Pete, was that 4 hours once a week or 4 separate 1 hour sessions?

@@jameshall2299 it was 4 hours over 3 days. We had 1.5 hour classes on Monday and Tuesday and then an hour on Wednesday but other classes had different days and sometimes times.

Great job Pete! I lived with a Costa Rican family while going to school every day to learn Spanish. My host family spoke no English which forced me to learn Spanish if I needed to communicate. Immersing yourself is always the fastest way to learn any language, but it’s natural to revert back to your own language. Keep up the good work!

Bro you are already miles ahead of most expats, English is so prevalent that most don't even bother. practice makes perfect. The only tip i know for learning more vocab fast is to label everything in your home with the Thai word, also watch a movie/show you've seen a lot (Star Wars) and watch with Thai dubbing. Great job and its good to see you making videos again!

I was just telling my friend about labeling everything in the house. The flash cards I’ve made really help… they’re in the part 2 video.
And that’s a great call about watching a movie I know really well. Now I just need to pick the movie…

@peteonretreat2023 I could tell you practiced. But practice is a good thing!!! When I was in Bali, what really helped me with my Indo? I would go to the same cafe every morning for breakfast. Just a small local place, the only employee was the woman who owned it. I'd be in there EARLY, before the tourists showed up. And when she saw I was trying to learn Indonesian? She told me, "Tidak Engris, Bahasa Indonesia." She was only going to speak with me in Indonesian, no more English. She still helped me with vocabulary, though. I know it wasn't a formal education. But those mornings taught me all the conversational Indo I needed to walk around town and talk with whoever wanted to chat! I could go weeks without ever really using English. Which is all I really wanted; to be able to connect with people and show them respect. Opened doors to lifelong friendships I otherwise never would've had the opportunity to experience.

Well damn, I'm 64 and keep to myself mostly, I didn't socialize much even in the States. Partly because of hearing loss, but mostly just because I'm a loner. I especially like the area that I'm living in Jomtien currently. I don't feel that I'm missing out not being able to communicate verbally but what I really get a kick out of in Thailand is being able to look pretty much any nationality in the eyes and give them a smile and have it returned. Try doing that at a Walmart back in Wisconsin and see what happens 😂 This was quite an informative video, Pete and all the more power to you for trying to do Thailand correctly 👍

Kudos on your effort to read Thai. It's not the easiest language in the world. Keep up good work. I have a few comments about your video.
Pronoun usage is a bit more complex than just gender-based. The pronoun the speaker chooses can also convey the relationship between two parties as well as emotional level of the speaker. While ผม is an all-purpose formal pronoun for male, it sounds odd when used among close friends or toward your subordinate. And ฉัน is not exclusive to female, male can used it toward someone of equal rank or lower.
Thai does have a way to indicate action in past, future and perfect tenses. For example: ไป (go), ได้ไป (went), จะไป (will go) and เคยไป (have gone)
And you thought vowel before consonant was strange, try words like โคลง (wobble) or เพราะ (because). Here, the vowel is applied not on 1st but 2nd consonant. Pronunciation of 1st consonant is like how it's done for 's' in English words like 'speak' or 'stand'.
More fun with the word โคลง. Try reading these simple sentences. It makes perfect sense if you read them correctly - โคลงเรือ เรือโคลงเพราะโคลง 😄

I was hoping I would get some insightful comments on this series. I knew ฉัน is used by both genders and is often used in songs by make singers. What I’m just realizing is that’s probably why my phone chooses it… because it’s not wrong.
Thank you the fun vocabulary lesson as well. I didn’t think to mention about hidden saras like in ถนน (road).
