When that music hits at 6:16 something just starts to feel different. Like the inner childhood spending hours and hours upon this game, Finding new exciting stuff to do and race around the most beautiful tracks at the time. Man, the nostalgia and memories are something that I will never be able to explain. Thanks for the video!
It really DOES feel like a theme park - almost utopian with how like… safe and free it feels. Even if I can’t afford everything right off the bat, I sure as hell will enjoy the time I spend there and feel oddly… grown-up(?) while doing so
7:43 The music is region specific it just happens that this time around the PAL version has, appart from a few japanese songs, all the songs from the other regions.
The rear car camera always felt ok for me because it allows me to see the next corner quicker in twisty circuits but I still prefer the hood view in pretty much every game I play. Lovely video on perhaps my favorite game (of any genre) of all time.
I still play GT4 to this day on my PS2 Slim. Granted, I had to buy a Component to HDMI converter to play it on my 4K TV, and switch my TV's aspect ratio to 4:3 in order to get rid of the blurry picture, but still, when I bought GT4 in 2005, I was blown away by how incredible it looked. Even 20 years later, it remains one of the best looking PS2 games ever made.
This was one of my favorite games when I was 10. I recently acquired a ps2 and bought a used copy of GT4 at a local store and I’ve been grinding this game way harder than I have any game on PS4 in recent years. The last few months playing have been a wonderful nostalgia trip and I plan to keep playing!
Can we take a moment to appreciate how outstanding emulation is nowadays? I can play GT4 on a Windows computer with an Xbox controller. If you told somebody back in 2005 that it'd be possible, it'd blow their minds and that's only 18 years ago.
IMHO GT3 is still my favourite of the entire series, the PAL soundtrack, the way cars handle, the variety of tracks and championships, Arcade Mode still being a thing were you can both try out cars that you have yet to obtain in GT Mode while maintaining a feeling of progression, and many other things (like the 2 ending movies). I'd argue that GT4 is objectively the best game of the series, easily, but GT3 just hits me way harder both thanks to nostalgia as well as being a great game on its own. Still, GT4 was so much fun. I miss GT games being this good. Great review!
Loved going back to GT4 after finding the cheats. Licenses all gold, endurance races done in 10 seconds and a car shopping spree that would make Jay Leno blush.
This game is the reason I said my first swear! I was 9 years old, doing a race. 1st place, going well, suddenly a guy passed me! With all the fury a 9 year old could muster, I said "You arse!"
I remember vividly when I was a kid, I would spend hours just navigating through the showrooms looking at the cars. The license tests were hard for me at the time and I had no idea about B-Spec mode so I would grind the sunday cup until I had enough credits to buy new cars.
Fun thing I found out emulating this on the steam deck- GT4 supports controllers with analog triggers! God knows if these existed when the game came out, but their inclusion makes the game shockingly modern when emulated with a modern pad.
I found my old ps2, I got at 6 years old. I need to revisit all my old games as I never ever finished a single one of them. I didn’t even speak English back then, not even a bit let alone enough to understand menus, missions, lore and storyline.
Damn I remember attempting then24 hour at the nurburgring, and using b spec mode to help me out when I needed a break or just wanted the game to play for me for a littlembit while I went did other things. All in all it still took like 13 or 14 hours but man, the prize money and winning a formula 1 car for theneffort was so worth it. That was one of my childhood highlights in gaming.
The game pacing is SOOO much better if you take the license test as you need to progress. Not only does it help you to net get burned out on the tests, but you won't start out with 1 or 2 over powered cars, meaning you'll have more incentive to explore the different cars in the game. I used to do it your way, and it took me so long to see the light...
This game was a major part of my childhood One of the many things I remembered was taking any variety of sports car (usually thhe Cien) and racing a head-to-head to win that Toyota rally concept, solely to sell it again and again to buy something else. Another one was Buying the Saleen with said money, and getting its horsepower to 800, which was mind-blowing for me at that age.
Luckily, there is a patch for modern controllers for this game that unlocks the full motion of the triggers. It controls like gt5 with the triggers and feels pretty good.
Dude the License tests are my favorite part. It's a very Japanese style of you taking baby steps to master something. Like the guy who spends 5 years on the rice before he can do the Fish. You must get all golds before you have truly earned your License.
I've been playing GT4 a bunch on emulator lately, and it really does breathe new life into an already excellent classic. Playing the game with a Logitech G29 wheel really makes each car feel far more distinct, and even the force feedback is emulated properly! Connecting the game to RetroAchievements also adds a lot of challenge as many of the set's achievements require me to limit my car's power for more A-Spec points and drive cars I never would have tried otherwise, as well as adding online leaderboards for license tests and certain time trial challenges. All that, along with upscaling textures and adjusting the chase camera, greatly improves what was already an excellent experience. It's great to see all the improvements people have been adding to these games in recent years, including the GT2 Plus and GT3 Epilogue mods.
I remember playing this on PS2.. So much love was put into GT4.. From the graphics, to the little things 13year old me wouldn't know about. This game is goated and id love a ps5 remaster because i dont think they've done better than this title since
There is a secret menu on the PS2 version where you can change the chase cam & adjust it how you want I found it by just typing it in on TH-cam & It works because I still have my PS2 version of GT4
Back in the day I quit the PS2 after GT3 and switched to the PC with the advent of Windows XP and the challenge of Grand Prix Legends. I have recently purchased a Steam Deck and this is the first game I want to nail. It would seem that there were some cheats within the game that have recently come to light and they have proved quite handy!! A great game and I'm having a ball playing it.
Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. I have none for this game, so some of the stuff you were raving about seemed like defects to me. Nostalgia truly blinds, but that's what makes it so pleasant and i wouldn't change it for anything.
Last month I finally, FINALLY beat GT4 (100%) after owning the game for almost 15 years. On PCSX2 but still, I finally did it. All A Spec too. It was such a great feeling finally finishing the last lap at Le Sarthe 24H and receiving my black Formula GT.
I never played gt4 until we did the speedrun of it. I love gran turismo 4 more than anything and had a phenomenal time playing it. It turned me onto gran turismo and I've been buying and playing them for 3 years now pretty consistently
One more thing for anyone wanting to start playing the game: 1.6.0 PCSX2 lets you use the Qemu wheel plugin, the 1.7.X Nightly versions do not support wheels, but run much better and let you use mods more easily. Since I'm running with a wheel I run on the former. When using that, in Emulation Settings change EE/IOP Clamping Mode from Normal to Full (but only after you finish the licence tests), this fixes the text display issues. In Video GS Plugin settings, disable the Large Framebuffer, enable hardware hacks and in that submenu enable Merge Sprite, Wild Arms Offset, put in Half-pixel Offset to Special (Texture-aggresive), Round Sprite to Full and Texture Offset to X:60 and Y: 00 - This will make the rims on the cars not shake during the replays like you can see in this video.
What I remember? Pennzoil Nismo Skyline GTR on Norschleife over and over again to set new private records. And nowadays, still hopiong it comes on PC to in some time. Imagine this game, in native 4K with 60+ fps with full gpu power
I never played Gran Turismo 4 back when it was out because I don't have a PS2 and I wonder how good it was. In 2022 I bought myself a PS2 for cheap and finally trying it for the first time. Safe to say that it is one or if not the best racing games ever made. Despite its limitation, to bring such detailed and comprehensive racing experience to a console that barely able to play GTA: San Andreas was nothing short of amazing.
still remember my dad buying this for me when i was 10 in some supermarket before christmas. was reading cd case the whole ride home, couldn't believe it said something around 700 cars. good times..
This game is amazing, I've been playing it on my PS2 through OpenPS2Loader because the dvd drive on the console is broken, and it's been working fine! I recommend it for those who have problems playing on the ps2.
Technically the PCSX2 cheat code that lets you use the altered camera settings are actually only pre-setting the hidden menu in settings when the game launches - making it legal for this review
For me, while I accept that it's technically the "best" GT game of the first 4, it just takes itself too seriously to really enjoy it. I never felt the desire to try and get anywhere near 100 percent completion because some of the events are just tedious. If you're a total car nut, it's basically perfection but for just a casual racing game fan, it's a bit much. GT3 is still my favorite of the 4 games because it hit that happy medium. It may have less tracks and cars but I just found the racing more fun and, let's be honest, a lot of the cars included in GT4 are cars you wouldn't even want to drive anyway. GT4 is the ultimate car simulator but GT3 is the better racing game.
GT4 is actually also a marvel of stylization as well. If you actually look at the cars closely, whether emulated or GT4 models in 5 or 6, you would see that they actually have VASTLY less texture and model quality than PGR, Forza or NFS games of the time.
I know that somebody probably already pointed out, but yes, there's a cheat/mod that can change the chase cam to be like the one in GT3. The same author even made a proper trigger analog mod so it's properly playable with a dualshock 4. You don't need to suffer anymore and hopefully GT4 is your new favorite.
Gran Turismo 5 was my favorite in the series. (Hadn't really played the other ones except for 6) I even played the crap out of GT7 on ps5 back in 22 but then I bought a used copy of GT4 and as soon as I saw that intro I KNEW and understood right away why it's the best one. Sure, GT5 finally added ferraris, Lamborghini and Bugattis to the series but literally everything about GT4 is perfect. The presentation alone blows me away and makes me want to play that game over my ps5 and that's saying something!
You can pause and save the endurance races, when you go to the box and save the game. Then you can continue the race days later. In the box you can also switch to b-spec mode.
My fave GT!! Loved the coffee breaks :D Do you ever play with the view from inside the car? I play with the one where you just see the hood. I prefer to see the full vehicle I'm driving, but if I wanna win, chase cam is definitely not it.
The issue I feel other people have after playing the first few playthrough of GT3 or 4 is that they know what kind of car give them the best chance of winning in certain events and then end up doing the same thing as they did in other events and its why they most likely find the game boring after replaying it. I have been playing GT4 for almost 2 decades now in 2 years or so and havent been bored after replaying over 10 times if not more. instead of using the same cars in events as the old playthrough just simply use different cars and switch it up a little. that is the beauty of GT4 and its endless amount of cars! its the fact that you can always change up the strategy and make it different with each saves!
I'm so glad you mentioned the stiff chase cam! Why PD have stuck with this cam for all the following GTs I have no idea. Its the main gripe I have with all the games following 4, yet based on the fact they've never gone back to a chase cam more similer to GT3 or the Forza Motorsport games, I can only assume that their aren't many complaints about it. For me, its the one of two things that stops me from wanting to go back and play it. The other being that when emulating, mapping the throttle and brake to the triggers of a modern controller doesn't really work and they act more like digital buttons. Fianlly, not a major issue, but I also personally preferred the analogue HUD dials from 3, as opposed to the digital design in 4, which again has remained the same ever since.
I must be one of the few that really prefers a stiff chase cam. I find it one of the few actually usable chase cams in games - when the cam is loose, I find it almost impossible to work out the slip angle of a sliding car and correct for this - GT5/6's stiff camera is amazing for drifting, because I don't have to guess what is car and what is camera movement.

I remember a few years ago finding photos I took as a kid when the game launched. It really hit me hard. this was a game that really stuck with me.
The rear car camera always felt ok for me because it allows me to see the next corner quicker in twisty circuits but I still prefer the hood view in pretty much every game I play. Lovely video on perhaps my favorite game (of any genre) of all time.
Grand Valley in GT7 is... a sight to behold from GT1 to now.
It's a completely different circuit.
I hope they bring the old one back.
To each their own, personally GT4 is best in everything in the entire series
On PCSX2 you can change controller sensitivity and Gt4 plays so much better as the cars aren't as sensitive and feel a tad more realistic
Agree bro. All 13 Nijigasaki characters including ShioPomu also love Gran Turismo 4.
A timeless masterpiece, so many things they got just right. The menu soundtrack is easily one of the best ever put in a game.
Man moon over the castle always make me drop a tears, what a beautiful music
God damn this is my first real gaming memory. 23 years old now. Feels like a lifetime ago
The absolute best game ever made, the goat, undisputable!
I remember undertaking the 24 hour Nordschleife…it took me 3 days and I never hoped more about the electricity staying on than during that time!
Timeless game, it's eternal, glorious. Nothing will ever beat it.
i still have nostalgia over your original GT4 video, i was a freshman in high school at the time. time flies
I remember vividly when I was a kid, I would spend hours just navigating through the showrooms looking at the cars. The license tests were hard for me at the time and I had no idea about B-Spec mode so I would grind the sunday cup until I had enough credits to buy new cars.
Favorite in the series. Best ost and best cover art in the series too imo. Still get the replay theater music stuck in my head sometimes.
Setsuna Yuki also love Gran turismo 4 man.
This game will forever be ingrianed in my childhood, still the best GT. Got a platinum on GT7 but this game has so much memmories.
Still my fav in the series, I would love to see a full 4K remake, the Times Square, Grand Canyon and El Captain would be glorious.
I used to do it your way, and it took me so long to see the light...
you can also use frameskipping to make the endurance races very quickly end on b-spec.
This game was a major part of my childhood
One of the many things I remembered was taking any variety of sports car (usually thhe Cien) and racing a head-to-head to win that Toyota rally concept, solely to sell it again and again to buy something else.
Another one was Buying the Saleen with said money, and getting its horsepower to 800, which was mind-blowing for me at that age.
Luckily, there is a patch for modern controllers for this game that unlocks the full motion of the triggers. It controls like gt5 with the triggers and feels pretty good.
Best game ever in my opinion! So many hours played as a kid for years
My dad and would play this game together every single day after I got out of school around 2007. Great times.
one of the best PS2 games ever, still have mine!
Warms my heart to see this vid uploaded after I finished the GT Championship in this game recently.
Which emulator you're using?
@@Solidus_Hamza PCSX2 Nightly, stable build doesn't have achievement support yet.
This also was the first Gran Turismo with more than 2 camera modes. I always prefered the new hood cam.
the opening cut scene with the song Panama was friggin EPIC
Gonna like 5 of your videos RN bc you deserve more views.
GT4 Beta Online is one of the most played online games on PS2 in 2023
That bassline has been in my head rent-free for DAYS!
The dive cam in the replays being timed to the track music was phenomenal I want good replay cams to come back!!!
I remember playing this on PS2.. So much love was put into GT4.. From the graphics, to the little things 13year old me wouldn't know about. This game is goated and id love a ps5 remaster because i dont think they've done better than this title since
The game really makes you feel like gran turismo
People talk about how GT dropped off but holy shit, GT7 in VR is insanity. It's what I dreamt of as a kid.
I've recently bought a PS2 just to play this game :) looks like the best racing game ever made
cause it IS
Found my old PS2 when I went home for Christmas. I saved over my GT4 save though in my excitement 😢
One of my favorite TH-cam channels.
Awesome creator ❤
There is a secret menu on the PS2 version where you can change the chase cam & adjust it how you want
I found it by just typing it in on TH-cam
& It works because I still have my PS2 version of GT4
Wicked video mate! I did the exact same thing with the Toyota Rally Raid Car 😂 loved trying to drift in that game too
I never played gt4 until we did the speedrun of it. I love gran turismo 4 more than anything and had a phenomenal time playing it. It turned me onto gran turismo and I've been buying and playing them for 3 years now pretty consistently
Great Reviews! I'm very surprised someone like you didnt play Command & Conquer games. Specially C&C Generals is a game you would probably like.
One more thing for anyone wanting to start playing the game:
1.6.0 PCSX2 lets you use the Qemu wheel plugin, the 1.7.X Nightly versions do not support wheels, but run much better and let you use mods more easily.
I'm currently playing this on my ps2 slim with logitech dfgt. Darn that mission 34!
What do you mean? GTA Was pretty much playable on PS2
Gran Turismo 4 is still one of the most beautiful games of all time for me, the style is timeless
Never knew of anybody complain about the "stiff" chase camera in GT4 lol.
Honestly I prefer it over the overly shaky cam from the forza games, I wouldn't mind a bit of movement but definitely closer to GT4s
@@zalcan3620 Same here. Its very distracting
still remember my dad buying this for me when i was 10 in some supermarket before christmas. was reading cd case the whole ride home, couldn't believe it said something around 700 cars. good times..
This game is amazing, I've been playing it on my PS2 through OpenPS2Loader because the dvd drive on the console is broken, and it's been working fine! I recommend it for those who have problems playing on the ps2.
Great video man! I’ve still only played GT5, GT6, GTS & GT7, I really need to pick up a PS2 and the older GT games one day!
That mercedes benz sonax 190 is one of my favorite cars of all time because of that license test, one of my favorite license tests of all time!
Great review of GT4!
I won this game on my PS2 and you can rebind the controls in the game, so I have controls similar to Forza.
i have more memories from gran turismo 5 prologue everything felt so real
Man today I was literally thinking "colourshed should make another gt4 review" and then you post this lol
GT4 is actually also a marvel of stylization as well. If you actually look at the cars closely, whether emulated or GT4 models in 5 or 6, you would see that they actually have VASTLY less texture and model quality than PGR, Forza or NFS games of the time.
I agree with pgr and forza, but hell no with nfs.
I drove cars like the pao and midget quite a lot in this game
My all time favourite GT through my teenage years.
Im looking forward to the release of the GT4 Spec II mod.
You can pause and save the endurance races, when you go to the box and save the game. Then you can continue the race days later. In the box you can also switch to b-spec mode.
My fave GT!! Loved the coffee breaks :D
Do you ever play with the view from inside the car?
Please review nfs mw 2012, that would be such an interesting video
