- In today's video we try to find out whether you can beat Sonic Adventure 2's Hero Story WITHOUT Collecting Any Rings!
Phew, now this was a long one! The next video will be part 2 of this Sonic Adventure 2 Challenge Series when we take on the Dark Story, to see whether it's possible to beat it without collecting any rings. As was the case with part 1, this will take me a few weeks to put together and release given the sheer amount of content that we need to cover so I hope to bring it to you asap!
We have recently SMASHED the 1K mark and I want to thank each and every one of you who have took the time to support this channel, words cannot describe how much it means to me and I hope we can continue to grow to bigger and better things from here! I can't wait for Sonic Adventure 1, or Sonic Adventure 2 maybe I can! Can you beat Sonic Adventure 2 Battle without collecting a ring? I guess I could always do so in Sonic Adventure DX; or Sonic Adventure 2 battle, Shadow The Hedgehog is my favorite character, especially his battle against Sonic the Hedgehog, like Super Shadow vs Super Sonic, or Super Shadow vs Eggman! Same with Tails and Knuckles, and even Sonic The Hedgehog!!! Sonic... Did you guys read those Sonic Frontiers Leaks? Insane right?! What about Sonic Origins or Sonic Prime? Maybe even the Sonic Movie and Sonic Movie 2, I might do a Sonic Movie 2 Review when it comes out, my favorite port has to be Sonic Adventure 2 battle and I hope we get a Sonic Adventure 3 someday. For sure I'll be doing a Sonic Adventure 2 review, maybe even cover some Sonic Leaks and Sonic discussion... Hey everyone! I just want to get the jump with this pinned comment on a question I figure may come up often, which is why do I have all the upgrades from the beginning? Well, the answer lies with the PC port of Sonic Adventure 2. This port specifically is notorious for the amount of issues when it comes to Nvidia Cards, and mine is no exception.
I cannot progress further than Prison Island in either of the stories, the game will always crash for me at Green Forest/White Jungle and I've tried pretty much everything to find a solution to this. For some reason I can play the stages in stage select just fine, so that's what I did using a completed save file. I must stress that every stage in this channel was done legitimately, I only used the upgrades once I had passed the levels they were unlocked in. (Minus the Flame Bracelet however this is just an upgrade to one of Sonic's base movement options.)

@@challengerjakku1943 quick side note when you did the shadow run of techno hill you can stand near the middle of the pipes and when the shoot they have a bigger hitbox than you think so the entire first act of techno hill is completeable as sonic same as the second
My granddads cousin owned a house in San Francisco. He couldn't believe when he walked out the door to see his car get launched into space by a blue hedgehog on a grindboard
Regarding the Egg Golem locking up like that: That's something that happens on Dreamcast and everything in-between, as well. Restarting the fight without unloading it seemingly slows down his AI, and the effect stacks the more it happens. I imagine since you were doing a difficult challenge, you restarted a bunch, and thus Egg Golem was operating VERY poorly. The common theory seems to be that he's lagging for some reason, but I've never bothered checking. This works in Eggman's version too, although I think you'll find that boss very upsetting for a different reason when you encounter it.
It's a shame you're having the crashing issue. I was lucky enough to be able to fix it using methods from PCGamingWiki, but I know a lot of people with certain cards aren't as fortunate. If that weren't the case, minimal upgrade runs with this game are very possible and pretty interesting. Notably, I can soft-confirm Dark Story is clearable with just the dig and hover upgrades, although I've never actually tried it beyond theorycrafting.

Ooooh, so that's what was causing it! You're right, I was restarting a ton because of the RNG factor of the battle so it makes sense. Really Awesome to have an answer to why it was occuring though thank you!
At first I was considering recording the Gamecube version of the game, but I just don't really have the equipment to facilitate the quality at the moment. A minimal upgrade run sounds like a lot of fun! Have you ever tried it in Sonic Adventure 1? I assume it might not be possible given they act like triggers to proceed the story on I think?

@@challengerjakku1943 Yeah, Adventure 1 is weirdly resilient against sequence breaking and likes to ensure all previous story events have been triggered before allowing access to a new one. From what I remember most required upgrades do indeed trigger a story event when you pick them up, so you typically can't make the game progress without them. Ones that aren't tied to a story event typically have some sort of weird quirk that makes them required anyway. (e.g. Knuckles can try to enter Red Mountain by clipping through the gate, but the loading trigger for the stage isn't active until the monkey's been destroyed)

@@TechRules Thats actually crazy, it's interesting that they approached it like that in adventure 1, though it makes sense given the upgrades where independant from the stages themselves.

1:13 if you exit out of city escape and go back into the hero story, sonic will describe that it didnt seem like they were arresting him at first, so they probably blindsided him.

Great video! Was totally worth the wait! I'm supper excited for dark story. Also, I never thought about it, but your criticisms of the emerald pieces from SA1 to SA2 are so accurate! They really did take away helpful tools and make the emerald shards punny in comparison haha. Very well done, love the video and your channel , great work man!

Honestly the difference in the emeralds is something I never really thought about either, but after playing both adventure games back to back for these videos. It really is noticeable and baffling why they changed them. 🤣
Since every other change to the treasure hunting stages are improvements across the board.
I have a new challenge idea you could try out: see if you can beat/see how far you can get through Sonic Unleashed without ever levelling up!

You make some excellent content my good man. The videos are very enjoyable to watch. Speaking of challenges, if you plan to do a Sonic Generations no homing attack run, there'll be some problems in Rooftop Run and especially the Egg Dragoon. I didn't try any fancy speedrun tricks when doing it myself, I only did the whole thing just for a small challenge. Anyway, keep up the good work!

Welp, all because of the boost panel before the GUN Truck, Sonic is gonna live in constant fear of Amy dragging him to the altar after SA2, all because he picked up 5 unavoidable rings.

There's actually a different way to do that Crazy Gadget skip (dubbed the "skip skip") but it's harder then the one you used and involves trying to get Sonic to fall between death planes to get the same result.
7:01 This happening at night is no excuse. We literally see a close up of Shadow on the news with spotlights aimed directly at him in a Dark Story cutscene (you even show it while talking about how it happening at night justifies the mistaken identity).

I've always kind of doubted Tails and other characters were added late into development due to how imperative they are to the story. The biggest theme in Sonic Adventure 2 is mirroring. Everyone has a counter, or a mirror, and it's heavily baked into the story. So it just feels odd to me whenever people bring that up? I've never been able to find a good source for it.
It would make sense given the themes of the game, from my research though I couldn't find a source that really went against it either.
I guess we'll never really know for definite, unless something pops up.
I mean there has been plenty of games where Tails was involved in the story but not playable. Heck Amy has that going on in this very game.

21:37 I remember that hint specifically because it took me over 15 minutes for that shard on my first ever Pumpkin Hill... it's an annoying spot in one the "seemingly background" pumpkins where you have to dig into the wall where its nose would be. I'm not 100% sure, but I also don't think there was much ground to stand on nearby that you would bother getting close for the radar to go off.
That explains why I could never find it. 🤣
I have no clue what they were thinking with this stage, it's far too open for its own good man.
Just for future reference, the meteors in Meteor Herd only target you if you stay in the same area for too long. If you're trying to find an emerald shard buried somewhere and are getting bombarded, just run off somewhere else and then come back to reset the meteors.
A good way to end the Shadow fight is to hang back and charge up a spin dash then release it right before he does chaos spear and homing attack him as he's standing still. As long as your moving quickly chaos spear won't hit you. Naturally this also works in the dark story version. And yeah, it is kinda messed up that omochao straight up lies to you lol.
Ahh so that's how, it's dumb how they straight up lie to the player like that. 🤣
NitsuaGamer actually very recently did a similar video if you want to look at it! He used a few different stategies and struggled with some different parts than you. It's pretty interesting to compare the two.

@@challengerjakku1943 they were actually planning on having a character that looked mostly like sonic besides like a scar so it would've made sense that people mixed them up but honestly knowing Amy she probably saw shadow from a distance her brain said Sonic and she was thinking more about sneaking up on him so he doesn't run away before she could show her affection, and she didn't notice she was sneaking up on a totally different hedgehog

i think the fact that the G.U.N. robots are found around Eggman's pyramid base, but not inside of it is meant to imply that they've only discovered it recently and are monitoring it from the outside

GUN knows about Shadow, they were the ones keeping him on ice
I feel like this version of the radar would've been fine if it detected the nearest emerald shard instead of randomly selecting one. It could maybe get slightly confusing in some situations, but it's way better than it not detecting a shard that's right next to you. And it makes more sense logically than both versions of the radar from SA 1 and 2 respectively. In SA1, it doesn't really make that much sense that it detects each shard independently. It's not like they're different. However it's detecting them (I'd assume it's sensing their energy) would probably just tell it that there's a shard nearby, not which one it is. Same for SA2, where it doesn't make sense that it's choosing to detect one on the other side of the map, but not the one right next to you. Again it has no way to differentiate between them, but this time it also simply has no reason to. So it would make the most sense for it to just detect how close you are to any emerald shard, instead of it choosing one, or detecting multiple at once and knowing which is which. And it would at least make this version easier to use. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
I agree, there's just no reason for them to lock the others in such a way yet still allow you to collect them out of order. If they were this adamant about it, then they should have had one piece spawn in at a time or something.
I always figured that there are a few different Master Emerald Altars that Knuckles cycles through to keep the ME from staying in one place too vulnerable for too long, and we DO know there's a pretty big desert on Angel Island with Sandopolis, so the scene with him and Rouge could be somewhere in the desert ruins.
You have a good point, I just kinda wished they were a bit more clear. SA2 has a few moments in the story that are bizarre because they don't expand upon them.
They should have just put Sandopolis haha XD
@@challengerjakku1943 i mean thats true, but you know how sega is with time and resources. the devs probably just needed to save some time and money, so they just used assets that they already had onhand instead of making totally new textures for a scene thats only about a minute long

Personally I dislike Death Chamber more vs Pumpkin Hill, but that may just be I have played this game so much I'm pretty much know what areas to check lol
Understandable honestly! XD I think I just prefer death chamber because of the linearity, Pumpkin Hill has always been one of those stages for me that go really well, or I end up flying around mindlessly for 4 minutes.

You actually can summersault to avoid the chaos spears, but you need to keep mashing B to extend the duration of the roll. You'll know you did it right when Sonic throws a punch at the end of the animation.
OOOH so that's how it works, I knew you could avoid it somehow but the way you do it is pretty wack XD
@@challengerjakku1943 Yeah, nowhere In game/booklet(as far as I know) does it ever teach you about the extended roll. I only tried it because I noticed I avoided half the attack, and thought I needed to use two summersaults.
But now I'm curious if this extended roll would have helped you back in city escape.
It is way easier to dodge chaos spear with jump+homing. U didn't knew it?? I realized it on my first run btw
I'd like to see Zelda Ocarina of Time without spending rupees. I know for a fact it's impossible in Zelda 1 and Link to the Past, as in Zelda 1 purchasing arrows and bait is mandatory for obtaining all eight triforce pieces (not including using arrows in general) and Link to the Past requires at least 110 rupees to enter Palace of Darkness. But with tricks like the Kokiri Forest Escapes, I think it may be possible.
That's a really cool idea, I've only played ocarina of time once so I'll have to look into this.

Honestly, King Boom Boo is by far the worst boss I've ever faced in a Sonic game. That boss is not only bad, it is UN-GODLY annoying!
For sure, it just drags on for way too long.
GUN is likely at Hidden Base because it's not really GUN, but rather GUN mechs taken over by Eggman.
That makes sense, since don't they find this place in the dark story during sand ocean?

Same to an extent, I only count rings if I had full control of Sonic prior to collecting them. Which was the case for these instances.

I have to disagree. Pumpkin Hill is definitely the better Knuckles stage
Also just to let you know the ghost in aquatic mine that.pops.out of the wall can't actually hurt you. Honestly I am not sure why it is there as they only stun Knuckles very slightly if he is firmly on the ground
