Just watched both yours and ColourShed's reviews. Absolutely wild how both of you say how much of a struggle it was to write your reviews for this game specifically
I love how 1978 is yellow, vibrant, and pretty, but 2006 is more blue, dark, and gritty. While 2006 may not be as dark as the game portrays, you have to consider that TK was in prison for 28, and the world looks so different when he finally gets out, so we're probably seeing it through his eyes.
Yeah i love the different feels of the eras, 1978 is obviously the best - that's where this game really shines. 2006 is cool with the new cars but it's so blue that it washes out the colours and makes everything look depressing and bland - it makes me want to go back to 1978. I think someone also mentioned to me before that the difference in colour could be due to the sunglasses that TK is wearing, in 1978 the sunglasses tint is yellow and in 2006 he has new sunglasses with blue tint so in that case yes we would be looking at the world through his eyes
13:30 Does he know? One of the most fun things about this game is rapidly spinning around with the handbrake and shooting the enemies behind you. I wonder if it was an intentional mechanic.
Good point, but there were a couple of situations where you're chasing an enemy while another is behind you at the same time, and you're basically a sitting duck in that moment.
I was going to comment this! That was a very fun thing in this game flipping your car around, shooting the people chasing you, then flipping back around. When I pulled it off, I felt like a badass.
Parallel Lines had a wonderfully unique method of storytelling. I still think that a GTA game with a story set in two different eras would be insanely interesting.
I agree, a storyline where character switching also switches time would be really interesting. It could tell two stories in different time periods simultaneously that influence each other. Like experiencing the 'origin story' and the current day activities of a criminal organization.
I used to love this game. The story, the music, the side activities (garage & races) and especially the ability to play in 70s & 00s. An underrated game from a "forgotten" franchise. We need it back - a remake of the 3 would be great.
This was definitely one of my favorite Driver games! I loved the two eras of the 70s and the modern 2006 time settings. Plus, they really did take it back to its roots. While its not perfect, but I absolutely enjoyed it!
@UnjustifiedRecsyep, it's an absolute shame how large swaths of the driver fanbase today consider this and Driv3r to be the roots of the franchise when it was the damage these games did to the franchise that was exciting to see get undone by San Francisco.
One of my favourite games on the PS2, played it a ton during my college years lol. Cruising around, listening to the soundtrack... overall a very stylish game. Also found the vehicle customisation to be pretty great at the time.
I loved this game when it came out. I remember being blown away by the shift from the 70’s to the 2000’s. The music is excellent as well. I have tried to play it again recently and I didn’t enjoy it so maybe it was just a product of its time.
Thank you for a in-depth look at my favorite game in the iconic seties! It looks & plays the best on the original Xbox, a fantastic & unique open world gem.
Its worth mentioning that there is a GoG version of the game for PC that allows it to play on modern pc's and fixes etc. At the time I liked parallel lines a lot. I can agree that everything is spaced so far away and there isn't much to do with your money. The story is kinda bland but the time gap was really interesting and as you said. Not something we might ever see again. I look forward to seeing the San Francisco review.

I loved this game as a kid and it's a proud member of my collection to this day, and I can say ive played through this game more then a few times over the years
It is an interesting game, I really like the time skip, and even part of the story, the problem is that after Driv3r, they tried to make Parallel Lines as bland and generic as possible after getting too ambitious with Driv3r. The driving really improved and they manage to balanced the game to be 70% driving and 30% shooting on foot as I remember reading in a magazine from that era.
Played the Wii version of this before GTA4 came out and I wasn’t blown away.. but also wasn’t mad that I bought it. Granted, GTA4 and the 360 blew it out of the water and I quickly forgot I bought it..
Yes but to make matters worse, the control scheme of the Wii version is atrocious. The game tries to use every single button of the remote and doesnt make a good job of putting the essential commands on easy to reach buttons and it doesnt have classic controller or remapping support. After a while playing my wrists got hurt...
@@lordeilluminati ABSOLUTELY. The only controls that kinda worked properly were the firing/aiming out of the car. I think I was coping until I could afford an Xbox.
Hey colorshed thank you for reviewing this game man I remember renting this game after a game I rented which was The Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift game that had a different game in the case. However the next day I went back to the store I rented it from and I returned and I immediately grabbed Driver: Parallel Lines and got it for two weeks for free since the game I rented before didn’t have the actual game so I got off very lucky. Anyways keep it up with the reviews and I ❤️ watching all of them. Huge ❤️ from America.
Parallel Lines is one of my favorite games from the PS2 era, especially because it came at a time when I had already spent countless hours in GTA San Andreas and was looking to continue playing something similar (an open world, sandbox, etc. ), Driv3r had not been very attractive to me but as soon as I saw the mechanics of Parallel Lines I was immediately hooked At the time it looked better graphically than GTA San Andreas, since the Skybox that the game used gave it a very different and unique lighting, the particle effects, the modeling of the vehicles, everything is done with a fairly decent level of detail, the physics of the cars was something that I really liked because they were very fun to drive, especially if you got the racing cars (the parts you mention that are tedious due to the distance become easier and more fun with said cars), and speaking of racing, completing the circuits is also a lot of fun with the racing cars since they have the Nitro option, here the option to customize cars was a pretty good one since it offered a lot of variety and almost all cars could be customized, even heavy vehicles. The mechanics, story, missions and weapons of this game are just a lot of fun, I'm afraid to contradict you but I think we both saw a very different game, I never found anything "tedious" in it
Speaking of performances, why not playing the PC version? Driver is all about car chases, and in that category the series is unrivalled. Unfortunately, they tried to get closer to GTA because the market was obsessed by this type of game. I think that in 2023 it will be possible to release a car chase game without being compared to GTA. Looking for the Driver San Francisco review! #ReDriver
When I was younger I adored this game as I did the whole Driver franchise up to that point. I will say I loved the time hop, there were enough difference between the periods that it felt like a different map and even a sequel built into the game.
I absolutely love this game. I often wonder how it would've been if it was a proper next gen console game instead of staying on PS2. Thankfully it has progressive scan.
I feel like Ubisoft wouldn’t have been willing to cough up thw money to make it a banger next gen release. It would have gone down in history as worse than just a mediocre game. The game looks really good visually for a PS2 title. And it’s handling isn’t that bad when you keep in mind a lot of 3rd person PS2 shooters handle janky. But releasing 7th gen means it would be rated way harsher.
Oh man, I spent so many hours as a kid on my ps2 playing this. For me it has the best ambient sound out of any game, it does reflect NYC soooo good! Oh, and the music!
gta vi is supposed to be a bonny and clyde type of story, but some say that the original story was about a different time lines where you work for the colombian cartel and the story started in the 70's or 80's and then jumped to our current time, and the first thing I though was Driver Parallel Lines, and I wonder how R* would've handled that premise but with the polish and interesting writing they are known for
I played this for the first time two years ago and while I don't consider it a masterpiece, I still think it was a worthwhile game. Sure, there were better open-world games out in 2006 (GTA: Vice City Stories, Bully, Saints Row), but for what it was and what it did, it was still a good game. And it was surely a better game than Driv3r. Everything from the story to the atmosphere and even the driving. Still got to play its prequel though, Driver '76.
Hello, Brother! Just want to let you know, I think I've watched most of your videos now after discovering your channel I think from the last month or two. It's been a complete joy to spend whether my free time or in between breaks at the office just watching every review you've had especially the games I played back in my days as a student. your channel is truly a gem.
When GTAIV came out, our PC couldnt run it, so we played this game instead as a budget GTAIV. Havent played this in probably 15 years, but I might give it a go out of sheer nostalgia
In general, the non-ideological part turned out for the most part. It would be much better if the forces invested in this game would be directed to refining and bringing Driv3r to a new level of quality, something like a quick modified remaster, it's a pity that this is not practiced in the gaming industry.
I don't mind Parallel Lines. I found it to be a fun game...until Driver: San Francisco was released, and I ended up finishing the story in 2 4 hour game sessions the day of, and day after release. The story just had me gripped
This is one of the games that marked my childhood, as a fan of driver serie i was blown away by this game specially after the disappointment of Driver 3, everything in that game was just straight vibes ! The cars, the colors, the sunset, the pedestrian, the music and specially New york! I mean for a ps2 game that was waay ahead of its time, i remember putting it in my top 5 best graphics games back then. I hope one day this classic gem will get a proper remake.
this video just unlocked a hidden memory of 5yo me playing some obscure car game on the family pc that was like GTA but had 70s vibes and after so many years of wondering if that was even a real memory, i've finally found what game it was!
I really liked the game back then, but I doubt it can have the same impact today, because the rendered cutscenes really looked amazing to me back then and today they look good, but nothing to write home about today. But the game probably suffered from being the sequel to Driver 3 a lot, because they probably just wanted to play it save in the gameplay department, just making sure evrything worked and didn't really try to make it stand out, other than the presentation, which of course doesn't wow you as much 15 years later. Probably a game that could really benefit from a proper remake.
i didnt play Driver 76 and the Wii version of San Francisco... also that... boat... racing... game. but i did play the java version of san francisco lol a forgotten IP. a shame
I always thought having the game set in two different eras was the coolest thing. The changes in music, atmosphere, and even the theming of the UI between 1978 and 2006 were probably my favorite aspect of this game. I wish GTA could have done that at some point... As lackluster as this game might seem looking back, had I known about it I would have loved it back in 2006.
The GTA IV menu music in the background made me nostalgic falling asleep in my chair to wake up at 6AM the next morning to go to school. Ahh man great times
I remember trying this game at my cousins house and it made me wanna get the game but instead I got gta 4 for the Xbox 360 I wasn't upset but I was surprised at how two different games make a great depiction of new york
Bro, loved your reviews for a long time. Didn't know you were on Twitch. I will definitely be tuning in over there going forward. Hope you're well pal 👍.
man, Driv3r could've been so good, Parallel Lines/San Francisco driving with GTA open world maybe one day also again, it was sick meeting you at TGX homie!
You know, I'd be so happy if they did a remake or even a new driver which inspires to have such a cool storyline, style, music, voiceovers, cutscenes. That's probably not gonna happen.. but what if we did a LOT of noise online? I see lots of people having nostalgia about this game and it has a 9/10 on Steam. I just don't understand how this game was not a big success at the time. Still play it to this day, and have tons of fun. The driving and shooting is casual and satisfying.
7:24 - I went to NYC last year, and so far from all the games I’ve played, including this one, GTA IV was the most accurate portrayal of the city. It was kind of crazy how I always knew where I was based on my knowledge of GTA IVs map 😂 Definitely agree about this game though. I love the Driver series but this one feels out of place in the series and doesn’t focus enough on the big strength the series has which is the driving.
Speaking as someone who's originally from NYC, GTA IV is to this day 100% the most accurate depiction of the city ever made. Rockstar absolutely nailed it, and I hope that they someday decide to return the series there; my dream is to get a Liberty City the size of San Andreas in GTA V (along with some of the surrounding areas, like Long Island, a bit of upstate NY, more of NJ, etc.), as my only complaint with GTA IV's LC is that it feels a tad too small nowadays.
this is my favorite from the series but i must agree is kinda average and they could try make more with it, mainly with the time skip from 70's into 2000's and with characters but to be honest driver never really had deep dive into characters there was just only for the story in every game (except for DSF maybe) but this i don't mind really what mainly bother me is lacking film director this feature was so great additon in previous games and here just isn't present and is shame and it frustrates me so much
My favorite driver game I remember i wanted gta 5 my dad got this for me in 2013 this game was all i had and i loved it as a kid idk if i would now but i love it
This game was one of the most disappointing game purchases of my childhood lol. Really sullied the Driver name for me. Cool concepts, executed with all the grace and care of a dev in 2023. It put me off trying Driver SF until a couple years ago, Driver SF, I highly recommend.
Love the review! Another childhood favourite done and dusted. I never actually owned the game, I rented it from Blockbuster a few times before completing it. Huge fan of the series, even if they are terrible🤣
(Before I’ve seen the video) This game was awesome. I absolutely loved it, it was so much fun, and maybe because I was really young, I absolutely didn’t see the big twist in the game coming.

Was Driver 76 that unpopular ?, no honorable mention despite being a prequel to Parallel line where we play as Ray, and It's a very good Psp exclusive with a cooler story than Parallel line if i may say, great review nonetheless.
Even though in a game I remember in the game 2006, it looks similar I'm a surprise that dear when Xbox 360 was currently out and PS3 launched and they don't have a copy of the game for that platform. It would look even better in HD
It seems for the PC version they realized the drives were too long, as you now have the option to teleport directly to mission markers, completely skipping the drive. The thing that annoys me with the combat is how headshots no longer have any effect and TK is inaccurate with anything thtat isn't the Magnum Revolver/Desert Eagle, Driv3r's movement may have been janky but you could at least aim for the head to take foes down quickly if you were accurate. (As well as honestly having more interesting shootouts which sometimes took advantage of the physics engine to an extent with light destruction.)
As a kid I remember playing it on the PS2, but did not finish it cause i scratched the disc too much at some point, making half of it unplayable sadly. However, very recently I found out there is a PC version for it and began playing it. There are definetly notable differences: - Game is less handholdy on PS2, except for the shooting segment if I recall correctly - AI on PC is a tad dumber but somehow even more agressive - Shooting on PC is missing a very useful feature from the PS2 - target switching. Basically, using the D-pad while autolocking allowed you to switch targets. It would indicate to which targets you could switch to. It was great. - Like you said, fast travel was added on PC. Not gonna lie, it is useful at times. - There are a few minor differences I noticed with certain icons and pause menu. Ones that absolutely stick out are the starting pistol and assault rifle icons for the 70s era. On PC the starting pistol icon has a longer barrel rather than the short one on PS2 and the assault rifle model is straight up replaced. Instead of the M16 on PS2, it's an AK on the PC. Additionally, the SMG on PC is a normal Uzi, while on PS2 it's a Micro Uzi (there is a difference). There are probably other differences but I will have to check. Why they changed those is beyond me honestly. As a side note, TK can shoot accurately with the starting pistols in both eras (and like you said revolver/deagle). To do it you just have to not spam fire it. You can do it pretty fast but not too much and TK will hit every single shot. But yeah he can't aim with rest of his arsenal no matter what.
Hey. I'm not one of your patrons but I'm watching a twitch streamer play a game called Lifeline. Its pretty unique and might be up your alley to review. If its already not on your list.
I (completeley unironically) *love* this game, always did. Jank was hardly uncommon at the time and though the shady corpo BS they pulled was "shocking" at the time, its pretty fkn minor b todays standard! I must've spent over 100hrs editing chase movies to my music collection in D3 lol
Good video, very interesting I played driver and driver 2 when they came out on PlayStation and enjoyed them but i didn't like how they added getting out of the car. I think driver should have stayed with the original play style and kept the player confined to the car. I never played any or the other driver games so i can't comment on how good they are but i know the first game is awesome and i just don't see the need for getting out of the car. Just wanted to share my opinion on the series. Maybe I'll try driver 3 and so on. I appreciate the video
Couldn't agree more. I played all Driver games (and all GTA). I was so hyped as a kid for "Parallel Lines" because I really liked the idea of two time periods. But the game itself was just so boring. There was almost nothing you could do besides the Story missions, and I didn't like the driving physics at all. I loved the first three Driver games, even the buggy Driv3r, but "Parallel Lines" was just a letdown. I normally replay all of my games several times, but "Parallel Lines" was just forgettable.
I loved this game as a kid, but my dad installed a 100% save game so I didn't play the story and just messed around with the cars. That could explain why I liked it so much. I tried to revive some of that nostalgia a few years ago, but I just got so bored after a few hours of playing that I never booted it up again.
Forgettable is pretty apt, I completed parallel lines when it came out and can't really remember anything about it. Driv3r (with its flaws) I still remember missions and elements from the game.

It would've probably been worse tbh... With the PS3/360 Generation it was either HUGE hits or complete flops with the videogames, no in between.
@@Astrothunder_ About the Ubisoft thing, it is said that Watch Dogs 1 was originally a Driver game
Oh man, I spent so many hours as a kid on my ps2 playing this. For me it has the best ambient sound out of any game, it does reflect NYC soooo good! Oh, and the music!
gta vi is supposed to be a bonny and clyde type of story, but some say that the original story was about a different time lines where you work for the colombian cartel and the story started in the 70's or 80's and then jumped to our current time, and the first thing I though was Driver Parallel Lines, and I wonder how R* would've handled that premise but with the polish and interesting writing they are known for
I remember when you could put a game in a stereo and find like 10 tracks was so cool
we want Driver because GTA's we know and played them already
Nice video, driver 76 is a prequel to this game exclusive for psp, they put the whole map in a handheld! and runs very well.
i think its aged pretty well. play it in 4k with reshade and its still rather impressive
If im honest with you. I haven't played Driver Parallel Lines since 2006/07. But I do remember that I wasn't to keen on it though.
Already looking forward to your DSF review, bud !
7:34 - why didn't they just call this game Driver: New York ?
7:37 - *you know what happens to the kid who asks too many questions !?*
When I see a colourshedproductions post I like. If only everything else in life could be so reliable and simple.
yey, something to watch on youtube
i didnt play Driver 76 and the Wii version of San Francisco...
also that... boat... racing... game.
but i did play the java version of san francisco lol
a forgotten IP.
My third favorite driver game behind driver San Francisco.
I remember trying this game at my cousins house and it made me wanna get the game but instead I got gta 4 for the Xbox 360 I wasn't upset but I was surprised at how two different games make a great depiction of new york
Dude i didn't know there was a steel case version of Parallel Lines, i might get one if that's even possible anymore without selling a kidney
Underrated gem. That's for damn sure.
Bro, loved your reviews for a long time. Didn't know you were on Twitch. I will definitely be tuning in over there going forward.
Hope you're well pal 👍.
man, Driv3r could've been so good, Parallel Lines/San Francisco driving with GTA open world maybe one day
also again, it was sick meeting you at TGX homie!
0:32 Man just look at the titles on that magazine cover, talk about nostalgia 😭 I used to read that magazine religiously.
7:24 - I went to NYC last year, and so far from all the games I’ve played, including this one, GTA IV was the most accurate portrayal of the city. It was kind of crazy how I always knew where I was based on my knowledge of GTA IVs map 😂
Definitely agree about this game though.
My cousin bought me that that game for my birthday brand-new absolutely love this it's not perfect but it's a good time
Underrated channel! Another banger brother man
Parallel Lines is definitely what DRIV3R wished it was.
Probably in terms of on foot gameplay atleast lol, Parallel lines on foot gameplay and shooting is just way more refined than whatever driv3r had
i finished this great game i would recommend it
The first Driver game that I actually enjoyed lmao
Ladies and gentlemen;
we're back in sufragette city.
The graphics jump from this game to gta iv just 2 years later is crazy. Seems like they would be at least 5+ years apart
this is my favorite from the series but i must agree is kinda average and they could try make more with it, mainly with the time skip from 70's into 2000's and with characters but to be honest driver never really had deep dive into characters there was just only for the story in every game (except for DSF maybe) but this i don't mind really what mainly bother me is lacking film director this feature was so great additon in previous games and here just isn't present and is shame and it frustrates me so much
My favorite driver game I remember i wanted gta 5 my dad got this for me in 2013 this game was all i had and i loved it as a kid idk if i would now but i love it
This game was one of the most disappointing game purchases of my childhood lol.
Really sullied the Driver name for me.
Cool concepts, executed with all the grace and care of a dev in 2023.
It put me off trying Driver SF until a couple years ago, Driver SF, I highly recommend.
When this came out it was legendary :) . Given the financial & data restrictions this was a great game .
This is the place
Sit down, you're safe now
You've been stuck in a lift
We've been trying to reach you, Thom
This is the place
It won't hurt ever again
The smell of air conditioning
The fish are belly-up
Empty all your pockets
'Cause it's time to come home
This is the place
Remember me
I'm the face you always see
You've been stuck in a lift
In the belly of a whale
At the bottom of the ocean
The smell of air-conditioning
The fish are belly-up
Empty all your pockets
'Cause it's time to come home
The smell of air-conditioning
The fish are belly-up
Let it go
Today is the first day of the rest of your days
So lighten up, squirt
Was Driver 76 that unpopular ?, no honorable mention despite being a prequel to Parallel line where we play as Ray, and It's a very good Psp exclusive with a cooler story than Parallel line if i may say, great review nonetheless.
Even though in a game I remember in the game 2006, it looks similar I'm a surprise that dear when Xbox 360 was currently out and PS3 launched and they don't have a copy of the game for that platform. It would look even better in HD
Love the Destruction Derby Gameplay cut.. ❤
I loved that game. Completed it I don't know how many times.
I used to love the first one and can always remember the tutorial was great times
Men, just want to thank you for this nostalgia!
(As well as honestly having more interesting shootouts which sometimes took advantage of the physics engine to an extent with light destruction.)
i mean he wasn't really properly trained with firearms i guess that can explain why he is so inaccurate
As a kid I remember playing it on the PS2, but did not finish it cause i scratched the disc too much at some point, making half of it unplayable sadly. However, very recently I found out there is a PC version for it and began playing it. There are definetly notable differences:
- Game is less handholdy on PS2, except for the shooting segment if I recall correctly
- AI on PC is a tad dumber but somehow even more agressive
- Shooting on PC is missing a very useful feature from the PS2 - target switching.
If its already not on your list.
best thing about this game is its soundtrack and funky playlist
I (completeley unironically) *love* this game, always did. Jank was hardly uncommon at the time and though the shady corpo BS they pulled was "shocking" at the time, its pretty fkn minor b todays standard!
I must've spent over 100hrs editing chase movies to my music collection in D3 lol
Good video, very interesting
I played driver and driver 2 when they came out on PlayStation and enjoyed them but i didn't like how they added getting out of the car.
7:24 I've bee to New York. My advice: stay out of the slums and subways - they're filthy!
This game was not so bad..yeah it is goofy but i played it a view times and i loved that it changed to another time period.. it is a unique game
This game is a gem
Driver San Francisco is one of my fav games maybe this one will be great too
Couldn't agree more.
YESSS i've been waiting for this, I grew up with this game!
man i remember playing pc version when i was like 11 or something and it was so hard, some missions are straight up nightmare
From south africa bro love your videos
Wooow the shooting from the car is exactly like the Starkey and hutch game
That game was great fun.
My favorite driver game
I loved this game as a kid, but my dad installed a 100% save game so I didn't play the story and just messed around with the cars. That could explain why I liked it so much. I tried to revive some of that nostalgia a few years ago, but I just got so bored after a few hours of playing that I never booted it up again.
Forgettable is pretty apt, I completed parallel lines when it came out and can't really remember anything about it. Driv3r (with its flaws) I still remember missions and elements from the game.
Me when parallel lines is indeed one of the games of all time
Also! What do you use to record PS2!? Thanks in advance❤
