Thanks for this - nailed it exactly after 3 different shops came up empty handed. Lots of opportunities to spend hundreds, but a little digging led me to you - Girls kick ass! I replaced spark plugs, tubing, cleaned all the bits... nothing. 15 minutes to drive to Autozone and install right there in the parking lot an poof, fixed. Especially after hearing a mechanic telling me "30 years under the hood and I've never been quite this stumped - get it out of here"...

That's what makes me sick about these repair shops. They charge a fortune and screw people every which way imaginable, but if there's no code, a lot of them have no clue how to fix anything. No diagnostic capability whatsoever, and these are people that average folks rely on. I've even had multiple "professional mechanics" tell me things that are just flat-out wrong based on what the internet provided (which turned out right). I'm glad you got your problem sorted, and kudos for going out of your way to share the repair with others.

Bless you! I replaced mine today, $50 and it runs like new. The only problem is I was so sure my 2001 Escape was toast I bought another car. So, my bill was actually $18,050 total.

I'm so close to buying a new car ... I hope I don't have to. I have a 2003 Ford escape and it sometimes has a rough idle and also rough while driving when the rpms are going between 1k to 3k. Have you had that problem?

Your video helped me get started on over $450 dollars in self repairs. I must've saved at least $4500 easily. Thanks for making this video! All of my troubles started with a bad idle that led me to overhauling a bunch of stuff on my '02 Escape. Your instructional video inspired me and I appreciate that. Super cool! :D

This was outstanding. Thank you for taking the time to document this. This video just saved a friend of mine ~$300 versus having a shop do it.

Thanks for sharing this video! I'm replacing this part on my car tonight! Rough idle even after new spark plugs and intake gaskets. Check engine light IS NOT on, no codes showing up. I love working on my car myself and its great to see other Escape Ladies out there! Check out the Ford Escape Owners Facebook page...great resource for trouble shooting, etc.

good job. the dealership would have charged you a ton to replace this and would have said it was an issue to diagnose. you go girl.

This is the problem that I had, cleaning it with throttle body cleaner worked great. ($4 fix from Napa)

The Escapes and Tributes are notorious for these IAC valves getting gunked up with carbon. Its such an easy fix though as you've shown in the video. Good job. The dealer or mechanic bill would have been big.

I just wiped mine out with a paper towel and tapped it with a wrench lightly and it worked!
So you could probably clean it out and see how long it lasts for if you can't get a new one. The only thing that it could cause is an inconvenience if you are far from home.

I made this video 3 years ago and my Escape has never had an idle problem since!!! That should have been the first thing Ford checked when I took it in. They could have cleaned out the IAC to see if that would fix it. They said it could be any of 3 things. If I had to do it again I would clean it out first with a can of carborator spray cleaner. If that didn't work, then replace it. It was a good experience, however. (I don't do cars except to stay on top of oil and fluid levels and tire pressures!)

I have 2001 ford escape that was displaying similar problems, but finally through Code today.AUG 19/14 PCM code P1507, I didn't replace it. I just unbolted the unite like you did and flipped up side down. filled it up with Mineral Spirits and let it sit for 2-3 hours it seem to clean up fairly well. with a small brush i cleaned out residual carbon build up and sprayed WD40 let it sit for a few minuets. also checked see if the plunger moved freely it did. replaced IAC and reset Code. Car started up with AC on MAX with no issues, retested when the engine was Colder as it was removed while hot. Same result I use a USB OBD II link with my laptop to connect with Fordscan and the IAC showed normal operation...If it codes again I'll just replace the unit.

Well done Mennenann. Initiative is the decisive factor between the sexes in my humble-most opinion. I was raised by a single-mother, a hard-working self-motivated woman. I know first-hand that women are up to any task if they so choose to do it.

I bought a new one and replaced it. You can clean out the old one also, but as I said in the video, I bought a new one.

Hows your SUV working now? It have been maybe 5 months since you changed it. So hows the SUV working.
My problem on mine is when starting the engine it sounds like it is shocking and wont start Normal. I am also a girl with no experience in this. I concern is that If I buy this one and doesnt fix the problem.

You need a new mechanic. Glad your ford is running better. the old valve could have been cleaned with carb cleaner for under a bucks worth. Just keep it in mind as they can dirty quicker than you think. I did it on a 2002 Escape, worked like new.

Another common problem with similar symptoms is the MAF sensor...sometimes you can just get away with cleaning it.
