@@AlexMartini. Question, what about a newbie with support? 19yo Looking into getting an early year 335i, I don’t have a whole lot of knowledge or experience myself however my cousin owns a European specialty shop, and I work for a dealership organization that owns a large and well operated BMW dealership (I’m only saying this because we all know how dealers can be). So with that said do you think that changes things a bit? Or is it still a no go? Trying to do as much due diligence before making a decision on any car let alone one that’s rather notorious…😅 Thanks in advance Alex!
Oh important Edit: Not planning on trying to make any modifications to it if I was to get it save for some wheels, tires, suspension- But seriously I’m an OEM+ kinda guy and I’m just looking for a new daily to take out that will keep up with my friend’s e39 M5.

@@griffins750 if you work on cars already just do some research and you’ll be fine. N54s can be great if you aren’t afraid to work on them yourself.
When you are thinking about purchasing a vehicle consider things like:
      Have the turbos been replaced?
Does it have index 12 injectors?
Does it need an oil pan gasket/valve cover gasket or oil filter housing gasket?
      Fuel pumps and water pumps
You get the point, there are some common issues with these engines, but they can be great if you are particular about what you buy and due your research/budget for issues down the line.

The standard modified car here is a Volvo. 240, 740, 850, V70... Don't matter, they're all lowered with a reciprocating saw to the springs, hole drilled in the exhaust before the muffler, cheapish wheels, yellow/smoked lights, and faketaxi stickers in the window. Bonus point if there's a subwoofer installed the laziest way possible in the trunk playing the most obnoxious music they could find.
Then they hang out at closed supermarket parking lots or McDonalds.

  • @kraagnjilwulf1413

You missed the Ford Mustang. I picked up an Sn95 for 2k, and I'm looking at about 10k to swap in a built truck engine. Even with the engine swapped it's less than the cost of 90% of the cars I see at meets. And it can already out corner most of them, after I'm done with it completely, projected costs are looking sub 15k and it'll have Corvette suspension to keep it on the ground, and a Chevy truck engine to keep it at the front of the pack. My friend bought a Nissan G37 a couple months ago for 12K, another one bought a built Subaru BRZ for 20+k (funny story, it threw a rod through the block pushing sub 400hp, on an engine that was supposedly built to handle 700+hp). A different one of them used to have a BMW E46, before it blew the transmission, he told me it cost ~16k. And one of my friend owns a collectors item of a Subaru Impreza and claims it's worth at least 25k. 45% of the cars I see at meets near here are Subaru WRXs 2015 and newer, which have cost people I know a minimum of 25k, and a few Acuras, my friend sold his old one for 13k. If you want cheap project cars, literally every choice you just said was mediocre at best.

Check out some of the fiero builds. They're stuck at a..... Weird place putting unnecessary motors in them, but it's easy to see they have insane potential.... Think about it. The body in itself doesn't rust, the floor pans do but they're easy to replace, inexpensive, they have a crazy amount of motor options to install, all you have to do is connect the two chassis to get a lot of strength out of you're overall ride, lightweight, easy to rebalance and both transverse and longitudinally mounted engines are both commonly done. They can fit all they way from a 454 to 1.6 in them. Even a 1J is Easley doable. The 88 even comes good suspension style for the car in double wishbone if I remember right. It's like the muscle car version of the MR2

I wouldn’t recommend shooting for huge power with a first Gen but there’s a big community (not as big as Honda) behind it where you can make up to 300 horsepower reliably with a manual Veloster Turbo. If you have more money to spend, the 2nd Gen RSpec Veloster or Veloster N are also great platforms with more tune ability with the 2.0 Turbo Engine.
