    I'd argue breaking the progression in GT games is at least half the fun. The hype when getting a ridiculously overpowered prize car is just unmatched, and steamrolling subsequent events with it is just fulfilling a certain kind of power trip fantasy.

    Something else to add - B-spec mode allows you to completely skip any license requirements for a race. You can complete the compact car challenge which normally requires an iB license with something like the supercharged MR2, NA Miata, or even a well tuned CRX or Del Sol from the starting lineup (sadly the civic type R is just a bit too long). The championship pays out 7500 credits per race with a much larger bonus than anything else at the time, but the competition is basically stock superminis with the occasional jumpscare of the MR clio V6. You win a vintage honda S600 roadster which also sells for 60k which means you can not only check off a needed series on your way to the GTWC, but you also leave with over 100k in cash, despite it only being your second series (assuming you did like sunday cup or the kei cup first to drum up some quick cash for upgrades). Now you're setup to buy whatever you want for progression - subaru to do boxer cup/star of pleadies, viper to do roadster/NA/FR/etc, or even just tune up your starter a bit more to keep going with progression.

  • @ImaSiphy

    Being really young around 2008-ish, without any internet resources, prize cars were one of the biggest reasons why I liked GT4. To my child self, there were seemingly infinite amount of events to complete, and an infinite amount of cool cars to win and discover. That discovery was the most exciting part of GT4 to me.
    It helped that there were alot of "game breaking" cars like these that made hunting for prize cars more, well exciting. When I was young, my favorite route through the game involving one of these cars was getting the Rx8 concept from licenses, using it to win the Rx8 race car, then using that for the JGTC cup.
    Even though GT3s progression was well balanced, I really like the chaotic and almost "sandbox" like way you progress through GT4, and I don't fault the game for that at all. I didnt really care about finishing the game, just wanted to drive cool cars.

    To me the 25% requirement to unlock the Endurance Races always felt somewhat logical because I feel like only a somewhat experienced driver in real life would even consider doing a Endurance Race in the first place. But then again, I do admit that it feels a bit wrong in a game.

    • @THENAMEISQUICKMAN
      @THENAMEISQUICKMAN 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Yeah, I would've preferred it if it just unlocked through some kind of "qualifying" tournament, maybe of races that were 10-15 laps long in the Professional League or something. Endurance races are a lot more fun when they're always available, especially when you're going to make some of them available to such early-game licenses and cars, it's like... why NOT have them available from the beginning? Who by the time of 25% completion isn't going to have done all the licenses by then anyway?

    • @Soonjai
      @Soonjai 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      @@THENAMEISQUICKMAN Or unlock them on a Track-by-Track basis with those slightly longer races, like do a 20 Lap Race on Tsukuba to unlock all Tsukuba Endurance Events, do a 3 or 4 Lap Race on the Nordschleife to qualify for that tracks Endurance Events.
      Would be a more natural Progression and the "qualifier" could have the same license requirement as whatever the lowest one for that Tracks endurance Events is, but you could unlock a different Event that needs a higher license you might not have yet too.

    • @sdx3918
      @sdx3918 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Well irl you can get pretty far in endurance with just an FIA bronze license there are some bronze amateur drivers that went from racing regional one make championships to racing in the WEC in only like 3 years. Sure, money plays a role too but that's still impressive.

    • @Soonjai
      @Soonjai 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@sdx3918 The license is one thing and may be fairly low-ish for many Endurance Events, but those Events may have further requirements than just having the correct license. Like i.e. if you want to drive a LeMans Hypercar during the LeMans 24 Hour Race (aka compete in the Top Class in that Event) your license and even money mean nothing as long as you aren´t at least a Top 3 Driver in any International Championship.
      At the end of the day for a game it would make the most sense to either make the license the only requirement for Endurance Races or unlock them, as mentioned above, by other means like a qualifier Race or something like "Get at least Top 3 in 2 Events on this Track" to get access to the Tracks Endurance Events.

    @TeaKanji 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +72

    Well, that's interesting. I was already in the process of writing a script for my own "How To Break Gran Turismo 4" video, but you beat it to it. That being said, there's one event that I was going to focus on that you didn't cover. All I'll say is: while the Suzuki GSX-R/4 you win from the Suzuki Concepts one-make might not seem like much, its potential is absolutely ridiculous once you tune it, especially considering it's a roadster and compact car. It's obtainable very early in a playthrough if you head straight to the Suzuki one-makes after obtaining the B licence.
    Also, for why GT4's progression is the way it is, I also feel like GT Concept has a role to play, as it meant that PD had a bunch of concept cars modelled, like the Cien and RSC, and nowhere to put them. It doesn't make sense to make them buyable, so they chose to put them as prize cars instead, with some questionable placement here and there.

    • @MysteriousFigure
      @MysteriousFigure 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      That gsx-r/4 is bananas, you can't get a wild amount of power out of it, but being able to get 300bhp out of something that feels like it weighs less than a trainer and with a wing option to be able to crank the downforce, on the tighter twisty tracks it is super zippy
      Honorable mention to the tommy kaira zz-ii as well (though not a prize car), with the 4wd and being able to put wild tunes with a wing on it, it went crazy fast and anything bar lmp cars I could beat in it (though I used the 2003 jgtc nissan instead which for some reason had crazy amounts of downforce in the settings compared to the other JGTC cars from memory)

    • @TeaKanji
      @TeaKanji 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      It's hilariously good in so many ways, yeah. Its nitrous when set to 100 power gives it such a massive power boost on straights, and it doesn't deplete in an instant either like it does for other cars. It destroys the tarmac/wet special condition races or Tuning Car Grand Prix with a set of racing softs, or you can use it in endurances and it can stay on the track for ages (60+ laps of Tsukuba with sports mediums) thanks to its exceptionally high grip modifiers and low weight.
      All of the GT 500's max out at 50 / 70 downforce (which is ridiculous IMO), the '03 Skyline is one of the best, but it's a bit prone to understeer because it has high rear grip. The Motul Pitwork Z is a much smoother drive (plus the game gives you one as a prize car), it can even do GTWC without much issue with the stage 4 turbo and a good setup.

    When talking about GT3 and the progression in that game, the easiest route I found was to start out with the MX5 1.8 liter (yes it's the one costing 16,900 credits, not 17,000). Then you would use it in the early events, racking up enough credits to fully tune it. Now, the MX5 fully tuned (a little over 370 horsepower) could rival opponents such as the ones found in certain amateur grade events, and it could achieve a top speed of around 340 km/h (or somewhere around 210 mph). Now, with this in mind, you could actually win the race at the Test Course in the Dream Car Championship with this car (if the FTO was not present), and that would net you 35,000 credits for completing 5 laps. Yes, GT3 is very time consuming. But once you did this enough, you could buy the Viper GTS, and give it the highest level of tuning, increasing the power output to 1100+ horsepower. Now, with this monster in your possession, you needed to get the Super licence, and enter Like The Wind. 20 laps later, and you would have the legendary Mazda 787B in your possession. With this car, winning any event it could enter would be an easy task, due to its amazing grip and handling. And with this, you have practically beaten the game. Granted, you would need other cars for certain events, but the majority of the "open for any car" events would be easy to win with the 787B

      An alternative method I had in the past was doing the rally license, all the rally events to get the escudo and then from there you can use that for things like the like the wind for 787b, super speedway 150 (you change the gearbox into automatic, slam the car into the right wall with the accelerator on full on the sticks with rubber bands and leave it to run if I remember correctly from playing ages ago) for a chance at the f1 car and so on (with gt3 letting you give the escudo 1800bhp)

    maybe it's not talked about too much in the community because of its difficulty, but i think gt3 has the craziest progression skip in the series, maybe eclipsing even the f1 car you get from the roadster endurance.
    i mean, you don't even have to enter simulation mode to do it. just get all gold times in the arcade mode time trial, and you'll get the panoz esperante, which is kinda one of the best cars in the game, lol.
    and i've found that getting those gold times isn't even that hard compared to getting golds in the licenses, the only potential barrier being the complex string trial, but that just demands your patience more than anything.
    anyway, great video, as always!

  • @X2011racer

    It feels as though Polyphony Digital has been doing anything in their power to reduce progression skips in later games starting with GT5.
    In GT5, licenses are not necessary, but you have the infamous A-Spec and B-Spec levels that you have to raise in order to unlock more races.
    In GT6, progression is super streamlined with licenses now mandatory again, but you can't take them on all at once; you need to complete races first in a specific license set before you can complete the next set of license tests.
    GT7 has the Menu Books. Once you finish the base game books, you're free to do whatever you want, as there's nothing to guide you at this point. There are some Gold Prizes that are decent enough to be considered progression jumps, such as the 2J in one of the Mission Hall mission sets, the F1500 T/A in another mission set, the Red Bull X2019 Competition in the Super License and the McLaren MP4/4 in the Super Master License.

      Yep, on my latest playthrough I beat it using a stock Griffith 500 which I bought for 20k Cr from the Used car lot. But the Speed 12 is fairly useless since it may be insanely fast accelerating but its tires just don't have any traction below 110mph, it understeers like crazy (like all TVRs in GT4 for some reason) and has poor tire wear. So its not that gamebreaking all things considered

      @@mrspandel5737 a lot of cars understeer in GT4 for some reason, so it doesn't help, though my memory of the speed 12 was it handling like a beyblade as a kid, even with the wing upgrades

    • @TeaKanji
      @TeaKanji 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The reason for the understeer is because every car has a grip modifier for front and rear, and if the rear is higher than the front, the car will be prone to understeer, especially when exiting corners. Almost all FR's, MR's, and some 4WD's are like this. The TVR's suffer the most from this, the Tuscan Speed 6 for example has 93 front and 103 rear, so it has a massive rear grip bias. Tyre width also plays a role, and if the rear tyres are much wider than the front, it'll also cause understeer. There's a spreadsheet that shows all of these values for every car, obtained from the game's interal SpecDB tables.
      The Speed 12 has quite a few problems: a 60 : 40 weight distribution, meaning the car is front-heavy and there isn't much weight on top of the rear wheels, causing traction issues, plus 95 / 102 grip modifiers, 30 / 40 max downforce and 285 / 315 tyre width which all exemplify its understeer. Even a 200kg rear ballast and gears as long as the game will allow are barely enough to make the car drivable in 1st gear with soft sports tyres with its massive torque at low and mid-RPM's. As well, its custom suspension kit has really stiff spring rates by default, meaning you can't loosen it to allow it to turn more freely.

    I remember being far younger and finding that the RSC and CLK LM were both farmable for a LOT of credits. I didn't have internet access at the time so I had to find them on my own, and that added a lot of enjoyment when you complete an event and find a _really_ cool (and fast!) car is your reward. Truly the greatest progression skip is getting the bonus 100k (and B and A licenses off the start) on a new save if you had GT3 on your memory card, buying the Mercedes 190e, doing the one make race in Mercedes to get the 190 Touring car, then B-Spec'ing the touring car European event to win the Mercedes CLK GTR, which could be sold for 743,749 credits, or used.
    If you didn't have a gt3 save file, then of course you could do the Costa D'Amalfi route, then do the above. All of this done with your first hour or 2 of gameplay. Gt4 was definitely wild with the progression skips, and this was a great video covering them all, so cheers for that!

If you can manage to gold every rally license (I still have nightmares about Delta Integrale in Tahiti in PAL version) you'll get the Subaru Impreza Rally Car Prototype. Honestly GT4 giving you some strong cars easily but having the "final" race locked behind the other main events is the best system. It does not feel good to put a ton of time/cash into a car for a competition only to get something completely garbage as a result, so GT3's prize cars as well as GT5's and GT6's complete lack of them makes the races feel pointless. The GT5/6 level/star systems are even worse, because what makes GT4 so much fun is the free choice you have in progression and taking that away on top of giving you crap in return really was a terrible choice.
    GT3 is really hard to go back to since it can feel like a slog where you are spending massive amounts of time and are still stuck driving 200 hp shitboxes, GT5 is a slog because you have to spend hours driving 200 hp shitboxes while raging because the one time a vehicle you NEED for progression shows up in the Used Car Lot is when you are too low of a level to buy it (Like those damn trucks), GT6 is just ass.

    I honestly think GT4 is 100x better than 3 in terms of pacing. Even if you break the game early, you can't just beeline to the gt championship since you have a fair few events you have to do first. Also I played the Japanese version last year, I hadn't played the game in like 8 years and the big difference I noticed was there was no chaparral. I think in terms of balance it's actually a good thing since even kid me could win lots of races with it because it was just that busted. But now since I'm 10x better at driving I like the game to be a little harder. The Japanese version is actually a bit better to me because some of the cars it doesn't have made it more challenging. Of course if other players may want to have a more comfortable time then by all means go get that RSC and wreck the chumps!
    Also the Corvette festival is called that in Japanese. Idk why only the US version changed it but it is kind of a cool name. The JP version has mostly the same names for non-championship events. I guess it's not like other video games where there are any interesting translation differences since it's mostly just car talk.

There are cool cars that they want to show you and give you in the game, but it's still open enough for you to find your own way. For example, despite all the great cars in the video you mentioned, I won the GT WC with the Suzuki Escudo PP on my first playthrough, but I remember winning some of the ones mentioned. The easiest way i found to beat it, buy a camero ss from chevy classics, do weight reduction , a customizable transmission upgrade, suspension and tires.
    Each race gives you 150,000 for winning and there's 4 races. No license required, b spec can be done in a day. And winning the whole championship gives you 300,000 on top of the 600,000 if you win every race.
    That's 900,000 that can be easily gotten with just doing the one special condition event and selling the Toyota rally raid car.
    I've made it almost a priority race in my GT4 playthroughs. You can get so many cars way early and greatly reduce the difficulty of basically any event. Even doing a no Japanese car challenge, it makes it a cakewalk

    I figured out I could enter a modded Toyota RSC on slicks in the All Japan GT championship because I couldn’t afford anything else. Winning it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in a game to this day, but it is possible. With I knew about the RX8, lol

    A bit of a detail, but El Capitan and Easy Capri are bit of complementary exploits. The latter gives you money to outpace the begginer's league, unlocking the endurance races where you can do the former and crush most events in pursuit of the GT World Championship.
    Now that you mentioned all those One Make Races and the cars they give, perhaps El Capitan is the true game breaking event, as it's the only one that gives an end game car

    I used to grind liga A and La festa instead of the special events, because these feel like racing, and granted good sell value cars, one time I had enough of using the cizetta and the R8 for them, so I started to lightly upgrade low powered cars (suspension, transmission, brakes and racing chips only), or, if the car is too slow, I wouldn't tune it above 210 bhp, made the grinding quite enjoyable, specially beating those new cars with old relics like the gullwing and the 2002.

    Comment made before even starting the video, let's see if you mention this:
    Started a playthrough a couple of weeks ago, decided to do the 1000 Miles championship in a slightly tuned Ginetta G4 (That you win very early on in the game). Long, but in B-Spec at 3x is very manageable. After doing that championship I'm at less than 5% of the game completed with 900.000 credits in the bank.

    I was able to break my GT3 progression. At the start of my playthrough, I was strapped for credits so I decided to do the Roadster Endurance to earn some much needed credits and I ended up being awarded the F688/s

    When I played gt4 I initially didn't search up the prize cars so every car is a nice surprise
    If I searched it up I might be able to map out a very op progression path but will miss out on the sense of excitement from getting a clk race car out of nowhere

    There is a fun story I have about the crossfire. My dad had some friends working for chrysler back then. And they were Road testing the crossfire months before the launch. Where you think they drove with a futuristic looking(for the time) concept drop top sports car? They drove to the middle of the Las Vegas's most busy street. And everyone was looking and photographing the cars. Why would you drive a concept sports car to the middle of Las Vegas?
    Edit was for the typing mistakes. I'm typing on my mobile right now
