  • People often buy new tires and immediately drive them as hard as possible. That's not a good idea. Today we spend a lil bit of time talking about why you need to break in your new tires, like the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, and just how many miles are needed to get the oil and additives off the top layer of the tire. But what do you want to learn more about? Let me know below!

    as a tire technician, unless you're doing your own tires at home, the tires you find in a tire shop are usually 3-6+ months old due to international transport times, so anything about oil is likely not there

    • @thoubias
      @thoubias ปีที่แล้ว +48

      @@paudan1284 You are right, although I think the car tires probably have similar percentage of oil coating on the shelf, but with bigger contact area and significantly heavier weight causing more traction, they probably have much less noticeable problems with it.
      Motorbikes being lightweight and agile react to the slipperiness way more, hence on a motorbike you tend to avoid even road markings especially when driving in wet conditions, while a car usually cares nothing about them.
      Also with motorbikes you gotta "break in" also the sides, not just the top, as you steer by leaning the bike side to side. So just driving straight is not enough, you also gotta lean the bike to the side and another at some point.

    I work in the Michelin factory that produces the pilot sports they use a silicone derivative to keep the molds from rusting with the steam and to make removal of the tires easier. This substance is non toxic and I’ve personally applied it many times it almost looks and feels like coconut oil. Being that the pilot sports tread pattern is relatively simple compared to many others produced no part of the tire generally has a hard time getting out of the mold so it’s only used as a preventative agent for rusting

    Great advice. The oils from the mould are gone after several miles or so, but you still need to bed the tyre in before it starts to grip as it's intended. The oils from the mould very slippery, and the car should be driven accordingly so. Bedding in is totally different, this can literally take anywhere between 100 miles and 500 depending on the tyre, the driver and the car. On high performance cars this only usually takes 200 miles, but the difference in performance once bedded in is huge.

  • @SKOMPAS

    What tire manufactures don’t was you to know, the more gentle the first 500 miles the longer the tire will last in the future no matter how hard you beat on it. For a performance tire with not just about release lubricant, the tires come very soft when they are new and harden up with some gentle heat cycles, thinking of it like gently cooking your tires

    I took my Yokohama AVS intermediate to a shop where they true the tire. They shave the tire instead of adding weight to it the most precise wheel balancing you'll ever have not only that, but the tire will wear perfect because it is truly round.

    The purpose of that oil is to prevent the tire from dry rotting if it’s still new and not being used basically like air in chip bags to keep the chips fresh until opened

    I can say this is true. I have a f250 got new 37s and i was turning on a green light and I hit the gas and started spinning and managed to power slide the truck and it rarely does that

    Anything ON the tread is gone after 5-10 miles. But anything in the sipes or deep grooves may take take driving a dirt road or hard rain to get rid of.
    (But that stuff's not affecting you, anyway.)

    I had gotten new tires of my si (that i drive in the mountains), and it was completely hard to use my vehicle as it was too simplery and some guy thought he was punking on me. After driving to and from work and wherever else i might go, i went back and the tires were gripping famously. Tires do need a break in.

    My new rears needed 500 miles. Did 2 side step (attempts) burn outs. Then drove somewhere that was about 270 miles away, then drove back. On the way there they were still pretty slippy. On the way home they gripped up.

    i just do a large burnout until i see sparks coming out.. sometimes a lil slippy but it works

  • @AUS_GAMER
    @AUS_GAMER ปีที่แล้ว

    I usually just spin the oil/lube off. Smoke up the tyres 1 or 2 times, then they grip just fine. (On a race track of course, or a private road)

    Modern tyre manufacturers do not use any form of release agent as it is regarded as a contaminant on the surface. I worked for a large Italian company for 40 years and release agents used to be sprayed on the surface before curing but that stopped about 30 years ago. Breather hairs are no longer a problem either because my company fitted microscopic valves in the breather holes which were effectively closed by the migrating rubber.

    For new tires to last leave them for a week or 2 in the sun , mark one side as you need to flip them over every new day , this will help cure the tire faster , used to work on a underground mine and tires that was brand new never lasted very long as the tire never got hot enough to cure but the tire's that saw sun for a week or more lasted 5 times longer.

  • @slikskys9773

    Back years ago this would be true. Modern tires don't have oils but they still don't grip because they need to be broken in. The surface of a new tire is smooth and doesn't grip the road as well as a rough broken in tire

  • @ApSOfficial27
    @ApSOfficial27 ปีที่แล้ว

    I sand them until smooth, and apply oil to tyres. It's so smooth.

    I usually do a 15min ride on the twisty rural road home from the dealer, they pretty much worn in then. Once I can do a wheelie I know I can rag on the tires enough to get me knee down (motorcycle just incase that wasn't apparent)

    motorcycle tires are the same, i used to work on bikes for a living and every shop i worked at would do a short burn out or a ride around the block to get the lubricant off as best as possible with out getting bitched at by the customer for an extra kilometer on the odometer. i prefer the ride around the block because the front tire is your steering and the burn out leaves lubricant on the front.

    default behavior when having my motorcycle's tyres replaced, drive careful the first five kilometers, and then relax so at 40 Km you take your first corner with your pegs on the tarmac. That's on my goldwing. In summer it's the same, but 20Km.
