories, it is responsible of several life maintaining system in your body. But if you are talking about your BMR (Basal metabolic rate) then technically yes. If you lose weight eating this way then your BMR will go down (the amount of calories your body burns at rest). This is generally a good thing, especially if you’re over weight. It is just a result of your heart and other organs not needing to work as hard to keep you alive. If your goal is to lose weight then you will inevitably slow your BMR but the rest of your metabolism will not likely be affected.

I go to your channel for the thylacine stuff. Which is terrific, and you are nicely evidence based, not willing to kid yourself into believing something because you really want it to be true, and I respect that.
I’m writing about your diet efforts, because for ages I struggled with food cravings pushing me around, and doing sensible diets but regaining all the weight the moment I tried for maintenance. I broke this cycle with a simple keto diet from “Why we get Fat” by Gary Taubes. Not an easy read (he proves his point, then overproves it, then re-overproves it...but I find that reassuring) and his keto advice was a great way to get started. I don’t do keto, now, but I continue with a combination of low-carb and intermittent fasting that is simple and brainless and effective.
IFFF you find yourself regaining weight the moment you start adding foods back into your diet, and this is discouraging, do look into this. It’s the first dietary “freedom” I ever really experienced. I’m rooting for anyone slugging
it out with this problem. I thought I could never give up carbs, but now, I can never give up freedom.

Try to hit your goal that day +/- 50 or so calories, to get your stomach and mind adjusted to portion sizes. And try eating foods that are high in fibre to help fill you up :)

A lot of people don't talk about how your body transition when you are losing weight or trying to lose weight the first week is challenging because your body is trying to understand why it is changing and get used to the new normal, which is getting healthy. adding exercise as simple as walking everyday rabbits for 30 minutes or 1 hour will really help also vitamins protein smoothie you have to replace those energy to something so vitamin A vitamin C vitamin D B12 probiotic eating fruit keep your immune system strong will give you more energy but I think the way you did it was not the proper way

Hey brother just want to say that you felt that way because your body needs to adjust to your new diet. Do a month eating 1650 calories a day and keep in mind if you go for a run and burn 200 calories thats 200 extra calories you can eat !! I love your personality and content keep it up

I used to fast as well as go very low in my calories while dieting, but then I learned that going too low with your calories usually guarantees muscle loss. Even just going 200 cal below your usual diet can do wonders. If anything try a high protein low cal diet. Great video.

During one part of this video, a bit of web with a dead insect was hanging off Cookie's arm.
This idea probably wouldn't be a big issue if you did it one week a month to counter binge-eating for holidays and whatnot. You could also do it a day a week as well. Either way, you'll reduce your food bill. But yeah, not sustainable long-term because "only eat x calories per day" says nothing about how you deal with cravings and energy levels. You should be able to enjoy your food. If there is that feeling that you are losing out, then it makes the experience more of a chore.
As for specifics, some people have used carrots as a sweetener for cooked food. There are obviously other low-carb alternatives beyond this but it is a matter of preference. What do you enjoy eating? Lots of meat? Lots of buttered or fatty food? Sugar addiction? What foods are available in your area? Are you willing to start a garden to grow food that isn't cheap or is unavailable? How do your energy levels change throughout the day? There are a lot of variables to take into account when you decide what to put in your stomach.
If you can find that sweet spot that allows you to feel full without feeling bloated, you are doing well. An example is pearl barley. It swells when cooked and does an awesome job of thickening soups. The nutritional information is quite good with one website citing 354 calories per 100g of uncooked, hulled pearl barley. Add in some meat, garlic, onion and some other veggies along with some salt and pepper and you have a good meal that doesn't make you feel like a rabbit. Some spices give a sweet aroma and taste without the calories, such as Allspice which I have started (oddly enough) adding to soups and stews. Some folks also reduce their sugar intake by having unsweetened herbal teas instead of soda. Pick one that you enjoy and it can be a pleasant alternative to soda. Sometimes it will take some experimentation, but I've found some really enjoyable alternatives during my dabbling. I just need to follow through with the exercise side.

1200 calories per day is not enough! I’m a woman and my height is 171cm. In the past 3 months I have lost over thirty pounds eating 1700 calories per day (sometimes 1800). Do not restrict too much or you will get sick

  • @xin7erno14

Good video, I do have to say that 1200 kcal can be largely beneficial. I managed to lose 17 kilos as a 13 yo with it so I definitely do recommend it just try to eat more mass and protein as protein can have a thermic effect of 15-30% and fills you up faster. The tiredness will cease within a few months completely and when paired with intermittent fasting or a ketogenic diet hunger almost completely goes away.

1200 calories per day is not sustainable for his age/height/weight. I mean you just said it yourself, you did it at thirteen! He’s a grown man! Given what he was probably eating before he started this diet (probably around 3000 calories per day) he could have just cut down to 1800 calories per day and still lost a lot of weight over a month or two

When you have a food addiction it's really hard to stay off junk food and stuff, i mean reaaally hard. Hopefully i can loose another 50-60ish lbs and i'll be happy

What people need to realize when the cut down so dramatically is that they need to supply themselves with electrolytes. This will help combat the headaches and foggy feeling. I buy electrolyte powder packets and make a smoothie for breakfast and put them in my smoothie for my day. It helped tremendously when I changed that one detail

Only problem is that you're eating multiple meals that are all low calorie, and repeatedly triggering your hunger hormone (ghrelin). To eat something so small, start to build up your ghrelin, and then force yourself to stop? Complete suffering.
The only thing that works is something sustainable, that you enjoy. I use to think OMAD was completely crazy, but I was holding on to a lot of "it's totally unhealthy!" and thought it was starvation. Was totally wrong. 4-6 small meals a day is suffering.
You should try this challenge again with OMAD if you want to do any type of calorie restriction, even at 1200 it's a million times more sustainable than what you were doing here. That, and don't get too obsessed over health food, you can still enjoy chocolate/cake/icecream/etc, just in a smaller amount like 300-500 calories. I would suggest a minimum of 1500-1800 calories and 30-60 min of light exercise (that you actually enjoy) a day.
