The game was ahead of its time especially the graphics. Hard to believe it’s still the most recent Midnight Club game you can get.

It's good for the most part, but the visuals have some problems.
Like how depending on the time of day and your type of paint, vinyls can get almost impossible to see clearly. Also, you can clearly see that the neon lighting was kinda half assed. Especially in the interiors, all it does is turn the brightness up in a specific area and give it a color. Doesn't look like actual light.
How exactly was it "ahead of it's time"? I see a lot of people say this about certain games, but they never explain their reasoning.

One of the best memories i have of this game is that, as a kid, i spent hours making a recreation of the eclipse from fast & furious, got all proud of it, only to enter a pink slip and lose the car. I was devastated. Then i bought a skyline and kept playing, a little sadder than usual, but shit happens. Then i had the idea to go race some pink slips again, because why not? I get to the location on the map AND THE GUY STILL HAS MY ECLIPSE AND IS RACING IT FOR PINKS TOO. Wining back the car i spent so much time building has one of the best experiences i had in a racing game till this day honestly, it was such a great mechanic.

@@Organogolddulcegarci nope, this is a campaign mode feature while progressing on story mode. What I did on these pink slips events I intentionally lost hypercars with awesome designs or even cops to see the AI using them, enjoying to see a character from the story mode using a Charger SRT/8 Police vehicle racing against me lol
I also intentionally lost the bus from traffic vehicle to see how those places would look with a bus inside 😂 I did pretty funny stuff with that feature
Midnight Club was so freaking badass.
Sucks that it ended with Los Angeles, but at least it went out on a high note.

I’m playing it for first time and it doesn’t just hold up well, no other arcade racers come close to it. I honestly can’t believe how good this game is or how it could die after such a masterpiece. I’d kill for a pc port.
In all honesty, I think this still looks better than a lot of racing games in recent years.
I love crew 2 but it looks like shit mc:la that was made 10 years before it and on a previous generation console looks way better

hell, this game had car interiors so good that once I saw the FPS mode in GTA V and got a similar look at the car interiors I instantly thought "a decade of progress and they look like PS2 graphics,what the hell are you thinking R*?"

The "try hard" tattoo the protagonist joked about getting on his neck should be an option for a tattoo in GTA V
Also this game ends like a racing game should end: be able to drive and customize every car in the game.
Small thing about this game is that you can get convertibles and are able to control the roofs the only other game I know that has that feature is test drive unlimited 2

Im so glad this game had such a big fan base. It quite literally is the best video game ever created ever. There is just something about it that makes it perfect. Car selection, customization, DUB, the music, the LA remake, Rockstar Game's love for Los Angeles, the RAGE game engine, the cut-scenes, the story line, the whole jump thru a million hoops to get the Audi R8 thing, the hidden collectibles, racing friends online, and so much more... It's a shame the group that made it disbanded because it's such a gem. As a street racing game overall, nothing has been able to come close in quality.

I remember the police chases in this game took so long to escape from even when hitting the freeway in a z06. Once I went into alleys and shortcuts the police almost immediately went into searching mode and it became much easier to escape

Just a note about the custom playlist : you can't add music from your system to the game. The custom playlist is used to only select songs you like from the game's soundtrack.
Although you can still play music you have loaded on your system instead of the in game music

This game is why I bought my car, the 2008 voltswagon r32. It’s fun and I sometimes play the music that’s in the game in my car it’s soooooo cool.
I think the voice actors were cast very well and did a great job with the lines they were given. Had they gone for more story I think it would have gone well
What personally astonished me about this game is the fact that the automatic gearbox actually functioned the way it functions in real vehicles. In most games the automatic gearbox just shifts at the maximum rpm. However in this game, if you were just cruising along the gearbox would shift at low to mid range rpm. If you would subsequently floor it, the gearbox would actually downshift. I personally don't know of any game that has this feature.
BeamNG Drive works that way too, but that's a completely different game

Takeshi It's just a shame Forza is an exclusive. I loved Forza 3 on my 360 but I, like many others, waited so long for a complete edition of Forza Horizon that the full game simply isn't available by any legal means anymore. After that, they've all been on Xbox One which isn't a console I intend to buy since there are so few exclusives I want to play even if I really want those few. On the Sony side of the line, we don't have anything close to a Midnight Club or Horizon where you get to do so much to your cars and enjoy them to their fullest and it genuinely sucks
@@kassperplus No FH game really focused on an urban environment. The closest you had was Surfers Paradise in 3 but still the majority of the game was in the rest of the map.

I really enjoyed all your "Midnight Club" reviews, right on the money! I lived & worked in LA for years & this game nails many elements & sections of Los Angeles far better than "GTA 5" as impressive as it is, my favorite in the series!
Well, this game’s world is meant to be the real LA while GTA V’s world is a fictionalized take, so it makes sense that it’d feel more authentic.

this was the very first game that I played online when I was a kid on Xbox live. The community and free roam was so sick to show off vehicles with your friends, race, and just fucking around it was so fun man. Fond memories.
This is still the best racing game I've ever played.
To anyone who's planning on playing this game for the first time.
Do not go all out on the time trials.
there's three rounds to each time trial
5 Seconds faster than the last.
Beat them with minimal time, but on the third and final round go all out.
For time trials I just race as a normal until I reach the finish line I just wait till the last couple of seconds in the first and second round but on the third I go fast it's much easier since the game takes away several minutes each time you do it quickly
Rate My Ride was a great feature. Loved that you could store and transfer entire vinyl groups from car to car, they didn't always transfer over properly since it just used the coordinates on the specific body panel, but finding a cool skin and being able to have it on any car was awesome

People would share their modded cars as well. I managed to get a gold police Charger through the social club
Problem is that all online functions dont work anymore. I think just matchmaking is still working, but the option to see, rate and share custom rides is locked.
EDIT: I saw on the Rockstar website and all online functionality dont work anymore, not just Community features.
I missed out on that shit, by the time I had the game on PS3 I don't think those features were even up anymore lol.
@@blackshadow7192 you mean a gold painted Police Charger officially from Rockstar's web page? Because that's quite interesting if that's true because mirror painting (chrome) was only available by modding the game and the interesting fact about this is that on Xbox chrome painting it's only meant to be like a mirror. But on PS3 people got to mod that mirror painting in any colour they wanted and it was available to be seen by others while playing online. On the other hand on Xbox if you used chrome modded painting you were the only one seeing your car on that colour. Online people would only see your vehicle with normal colour.
To be honest I did love "Rate my Ride" feature because of being able to buy pretty nice designs or even some modded stuff like vehicles with purple tail lights or some nice stuff (mixed with ugly modded vehicles too)
This game had a wonderful soundtrack and one of the best in any game. Nostalgia hits hard and miss this series. It’s sad that the old games were either not made anymore or just got worse like nfs has.
I hold Midnight Club Los Angeles as the pinnacle of Street Racing Arcade games. Its been a decade and NFS is not even close.

I had this on Xbox 360 and I played it with a Madcatz steering wheel and pedals where I could map all the controls to my liking and that's where this game came fully alive.
Nothing was better than playing it in cockpit view where as arcade style it was it felt real and I would treat it like real life like obeying traffic laws like stopping at red lights on my way to races.
I had friends who sucked at driving games but when they came over and they played this with my steering wheel and pedals they were killing it lol.
Easily in my top three favorite racing games of all time and I finished it multiple times.

Playing it for the first time ever its my favorite racing game since Sega Gt 2002 & Outrun Coast 2 Coast . Looks amazing on a 55 “ and a 360 .
Graphics still hold up well today
Winning a race in a Midnight Club game brings a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction no other racing game can deliver. No racing game can keep me on the edge of my seat like Midnight Club can.
FYI, Midnight Club LA is available again digitally after being removed from the store in 2018.
Seems like Rockstar Games has renewed the licenses… maybe they’re up to something :)

The protagonist is cool to me for some reason I like how he carries himself and talks shit to the other racers even though he’s the new guy he’s got a charisma to him

Rockstar cannibalised a lot of the market for another Midnight Club with GTA Online’s car racing and customisation, and that really bums me out... I miss the days of racing around in a Mustang or a Dodge Charger flogging Cars they have no right beating.
Oh well, I’ve got a real Mustang these days, just no racing it like a mad man 😂

i haven't seen you leaning up on two wheels when taking corners, I'm not sure if that is a dub edition only feature but this is how we'd race online back then to maximize speed when cornering, this also made it really easy to dodge certain obstacles
online races were very thrilling, being able to pull off shortcuts and corners flawlessly was very emotionally rewarding

It's amazing how you can play all this games, edit the whole videos and make awesome worthy reviews. Keep it up man 👍
One thing i noticed from my playthrough of this game is that in comparing the easier and harder versions of the same track, the difference is that the checkpoint placement is more sparse as the difficulty increases. So the easier version have a slower laptime since you is forced to take detour at certain section, while the harder versions forces you to find unknown shortcuts to where the checkpoints is and a regular road will be slower usually.

I bought the game late into 2012 and grinded it hard. I even got the audi r8 from Rockstar club. And I just needed 5 friends to get the last achievement. For a young car enthusiast who fell in love with MC3 this was an amazing game to carry on the name. Sure the lack of cars was iffy but it made up for it with customization

Well we might be getting Bully 2, of course that just might be another big rumour, but it does mean something like Midnight Club or even Man- that will never come back. That does mean others might come back.
Firstly, Because Codemasters mostly makes Racing Games anyway.
Secondly because Midnight Club LA's sales were disappointing, the added development time and resource requirments and the much better sales of GTA and RDR means that from a business perspective, Rockstar would make way more money with a GTA 6 several times over any Midnight Club 5

i remember the INSANE things people could do with their cars decals wise, going online in free mode seeing the crazy wraps was so cool and the cruising with people youve never met and enjoying the city

Cops are super easy to lose on the freeways. Especially if you can lane split. They have a hard time doing that.
Yeah but depends if you know how to drive and it also depends how fast your vehicle is.
There's only one car you can't get in this game as of 2019: the Audi R8. Due to R* shutting down social club, you can't complete a specific challenge to get the R8
In the PSP it's unlocked when finishing LA. Instead of just finishing to LA, the PSP also have Tokyo (from MC3 Dub Edition: Remix)
The R8 is a very good, grippy AWD exotic, and always encountered as an AI, being driven by a South Central character Doc.

To deal with graphics pop-ups on PS3 you need to turn off the music ingame. Anyway... we need a new Midnight Club, and I want a "Midnight Club: São Paulo"... just saying
Even on 360 and One there is popin, but they have the option to install to a hard drive so the popin just exists on the transition between cruising and racing, on a race it works very well. As far as I remember playing first on my PS3 which unfortunately broke, you cant install on it and relying solely on the Blu Ray does affect negatively some games (there were many games which received updates to place some common game files on the hard drive to improve the experience, the most known example is Bayonetta). I remember playing NFS The Run and the load times were horrid.

Rubber bending is actually a good thing. Because without it, at the first error, you're done and it's impossible to come back to 1st position. it works both ways.

I played this game A LOT, and there are a few little things I've found which may be not well known to some:
like, in controller settings, you can bind things like convertible funtion, hydraulics, horn and even police lights if you're using a police car. it's a little difficult to organise all that though.
you've probably seen at least a few of the rockstar collectibles, but each ten you find gives you a special ability toggle, including unlimited nitrous, never damage out, and unlimited special abilities [the ones that I got]. the catch is you don't get rep or money if you use them in races and in chases, missions and such.
there's a certain placeup in the north of the map where there is no fencing off. if you drive carefully into the non-road, your game has a little freak out, and you pretty much fall out of the world. you can only see a blurrrrr of the colours of the ground and your car. you have to reset from there.
if you read the player manual through, if you have that with your copy, you can discover a few cool things you may not know. a stand out for me is that if you can brake to the correct degree and shift weight forward using b + right stick forward [xbox] you can do a stoppie on a motorcycle! may not surprise some, but I was blown away.
in south central there's a stadium of some kind which has stairs leading down into. if you approach through the right entrance, you can go right down then back up the stairs and get some crazy air!
This game does not run in 1080p on the ps3 at all. It's not even running at a full 720p, only 960x720. It's one of the lowest resolutions I've played a game at on this console.
NFS Undercover STILL sold better than MC:LA. The world's not fair.

You tell me that average crap sold better? Though its still worst selling NFS, it was probably the name that... what was it like 2 mil copies it sold, not even name carried it.

@@wreckedcarzz It makes sense for any old product that servers for it would go offline, especelly when you, from bussiness stand point would make sense. Sure there may be people that would want it back and, yes it would bring them money, but in end, to invest money and then earn that money back, may come far less than to focus on the future projects that will, surely bring more. Its why something like Remakes or Remasters either don't happen or are few in far beetwen, its nice to relive that game, but what is the fact that the same number or higher will go back to get that game?

It would have been nice to add on this video talking about the cut content as Detroit city, Nissan GTR (which you can find it on TH-cam videos from modders replacing a vehicle with the unfinished Nissan GTR which also had customization) and if I'm not wrong there were drag races too. That cut content would have make a HUGE difference on the final version of the game.
