for a 17 year old game, "Tourist Trophy" provided more variation of motorbikes than more modern motorbike games. Nice to ride something like a Tmax and Burgman in a game.
Yeah, the Ride series is obsessed with Naked and Sport bikes. They even removed the small displacement bikes (apart from 2-strokes) and the very few enduro bikes in 5.
It's a damn shame Tourist Trophy never became a thing. The production value is so high, plus you can feel the love the developers had for the subject. It's so bad you can't feel this passion pouring out in modern games.
Bikes don't have the mass appeal cars have. The main Motorcycle markets are in Australia, Indonesia, India, Thailand, Spain, Bolivia and Paraguay. Cars on the other hand are the mainstream transportation device everywhere, even in aforementioned countries, where they coexist in comparable quantities. So yeah. The audience of Tourist Trophy is fewer and further between than the audience of Gran Turismo.

I think it's mainly because motorcycles don't have as much of an impact on popular culture like how cars do. When it comes to cars, you have stuff like Bullit, The Dukes of Hazzard, Smokey and The Bandit, Knight Rider, Miami Vice, The Fast and the Furious, Top Gear, Initial D etc. With motorcycles the examples I can think of off the top of my head are Akira, Top Gun, Easy Rider, Torque and The Great Escape. I also can't think of many motorcycle games apart from Road Rash, Midnight Club, Ride and the MotoGP games. There's also the far more dangerous aspect of motorcycle racing compared to racing cars: how many teenagers modified (riced) their bikes and raced them back in the 2000s compared to the teenagers that modified (riced) and raced cars during the same time period?
Yeah, this would've been a perfect alternative to the Moto GP series, back when Bandai Namco was making those games. I'm guessing Tourist Trophy may have flopped so hard that Polyphony went and buried this game to hell and never looked back.
@@pedrowariorthe biggest problem is it’s going to be difficult to get a game like TT to be a big seller when it’s automatically going to be a harder sell in America. I do think it would sell much better as a DLC for a GT game.
I would highly recommend using the development build versions of PCSX2. The stable release is several years out of date and the dev builds are far more compatible with basically every game now, plus it has a far better UI.
Given the sales numbers I understand why it remained a one-off, but I´m still somewhat sad that it never got a follow-up on PS3. Just imagine this, but expanded with more bikes and events, some more bike focused tracks like Phillip Island and Sachsenring, maybe even the namesake Event on the Isle of Man and Off Road races.
If you back to the early GT5 trailers, bikes were definitely looking to be part of that game. I guess the final nail in the coffin was how long it took for Gran Turismo 5 finally release.
It's not uncommon for us people in South and Southeast Asia, as well as Australia to ride a motorbike years before getting a license. I also began riding motorbike when I was 8 with a tiny motorcross belonged to a friend, and then I trained with my family's larger motorbike at 11 and frequently rode it to go to school throughout middle and high schools. In my case, it was out of necessity because cars are ridiculously expensive here and I took my little sister to school along the way almost every weekday. Think I got caught by the police five times for 6 years before finally getting my motorbike license. We used to have a number of tricks to get around the police like going to the narrow alleys and wearing casual clothes to cover up our school uniform. I'm 28 years old now and can say I've been riding motorbikes for over 20 years. It might sound that crazy for Western people, but it's certainly a norm for us Asians and Aussies. And it's not like every kids began riding motorbikes on the traffic road as well because some also only rode them within their residential area or on the backyard until they're ready to hit the road.
It's also really common in the US. Only about a third of the road riders I know have an M endorsement on their license. It wasn't until very recently that California began to require the M endorsement to register a road bike, and the other 49 states are really lax on enforcement.
I never had a PS2 during its heyday, so I missed this game when it first came out. In 2012 I bought my "dream bike," a 2007 Honda VFR800. I was super high on having this awesome bike, and one day I went looking to see if it was in any video games. I'd never owned a vehicle that was in a game before. That was how I found out about Tourist Trophy. I bought a copy just to kinda have on my shelf as a novelty, it was maybe $10. About a year later my future wife got me what might be the last PS2 sold at regular retail in North America, or at least one of the last ones. I played my one (at the time) PS2 game and finally got to race a virtual version of my own vehicle. Super cool.
Gotta say, compared to the original review, your production quality(editing, getting background information about the game and it's development, review process, etc) has improved a lot.
Spenny, I just wanted to tell you if you're using the PCSX2 emulator, make sure you use the nightly version because it's a million times better. These reviews never miss, nor does your chill voice.
I would love to see Polyphony bring back Tourist Trophy, especially considering how popular the Ride series is. The hard part would probably be getting licensing for enough bikes to actually compete with Ride.
Tip: PCSX2's software mode is very accurate and can run at full speed on high end modern CPUs. The tradeoff is you have to run at the original resolution.

Other than TH-cam UI making sure every button is also a subscribe unsubscribe button (so the analytics may say otherwise) I've been watching since you had like, IUNNO maybe 1000 subs, always glad to see a re-review. Watching the video, at 5:12, i notice you're using the "stable" build for PCSX2, which is Extremely outdated and full of flaws I HIGHLY recommend you use the "developer"/"daily" build since it has a ton more feature and more game-specific fixes
This game was very enjoyable to play as kid. It was just incredible visually… There was none of the phony atmosphere & look of the MotoGP games. Everything just had a smooth, crisp, & natural vibe.
Still got my copy of TT. Good game. Feels a little wooden but it was a nice challenge getting used to the braking and shift of momentum. Very different to GT. Keep up the good work.

We absolutely need more bike games, if only to get Milestone to actually _try_ with their titles. It's truly sad that Tourist Trophy, despite being so old, has comparable engine sounds to current Milestone games. Bring on Tourist Trophy Two.
The Kawasaki GPZ900R is in the original Top Gun movie. I guess Top Gun is pretty iconic. The KZ1000's were in Mad Max, and I believe Road Warrior as well.
I remember being so excited for this game, and it was one of , if not the only, PS2 game I got on release day. I like the Ride series from Milestone, but I would really love a sequel to Tourist Trophy . For one, they could implement the customization from the first Ride game, where you could like even choose the colour of your brake lines , which they omitted in later releases. It was something silly, but it was a fun little thing that didn't add anything performance wise, but it did make you feel like that digital motorcycle was 'your ' motorcycle'. Same with the need to change your oil from time to time, Milestone scrapped that too , and to this day I don't get why they did that. I'm hoping that, if they do decide to eventually make a Tourist Trophy sequel , they'll add quirky little things like that.
Tourist Trophy was a fantastic game, and I wish Polyphony Digital would expand their rosters to other avenues of racing like this more often. Imagine this engine running a proprietary drift game, or rally game, or hell, take a note from Turn 10 and make it Gran Turismo based open world racer. It's a fantastic framework that I feel is sorely underused.
The last time I loaded my PS2 to play this champ, it started to make bad noises from the disc drive and the tray needed pushing to close. So now, I emulate it on my phone, along with GT4 and the Kaido Racer series. They work perfectly and if anything, the smaller screen makes them look better than they ever did stretched over a modern TV.
9:53 🤯 ALMOST EVERY motorcycle game has no settings like that WOW. Bike and Gear Customisation is important but riding style is very IMPORTANT. Whether you replicate your style or the pros it gives the rider more personality. Hell after GT7 is done and on with the next one they should Develop a Tourist Trophy 2! Barely any of the games are doing what PD does in terms of Customization with SVGs and Community Made Content as of the Modern releases!
I also remember reading in a news stand cheats magazine around 2003 that there was a gameshark code for a "green motorcycle" in the files of Gran Turismo 3, but I've never seen anything since, the same article noted the 911 GT3 and the Nomad Diablo, so there has to be a shred of truth to it right? I wonder if it's specific to launch and early copies of the game?
This is something that worries me a bit, we are losing game knowledge as time goes on, like how people forgot about the alternate "secret heaven" in GTA San Andreas that's accessible by jumping down the stairs of a house near the golf course in Las Venturas with the super jump cheat
I had a copy of this long ago and played it on a vacation, even then after a few days I felt like the game had run out of things to do. Thankfully I never paid full price for it.
I would have bought this game...if I knew it existed at the time. I remember many years later, my brother talking about this game. But I never knew it existed at the time.
what i liked about the first 3 gran turismo games is that it was so unpersonalized. no visible driver, no racing number or car mods. just pick a color and thats it.
Because i've only seen one comment mentioning it, i'll have to tell you that at 5:10 you're still using the increasingly outdated 1.6.0 stable release of PCSX2. If your computer can handle it and I don't doubt it does, you should really swap to the nightly release and keep automatic updates on it, that release is where all the updates to the emulator and game fixes are done. Just to give you an idea for why it's better than the stable release, nightly has been working without the cumbersome plugin system since sometime in 2021, has a much more user friendly Dolphin like UI and allows you to make a game list and make individual configurations to the games rather than just global.
Well, now that I know there are workarounds for making it work on PCSX2... ...I still won't re-download it, because that's too much of a hassle, and the Ride series has me covered on the sim side, while TC2/TCMF have me covered on the arcade side, plus my 360 still works, and you'll have to pry my copy of PGR4 from my cold, dead hands (especially since I happened to have bought the game in the only GameStop located in the town where it was pressed/made, Juncos, PR...)...
Welcome to it. The one make GT demos (airtrek for example) sure but yeah a good small 2006 underrated gem this one. I'd recommend Ride 1-3 I'd interested in other bikes with career modes similar to GT/Forza. Ride 4 has a Forza 2 region career which is awesome but the game is hard. We aren't all into bikes but the manual, lacking ads mostly us GT fans know about it so you aren't alone. God of war 2 or PS2/PSP ports had likely more advertising.
Just a heads up for you concerning PCSX2 : I see you're still using 1.6, even if it's in a nightly state you might want to switch to 1.7 because 1.6 is now 3 years old.
So sad that don't exist a TT2. Other modern motorbike racing game are so arcade... i don't care TT1 still superior I remember as a kid i tried to compare all the 1000cc racing bike in some tracks to see what bike was the best
This should have been a GT4 Addon so more people would notice it :) Iam replaying Project Gotham 4 right now and it lets you race bikes and cars in the same race ( even tho the Disclaimer says that this never happens in real life ). I also grab a bike in TestDrive Unlimited from time to time. Sadly Driveclub and its Bike DLC will be lost until PS4 emulators make their way. Ride 5 and Ride on the Edge 3 are good but are very niche games. Car racing games have it hard at times so virtual bike racing is harder to get good and right. Its hard to replicate riding a bike with a keyboard or controller...
It was a great game, even for the time, think I pretty much completed the game, when ride originally came out think that got close to it. I'm not a fan of motorcycle games these days because like car games, apart from Gran Turismo they are all very heavily aimed for sim racing, which is great if you have a sim set up and lots of spare time to practice playing the games. I'd be tempted to buy a old PS2 and get hold of a copy of the game again.
I always thought it was cool my friends bike was in there, an 80s GPZ900R, for a while I had the badge print burned into my leg from it's period Yoshimura cyclone exhaust pipe. I had no idea at the time it was the Top Gun bike, it's actually on my channel, it had a horrible Tasmanian Devil wrap, and I dumped it in his sandy driveway so the tank was dented 😅
One issue is that you're using an outdated version of the emulator, PCSX2 1.7.0 has already been out for a long time and has a way better UI, along with an auto-updater ;)
I played TT more than GT4, it looks good and can make riding a bike on a game quite convincing but at it's core it still suffers from polyphony's terrible physics. Feels like the world is racing around you rather than you controlling a car/bike around a lap.

You should use the PCSX2 Nightly builds, not 1.6.0, that is very old and many games have been fixed on the newer versions. Just a tip!

I had a copy of this long ago and played it on a vacation, even then after a few days I felt like the game had run out of things to do. Thankfully I never paid full price for it.

I still miss the fact that I could wheelie to a standstill and do proper stoppies. Miss that in Ride5 but is the Crew2 any good?
Bought GT4, then bought TT as the next game I even bought.

I was a bit surprised Harley Davidson wasn't in Tourist Trophy but Ferrari wasn't in Gran Turismo until GT5 and Porsche never was.
what i liked about the first 3 gran turismo games is that it was so unpersonalized. no visible driver, no racing number or car mods. just pick a color and thats it.
I highly recommend using pcsx2 nightly builds instead of vanilla build. Less emulation problems by a country mile.
Scooters, power cruisers like the VMax, classic bikes, nakeds, superbikes... Damn, TT's bike list just puts Ride 5's to shame so hard.
Because i've only seen one comment mentioning it, i'll have to tell you that at 5:10 you're still using the increasingly outdated 1.6.0 stable release of PCSX2. If your computer can handle it and I don't doubt it does, you should really swap to the nightly release and keep automatic updates on it, that release is where all the updates to the emulator and game fixes are done. Just to give you an idea for why it's better than the stable release, nightly has been working without the cumbersome plugin system since sometime in 2021, has a much more user friendly Dolphin like UI and allows you to make a game list and make individual configurations to the games rather than just global.

Well, now that I know there are workarounds for making it work on PCSX2... ...I still won't re-download it, because that's too much of a hassle, and the Ride series has me covered on the sim side, while TC2/TCMF have me covered on the arcade side, plus my 360 still works, and you'll have to pry my copy of PGR4 from my cold, dead hands (especially since I happened to have bought the game in the only GameStop located in the town where it was pressed/made, Juncos, PR...)...

Welcome to it. The one make GT demos (airtrek for example) sure but yeah a good small 2006 underrated gem this one.
I'd recommend Ride 1-3 I'd interested in other bikes with career modes similar to GT/Forza. Ride 4 has a Forza 2 region career which is awesome but the game is hard.
We aren't all into bikes but the manual, lacking ads mostly us GT fans know about it so you aren't alone.
God of war 2 or PS2/PSP ports had likely more advertising.
Just a heads up for you concerning PCSX2 : I see you're still using 1.6, even if it's in a nightly state you might want to switch to 1.7 because 1.6 is now 3 years old.

You should use the PCSX2 Nightly builds, version on this video is outdated and, I dunno about TT, but it saved me alot of headaches from other games.

easy? maybe i just didnt know how to play this right, i remember it being cripplingly difficult and i was good at GT4
This should have been a GT4 Addon so more people would notice it :) Iam replaying Project Gotham 4 right now and it lets you race bikes and cars in the same race ( even tho the Disclaimer says that this never happens in real life ). I also grab a bike in TestDrive Unlimited from time to time. Sadly Driveclub and its Bike DLC will be lost until PS4 emulators make their way. Ride 5 and Ride on the Edge 3 are good but are very niche games. Car racing games have it hard at times so virtual bike racing is harder to get good and right. Its hard to replicate riding a bike with a keyboard or controller...

It was a great game, even for the time, think I pretty much completed the game, when ride originally came out think that got close to it. I'm not a fan of motorcycle games these days because like car games, apart from Gran Turismo they are all very heavily aimed for sim racing, which is great if you have a sim set up and lots of spare time to practice playing the games. I'd be tempted to buy a old PS2 and get hold of a copy of the game again.

What bikes do/did you own? Especially that dual sport with the traditional round headlight?
I always thought it was cool my friends bike was in there, an 80s GPZ900R, for a while I had the badge print burned into my leg from it's period Yoshimura cyclone exhaust pipe.
I had no idea at the time it was the Top Gun bike, it's actually on my channel, it had a horrible Tasmanian Devil wrap, and I dumped it in his sandy driveway so the tank was dented 😅

I bought this game long ago, felt like a cheap cash grab and re used assets land. HATED IT. Basically bought GT4 again but worse.
One issue is that you're using an outdated version of the emulator, PCSX2 1.7.0 has already been out for a long time and has a way better UI, along with an auto-updater ;)
So the game named Tourist Trophy doesnt have an Isle of Man track?
pcsx2 nightly doesn't have as many compatibility issues as the regular pcsx2, just fyi
I played TT more than GT4, it looks good and can make riding a bike on a game quite convincing but at it's core it still suffers from polyphony's terrible physics. Feels like the world is racing around you rather than you controlling a car/bike around a lap.

Riding Spirits 2 had way more bikes than TT if I remember rightly. But not nearly as well made.
This game is more like DLC to GT4 it's just shame there wasn't a 2nd game
