i have this exact same problem with my 02. i have cleaned the MAF with no change, so suspected the IAF. good tips to check and perfect timing for me ! thanx for an informative video! )-:
good vid. the only thing that troubles me was I didn't see you dry off the mass air flow sensor...i'v seen techs fry the sensor because it was still wet when started up...unless you got deep pockets, that's something to be aware of. good video on how bad those iac motors get. oh, and I thought it was cool that shortly after watching one of your vids about excessive ac ripple can affect vehicle operation...I had a 3.0l tarus with a rough running with random misfire...ac ripple was at 700+milivolts, unplug the connector from the alt and ran smooth. that vid was a refresher to me to look outside of the box when most of the bases are covered...oh and don't let that new scanner hang too far over the fender..ya never know, i'v seen bad things happen...
The MAF in my mother in laws 95 taurus was messed up. Car died on her the day after she had her oil changed. The shop told her next time in she should have her air filter replaced as if they had looked at it and thought it was getting dirty. After getting towed home I looked at the filter to see if it was in fact dirty. Well some chip monks were making a home in there. I cleaned it all out and put it back together and still no start. I took filter out again and this time tried to start it without the filter and it started. Took the MAF apart and some of the chip monks insulation for their nest got lodged in the MAF. A little air and a reinstall and the mother in law was on the road again, no thanks to Willie.
The second you showed the iac valve i thought "Oh shit", my mate had the same problem on his wifes ford ka, the valve looked identical. The very professional test we gave it was to hold a large screwdriver by its blade, then smack the iac valve with the plastic handle end LOL :-D. Yup tickover dropped to normal, professional testers lol :-D. They are a crap design, sometimes a clean fixes them.
Good job Tim. It quickly returned to normal idle after the IAC was replaced and reset. I'm considering purchasing a Snap-On Solus Edge. How do you like yours?
I really like the scanner. Its light and fast. I still have the verus for the lab scope functions but this was well worth the investment since I was looking at roughly half the cost just to update the verus. One complaint so far. The cables are cheap plastic and I have broken both ends of the cable already. My verus cables never did this even after ten years of hard use.
No, if I had the pass thru device or NGS tool I could. Being such a small shop It wouldn't be cost effective to even have the equipment really. If I had a couple other techs I would certainly do more of that.
2002 Ford Explorer is the number one vehicle on "Carcomplaint.com". The Escape seems to be a similar model. No point to that comment, just blabbing while I watch you. (ha ha) I tried to register on Identifx as a DIY'er and I never got a response. I'd sure like the ability to get on that web site. I'm going to try again. Great diagnostics Tim.
Dr. Tim - After eating 3 lbs of medium to hot green chili with 42 bean burritos and 2 12 packs of Miller Lite, I experience the need to buy new 10 pk packages of BVD's. What is the reason for that and is it curable?
I have this problem but I have the 4 cyl. version. Just got it back from the shop after new AIC install and they couldn't get it dialed in properly. It's worse than when I brought it in. It was running fine until, at speed (45-60) I'd begin to decelerate. Pushing in the clutch, the engine would rev making it harder to slow down. Now since the new AIC unit, it's all over the place. After 2nd gear, its pushing rpm like crazy and then at a stop will lower till the engine cuts out. That's never happened in the 4 years I've owned the vehicle. Practically undrivable. There must be an answer. SERENITY NOW
I pray dis what wrong with my 2001ford escape.. cuz it idle up high.. and it just want to take off while I'm driving...😂😂 It be wide open running while it in park.. thanks I pray dis it..
Good to see another vid from The Car Doctor. Thawing out a car here today was not a issue as we hit 88 degrees today.
Nice to see you again Tim and glad to see those fuel trims are under control. :)
Thanks Ed, fuel trims are happy and idle is smooth!
Great diagnosis Dr. Tim! Another happy patient ;)
Excellent work, nice catch on the fuel trims. Going above and beyond again.
Thanks, I figured we were right there and might as well spray some cleaner on it. Worked out well. Helping save the environment one repair at a time!
Cool video. It's good to see you again. I am happy you are doing well. I always look forward to your videos.
Thanks, this was older footage that I just got around to editing. Hope to get some new material published soon.

The car doctor looks like the captains brother on the "wizard" crab fishing boat!
Welcome back Tim. Hope you enjoyed Fairbanks. Nice diagnosis & repair & glad to have you back. When you were pulling the sled were you leading :D
Thanks, I like being the leader of the pack!

Thank you, I broke my scanner cable today. Its cheap plastic. My verus cable never broke after ten years of abuse. Dropping it would really suck!
nice diagnosis and repair
Thanks, seems to be working good now. Thanks for tuning in!
The out patient depth is in control, things are lookin good, prepare for lunar landing lift off and we have ignition !!
One giant leap for technicians across the universe!
Good one Tim !

Very interesting case. Those squirrels nests can drive you nuts especially when they leave nuts in your ride.
Not two2 mention that other big nut.
That is the nut behind the wheel.
Shh don't tell the mother in law.

I almost got out my Ford tool (large hammer) to test this one. hehehe

Thank you for your reply!
Mine is a 2007 do you think the high idle could be the same type of problem?
can the Solus do a pcm update? enjoyed the class!

Yes. Eat a salad!
Very easy repair
Yes, I probably over complicated it too. But that's how we end up with a 23min video instead of a five minute video. :) Thanks for dropping in!
Cool
excellent !!
Thank you!
