What Is Rev-Matching? Manual Shifting!

  • What is rev-matching in a manual transmission? The idea is if you want to shift to a lower gear in a manual transmission vehicle, rev-matching allows for a smooth shift. For a given vehicle speed, the higher the gear you’re in, the lower your engine’s speed. So to downshift from 4th to 3rd the engine speed is going to increase. To compensate for this, the shift is as follows: you push in the clutch, blip the throttle (raising the engine speed to match the next gear), shift from 4th to 3rd as your engine speed climbs, and then let out the clutch. It’s easier on your vehicle, and doesn’t upset the car’s balance while shifting.

      In the UK we wouldn't even touch the accelerator to shift down your in high revs in 4th clutch then break. Shift down quick. Speed of vehicle has come down but revs is still high enough.
      Same result but all wear goes on breaks without grinding up gearbox or clutch burning.

    I learned rev matching in car from riding motorcycle. If we ride/drive so much, It's kinda intuitive to have a smoother downshift, tbh. I rev match back then even without knowing there's a thing called rev match lol. Simply because i want a smoother down shift. As soon as i understand how clutch, throttle, and gear shifting works, i kinda knew intuitively how to blip and have a smoother downshift. If you want to reduce wear on the synchros as well, let out the clutch shift to neutral then blip the throttle, then clutch in slip into gear smoothly no resistant clutch out.
    Or if you are sure you can do it over and over again that everytime the gear stick slides in without any effort, you dont need to use the clutch either.
    The clutch is a compensation for inaccuracies, and for starting from a standstill

    And is a skill any trucker who drives a stick shifter have, they always need to rev match the transmission to get in gear, otherwise they "miss" the gear, they have two options, both rev matching, the first one is double clutching (double clutch at first gear, for upshift clutch neutral clutch gear, for downshift, clutch neutral throttle clutch gear), and "floating" (double clutch at first gear, rev, and just before letting go the throttle, pull the stick and let it down to the next gear on the right rpms, if you "miss" one, you can't just press the clutch and put it on gear, you need to rev match your speed and gear to the propper rpms, once you dominate it, is pretty easy to do

    In the majority of the time when you shift into a lower gear it means that you have to slow down too (turn or getting of the autobahn) in which case you would not rev match but brake, therefore your car speed is lowwer and matches the enginespeed again. Rev matching in itself only applies when doing a pull or you want to overtake someone then yes but this is taught to every beginner her in germany during driving lessons....

    • @Onyourbiketoo
      @Onyourbiketoo 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@coreyduma325 whilst DDC is not necessary with a synchro gear box, just like ‘rev matching’ is not necessary, it is beneficial to a smooth transition. At 3.50 he explains that the middle sector of DDC will transition from everything running at different speeds to everything running at same speed. At 5.25 onwards he explains that with the clutch released everything is at a different speed. The synchro will then match 3rd gear speed (going at one speed lower than engine speed) to the output gear (which is going at diff speed) so it’s all about synchronising the teeth, not the speeds. Then let the clutch out and the 3 speeds (engine, layshaft, diff) will equalise. If you let clutch up in neutral then engine and trans will be blipped all to the same speed which you will forecast to be the speed needed to prevent surge from the diff/drive. The collar on the synchro will only match the position of the teeth it will not change the speed of the layshaft up or down. Single blip on engine will take care of most of the surge by a downshift whilst a blip under DDC will put all surges, including trans surge, to the bare minimum. Jason clarifies that synchro boxes don’t need DDC, just like a single clutch and blip is not needed but it all helps .. hope that helps you investigate further and rewatch Jason’s excellent video… he really is very good.

    The lurching is actually the biggest braking you can get from down shifting. As thats mostally always the reason why you downshift. You could just as well let go of gas, and hit the brakes saving you fuel

    Fun fact: you also need to rev match when shifting a gear up. Obviously, you need to lower the RPM, to about the max torque for your engine.

    Rev marching saves on clutch, it’s more comfortable, unloads the engine and gearbox, sets up for acceleration afterwards..
    But Jason, why are we here, aren’t we going electric with no gears and silent driving, no emissions? The sky should be green by 2030.

    Wait, are people driving manuals just randomly shifting into gears without accelerating or braking first? You do that on a motorcycle and learn real fast to rev match. I guess when you start right away with cars, you don't learn these things.

    For the right rev match just remember each gear has a 1000 rpm difference. So rev up 1000 rpm to shift.
